Targeting Of Long Chain Triacylglycerol Hydrolase Gene For Tuberculosis Treatment, Pappachan Kolattukudy, Jaiyanth Daniel, Chirajyoti Deb

Tuberculosis, caused by the organism Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is one of the major public health threats in the world. The emergence of multidrug resistant strains poses serious threats to the control of this disease due to the complex nature of second-line drug treatment. Upon infection, the bacterium goes through an initial replication phase after which it enters a nonreplicative, drug-resistant state of dormancy. The bacterium is able to survive in this dormant state for decades until the hosts immune system is weakened when it reactivates and causes the infectious disease.

Cross Cultural, Bilingual Group Experience: Evidence That Process-Focused Groups Work, Louis L. Downs, Tan Joo Siang, Kung Shang Chun Oct 2009

Cross Cultural, Bilingual Group Experience: Evidence That Process-Focused Groups Work, Louis L. Downs, Tan Joo Siang, Kung Shang Chun

Journal for International Counselor Education

A group of counselors, counselor educators and trainees convened a therapeutic group in Kajang, Malaysia, facilitated by a counselor from the United States. Although Malaysian counselors are accustomed to content-driven groups, this group adhered to process-focused protocols. A Delphi analysis on the outcome of the group was performed by a multinational team. Results suggested that the group followed the same stage development as described in the American literature and that the process-focused group appeared to facilitate the crossing of cultural lines more effectively than a content-driven group.

Monitoring Early Season Mosquito And Bird Populations: Implications For West Nile Virus In Lancaster County, Nebraska, Jason Thiele, Trevor Hefley, Lindsay Beck-Johnson, Emily Matthews Oct 2009

Monitoring Early Season Mosquito And Bird Populations: Implications For West Nile Virus In Lancaster County, Nebraska, Jason Thiele, Trevor Hefley, Lindsay Beck-Johnson, Emily Matthews

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance efforts in Nebraska focus on the late summer and early fall months. We studied mosquito and bird populations in Lancaster County, Nebraska to evaluate the potential for WNV transmission in the late spring and early summer, prior to occurrences of human WNV infections. Culex tarsalis is the most important vector of WNV in Nebraska and was the focal species for the study. Mosquitoes were trapped at six locations representing three habitat types from May 14 to July 11, 2007. The C. tarsalis population, as estimated by the number of individuals caught in the traps each …

BECOMING THE DOCTOR I WANT TO BE: EVALUATING THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNS. Merritt Evans, Eric Holmboe, Jeffrey Wong, Julie Rosenbaum. Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that the current medical training environment may include experiences that compromise trainees professional development. Little work has been done to explore this evolution during internship. METHODS: Interns in the Yale University Internal Medicine Residency Programs were asked to evaluate their professional development during internship through a qualitative study involving two open-ended written surveys and a focus group interview. Nutrient Removal & Greenhouse Gas Abatement With Co2 Supplemented Algal High Rate Ponds, Ian Woertz, Laura Fulton, Tryg Lundquist Oct 2009

Nutrient Removal & Greenhouse Gas Abatement With Co2 Supplemented Algal High Rate Ponds, Ian Woertz, Laura Fulton, Tryg Lundquist

Civil and Environmental Engineering

High rate algae ponds fed clarified domestic wastewater and CO2-rich flue gas are expected to remove nutrients to concentrations similar to those achieved in mechanical treatment technologies, such as activated sludge. However, the energy intensity of wastewater treatment with CO2-supplemented high rate ponds (HRPs) would be less than that of mechanical treatments. In conjunction with anaerobic digestion of algal biomass and co-substrates, the algae-based system would produce a substantial excess of electricity. Greenhouse gas abatement from such CO2-HRP/digestion systems would stem mainly from energy conservation and the offset of fossil fuel electricity with biogas-derived …
