A Physics-Based Modeling And Real-Time Simulation Of Biomechanical Diffusion Process Through Optical Imaged Alveolar Tissues On Graphical Processing Units, Ilhan Kaya

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

Tissue engineering has broad applications fro1n creating the much needed engineered tissue and organ structures for regenerative medicine to providing in vitro testbeds for drug testing. In the later, application domain, creating alveolar lung tissue and simulating the diffusion process of oxygen and other possible agents front the air into the blood stream as well as modeling the removal of carbon dioxide and other possible entities-from the blood stream are of critical importance to simulating lung functions in various environments. In this paper, we propose a physics-based model to simulate the alveolar gas exchange and the alveolar diffusion process. Tissue …

Substrate And Regulation Of Mitochondrial Μ-Calpain, Aashish Joshi Jan 2009

Substrate And Regulation Of Mitochondrial Μ-Calpain, Aashish Joshi

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

μ -Calpain is localized to the mitochondrial intermembrane space. Apoptosisinducing factor (AIF), which executes caspase-independent cell death, is also localized to the mitochondrial intermembrane space. Following processing at the N-terminus, AIF becomes truncated (tAIF) and is released from mitochondria. The protease responsible for AIF processing has not been established. The same submitochondrial localization of mitochondrial μ-calpain and AIF gives support to the hypothesis that mitochondrial μ-calpain may be responsible for processing AIF. Atractyloside-induced tAIF release in rat liver mitochondria was inhibited by cysteine protease inhibitor MDL28170, but not by calpain inhibitors PD150606 or calpastatin. Moreover, μ-calpain immunoreactivity was difficult to …

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus: Pharmacoepidemiologic Assessment Of Common Medications, Aisling R. Caffrey Jan 2009

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus: Pharmacoepidemiologic Assessment Of Common Medications, Aisling R. Caffrey

Open Access Dissertations

Background. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a prevalent organism, causing serious infections which are difficult and expensive to treat. Despite the implementation of evidence-based infection control practices and development of newer efficacious antibiotics, MRSA infection and colonization rates continue to increase. Treatments for MRSA have received considerable research attention over the past 10 years, yet several gaps in knowledge remain. In particular, controversy regarding the effectiveness of linezolid as compared to vancomycin in treating MRSA infections persists, and few risk factors associated with mupirocin resistance have been identified. Methods. In the first manuscript of this dissertation, we sought to estimate …

A Grounded Theory Analysis Of The Rhode Island Community Response To The Station Nightclub Fire Disaster, Dustin Brent Wielt Jan 2009

A Grounded Theory Analysis Of The Rhode Island Community Response To The Station Nightclub Fire Disaster, Dustin Brent Wielt

Open Access Dissertations

On February 20, 2003, 462 people were present at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island for a rock concert by the band Great White. A fire broke out which resulted in 100 deaths and 215 people injured. How do communities respond when disaster strikes? Much of what is known about community response to disaster is based on anecdotal accounts of first responders and retrospective research studies that begin weeks or months after the disaster event. In this study, all newspaper articles about The Station fire were collected from a local newspaper, The Providence Journal, on Days 1-120 postdisaster. …

Replacing Slingshots With Swords: Implications Of The Antigua-Gambling 22.6 Panel Report For Developing Countries And The World Trading System, Georgia Hamann

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In December 2007, the WTO awarded Antigua the right to suspend TRIPS obligations at a value of $21 million. This decision represents the WTO's continuing evolution into a body capable of addressing the concerns of developed countries while balancing the legitimate interests of developed nations. For the second time, the WTO has authorized suspension of intellectual property protection under the TRIPS agreement. Such a remedy, if widely adopted, has the capacity to address concerns surrounding effective retaliation by small economies versus large economies, which traditionally have discouraged developing countries from participating in WTO dispute resolution. Additionally, the remedy seems likely …

The Influence Of Diagnostic Labels, Gender, And Ethnicity On Teacher Perceptions, Expectancies, And Attributions: A Consideration Of Closure, Acceptance, And Stigmatization, Deanna Rae Voisine Jan 2009

The Influence Of Diagnostic Labels, Gender, And Ethnicity On Teacher Perceptions, Expectancies, And Attributions: A Consideration Of Closure, Acceptance, And Stigmatization, Deanna Rae Voisine

Open Access Dissertations

The present study sought to determine the impact of diagnostic labels, gender, and ethnicity on teachers' perceptions, expectancies, and attributions. Following a pilot study to determine if the measure had adequate reliability, approximately 3630 instructional letters were distributed to 65 schools in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. The Teacher Attitude and Attribution Scale (TAAS; Voisine, 2008), a 42 item questionnaire, measured teachers' perceptions, expectancies, and attributions (for parent/family factors, student factors, and teacher/school factors) for a hypothetical student. Vignettes at the start of the questionnaire detailed the student's behavioral problems and had the student's gender (male/female), ethnicity (Hispanic/Caucasian), and diagnostic …

Preprofessional Curriculum In Preparation For Doctor Of Pharmacy Educational Programs, Eric G. Boyce, Lisa A. Lawson

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

The preprofessional pharmacy curriculum provides the foundation for the professional curriculum. Basic requirements are noted in the ACPE Standards and Guidelines, but there is considerable variation in the preprofessional curriculum requirements for entry into doctor of pharmacy programs in the United States. Changes in higher education, pharmacy practice, and health care continue to drive the need to evaluate the preprofessional curriculum. The objectives of this white paper were to create model preprofessional curricula that would enable students to be successful during and after entry into the professional curriculum. Using an evidence-based approach where possible, a number of factors were found …

Deficiencies In The Practicum Phase Of Field-Based Education: Students’ Views, Edwin Ralph, Keith Walker, Randy Wimmer

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

A supervised practical experience of on-the-job training forms an essential part of the pre-service preparation of professionals across disciplines. This article reports results from a recent study examining the views of 234 teacher candidates regarding the most negative aspects of their experiences in the 16-week extended-practicum. Four broad themes reflected the post-interns’ responses on the negative elements: (a) individual personal/professional challenges, (b) site-based interpersonal concerns, (c) university- related policy/procedural problems, and (d) practicum-office difficulties. Implications are discussed for the practicum leaders of this program and those from other institutions interested in preventing or reducing such limitations from hampering the effectiveness …
