Breaking From Tradition: India And The Path To Development, Angel M. Newsom Oct 2009

Breaking From Tradition: India And The Path To Development, Angel M. Newsom

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

"How could a country with more than 300 million illiterate people also have the kind of scientific human resources that bring some of the world's largest corporations to base their R&D labs in India?" (Tripathi, 2007, p.68). This question acknowledges the coexistence of two vastly different worlds within one country. On one hand, India is making significant progress on the path to becoming a developed country;one that can provide the basic fundamentals of living for its citizens while sustaining progressive economic growth; on the other hand, it must overcome challenges to this goal that relate to a crumbling infrastructure, poverty, …

Acute Free Perforation Of Gall Bladder Encountered At Initial Presentation In A 51 Years Old Man: A Case Report, Abdul Rehman Alvi, Saad Ajmal, Taimur Saleem

Section of General Surgery

Introduction: Gallbladder perforation is a rare but life threatening event. We describe a case of gallbladder perforation encountered at initial presentation.
Case Presentation: A 51 years old male, without any known medical co-morbidity, presented with a 1-day history of sudden-onset abdominal pain and abdominal distension. On examination, his abdomen was distended with generalized tenderness on palpation. Abdominal x-ray showed no signs of intestinal obstruction or pneumoperitoneum. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed appearance suggestive of gallbladder perforation. The Patient was taken to the operating room and a diagnostic laparoscopy was performed revealing yellowish green fluid in the peritoneum. Difficulty …

Demographic Trends In The Manchester-Nashua Metropolitan Area, Kenneth M. Johnson, Robert Macieski

Carsey Publications

In the city of Manchester, New Hampshire, 25 percent of children live below the poverty line, a high rate that is in stark contrast to the state's rate of just 10 percent, one of the nation's lowest. That is the most surprising finding from this new analysis of demographic trends in the Manchester-Nashua metropolitan area. The brief presents recent demographic shifts in Manchester, Nashua, and suburban Hillsborough County alongside historical perspectives of the region.

Ethnic Disparities In Cervical Cancer Survival Among Texas Women, Ann L. Coker, Christopher P. Desimone, Katherine S. Eggleston, Arica L. White, Melanie Williams

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Objective: The aim of this work was to determine whether minority women are more likely to die of cervical cancer. A population-based cohort study was performed using Texas Cancer Registry (TCR) data from 1998 to 2002.

Methods: A total of 5,166 women with cervical cancer were identified during 1998–2002 through the TCR. Measures of socioeconomic status (SES) and urbanization were created using census block group-level data. Multilevel logistic regression was used to calculate the odds of dying from cervical cancer by race, and Cox proportional hazards modeling was used for cervical cancer-specific survival analysis.

Results: After adjusting for age, SES, …

Shaping The Dream: A Survey Of Post-World War Ii St. Petersburg, 1946-1963, Jon L. Wilson

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

St. Petersburg stood on the cusp of great change in 1946. Returning veterans sought jobs and housing, and St. Petersburg experienced its first major growth era since the real estate boom of the 1920s. The decade of the 1950s saw the city‘s population leap from 96,738 to 181,298, an 87 percent increase driven by boosters and national publicity about the city‘s leisurely ambience. Tract houses replaced remaining pockets of pasture and pine trees as subdivisions sprawled toward the city limits and beyond. On fertile truck-farming acreage called Goose Pond, developers built Central Plaza, a shopping center positioned to drain business …

Environmental And Organizational Factors Influencing Similarities And Differences Between Nonprofit Human Service Providers That Are Faith-Based And Those With No Religious Affiliation, Geraldine Lewis Meeks

Theses and Dissertations

The American social welfare system is a mixed system consisting of loosely coupled government programs, private nonprofit and for-profit organizations, grassroots and religious entities. Although religious entities historically played a key role in the development of the social welfare system, the faith-based initiative of President George W. Bush targeted religious service providers to receive government funding and take on a larger role in service delivery to at-risk populations based on the belief that these providers were substantially different from traditional providers. Using a cross-sectional research design and a survey instrument created for the study, data was collected from 121 nonprofit …

A Survey Of The Semantic Specification Of Sensors, Michael Compton, Cory Andrew Henson, Laurent Lefort, Holger Neuhaus, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Semantic sensor networks use declarative descriptions of sensors promote reuse and integration, and to help solve the difficulties of installing, querying and maintaining complex, heterogeneous sensor networks. This paper reviews the state of the art for the semantic specification of sensors, one of the fundamental technologies in the semantic sensor network vision. Twelve sensor ontologies are reviewed and analysed for the range and expressive power of their concepts. The reasoning and search technology developed in conjunction with these ontologies is also reviewed, as is technology for annotating OGC standards with links to ontologies. Sensor concepts that cannot be expressed accurately …
