Transient Osteoporosis Of The Hip During Pregnancy: A Casereport, Wen-Chuan Pai, Ching-Yang Lin, Mu-Jung Kao, Fong-Cheng Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Transient osteoporosis, also called ”bone marrow edema syndrome”, is a rare disorder of unknown etiology. It primarily affects women in the third trimester of pregnancy as well as middle-aged, overweight men, and the hip joint is most commonly involved. The main symptom of transient osteoporosis of the hip is a sudden onset of pain at the lateral aspect of the hip. Mild limitation of hip range of motion is often present. A 36-year-old woman presented to our outpatient department 5 weeks after cesarean section with bilateral hip pain, which had begun suddenly during her eighth month of pregnancy. Magnetic resonance …

Reliability And Validity Of The Iliac Crest Leveling And Paper Thickness Correction Method For Measuring Functional Leg-Length Discrepancy, Chun-Yi Lin, Tzu-Jung Wu, His-Hui Sung, Ke-Shin Jian, Chi-Chung Ho

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The objective of this study is to determine the reliability and validity of a clinical measurement for functional leg-length discrepancy (LLD) using the level and paper thickness correction (LPC) method to determine intra-rater and inter-rater reliability and validity. We induced a simulated LLD (5-30 mm) for each subject twice in a block-simulating group (n=17), none of whom had an apparent LLD. The X-ray group (n=7), who had LLD, were measured using radiographs to measure the LLD. The examiner performed the LPC method in both groups by adjusting the bilateral height of the top iliac crest margin via the level and …

The Role Of Women In Family Businesses, Jaka Vadnjal, Blaž Zupan Dec 2009

The Role Of Women In Family Businesses, Jaka Vadnjal, Blaž Zupan

Economic and Business Review

The role of women in family businesses is explored in the paper. Although recognised as generally very important players, the role of women is oft en defined as invisible in business decision-making, supportive in men’s traditional business domains and only rarely adequately recognised and rewarded. The paper explores possible differences in the views of men and women who manage small family firms. Their attitudes opposing the traditional business roles of women, different views on managerial, ownership and transition issues and possible gender discrimination are examined. The findings support the paradigm of a different, more feminine style of management, while signs …

Achieving A Response From Fast-Growing Companies: The Case Of Slovenian Gazelles, Mojca Bavdaž, Mateja Drnovšek, Aleša Lotrič Dolinar Dec 2009

Achieving A Response From Fast-Growing Companies: The Case Of Slovenian Gazelles, Mojca Bavdaž, Mateja Drnovšek, Aleša Lotrič Dolinar

Economic and Business Review

Non-mandatory business surveys generally suffer from low response rates and potential non-response bias. Achieving a response is most problematic in small- and medium-sized enterprises because of their scarce human resources. The problem becomes exacerbated in fast-growing companies – ‘gazelles’. The paper addresses the effectiveness of data collection efforts to achieve a response among the top Slovenian gazelles in 2008. We analyse the impact on response rates and data quality. Finally, we look for evidence of non-response bias.

The Characteristics Of Visual Perception In Children With Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, Fang-Ling Wang, Ling-Fu Meng, Wan-Ju Tu Dec 2009

The Characteristics Of Visual Perception In Children With Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, Fang-Ling Wang, Ling-Fu Meng, Wan-Ju Tu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Visual perception is the ability to manipulate and integrate the visual information received by brain. Early damage involving the structures of visual perception in the brain will give rise to visual perceptual impairment. The periventricular area is one of those structures related to visual perception. Nearly all preterm infants with spastic diplegia exhibit cystic periventricular leukomalacia. Therefore, it has been wondered if children with diplegic cerebral palsy were at risk of visual perceptual impairment. In fact, behavioral studies have shown that many children with diplegic cerebral palsy demonstrate weakness in some subtests of visual perceptual evaluation. Visual closure, figure-ground, and …

Pressure Pain Threshold, Pressure Pain Tolerance, And Compliance At Different Sites On The Biceps Brachii Muscles Prior To And Following Eccentric Exercise, Jo-Tong Chen, Kuo-Wei Su, Ta-Shen Kuan, Yun-Fu Chou, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) refers to skeletal muscle pain that follows strenuous and unaccustomed physical activity. The intensity of discomfort peaks at 24 to 48 hours, and subsides within 5 to 7 days post-exercise. It appears that DOMS occurs most frequently following unaccustomed eccentric exercise. However, it is not clear whether sensitivity to pain is uniform over the surface of the muscle, or whether some locations become more sensitive following eccentric exercise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of DOMS at various sites of muscle following a bout of eccentric exercise.A total of 25 subjects …

Significant reductions (p<0.05) were found in median compound motor action potential, median sensory nerve action potential and ulnar …

Assessments Of Spasticity By Hoffmann Reflex Parameters In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Juei-Hsiang Wang, Yen-Ho Wang, Chein-Wei Chang, Shin-Liang Pan, Che-Sheng Lin Dec 2009

Assessments Of Spasticity By Hoffmann Reflex Parameters In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Juei-Hsiang Wang, Yen-Ho Wang, Chein-Wei Chang, Shin-Liang Pan, Che-Sheng Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Muscle spasticity is a common problem that affects patients who have suffered spinal cord injury (SCI). It can affect the motor skills, activities of daily living, and quality of life of these patients. The modified Ashworth scale (MAS) is a widely used clinical rating scale for spasticity, but its validity and reliability have been questioned. Much attention has been devoted to the evaluation of spasticity by using electrophysiological approaches. Increased excitation of motor neurons, exaggerated stretch reflex, decreased presynaptic inhibition, and reduced reciprocal inhibition have been found to be associated with spasticity. In several previous studies, the Hoffmann (H) reflex …

Pre-Operative Localization Of A Chest Wall Needle By Ultrasonography: A Casereport, Jannie Ying-Syuan Chen, Tung-Mao Chiang, Yi-Cheng Wu, Chao-Yi Huang, Chih-Chin Hsu, Wen-Chung Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

High-resolution ultrasonography is a useful tool for the localization of non-palpable soft-tissue foreign bodies. A 21-year-old female underwent a routine health examination, during which chest radiography revealed a radio-opaque linear foreign body. The foreign body was located within left posterior chest wall, 4 to 5 cm lateral to the T8 spinous process. The shape indicated a needle. The possible presence of a needle in the chest wall meant that an operation to remove it was imperative. There was no tender point or palpable mass present on the chest wall and, consequently, there was difficulty determining the precise location of the …

Incidence And Risk Factors Analysis Of Lymphedema Secondary To Breast Cancer, Su-Fen Liao, Ya-Fun Lee, Shou-Tung Chen, Shou-Jen Kuo, Wei-Chen Liang, Ta-Sen Wei, Mu-Tai Liu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Lymphedema, the most significant complication of treatment for breast cancer, can result in substantial psychological and physical morbidity. However, no long-term follow-up lymphedema studies yet exist for Taiwanese breast cancer survivors. This study therefore focused on examining frequency and risk factors of lymphedema secondary to breast cancer in Taiwanese patients. Five hundred and seventy patients who received surgical treatment between 1994 and 2000 at Changhua Christian Hospital were retrospectively investigated in October 2002. The incidence of self-reported edema was 28 percent (161/570), and the incidence of lymphedema with circumference difference greater than 2cm was 8.1 percent (46/570). Eighty-four percent of …

The Recovery Index Of Oxygen Saturation From Orthostatic Syncope In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, David S. Liu, Alice M. K. Wong, Shih-Ching Chen, Kang-Ping Lin, Chien-Hung Lai, Walter H. Chang Dec 2009

The Recovery Index Of Oxygen Saturation From Orthostatic Syncope In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, David S. Liu, Alice M. K. Wong, Shih-Ching Chen, Kang-Ping Lin, Chien-Hung Lai, Walter H. Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a common clinical problem for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) at the cervical or high thoracic level when they move from the supine position to the upright position. Patients with severe SCI frequently suffer from symptoms of OH during head-up tilt, ranging from slight lightheadedness to full syncope. Tilt-table training is commonly used in clinical physiotherapy to overcome OH syncope, but this also relies on carefully manual control of the tilt angle and training time by the therapist during training. Up till now, it still has no method to estimate the recovery process of OH …

Combining Therapeutic Ultrasound And Breast Massage For Plugged Ducts: Three Casereports, Yu-Chun Lee, Xiu-Yong Hong, Chin-Teng Chung, Wei-Chih Chen, Hui-Mi Liu, Si-Wa Chan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Plugged ducts are a common problem during lactation. They often occur when the breast is not emptied properly, or when there is local pressure on the breast. Plugged ducts usually occur three to four weeks postpartum. Symptoms include a sensitive lump with well-defined margins in the breast. There may be pain and tenderness in the affected area, although this is not necessarily accompanied by systemic symptoms such as high-grade fever. Milk flow can be blocked and sometimes a tiny white spot can be seen at the opening of the mammary duct on the nipple. Without treatment, plugged ducts can lead …

Clinical Diagnosis Of Mild Misalignment Of Symphysis Pubis Using Ct Scan With Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Of Pelvis: A Casereport, Cheng-Hung Lin, Ching-Hung Hung, Nam-Seng Goh, Chen-Chang Hsiung

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The patients who suffered from symphysis pubis injury would normally be treated in two clinical departments. Symphysis pubis diastasis is an uncommon intrapartum complication which may occur in women with some associative factors such as macrosomic fetus, small pelvis, and rapid descent of presenting part during spontaneous vaginal delivery. The automotive side impacts are a leading cause of injuries to the pubic symphysis which might be combined with major pelvic trauma. Other factors that might contribute to this type of injury is general fall events, although very rare, which would induce minor symphysis pubis injury. Recently, we presented with a …

The Acidic Domains Of The Toc159 Chloroplast Preprotein Receptor Family Are Instrinsically Disordered Protein Domains, Lynn G.L. Richardson, Masoud Jelokhani-Niaraki, Matthew D. Smith

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: The Toc159 family of proteins serve as receptors for chloroplast-destined preproteins. They directly bind to transit peptides, and exhibit preprotein substrate selectivity conferred by an unknown mechanism. The Toc159 receptors each include three domains: C-terminal membrane, central GTPase, and N-terminal acidic (A-) domains. Although the function(s) of the A-domain remains largely unknown, the amino acid sequences are most variable within these domains, suggesting they may contribute to the functional specificity of the receptors.

Results: The physicochemical properties of the A-domains are characteristic of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Using CD spectroscopy we show that the A-domains of two Arabidopsis Toc159 …
