Geographic Disparity In Access To Healthcare In Nepal, Gyanesh Lama Oct 2009

Geographic Disparity In Access To Healthcare In Nepal, Gyanesh Lama

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Since the 1970s, it has become increasingly clear that geography plays a significant role in determining individuals’ access to needed health services. However, this work has been conducted on population served by private sectors in developed countries. The extent to which geographic disparities exist among the poor in developing countries constrained by economic decline, and the factors that contribute to such disparities are currently unknown. The purpose of this study is to quantify the magnitude and predictors of geographic disparities in health service use among a national sample of women in Nepal.

Roundtable On Institutional Repositories, David Howard, Ray White, David Wells, Rebecca Foley Oct 2009

Roundtable On Institutional Repositories, David Howard, Ray White, David Wells, Rebecca Foley

InfoSci@ECU Seminars

An Institutional Repository (IR) is a set of services and technologies that provide the means to collect, manage, provide access to, disseminate, and preserve digital materials produced at an institution (Shreeves and Cragin, 2008). The take up of IR technologies in universities has been broadly contemporaneous with the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, beginning with the release of the first usable system, DSpace, in 2002. Since 2002, IRs have moved from academia to government, museums and corporations. Today, IRs are increasingly seen as a key component of the ‘networked information economy’ (Benkler, 2006). In many institutions, libraries are assuming program …

What Distinguishes Weight-Loss Maintainers From The Treatment-Seeking Obese? Analysis Of Environmental, Behavioral, And Psychosocial Variables In Diverse Populations, Suzanne Phelan, Tao Liu, Amy Gorin, Michael Lowe, Joseph Hogan, Joseph Fava, Rena R. Wing Oct 2009

What Distinguishes Weight-Loss Maintainers From The Treatment-Seeking Obese? Analysis Of Environmental, Behavioral, And Psychosocial Variables In Diverse Populations, Suzanne Phelan, Tao Liu, Amy Gorin, Michael Lowe, Joseph Hogan, Joseph Fava, Rena R. Wing

Kinesiology and Public Health

Background Understanding the factors that influence successful weight control is critical for developing interventions.
Purpose The purpose of the study was to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of psychosocial, environmental, and behavioral variables in distinguishing weight-loss maintainers (WLM) from treatment-seeking obese (TSO).
Methods WLM (n=167) had lost ≥10% of their maximum body weight, had kept the weight off for ≥5 years, and were now of normal weight. TSO-1 and TSO-2 had a history of dieting and body mass index ≥25. TSO-1 was predominantly Caucasian; TSO-2 was predominantly African-American. Bayesian model averaging was used to identify the …

Sugar Ethanol In Florida: Economic, Agricultural, And Environmental Aspects, Joshua F. Berger Oct 2009

Sugar Ethanol In Florida: Economic, Agricultural, And Environmental Aspects, Joshua F. Berger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ethanol production has been widely perceived as a solution to the global energy crisis, with the added benefit of reinvigorating declining agricultural economies. Moves towards dedicating crop production to ethanol however have raised a number of concerns related to its economic and environmental consequences. Missing from this debate is a consideration of the ways in which sugar can be used as a feedstock for ethanol, an issue that is especially pertinent within the state of Florida. The national commitment and scale of corn ethanol production in the U.S. has largely meant a lack of focus on other feedstocks which could …

The Effects Of Field-Of-View And Patient Size On Ct Numbers From Cone-Beam Computed Tomography., Katrina Y T Seet, Arvand Barghi, Slav Yartsev, Jacob Van Dyk Oct 2009

The Effects Of Field-Of-View And Patient Size On Ct Numbers From Cone-Beam Computed Tomography., Katrina Y T Seet, Arvand Barghi, Slav Yartsev, Jacob Van Dyk

Oncology Publications

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is used for patient alignment before treatment and is ideal for use in adaptive radiotherapy to account for tumor shrinkage, organ deformation and weight loss. However, CBCT images are prone to artifacts such as streaking and cupping effects, reducing image quality and CT number accuracy. Our goal was to determine the optimum combination of cone-beam imaging options to increase the accuracy of image CT numbers. Several phantoms with and without inserts of known relative electron densities were imaged using the Varian on-board imaging system. It was found that CT numbers are most influenced by the selection …
