Mercury Exposure, Nutritional Deficiencies And Metabolic Disruptions May Affect Learning In Children, Renee Dufault, Roseanne Schnoll, Walter J. Lukiw, Blaise Leblanc, Charles Cornett, Lyn Patrick, David Wallinga, Steven G. Gilbert, Raquel Crider

Publications and Research

Among dietary factors, learning and behavior are influenced not only by nutrients, but also by exposure to toxic food contaminants such as mercury that can disrupt metabolic processes and alter neuronal plasticity. Neurons lacking in plasticity are a factor in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and mental retardation. Essential nutrients help maintain normal neuronal plasticity. Nutritional deficiencies, including deficiencies in the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the amino acid methionine, and the trace minerals zinc and selenium, have been shown to influence neuronal function and produce defects in neuronal plasticity, as well as impact behavior …

Pigs challenged with hypoglycosylated variants of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) major surface protein GP5 exhibited increased production of PRRSV-neutralizing antibodies relative to the levels of neutralizing antibodies produced by pigs immunized with wild type (wt) or glycosylated GP5. This invention provides for methods of obtaining improved immune responses in pigs to PRRSV, compositions useful for obtaining the improved immune responses as well as isolated polynucleotides that encode hypoglycosylated variants of PRRSV major surface protein GP5.

Magnetic And Nonmagnetic Nanoparticles From A Group Of Uniform Materials Based On Organic Salts, Aaron Tesfai, Bilal El-Zahab, Algernon T. Kelley, Min Li, Jayne C. Garno, Gary A. Baker, Isiah M. Warner

The size and uniformity of magnetic nanoparticles developed from a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS) were controlled using an in situ ion exchange, water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsion preparation. Most of these nanoGUMBOS are in fact ionic liquids (i.e., melting points less than 100 °C), while others have melting points above the conventional 100 °C demarcation. Simple variations in the reagent concentrations following a w/o approach allowed us to smoothly and predictably vary nanoparticle dimensions across a significant size regime with excellent uniformity. Average sizesofGUMBOS particles ranging from 14 to 198 nm were achieved by manipulation of the …

Cruelty, Prison Conditions, And The Eighth Amendment, Sharon Dolovich Oct 2009

Cruelty, Prison Conditions, And The Eighth Amendment, Sharon Dolovich

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Eighth Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, but its normative force derives chiefly from its use of the word cruel. For this prohibition to be meaningful in a society where incarceration is the primary mode of criminal punishment, it is necessary to determine when prison conditions are cruel. Yet the Supreme Court has thus far avoided this question, instead holding in Farmer v. Brennan that unless some prison official actually knew of and disregarded a substantial risk of serious harm to prisoners, prison conditions are not “punishment” within the meaning of the Eighth Amendment. Farmer’s reasoning, however, does not …

Plant Sex And The Evolution Of Plant Defenses Against Herbivores, Marc T.J. Johnson, Stacey Dewitt Smith, Marc D. Rausher, Douglas J. Futuyma Oct 2009

Plant Sex And The Evolution Of Plant Defenses Against Herbivores, Marc T.J. Johnson, Stacey Dewitt Smith, Marc D. Rausher, Douglas J. Futuyma

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Despite the importance of plant–herbivore interactions to the ecology and evolution of terrestrial ecosystems, the evolutionary factors contributing to variation in plant defenses against herbivores remain unresolved. We used a comparative phylogenetic approach to examine a previously untested hypothesis (Recombination-Mating System Hypothesis) that posits that reduced sexual reproduction limits adaptive evolution of plant defenses against arthropod herbivores. To test this hypothesis we focused on the evening primrose family (Onagraceae), which includes both sexual and functionally asexual species. Ancestral state reconstructions on a 5-gene phylogeny of the family revealed between 18 and 21 independent transitions between sexual and asexual reproduction. Based …

Sarz Promotes The Expression Of Virulence Factors And Represses Biofilm Formation By Modulating Sara And Agr In Staphylococcus Aureus, Sandeep Tamber, Ambrose L. Cheung Oct 2009

Sarz Promotes The Expression Of Virulence Factors And Represses Biofilm Formation By Modulating Sara And Agr In Staphylococcus Aureus, Sandeep Tamber, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Staphylococcus aureus is a remarkably adaptable organism capable of multiple modes of growth in the human host, as a part of the normal flora, as a pathogen, or as a biofilm. Many of the regulatory pathways governing these modes of growth are centered on the activities of two regulatory molecules, the DNA binding protein SarA and the regulatory RNAIII effector molecule of the agr system. Here, we describe the modulation of these regulators and their downstream target genes by SarZ, a member of the SarA/MarR family of transcriptional regulators. Transcriptional and phenotypic analyses of a sarZ mutant demonstrated that the …

Problem-Oriented Approaches In The Context Of Health Care Education: Perspectives And Lessons, Weiqun Courtney Kang, Elizabeth Jordan, Marion Porath Oct 2009

Problem-Oriented Approaches In The Context Of Health Care Education: Perspectives And Lessons, Weiqun Courtney Kang, Elizabeth Jordan, Marion Porath

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The current study aimed to explore and articulate some of the key issues in problem-oriented learning (POL), in the context of health care education. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with faculties representing four different health care disciplines around common issues identified in a prior survey study. Thematic analysis of the interview data revealed that POL practice among health care educators includes both problem-based learning (PBL) in the strict sense, and a much broader integration of PBL components into discipline-specific curricula. In both cases, expertise was recognized as an important requirement for an effective tutor, although the range of necessary expertise was …

Gender And Ovarian Hormone Effects On The Relative Contribution Of Chromaticity To Brightness, Brian Keith Foutch Oct 2009

Gender And Ovarian Hormone Effects On The Relative Contribution Of Chromaticity To Brightness, Brian Keith Foutch

Dissertations

PURPOSE: The chromatic contribution to brightness perception was compared in males and females. METHODS: Direct brightness matching (DBM) and heterochromatic flicker photometry (HFP) were used to measure relative luminous efficiency, and DBM/HFP ratios were predicted to be higher for females than males on repeated measures and for each "primary" color. No gender differences were predicted in DBM or HFP measures. Within-females effects of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (PG) levels, contraceptive use, and menstrual cycle phase were also investigated. It was expected that E2 would directly predict DBM/HFP ratios and that PG would antagonize that relationship. Based on that prediction, DBM/HFP …
