Dissertations

Problem. The development of critical-thinking skills during the professional training of respiratory therapists is imperative for good practice. Research evidence suggests that interactive instructional strategies are far more effective than traditional lectures. This case study describes the beliefs and practices of faculty members in an academically strong program in view of developing critical thinking.

Method. A qualitative, single case-study design was used to identify critical-thinking strategies and beliefs incorporated by the faculty. The program was nominated by expert members …

Influences Of Supplementing A Mannan Oligosaccharide Containing Product To Pig Diets On Sow And Weanling Pig Performance, I-Fen Hung

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The objective of these studies was to evaluate the effect of supplying mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) to pig diets on both weanling pig and sow performances.

Nursery pigs challenged with LPS to stimulate an immune challenge had increased body temperature and respiratory rate as well as elevated serum cortisol and TNF-α concentration, MOS-supplemented pigs had a lower rectal temperature and respiratory rate which implied that MOS improves some aspect of the immune function of piglets.

MOS supplementation in sow diets during late gestation and lactation had no effect on litter size, but the piglets from MOS-fed sows were heavier at birth …

This is because governments societies, and individuals all exist in a continuous state of change. Governments elect new leaders, societies adopt new values and individuals grow in age. Non-profit organization need to respond to changes quickly and effectively. Many non-profits become too attached to their current cause or mission to recognize and respond to change. They forget that their mission must be need-based and adaptive. Individuals can suffer from this same error. People go through life on autopilot, especially within …

Efforts to reshape the life opportunities for working families in America face a critical juncture in 2009 and beyond, involving both new opportunities and new challenges. This critical juncture arises due to two recent changes. First, 2008 brought important changes in national political dynamics as a result of the economic meltdown and the election of President Barack Obama and a new Congress. Second, internal dynamics within community organizing efforts in poor, working-class and middle-class communities have changed, with significant progress made over the last decade in re-engaging working families in the political process. This report uses the recent experience of …

Seven Deadly Factors Associated With Technology Company Failure, Andres C. Salazar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Seven factors associated with technology company failure (or death) are described along with features that distinguish each factor. A company is commonly defined to have failed when it passes through a stage of insolvency and then an asset sale or a merger. It is well known that several critical factors can lead to a successful launch of a company – market timing, management experience, product differentiation, product quality, financing, sales execution, team compatibility, etc. High tech companies deal with additional risks at launch such as commercialization difficulties, team formation and technology lifespan. Little research has been done on identifying major …

New Graduate Nurses' Perceptions Of Simulation Training, Karen S. Britt

Master's Theses and Capstones

New graduate nurses enter practice with basic critical thinking skills and have minimal experience applying learned concepts into clinical practice. Hiring institutions aim orientation programs at developing new graduate nurses' skills so that they are better prepared to meet patient needs. Human Patient Simulation is one tool employers have recently begun using. A qualitative study was conducted to gain insight into seven new graduate nurses' perceptions of utilizing simulated mock code training during the orientation process. Analysis of the focus group discussion identified four emerging themes: Developing Confidence, Developing Knowledge Base, Developing Critical Thinking, and Developing a Sense of Realism. …
