Letter By Jeilan Et Al Regarding Article, "Longitudinal Strain Delay Index By Speckle Tracking Imaging: A New Marker Of Response To Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy"., Jeilan Mohamed, Jiun H. Tuan, G. Andre' Ng Jan 2009

Letter By Jeilan Et Al Regarding Article, "Longitudinal Strain Delay Index By Speckle Tracking Imaging: A New Marker Of Response To Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy"., Jeilan Mohamed, Jiun H. Tuan, G. Andre' Ng

Internal Medicine, East Africa

We read with interest the recent article by Lim et al.1 This article demonstrated a strong correlation between a novel longitudinal strain delay index and left ventricular end-systolic volume reduction in both ischemic and nonischemic patients.

The principle outlined by the authors is that an increased longitudinal strain delay index requires both dyssynchrony (defined in their article as a discrepancy between the time of end-systolic contraction and the time to peak strain) and residual contractility. Their concept elegantly considers the problem of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) nonresponse in heart failure patients who have myocardial segments with delayed contraction due …

Natural Medicine: Personal Responsibility And Self-Empowerment, Kimber Lopez Jan 2009

Natural Medicine: Personal Responsibility And Self-Empowerment, Kimber Lopez

Pomona Senior Theses

Although most “alternative” medical practices have existed far longer than conventional healthcare, modern allopathic continues to be the dominant system of medicine used in the United States. Herbal medicine is one of the oldest healing practices known to humankind and continues to be practiced today despite the numerous challenges modern society poses. As Julie Stone and Joan Mathews illuminate in Complimentary Medicine and the Law, “Plant-based remedies have been the principal source of medicines in healing traditions around the world and, as the World health Organization is at pains to remind us, 80 percent of the world’s population still depends …

Documenting Gender, Dean Spade Jan 2009

Documenting Gender, Dean Spade

Faculty Articles

This article analyzes gender reclassification policies, which determine when an administrative agency will record a change to an individual's gender marker. It’s analysis takes place in three policy contexts: placement in gender-segregated facilities, changing gender marker on IDs, state provision of healthcare that prohibit gender discrimination on the record for those seeking care. It looks at the significant variation in these policies across agencies to demonstrate the instability of gender as a category of identity verification. The article also asks whether the assumed usefulness of gender for identity tracking in the variety of state programs reviewed is well-founded, and it …

Local Employment, Poverty, And Property Value Effects Of Geographically-Targeted Tax Incentives: An Instrumental Variables Approach, Andrew R. Hanson Jan 2009

Local Employment, Poverty, And Property Value Effects Of Geographically-Targeted Tax Incentives: An Instrumental Variables Approach, Andrew R. Hanson

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The federal Empowerment Zone (EZ) program is a set of tax incentives targeted to areas of select cities. I estimate the effect of the EZ program on employment, poverty, and property values by comparing areas that received an EZ to areas that applied (and qualified), but were rejected. Because of endogeneity concerns, I use political representation to instrument for EZ designation. OLS results show a positive and statistically significant effect of the program on employment and poverty. IV estimates suggest the program had no effect on employment and poverty, and instead had a large statistically significant effect on property values.

The Anatomy Of A Production: The Analysis Of The Directorial Journey Mounting "Steel Magnolias" For The Stage, Aradhana Tiwar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is based on the Vine Theater Company's production of "Steel Magnolias" performed in March of 2007 at the Garden Theater in Winter Park Florida, directed by Aradhana Tiwari. This document examines the directorial journey from vision to the stage. Specifically it will explore a.) The dynamics of the production process from a directorial lens. b.) Interpreting Harling's text for design and performance c.) The development of an artistic aesthetic through collaboration. In May of 2007, I mounted a production of "Steel Magnolias" for the Orlando International Fringe Festival. The show was performed in the Universal, a thrust space …

Like A Woman: Playing The Homosexual As Truth In Kiss Of The Spider Womana, Michael Beaman Jan 2009

Like A Woman: Playing The Homosexual As Truth In Kiss Of The Spider Womana, Michael Beaman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Identity, who we are, is at the core of every human being, thus at the core of every character from every play. How the character identifies his self through gender and sexual identity will shape both physical and emotional choices that an actor will make through the rehearsal process. As an actor, it is absolutely imperative to resist the urge to pass judgment on the characters we portray. As more characters in modern drama are openly gay, there is an increasing urge for an actor to fall into campy stereotypes. Through a performance of the role of Molina in Manuel …

Machinal: A Sourcebook For The Actress Playing "Young Women", Brittney Rentschler Jan 2009

Machinal: A Sourcebook For The Actress Playing "Young Women", Brittney Rentschler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will document four phases of my rehearsal process/performance while portraying the role of Helen in Sophie Treadwell's Machinal. The first phase of the project will be researching and analyzing historical material on: Sophie Treadwell (the playwright) Ruth Snyder (the murderess upon whom the character of Helen is based), and the actual murder that occurred in the 1920's. The second phase that will be documented is a character analysis. I will take each episode and divide it into the following sections: given circumstances, what is said about the character by the playwright, by others, or by herself, objectives, tactics, …

X: The Rise And Fall Of An Asylum Star (A Journey Of Two Actresses), Erika Wilhite Jan 2009

X: The Rise And Fall Of An Asylum Star (A Journey Of Two Actresses), Erika Wilhite

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The performance of X: The Rise and Fall of an Asylum Star, in conjunction with my thesis document, investigates the dichotomy of fantasy and reality for a performer. I compare the creative and emotional journey of Augustine, a young woman hospitalized for hysteria, to my own journey as an actress. Augustine was also performer, for her doctors led her in public demonstrations of the symptoms of hysteria. Her "talent" for hysteria earned her notoriety and celebrity. She was coached and directed from her doctors to enhance her demonstrations. As a result, the validity and authenticity of her state was questionable. …

Beyond Blonde: Creating A Non-Stereotypical Audrey In Ken Ludwig's Leading Ladies, Christine Young Jan 2009

Beyond Blonde: Creating A Non-Stereotypical Audrey In Ken Ludwig's Leading Ladies, Christine Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

American society possesses strong, if not basic, stereotypes for each hair color: the "dumb" blonde, the "intelligent" or "serious" brunette, and the "spitfire" redhead. In contemporary entertainment culture, blonde women have achieved unique status beyond the stereotypes accorded to their brunette and redheaded counterparts. Revered and reviled simultaneously, these women cannot be ignored or dismissed. The convention of the "dumb blonde" is at the heart of this issue. When scrutinized, it is possible to discern at least four distinctions of this stereotype: the perceived as truly dumb, or innocent, blonde (Johanna in Sweeney Todd); the bombshell blonde (Lorelei Lee in …

Cultivating Strong Citizens Through Public Education: Greek And Roman Methodology As A Pedagogical Approach In Public Education, Krystina Sarff Jan 2009

Cultivating Strong Citizens Through Public Education: Greek And Roman Methodology As A Pedagogical Approach In Public Education, Krystina Sarff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ancient Greeks were a group of people who valued intelligence and athleticism above all other human traits; because of their focus, their society became one of the most revered and advanced civilizations in all of history. They were able to significantly influence the Roman Empire's philosophers, rhetoric, and education system. In order for the United States wants to match the Greeks' paramount feats, citizens have to become more learned and fit. The future intellectual development of the United States is at risk of halting progress as a nation if action is not taken. Quintilian's educational philosophies stimulate students' brainpower, …
