Electric Stimulation For The Bladder Dysfunction In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Chao-Min Wang, Yen-Ho Wang
Electric Stimulation For The Bladder Dysfunction In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Chao-Min Wang, Yen-Ho Wang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Bladder dysfunction makes huge impact on the patients with spinal cord injury. It not only causes inconvenience in daily living, but also leads to many complications, including life-threatening renal failure. Traditional methods had been brought into greater use for the management of bladder dysfunction, such as indwelling catheter, clean intermittent catheterization, external condom catheter, bladder augmentation and so on. Electric stimulation is an effective treatment for both bladder voiding and storage dysfunction and it can be used in many different location. The electrodes can be placed on spinal cord, nerve root, peripheral nerve, bladder and skin by surgical implantation, needle …

Quantitative Analysis Of Bladder Compliance In Healthy Subjects, Su-Ju Tsai, Tsung-Ho Ying, Yu-Lin Kao, Yu-Hui Huang, Chun-Yao Yu, Liu-Ing Bih
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Bladder compliance expresses the relationship between bladder volume and detrusor pressure and is generally regarded as a measure of bladder stiffness or distensibility. Based on the varied selection criteria during the urodynamic study, differences in bladder compliance often exist. The objective of this study was to provide reference ranges for ”normal” variability in bladder compliance among healthy subjects.A total of twenty-four healthy subjects, twelve men and twelve women with mean age of 25.2 years and estimated maximal capacity (EMC) of 393 ml, were enrolled in this study. During the standardized procedures of urodynamic study, pairs of data on bladder volume …

Occurrence Of Segmental Zoster Paresis In The Right Arm Of An Adult With Multiple Sclerosis: A Casereport, Shih-Han Lin, Wen-Shiang Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Segmental zoster paresis is a rare complication of cutaneous herpes zoster. Clinical diagnosis of segmental zoster paresis depends upon a history of painful vesicular eruptions in a dermatomal distribution, followed by muscle weakness in the related myotomes. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman with opticospinal type multiple sclerosis with recent cutaneous herpes zoster and right shoulder girdle weakness. Differential diagnosis included multiple sclerosis relapse, zoster myelitis, segmental zoster shoulder paresis, cervical radiculopathy, and shoulder joint or soft-tissue disorders. MRI with gadolinium enhancement of the spinal cord 1 week after the onset of symptoms showed neither new multiple sclerosis …

Acute Renal Failure After Ingestion Of Polyethylene Glycol Electrolyte Lavage Solution For Bowel Preparation In A Chronic Spinal Cord Injury Patient: A Casereport, Ping-Hsin Ko, Ya-Ling Huang, Yen-Ho Wang, Huey-Wen Liang, Shin-Liang Pan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Intravenous pyelography (IVP) is a common tool for evaluating the upper urinary tract in spinal cord injury patients. To obtain a proper image, bowel preparation is required. Among the regimens for bowel preparation, polyethylene glycol (PEG) electrolyte lavage solution has a good cleansing quality and fewer side effects. Nonetheless, adverse effects of the regimen, though rare, have been reported. We describe a spinal cord injury patient who suffered from acute renal failure as a result of PEG-related toxicity, after taking oral PEG electrolyte lavage solution for bowel preparation. A 57-year-old woman who had sustained spinal cord injury for 11 years …

The Hemineglect And Hemianopia In Right Hemispheric Stroke Patients, Yung-Nan Hsu, Liu-Ing Bih, Chang-Zern Hong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This study investigated whether a stroke patient with left hemianopsia, which was confirmed by the perimetric test, may also have hemineglect. The relationship between hemineglect and hemianopia in patients with right hemispheric stroke was evaluated. Eleven subjects with left unilateral neglect underwent three testing sessions separated in time. The three test sessions, including cancellation and static perimetric tests, were performed at approximately 3 months, 4 months, and 7 months post the onset of the stroke. For the cancellation test, patients were asked to circle 60 marks on the test paper, and the number of marks correctly circled was scored. For …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The main causes of cervical spine injury vary among different age groups. Elderly people have a tendency to sustain injuries due to falls, which is a low energy mechanism of injury. Here, we report a case of a 76-year-old woman who fell down from sitting and suffered severe dislocation of the C5 on the C6 vertebra and locking of the bilateral facet joints. She showed spontaneous reduction of the dislocation on a magnetic resonance image taken 3 h after the injury. After surgical fixation of the dislocated cervical spine, she was transferred for rehabilitation therapy. Gradually neurological and functional improvement …

Background: Previously we have shown that B cell receptor (BCR) expression and B cell receptor signaling pathways are important for the basal growth of B lymphoma cells. In particular we have shown that the activation of Syk, a non-src family protein tyrosine kinase and the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK), ERK and JNK that mediate BCR signals are required for the constitutive growth of B lymphoma cells. Since src family protein tyrosine kinases (SFKs) like Lyn are known to be needed for the phosphorylation of BCR co-receptors, Ig-alpha and Ig-beta, we hypothesized that one or more SFKs will be constitutively …

The Kyoto Protocol In A Global Perspective, Andreja Cirman, Polona Domadenik, Matjaž Koman, Tjaša Redek
Economic and Business Review
The global climate has changed notably since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gasses (GHG) have increased dramatically followed by an increase in global average temperature. In order to avoid negative potential outcomes of global warming, countries have adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that has so far been ratified by 192 countries. In 1997 the Kyoto Protocol, a binding GHG reduction plan, was adopted and entered into force in 2005. But several countries, including the USA, have had doubts about the potential negative consequences of the planned 5% global joint reduction of …

Climate Protection And Ocean Acidification : The Case For Immediate Action In International Law & Policy Negotiations, Carolyne Okeijn
World Maritime University Dissertations
This dissertation discusses ocean acidification as an emerging priority in international climate protection processes within the UNFCCC and the IMO. It provides discussion in an area where there is currently a gap between ocean acidification science and corresponding action in law and policy processes. It builds the case for substantial, immediate action on CO2 within the context of negotiations at UNFCCC for the post-Kyoto climate regime. This dissertation contains an examination of the available science publications on ocean acidification and submissions made by leading ocean acidification experts at COP-15; references to “ocean acidification” in the IMO MEPC meeting protocols and …
Ship Recycling In The International Regulatory Regime Of The Marine Environment : Selected Legal And Practical Issues And Implications, Ying Fang

Managing A Creative Practice, Julie C. Barrett
Managing A Creative Practice, Julie C. Barrett
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Myths and assumptions about creativity often lead us to believe that creativity is innate. Researchers find though, that we develop creative skills like any other ability, through opportunity, encouragement and practice. They also believe that most people fail to reach their creative potential, not because of lack of ability, but lack of opportunity. In this paper, I studied how creativity functions (specifically in terms of my own painting practice) and how it can be applied more flexibly. Certain factors, such as access to strong mentors, freedom to experiment, and readily available resources, help potentially exceptional minds find the passion to …

The focus of my Synthesis Project is the development of a Curriculum Guide that outlines the importance of building relationships with young people that are meaningful, supported, structured and collaborative. In developing this guide, I felt it was essential to create a framework that will support my work within youth development, for young people ages 9-19, in order to scaffold learning and foster opportunities for resilient thought. In addition to supporting these learning opportunities, I also felt it was important to develop a foundation from which the staff that I supervise and work with, understand the importance of their role …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A 21-year-old man had progressive weakness and numbness of bilateral lower extremities and sphincter dysfunction after a traffic accident. The image and electrodiagnostic study showed no significant abnormal findings. Conversion paraplegia was suspected due to unusual clinical presentation, which cannot be explained by neuropathologic lesions. After intensive rehabilitation, patient's functional performance improved significantly and he could walk independently without device. But later, a fibrous dysplasia lesion was found at left sphenoid greater wing. He received an operation to remove it. The relationship between his benign brain tumor and conversion disorder is unknown, but the tumor that compressed temporal lobe might …

A December To Remember, Richard C. Crepeau
A December To Remember, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It has been a December to remember. As the month comes to a close with a remarkable flurry of headline sports stories, its clear that this one month was not only one for the memory bank, but that it may have been the most fitting way to end a year that has certified the decade as the Naughty Naughties. What seemed like an awkward tag at the beginning of the new century has become a most appropriate signature phrase as this decade comes to its ignominious close.

The Wilson Disease: A Casereport, Nai-Chiung Huang, Ta-Sen Wei, Yen-Chung Chen, Wei-Chen Liang, Peng-Ta Liu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Wilson disease is a rare autosomal recessive inherited disorder of copper metabolism. The genetic defect, localized to chromosome arm 13q, has been shown to affect the copper-transporting adenosine triphosphatase gene. The major pathology is excessive deposition of copper in the liver, brain, and other tissues. The most common presenting neurological features are tremor, dystonia and ataxia that influence the motor control and gait. The diagnosis is confirmed by measurement of serum ceruloplasmin, urinary copper excretion and hepatic copper content as well as the detection of Kayser-Fleischer rings. The subject in our case study is a 25-year-old, female patient with Wilson disease. …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background: Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is one of the common soft-tissue tumors that occur in the retroperitoneal cavity. It often invades adjacent structures and causes symptoms of gastrointestinal or urinary tract infection. However, it rarely causes sciatica by compressing the lumbosarcral nerve roots. A recent reviewarticle of the domestic literatures revealed that this is the first casereport on sciatica caused by retroperitoneal liposarcoma.Case: We present the case of a 29-year-old man who complained of left knee pain for half a year. The pain gradually progressed to his left lateral calf. Sciatica was suspected based on his clinical symptoms and electrodiagnostic studies. However, …

Aphasia In A Congenital Deaf Man: A Casereport, Shu-Yi Wang, Jin-Cherng Chen, Huei-Ting Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Congenitally deaf persons don't have the ability to communicate verbally due to profound hearing impairment. Thus, they rely on words and sign language to communicate with others. Physicians tend to pay less attention to people who can't communicate verbally. We report the case of a 45-year-old congenitally deaf man who developed a left frontotemporal brain tumor. He was right-handed. As a result of the tumor, he lost both the ability to form words and the sign language he had relied upon to communicate with others. He recovered some ability to communicate 6 months after surgery. He was able to use …
