A Social Ecological Framework For Addressing Social Issues, Alexis Jaclyn Hickman, Lyndsey Christoffersen, Mo Sami, Chitvan Trivedi
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)
The School of Social Ecology at University of California, Irvine (UCI), teaches students to conduct research that is socially valid. This implies a problem-posing approach to global issues such as human trafficking. Applying a social ecological lens to such a multi-dimensional issue, allows us to systematically address the effective context of the problem. This framework assists in better targeting policies and programs that are not only aimed at the victims of trafficking, but also address the enabling environment (political, social, built) and demand side of trafficking. A social ecological framework for addressing social issues such as human trafficking was developed …

Searching For Genes That Matter In Acute Kidney Injury: A Systematic Review, Jonathan Lu
Searching For Genes That Matter In Acute Kidney Injury: A Systematic Review, Jonathan Lu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Identifying patients who may develop acute kidney injury (AKI) remains challenging as clinical determinants explain only a portion of individual risk. Another factor that likely affects risk is intrinsic genetic variability. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of studies that related the development or prognosis of AKI to genetic variation. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, HuGEnet, SCOPUS and Web of Science for articles from 1950 to Dec 2007. Two independent researchers screened articles using predetermined criteria. Studies were assessed for methodological quality via an aggregate scoring system. The 16 included studies were of cohort or case-cohort design, and investigated 35 polymorphisms …

Social responsibility which a corporation should be aware of is increasing as it plays a more important role in society. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was taken by some huge entrepreneurs in the past. Conversely, CSR is prized one of important business activities for every corporate nowadays. Cause-related marketing draws particularly special attention among various CSRs, because it has a direct and positive effect on purchasing behavior.
Marketing activity of Amway Korea is an excellent example of the cause-related marketing in Korea. Mid 2000s, some multilevel marketing firms had evaded the law, customer had negative attitude towards Amway Korea. Amway Korea, …

Mcl-1 Degradation During Hepatocyte Lipoapoptosis., Howard C. Masuoka, Justin L. Mott, Steven F. Bronk, Nathan W. Werneburg, Yuko Akazawa, Scott H. Kaufmann, Gregory J. Gores
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
The mechanisms of free fatty acid-induced lipoapoptosis are incompletely understood. Here we demonstrate that Mcl-1, an anti-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family, was rapidly degraded in hepatocytes in response to palmitate and stearate by a proteasome-dependent pathway. Overexpression of a ubiquitin-resistant Mcl-1 mutant in Huh-7 cells attenuated palmitate-mediated Mcl-1 loss and lipoapoptosis; conversely, short hairpin RNA-targeted knockdown of Mcl-1 sensitized these cells to lipoapoptosis. Palmitate-induced Mcl-1 degradation was attenuated by the novel protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor rottlerin. Of the two human novel PKC isozymes, PKCdelta and PKC, only activation of PKC was observed by phospho-immunoblot analysis. As compared with …
Accurate Molecular Classification Of Cancer Using Simple Rules., Xiaosheng Wang, Osamu Gotoh
Accurate Molecular Classification Of Cancer Using Simple Rules., Xiaosheng Wang, Osamu Gotoh
Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy
BACKGROUND: One intractable problem with using microarray data analysis for cancer classification is how to reduce the extremely high-dimensionality gene feature data to remove the effects of noise. Feature selection is often used to address this problem by selecting informative genes from among thousands or tens of thousands of genes. However, most of the existing methods of microarray-based cancer classification utilize too many genes to achieve accurate classification, which often hampers the interpretability of the models. For a better understanding of the classification results, it is desirable to develop simpler rule-based models with as few marker genes as possible.

A Study On The Mot Of Household Telecommunication Services, Minhee Son, Kyesook Han, Hyoyeol Lim
Asia Marketing Journal
With the intensity of competition and the standardization of technical attributes in telecommunications service market increasing, differentiated activity and customer experience in service encounter is regarded as an important means for creating customer value, however, there is a dearth of good literature examining what MOT activity is composed of according to consumption chain, and how service quality of MOT has influenced customer performance. Especially there exist various services across different phase of Product life cycle(PLC) in household telecommunication service market, customer requirement for MOT might depend on whether its phase is introduction-growth stage or maturity-decline stage, the empirical study is …

Scope And Mechanistic Investigations On The Solvent-Controlled Regio- And Stereoselective Formation Of Enol Esters From The Ruthenium-Catalyzed Coupling Reaction Of Terminal Alkynes And Carboxylic Acids, Chae S. Yi, Ruili Gao
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The ruthenium-hydride complex (PCy3)2(CO)RuHCl was found to be a highly effective catalyst for the alkyne-to-carboxylic acid coupling reaction to give synthetically useful enol ester products. A strong solvent effect was observed for the ruthenium catalyst in modulating the activity and selectivity; the coupling reaction in CH2Cl2 led to the regioselective formation of gem-enol ester products, while the stereoselective formation of (Z)-enol esters was obtained in THF. The coupling reaction was found to be strongly inhibited by PCy3. The coupling reaction of both PhCO2H/PhC≡CD and PhCO2 …

Fireproofing The Lawn: Reclaimed Water And Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers In Tampa Bay, Ryan C. Davis
Fireproofing The Lawn: Reclaimed Water And Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers In Tampa Bay, Ryan C. Davis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Reclaimed water has increased in popularity as a means to recycle water and thus decrease the amount of wasteful water use. This process is widely used in Tampa Bay for watering of lawns. This increase in popularity and use has raised questions as to what contaminants are in the reclaimed water.
The purpose of this study was to analyze reclaimed water for contaminants believed to be detrimental to health and conduct interviews to ascertain perceptions of risk in the local population. As water reuse grows in popularity further research will need to be conducted to address potential human health concerns. …
Animal Welfare--Animal Rights: Role Of Grazing, Roy Burris
Animal Welfare--Animal Rights: Role Of Grazing, Roy Burris
Kentucky Grazing Conference
The care and handling of farm animals has drawn a lot of media attention lately. Some well-publicized events have given our industry the proverbial black-eye and led to a chain of events that has left livestock producers feeling very vulnerable to negative attacks. Although these events have been very isolated, they have had some very farreaching effects. Could they have been prevented? How? What do we do now?

Why Should I Improve My Grazing Program?, Garry D. Lacefield
Kentucky Grazing Conference
Grazing represents the cheapest way to feed ruminants on a cost per pound of nutrient basis. Stored feed is usually the single largest item in livestock budgets and cost or amount of stored feed is usually the best prediction of potential profitability in most beef cattle operations.

Carbon Kuznets Curves: Long-Run Structural Dynamics And Policy Events, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi
Carbon Kuznets Curves: Long-Run Structural Dynamics And Policy Events, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We study the structural differences among climate change leading ‘factors’ - Northern EU members -, and lagging actors - southern EU countries and the ‘Umbrella group’ - with regard to long run carbon-income relationships. Homogeneous and heterogeneous panel models show that the groups of countries less in favour of stringent climate policy have yet to experience a Kuznets curve, though they show relative delinking. Northern EU instead robustly shows bell shapes. Exogenous policy events such as the 1992 climate change convention appear to be relevant in shaping the EKC of Northern EU. In addition, other events such as the second …

Sme, Exports, Argentina, Gianmarco Ottaviano, Christian Volpe Martincus
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
There exists a growing body of literature which looks at export decisions made by firms. Most studies focus on developed countries and do not explore whether different behavioral patterns prevail over the firm size distribution. This paper aims at filling this gap in the literature by analyzing the export behavior of a statistically representative sample of 192 Small and Medium-Size Enterprises (SMEs) in a developing country, Argentina, over the period 1996-1998. We find that the level of employment, sourcing from abroad, investment in product improvement and average productivity are associated with a higher probability of exporting. Training activities for employees …
