Molecular Intervention In Mouse Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis And Alzheimer’S Disease – Neuropathology And Behavior, Steven Prescott Bennett Oct 2009

Molecular Intervention In Mouse Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis And Alzheimer’S Disease – Neuropathology And Behavior, Steven Prescott Bennett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Neurodegeneration describes the progressive loss of structure and function of neurons, leading ultimately to cell and organism death. Although the initiating factors of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis may be different, they share common pathophysiologies. Proteinopathies, as these diseases are now termed, are characterized by atypical deposits of proteins, often due to misfolding. Associated with these deposits are dysfunctional mitochondria, oxidative stress, disrupted axonal transport, inflammation, and apoptotic cell death. If this occurs in motor neurons, as in ALS, ataxia precedes death with little or no change in cognition. On the other hand, if …

The Brain In Its Body: Motor Control And Sensing In A Biomechanical Context, Hillel J. Chiel Oct 2009

The Brain In Its Body: Motor Control And Sensing In A Biomechanical Context, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

Although it is widely recognized that adaptive behavior emerges from the ongoing interactions among the nervous system, the body, and the environment, it has only become possible in recent years to experimentally study and to simulate these interacting systems. We briefly review work on molluscan feeding, maintenance of postural control in cats and humans, simulations of locomotion in lamprey, insect, cat and salamander, and active vibrissal sensing in rats to illustrate the insights that can be derived from studies of neural control and sensing within a biomechanical context. These studies illustrate that control may be shared between the nervous system …

Biomarker Changes Associated With Tuberculin Skin Test (Tst) Conversion: A Two-Year Longitudinal Follow-Up Study In Exposed Household Contacts, Rabia Hussain, Najeeha Talat, Firdaus Shahid, Ghaffar Dawood Oct 2009

Biomarker Changes Associated With Tuberculin Skin Test (Tst) Conversion: A Two-Year Longitudinal Follow-Up Study In Exposed Household Contacts, Rabia Hussain, Najeeha Talat, Firdaus Shahid, Ghaffar Dawood

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:A high prevalence (50-80%) of Tuberculin Skin Test Positivity (TST+ >or=10 mm indurations) has been reported in TB endemic countries. This pool forms a huge reservoir for new incident TB cases. However, immune biomarkers associated with TST conversion are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to identify immune biomarkers associated with TST conversion after acute Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)
Methodology/Principal Findings:A 24 month longitudinal study was carried out in a recently MTB exposed cohort of household contacts (HC = 93, 75% TST+). Control group consisted of unexposed community controls (EC = 59, 46%TST+). Cytokine secretion was assessed …

Clean Cities Annual Operating Plan 2009: Florida Space Coast Clean Cities Coalition, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In March, 1997, the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) joined the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Clean Cities program to form the Florida Space Coast Clean Cities Coalition in East Central Florida. Space Coast Coalition now consists of 10 counties, as the State is divided into eight Clean Cities regions. Florida Solar Energy Center is located in Cocoa in the approximate center of the coalition area. On October 1, 1999, the expanded Florida Space Coast Clean Cities Coalition was designated and authorized as the 75th Clean Cities Coalition. The Florida Space Coast Clean Cities Coalition is a 501-3c non-profit corporation …

Neural Network Demodulation For An Optical Sensor, Steve Eugene Watkins, Donald C. Wunsch, Rohit Dua Oct 2009

Neural Network Demodulation For An Optical Sensor, Steve Eugene Watkins, Donald C. Wunsch, Rohit Dua

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Methods and systems of neural network demodulation for an optical sensor. An optical sensor may be coupled to a structure and be capable of reflecting a reflected optical signal. A wavelength of the reflected optical signal may be spread based on a strain being applied to the structure. A replication device may receive the reflected optical signal from the optical sensor and produce a plurality of optical signals. A filter may be coupled to the replication device to receive an optical signal from the plurality of optical signals and filter the received optical signal. A detector may receive the filtered …

Nucleic Acids Encoding An Endometrial Bleeding Associated Factor (Ebaf), Siamak Tabibzadeh, Ravi Kothapalli Oct 2009

Nucleic Acids Encoding An Endometrial Bleeding Associated Factor (Ebaf), Siamak Tabibzadeh, Ravi Kothapalli

USF Patents

A method for the early diagnosing of selected adenocarcinomas in a human comprising the steps of removing a bodily sample from the human, and assaying the bodily sample for elevated expression of a specific gene. The gene being assayed for in the bodily sample is the TGFB-4 gene (hereinafter referred to as the endometrial bleeding associated factor (ebaf) gene. The bodily sample can be tissue from a specific organ in the body, or a blood sample. Increased levels of ebaf in the sample relative to basal levels may be indicative of a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the colon or ovaries, or …

Oct-1 As An Oncoprotein And Use Of Nucleic Acid Inhibitors Of Oct-1 For Cancer Treatment, George Blanck, Kimberly Palubin, Aaron Osborne Oct 2009

Oct-1 As An Oncoprotein And Use Of Nucleic Acid Inhibitors Of Oct-1 For Cancer Treatment, George Blanck, Kimberly Palubin, Aaron Osborne

USF Patents

Oct-1 is shown to be an oncoprotein because of its known role as an activator of the histone H2B gene and the importance of this gene during DNA synthesis. To determine the role of Oct-1 as an oncoprotein, the cell line 5637 (ATCC HTB9) was transfected with the vector pcDNA3 containing full length, antisense Oct-1 cDNA. This cell line is Rb-defective and has been shown to have increased Oct-1 binding activity as compared to Rb reconstituted clones. After transfection, Oct-1 antisense clones were grown and assayed for the loss of oncogenic characteristics as compared to control transformants.

Inhibition Of Rna Recruitment And Replication Of An Rna Virus By Acridine Derivatives With Known Anti-Prion Activities, Zsuzsanna Sasvari, Stéphane Bach, Marc Blondel, Peter D. Nagy Oct 2009

Inhibition Of Rna Recruitment And Replication Of An Rna Virus By Acridine Derivatives With Known Anti-Prion Activities, Zsuzsanna Sasvari, Stéphane Bach, Marc Blondel, Peter D. Nagy

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Small molecule inhibitors of RNA virus replication are potent antiviral drugs and useful to dissect selected steps in the replication process. To identify antiviral compounds against Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV), a model positive stranded RNA virus, we tested acridine derivatives, such as chlorpromazine (CPZ) and quinacrine (QC), which are active against prion-based diseases.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we report that CPZ and QC compounds inhibited TBSV RNA accumulation in plants and in protoplasts. In vitro assays revealed that the inhibitory effects of these compounds were manifested at different steps of TBSV replication. QC was shown to have an effect …
