Biomedical Technology: Supporting Movement, Petros Katsioloudis

STEMPS Faculty Publications

According to the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, an estimated 8.5 million children 21 years and younger have a disability (Jans & Stoddard, 1999). After about a decade, with the development of new and sophisticated materials (aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and carbon fibers) and the integration of electronics, it was then possible to significantly improve the performance of prostheses, built with the so-called endo skeletal (or skeletal-modular) method (Mora, Beratni & Pedrotti, 2006).

Using The Fourteenth Amendment To Protect The Integrity Of Kinship Foster Families, Jennifer Baum, Teresa J. Grogan Jan 2009

Using The Fourteenth Amendment To Protect The Integrity Of Kinship Foster Families, Jennifer Baum, Teresa J. Grogan

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

As children’s advocates, we know well the value of an extended family to a dependency case. Living with a family member is often considered by children removed from their parents to be the “second best.” Such arrangements are often more comforting, less socially stigmatizing, and more capable at facilitating children’s normal daily routines, including school, medical care, and religious training, than stranger foster care. The social and psychological benefits of kinship care are well documented. One recent retrospective study concluded that children in kinship foster care have fewer behavioral problems three years after placement than do children who were …

Representation Reinforcement: A Legislative Solution To A Legislative Process Problem, Anita S. Krishnakumar Jan 2009

Representation Reinforcement: A Legislative Solution To A Legislative Process Problem, Anita S. Krishnakumar

Faculty Publications

One of the most valuable—and disturbing—insights offered by public choice theory has been the recognition that wealthy, well-organized interests with narrow, intense preferences often dominate the legislative process while diffuse, unorganized interests go under-represented. Responding to this insight, legal scholars in the fields of statutory interpretation and administrative law have suggested that the solution to the problem of representational inequality lies with the courts. Indeed, over the past two decades, scholars in these fields have offered up a host of John Hart Ely-inspired representation reinforcing "canons of construction," designed to encourage judges to use their role as statutory interpreters to …

How Not To Invent A Patent Crisis, F. Scott Kieff, Henry E. Smith Jan 2009

How Not To Invent A Patent Crisis, F. Scott Kieff, Henry E. Smith

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This short essay written for a broad audience addresses the problems that are at the center of current debates in academic and policy circles about the patent system. Most current patent reform proposals are designed to give officials and courts more power to weaken or eliminate ‘‘unworthy’’ patents and take primary aim at so-called patent trolls. This essay argues that in light of the rapid, and excessive, changes that have already occurred in the courts, what patent law needs is a tweaking of existing safety valves and processes - not opening the floodgates to more discretion and uncertainty.

Fostering Community Of Relationships Via Online Discussion, Kellie Smith, Rn, Msn Jan 2009

Fostering Community Of Relationships Via Online Discussion, Kellie Smith, Rn, Msn

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Background:

Statistics reveal that online education continues to expand in significant numbers throughout higher education. Nursing education must evolve and incorporate instructional technologies to meet the needs of the new era of tech-savvy students. An important aspect to consider for online and nursing education is creating and fostering a strong sense of community among students. Establishing a sense of community builds relationships among nursing students, assists in developing a comfort level with online course technology, is conducive to learning, and encourages reflection on learning possibilities. It has been established that online threaded discussions can encourage the growth of a learning …

An Integrated Approach To The Toxicity Assessment Of Irish Marine Sediments Application Of Porewater Toxicity Identification Evaluation (Tie) To Irish Marine Sediments, Ailbhe Macken, Michelle Giltrap, Barry Foley, Evin Mcgovern, Brendan Mchugh, Maria Davoren Jan 2009

An Integrated Approach To The Toxicity Assessment Of Irish Marine Sediments Application Of Porewater Toxicity Identification Evaluation (Tie) To Irish Marine Sediments, Ailbhe Macken, Michelle Giltrap, Barry Foley, Evin Mcgovern, Brendan Mchugh, Maria Davoren

Articles

An integrated approach to the ecotoxicological assessment of Irish marine sediments was carried out between 2004 and 2007. Phase I Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) of sediment porewaters from two sites on the east coast of Ireland were conducted. Initial Tier I screening of three Irish sites identified the need for TIE after significant toxicity was observed with Tisbe battagliai and the Microtox® assay at two of the assayed sites (Alexandra Basin and Dunmore East). Porewaters classified as toxic were characterised using four manipulations, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelation, sodium thiosulphate addition, C18 Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) and Cation Exchange (CE) SPE. …

A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa Jan 2009

A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Hydrogen is most often produced on an industrial scale by catalytic steam methane reforming, an equilibrium-limited, highly endothermic process requiring the substantial addition of heat at elevated temperatures. The extent of reaction, or conversion efficiency, of this process is known to be heat transfer limited. Scaling the industrial process equipment down to the size required for small, compact fuel cell systems has encountered difficulties due to increased heat losses at smaller scales. One promising approach to effectively scale down the reforming process is to coat the catalyst directly onto the heat exchange surfaces of an integrated reactor/heat exchanger. In this …

Queer Legal Victories: Intersectionality Revisited, Darren Rosenblum Jan 2009

Queer Legal Victories: Intersectionality Revisited, Darren Rosenblum

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

In my 1995 article "Queer Intersectionality and the Failure of Lesbian and Gay ‘Victories,’” I merged queer and intersectionality theories to critique four lesbian and gay legal “victories.” I argued that queer identity intersected with other identity characteristics, yielding queer communities whose diverse needs reflect their various class, race, gender, and sex identifications. This intersectional perspective led me to view these decisions as victories for only a privileged subset of queer communities that, "but for" their gay or lesbian identity, conform to the "American dream" (De Lauretis 1991; Robson 1992). The United States' juridical heterosexism stifled the progressive potential …

Response Of Academics To Demands For Change In Engineering Education, Kevin Kelly

Conference papers

This paper attempts to show what academics and other stakeholders think about academic change in an Institute of Technology in Ireland as this HEI attempts to respond to a rapidly changing external s becoming a university and moving to a new campus on a green field site. It is a summary of aspects of a doctoral thesis undertaken by an experienced academic that set out to explore how the unprecedented challenges now facing higher education internationally might best be met in the Dublin Institute of Technology. It is insider research and this paper identifies and examines barriers and enablers to …

Promises We Have Kept: Using Grounded Theory Methodology To Understand Developmental Factors That Contribute To Caucasian Low-Income Parents Positive Assessment Of Marital Health, S. Greg Thompson Jan 2009

Promises We Have Kept: Using Grounded Theory Methodology To Understand Developmental Factors That Contribute To Caucasian Low-Income Parents Positive Assessment Of Marital Health, S. Greg Thompson

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Low-income Caucasian married parents described lifespan processes and conditions that contributed to their individual assessments that their marriage was healthy. Spouses participated in an interview together, followed later by an individual interview with each. Interview scripts referenced the study‘s primary research questions which sought their reflections on (a) external conditions that they considered to be important to their development, and (b) personal thoughts, emotions and behaviors they deemed relevant to the success of their marriage. A third research question called for integration of participants‘ reflections into a cogent grounded theory regarding successful low-income marriages. Analysis incorporated grounded theory methods, and …
