Numeracy: Open-Access Publishing To Reduce The Cost Of Scholarly Journals, Todd A. Chavez

Numeracy

Each fiscal year, as academic librarians throughout the United States prepare materials budgets, a national “groan” ensues. Regardless of their format (i.e. print or digital), serial subscription costs are escalating, in the process impacting the role of the library in advancing scholarly communication . This paper examines some of the economic issues concerning open-access (OA) journal publishing. The importance of quantitative literacy is suggested for librarians and academics seeking a better understanding of alternatives to traditional journal subscription models and to anyone considering ventures into OA publishing. Quantitative literacy is essential for managing alternatives to the rising cost of scholarly …

Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh

Numeracy

This paper compares the academic performance of students in three similar elementary statistics courses taught by the same instructor, but with the lab component differing among the three. One course is traditionally taught without a lab component; the second with a lab component using scenarios and an extensive use of technology, but without explicit coordination between lab and lecture; and the third using a lab component with an extensive use of technology that carefully coordinates the lab with the lecture. Extensive use of technology means, in this context, using Minitab software in the lab section, doing homework and quizzes using …

Developing Evaluation Instrument For Mathematics Educational Software, Wahyu Setyaningrum

PYTHAGORAS : Jurnal Matematika dan Pendidikan Matematika

The rapid increase and availability of mathematics software, either for classroom or individual learning activities, presents a challenge for teachers. It has been argued that many products are limited in quality. Some of the more commonly used software products have been criticized for poor content, activities which fail to address some learning issues, poor graphics presentation, inadequate documentation, and other technical problems. The challenge for schools is to ensure that the educational software used in classrooms is appropriate and effective in supporting intended outcomes and goals. This paper aimed to develop instrument for evaluating mathematics educational software in order to …

The field portion of SusAg 509, which takes place every year during the first two weeks of August, brings students face-to-face with different understandings of sustainability and the diverse complexity of Midwestern agriculture. Dialogue and reflection turn the raw stuff of experience into learning, as students discover the power and validity of multiple perspectives. More than two dozen site visits help make abstract concepts, such as the economy and social …

Paradoxical Perceptions Of Problems Associated With Unconventional Natural Gas Development, Gene L. Theodori Dec 2009

Paradoxical Perceptions Of Problems Associated With Unconventional Natural Gas Development, Gene L. Theodori

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Data collected in a general population survey from a random sample of individuals in two counties located in the Barnett Shale region of Texas were used to empirically explore potentially problematic issues associated with unconventional natural gas development. Moderate support was found for the hypothesis that individuals residing in places with diverse levels of energy development exhibit dissimilar perceptions of potentially problematic issues. The results indicate residents of the county where the natural gas industry was more mature (Wise County) were significantly more likely than residents of the county where the natural gas industry was less established (Johnson County) to …

Model Learning Outcomes For Introductory Rural Sociology: A Proposal And Rationale, Jennifer Steele Dec 2009

Model Learning Outcomes For Introductory Rural Sociology: A Proposal And Rationale, Jennifer Steele

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

While rural sociologists have demonstrated their commitment to sharing ideas about teaching approaches and methods, they have given less systematic attention to the content of introductory rural sociology and its connections to the field’s mission of improving rural well-being. The purpose of this note is to make a case for developing model learning outcomes for introductory rural sociology and to present an organizing framework and sample outcomes for initiating discussion. First, a rationale for using learning outcomes as the means of sharing professional expectations is presented. Next, the methods used to arrive at a proposed organizational framework are described. It …

Voiding Dysfunction In Cerebellar Stroke: A Casereport, Chi-Chung Ho, Yu-Hui Huang, Su-Ju Tsai, Ko-Shin Jian, Yung-Liang Kao, Liu-Ing Bih

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Animal studies have suggested that the cerebellum plays an inhibitory role in the collecting phase and a facilitatory role in the emptying phase of the voiding reflex in the micturition cycle.A 12 year old girl was admitted who complained of a headache and had a disturbance in consciousness after running in school. An emergent brain computed tomography scan showed massive bleeding over bilateral cerebellum hemispheres, vermis, and ventricles. An occipital craniotomy was performed to remove the hematoma. Simultaneously, an arterio-venous malformation was found and excised. She regained consciousness 3 weeks later, thereafter urine retention was noted as well as trunkal …

Effects Of Modified Constraint-Induced Therapy Versus Bilateral Movement Training On Upper Extremity Performance In Patients With Chronic Stroke: A Kinematic Analysis, Ya-Fen Chang, Wen-Chung Tsai, Chia-Ying Chung, Yin-Chou Lin, Yueh-Tsen Chen, Ching-Yi Wu, Ken-Chung Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background and Objective: Several evidence-based treatment programs for improving upper extremity functions such as constraint-induced therapy (CIT)/modified CIT (mCIT) and bilateral movement training (BMT) have been developed recently. The mCIT program combines restraint of the unaffected hand with intensive training of the affected hand, and BMT involves intensive bilateral training with symmetrical functional training. In this study, the relative efficacy of mCIT vs. BMT was compared by a kinematic analysis that quantitatively assessed motor control in high functioning stroke patients when performing unilateral and bilateral functional tasks. Methods: In a pretest-posttest, randomized controlled trial, twenty-three stroke patients were randomly allocated to …

Assessment Of Individual Activities Of Daily Living And Its Association With Self-Rated Health Status In Elderly People, Yu-Ning Hu, Chin-Ching Li, Chia Lee, Rung-Huei Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu Dec 2009

Assessment Of Individual Activities Of Daily Living And Its Association With Self-Rated Health Status In Elderly People, Yu-Ning Hu, Chin-Ching Li, Chia Lee, Rung-Huei Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Health-related quality-of-life in the elderly generally encompasses freedom from disease, good physical and psycho-social well-being, and preventing the loss of function in activities of daily living (ADL). Some indices of ADL, such as basic ADL and instrumental ADL, are considered to be measures of functional status in the elderly. However, in most studies, functional status is evaluated by either the summed ADL score or disability score in one or more ADLs. No studies have investigated the association between an individual's ADL function and self-rated health status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of functional status (i.e., …

Does Patronage Still Drive Politics For The Rural Poor In The Developing World? A Comparative Perspective From The Livestock Sector, David K. Leonard, Jennifer Brass, Michael Nelson, Sophal Ear, Dan Fahey, Tasha Fairfield, Martha Johnson Gning, Michael Halderman, Brendan Mcsherry, Devra Coren Moehler, Wilson Prichard, Robin L. Turner, Tuong Vu, Jeroen Dijkman

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Is the analysis of patron–client networks still important to the understanding of developing country politics or has it now been overtaken by a focus on ‘social capital’? Drawing on seventeen country studies of the political environment for livestock policy in poor countries, this article concludes that although the nature of patronage has changed significantly, it remains highly relevant to the ways peasant interests are treated. Peasant populations were found either to have no clear connection to their political leaders or to be controlled by political clientage. Furthermore, communities ‘free’ of patron–client ties to the centre generally are not better represented …

Active Ageing On The Company Level: The Theory Vs. The Day-To-Day Practice In Slovenia, Jana Žnidaršič, Vlado Dimovski Dec 2009

Active Ageing On The Company Level: The Theory Vs. The Day-To-Day Practice In Slovenia, Jana Žnidaršič, Vlado Dimovski

Economic and Business Review

The need to improve the labour market participation of older people has received ever greater attention in recent years, especially in view of the significant demographic changes the European Union will undergo due to population ageing. Besides the macroeconomic level, implications of this trend are strongly seen at the company level, particularly when it comes to managing the ageing workforce. Companies are thus introducing new approaches, policies and instruments which seek to foster the higher employment rates of the elderly by implementing the active-ageing concept in business and HRM practice. The paper aims to highlight the development of active-ageing initiatives …

Spinal Intramedullary Arteriovenous Malformations With Tetraplegia: A Casereport, Ching-Yao Yang, Shin-Liang Pan, Yen-Ho Wang, Wei-Hwa Liaw

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Spinal arteriovenous malformations is a rare disease. The initial signs are usually in the forms of nonspecific sensory symptoms such as pains and parasthesia; therefore, it is difficult to conclusively diagnose this disease. Here, we report the case of a 30-year-old woman who suffered from a sudden weakness in the 4 limbs 15 years ago. The symptoms subsided after supportive care; she was discharged from a local hospital without further follow ups. Approximately 5 years ago, she had a sudden attack of pains in her left shoulder. The symptoms rapidly progressed to paralysis of the 4 limbs. She was sent …

The Research And Development Of Foot Pressure Testing Piece, Mu-Jung Kao, Ming-Jor Lo, Cheng-Kung Cheng, Hung-Wen Wei Dec 2009

The Research And Development Of Foot Pressure Testing Piece, Mu-Jung Kao, Ming-Jor Lo, Cheng-Kung Cheng, Hung-Wen Wei

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The purpose of this study was to design an insole-style testing piece for a quick and easy dynamic foot pressure test. Current commercial foot pressure systems are costly and complicated to operate. These systems are not suitable for extensive evaluations of patient's foot or orthoses, either. The material used in this research is TPE-PS shock absorption foam. This foam has three special features: (1) excellent surface contact with foot contour, soft textures that do not irritate the foot, (2) creates permanent foot pressure imprints after brief walking, (3) the foam material does not crack or break under excessive foot pressure. When …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Neurotransmitter dopamine has relation with neuro-psychiatric disease, it also has effect on motor function for healthy individuals and also determines the outcome of rehabilitation for neuro-psychiatric disease patients. Finger Tapping Test (FTT), a neuro-psychological test, is thought to be associated with dopamine. Therefore, the goal of this study is to investigate the association relationship between dopamine genes polymorphism (DRD2 TaqI) and FTT. Method: We recruit healthy Han Chinese, age between 20 and 60 years old, having no neuro-psychiatric illness and family history for dopamine genes polymorphism (DRD2 TaqI) and FTT assessment. Result: Total 106 cases were enrolled in the study. …

Clinical Experience Of Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Dysfunction In A Patient With Hydrocephalus After Brain Injury: A Casereport, Shean-Jing Lin, Yun-Yee Chen, Mu-Jung Kao, Ching-Yang Lin, Sheng-Huang Hsiao Dec 2009

Clinical Experience Of Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Dysfunction In A Patient With Hydrocephalus After Brain Injury: A Casereport, Shean-Jing Lin, Yun-Yee Chen, Mu-Jung Kao, Ching-Yang Lin, Sheng-Huang Hsiao

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

We report a case of an adult patient with post-traumatic hydrocephalus who was treated using a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt with a fixed pressure setting valve. Slit ventricle syndrome was found two months later and an antisiphon device (ASD) was added. A fixed pressure valve with ASD was found not to be optimal in terms of improving his neurological symptoms and a programmable valve system was therefore implanted with a pressure setting of 140 mmH2O in the beginning. The valve then was gradually programmed to reduce down to 70 mmH2O over two months. This case demonstrates that selection of a shunting …

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis Of Bicipitoradial Bursitis: A Casereport, Kuan-Wen Chen, Yi-Pin Chiang Dec 2009

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis Of Bicipitoradial Bursitis: A Casereport, Kuan-Wen Chen, Yi-Pin Chiang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The bicipitoradial bursa is located between the distal biceps tendon and the radial tuberosity. The bursa functions as a buffer to reduce the friction between tendon and bone during pronation of the forearm. Bicipitoradial bursitis most frequently results from repetitive mechanical microtrauma by supination and pronation movements of the forearm, and it may cause painful swelling at the antecubital fossa. However, only a few cases of bicipitoradial bursitis have been reported to be diagnosed by ultrasound. We report a case of a 32-year-old woman with a tender soft tissue mass in her right antecubital area. Musculoskeletal ultrasound depicted a distended …
