A Model For Sustainable Humanitarian Engineering Projects, Evan A. Thomas, Bernard Amadei, Robyn Sandekian

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The engineering profession should embrace a new mission statement?to contribute to the building of a more sustainable, stable, and equitable world. Recently, engineering students and professionals in the United States have shown strong interest in directly addressing the needs of developing communities worldwide. That interest has taken the form of short-and medium-term international trips through Engineers Without Borders?USA and similar organizations. There are also several instances where this kind of outreach work has been integrated into engineering education at various US institutions such as the University of Colorado at Boulder. This paper addresses the challenges and opportunities associated with balancing …

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

The Enrollment Forecasts in this report were prepared in Spring and Summer 2009, based on historic enrollment data from Fall 2008 and previous years. However, the entire report was not ready for publication until after preliminary Fall 2009 enrollment data became available. This preface briefly addresses the district-wide trends observed in Fall 2009 and evaluates the forecasts in the short term. The next report will include more analysis of enrollment trends with respect to area demographics and trends within subareas such as high school clusters. All 2009-10 enrollment figures are preliminary figures as of October 1, tabulated by the District …

Management Accounting And Control: Lessons For And From The World's Tiniest Businesses, Srikant M. Datar, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Jane Yuthas

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Microbusiness owners often lack the knowledge and skills--the human capital--necessary to make effective use of financial capital. They lack even the basic knowledge about how a loan is obtained and repaid and how debt can be used for business development. Most microfinance institutions have developed training that teaches clients about the timing and amount of repayment, the need for financial discipline to meet the repayment schedule, and the importance of investing the loan in working capital or productive assets rather than using it for household consumption. Although this training is essential for successful loan management from the institution's perspective, it often …

Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Novel Fatty Acid Derivatives And Other Natural Antimicrobials, Patricia Nobmann Nov 2009

Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Novel Fatty Acid Derivatives And Other Natural Antimicrobials, Patricia Nobmann

Doctoral

The food industry has shown increased interest for novel natural antimicrobials due to consumer demand for foods with fewer synthetic additives, increased safety, quality and shelf-life. Concurrently, the emergence of drug resistant bacteria substantiates the need for newer antimicrobial agents. Alternative strategies include the use of novel antimicrobials, such as fatty acid derivatives, essential oils and bacteriocins, with proven antimicrobial properties against a diverse range of bacteria. This study investigated novel carbohydrate fatty acid (CF A) derivatives for their antibacterial activity against a range of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. A series of mono-substituted CF A derivatives using lauric and caprylic …

Activity-Aware Ecg-Based Patient Authentication For Remote Health Monitoring, Janani Sriram, Minho Shin, Tanzeem Choudhury, David Kotz Nov 2009

Activity-Aware Ecg-Based Patient Authentication For Remote Health Monitoring, Janani Sriram, Minho Shin, Tanzeem Choudhury, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mobile medical sensors promise to provide an efficient, accurate, and economic way to monitor patients' health outside the hospital. Patient authentication is a necessary security requirement in remote health monitoring scenarios. The monitoring system needs to make sure that the data is coming from the right person before any medical or financial decisions are made based on the data. Credential-based authentication methods (e.g., passwords, certificates) are not well-suited for remote healthcare as patients could hand over credentials to someone else. Furthermore, one-time authentication using credentials or trait-based biometrics (e.g., face, fingerprints, iris) do not cover the entire monitoring period and …

Levels Of The Secreted Vibrio Cholerae Attachment Factor Gbpa Are Modulated By Quorum-Sensing-Induced Proteolysis, Brooke A. Jude, Raquel M. Martinez, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Nov 2009

Levels Of The Secreted Vibrio Cholerae Attachment Factor Gbpa Are Modulated By Quorum-Sensing-Induced Proteolysis, Brooke A. Jude, Raquel M. Martinez, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Vibrio cholerae is the etiologic agent of cholera in humans. Intestinal colonization occurs in a stepwise fashion, initiating with attachment to the small intestinal epithelium. This attachment is followed by expression of the toxin-coregulated pilus, microcolony formation, and cholera toxin (CT) production. We have recently characterized a secreted attachment factor, GlcNAc binding protein A (GbpA), which functions in attachment to environmental chitin sources as well as to intestinal substrates. Studies have been initiated to define the regulatory network involved in GbpA induction. At low cell density, GbpA was detected in the culture supernatant of all wild-type (WT) strains examined. In …

Comparison Of Estrogen Receptors, Progesterone Receptors And Her-2/Neu Expression Between Primary And Metastatic Breast Carcinoma, Muhammad Azam, Asim Qureshi, Samina Mansoor

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether receptor status and HER-2/neu status remains same in primary and metastatic breast carcinoma to corresponding lymph nodes of individual patients.

METHODS: Estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER-2/neu immunohistochemical stains were performed on primary and metastatic breast carcinoma to axillary lymph nodes in 100 patients. Data was collected on a Performa and age, tumour size, type, grade and expression of ER, PR and HER-2/neu on primary and metastatic tumours were recorded.

RESULTS: Hormone receptor status was compared between primary and metastatic tumours. Estrogen receptor positivity was observed in 28% primary tumours which were reduced to 25% in …

State Of The U.S. Ocean And Coastal Economies 2009, Judith T. Kildow, Charles S. Colgan, Jason D. Scorse

Publications

This nation’s coasts and oceans contribute much to the United States economy. For the past ten years, the National Ocean Economics Program (NOEP) has compiled time-series data that track economic activities, demographics, natural resource production, non-market values, and federal expenditures in the U.S. coastal zone both on land and in the water. On the website www.oceaneconomics.org, the public—government officials, academics, industry, and advocacy groups—have had interactive access to this information and used it widely for many different purposes. This report features highlights from this collection to heighten appreciation for the value of the ocean and this nation’s coasts among an even …

Financial Crisis, Imf, And Bank Efficiency: Empirical Evidence From The Asean-4 Banking Sectors, Fadzlan Sufian, Muzafar Shah Habibullah

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Despite its severity and deep influence on both the real and financial sectors, empirical evidence on the evolution of the performance of the ASEAN-4 banking sectors since the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis is relatively scarce. By employing the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach the present study examines for the first time the impact of the Asian financial crisis on the efficiency of the ASEAN-4 countries banking sectors. This study focuses on two major approaches vis. intermediation and revenue approaches. The empirical findings suggest that the estimates of technical efficiency are consistently higher under the revenue approach. We find that banks …
