Advanced Education & Research Training Initiative [Aerti] 2009, Mark Daniel Geil, John W. Michael

Faculty Articles

The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists has long recognized the valuable synergy between research and education, and the mutual importance of each in advancing the field. Consequently, a focal point of an Academy grant initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education has been a systematic analysis of research capacity and advanced education. A grant project in 2004 convened a series of meetings and produced the Advanced Education and Research Training Initiative (AERTI) report.

Continuing the initiative, a multidisciplinary and multinational group of experts convened in Chicago July 17-19, 2009 to review the 2004 AERTI Report, evaluate its recommendations …

Examining The Effect Of Pore Size Distribution And Shape On Flow Through Unsaturated Peat Using Computer Tomography, Fereidoun Rezanezhad, William L. Quinton, Jonathan S. Price, David Elrick, T.R. Elliot, Richard J. Heck

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

The hydraulic conductivity of unsaturated peat soil is controlled by the air-filled porosity, pore size and geometric distribution as well as other physical properties of peat materials. This study investigates how the size and shape of pores affects the flow of water through peat soils. In this study we used X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), at 45μm resolution under 5 specific soil-water pressure head levels to provide 3-D, high-resolution images that were used to detect the inner pore structure of peat samples under a changing water regime. Pore structure and configuration were found to be irregular, which affected the rate of …

Pornography As A Leisure Behavior: An Investigation Of Pornography Use And Leisure Boredom, Casey B. Schenk Oct 2009

Pornography As A Leisure Behavior: An Investigation Of Pornography Use And Leisure Boredom, Casey B. Schenk

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate pornography use in the context of leisure boredom. The sample consisted of N = 290 married couples (N = 580 individuals) from a large Northwestern city in the United States. When controlling for demographic variables, leisure boredom accounted for 2.2% of the variance within pornography use. Results suggest leisure boredom as a significant predictor of pornography use in married adults. A quadratic effect was also found, suggesting this relationship to be curvilinear. Findings are discussed around the use of leisure theory in pornography scholarship, in this case leisure boredom. Practical applications …

Defining And Measuring Poverty In Nebraska, Randolph L. Cantrell Oct 2009

Defining And Measuring Poverty In Nebraska, Randolph L. Cantrell

Cornhusker Economics

Data recently released by the Census Bureau estimate that 47.4 million Americans, or about one-insix, are living in poverty. This latest estimate has drawn criticism from some observers who see it as an attempt to artificially inflate the magnitude of poverty in America. The criticism results from a change in methodology that included not just income (the Whitehouse Office of Management and Budget (OMB) poverty threshold for 2009 is $22,050 a year for a family of four), but also made adjustments, taking into account such things as region, out-of-pocket medical expenses and child care costs, that in total add about …

When And How (If At All) Does Law Constrain Official Actions?, Frederick F. Schauer Oct 2009

When And How (If At All) Does Law Constrain Official Actions?, Frederick F. Schauer

Sibley Lecture Series

University of Virginia Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law Frederick Schauer delivered the University of Georgia School of Law's 105th Sibley Lecture. Schauer's lecture titled "When and How (If at All) Does Law Constrain Official Action?" took place Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom. According to Schauer, although Americans claim to live in a country whose decisions are highly influenced by law and courts, the reality may be quite different. "Across the political spectrum officials and public figures are politically and reputationally rewarded for doing the right thing even if it violates the law and punished …
