Pathways To Care: Duration Of Untreated Psychosis From Karachi, Pakistan., Haider A. Naqvi, Sajjad Hussain, Muhammad Zaman, Mohammad Islam
Department of Psychiatry
Background: Substantial amount of time is lost before initiation of treatment in Schizophrenia. The delay in treatment is labelled as Duration of Untreated Psychosis (DUP). Most of these estimates come from western countries, where health systems are relatively better developed. There is dearth of information on pathway to care from developing countries. Methods And Results: Patients with ICD-10 based diagnosis of Schizophrenia were enrolled by convenient method of sampling. The pathway to care was explored through a semi-structured questionnaire. Onset, course and symptoms of psychosis were assessed using Interview for the Retrospective Assessment of the Onset of Schizophrenia (IRAOS). Ethical …

Development Of A Mechanical Cavopulmonary Assist Device For The Failing Fontan Patients, Jugal Kapadia
Development Of A Mechanical Cavopulmonary Assist Device For The Failing Fontan Patients, Jugal Kapadia
Theses and Dissertations
The long term objective of this research is to develop a collapsible, percutaneously inserted, axial flow blood pump to improve blood flow in the cavopulmonary circulation. Through this research, the experimental evaluation of five blood pump prototypes and hemolysis testing of one blood pump prototype were performed. All prototypes demonstrated acceptable hydraulic performance. A comparison of the experimental results with numerical predictions demonstrated a 10-20% deviation, an acceptable range per industry standard. Hemolysis testing of a four bladed adult blood pump showed plasma free hemoglobin level of 20.04 mg/dL and maximum NIH (normalized index of hemolysis) level was 0.017 g/100L. …

Barriers To Interpreter Use In The Medical Clinical Encounter, Luz Evelyn Jimenez
Barriers To Interpreter Use In The Medical Clinical Encounter, Luz Evelyn Jimenez
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The Limited English Proficiency (LEP) population in the United States requires interpreters in order to receive appropriate medical care. However, interpreters are not used consistently in clinical encounters. This study aims to identify the barriers that interfere with providing this service, as well as to propose some possible ways of overcoming these barriers. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using Medline, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycINFO. Twenty articles that presented barriers to interpreter use were identified. These barriers referred to either professional interpreters or ad hoc interpreters, or were general barriers. …

Because of its chronicity and lack of cure, the experience of endometriosis goes well beyond physical symptoms and has a significant impact on the psychosocial aspects of affected patients lives. Post Partum Anxiety And Depression In Peri-Urban Communities Of Karachi, Pakistan: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Niloufer Sultan Ali, Badar S. Ali, Iqbal Azam Syed
Department of Family Medicine
Background: Postpartum anxiety and depression is a major public health concern because of its adverse effects on the cognitive and social development of the infant. Globally postpartum depression has been widely investigated but as anxiety is a more prominent feature of postpartum depression we assessed the prevalence of anxiety and depression and their associated factors in post partum women.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study investigating the impact of postpartum anxiety and depression on child growth and development was conducted in two peri-urban, multiethnic, communities of Karachi, a mega city of Pakistan. A house to house questionnaire based survey was done by …
