Developing Methods And Measures To Assess Progress In Achieving Access Goals Of The Americans With Disabilities Act: A Case Study Of Small Towns In Montana, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Nancy Arnold, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute Jan 2009

Developing Methods And Measures To Assess Progress In Achieving Access Goals Of The Americans With Disabilities Act: A Case Study Of Small Towns In Montana, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Nancy Arnold, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted without any baseline data against which to measure progress on achieving its public access goals. To date, no one has collected local, state, or national data to establish such a baseline or to assess progress in achieving those goals empirically. We developed a simple accessibility assessment tool that can aggregate data across businesses and communities. We then established a sampling frame for all Montana incorporated communities with populations of 2,500 – 10,000. We randomly selected 327 businesses to observe from a universe of 2,151 businesses that met inclusion criteria, and we trained …

The Omega-3 Fatty Acid Content Of Krill Protein Concentrate Influences Bioavailability, Tissue Deposition, Peroxidation, And Metabolism In Young Rats, Kayla Marie Bridges Jan 2009

The Omega-3 Fatty Acid Content Of Krill Protein Concentrate Influences Bioavailability, Tissue Deposition, Peroxidation, And Metabolism In Young Rats, Kayla Marie Bridges

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Objective. Krill protein concentrate (KPC) has been determined to be a high quality protein for human consumption with the advantage of being a rich source of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (o-3 PUFAs), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The o-3 PUFAs in krill are mainly associated with phospholipids, which have been proposed to result in high incorporation of o-3 PUFAs into tissues and to be stable against oxidation. The study objective was to determine bioavailability, tissue deposition, peroxidation, and metabolism of o-3 PUFAs in rats fed KPC.;Methods. Young female Sprague-Dawley rats (n=10/group) were fed ad libitum isocaloric diets …

Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis In Aspergillus Fumigatus : Association With Sporulation And Clustered Genes Common Among Ergot Fungi, Christine M. Coyle Jan 2009

Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis In Aspergillus Fumigatus : Association With Sporulation And Clustered Genes Common Among Ergot Fungi, Christine M. Coyle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ergot alkaloids, indole-derived mycotoxins, interact with multiple monoamine neurotransmitter receptors and cause disease in exposed individuals. They have been well studied in the ergot fungus, Claviceps purpurea, and have been reported in some closely related grass endophytes, as well as the distantly related opportunistic human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. A. fumigatus, which sporulates prolifically, produces clavines, specifically festuclavine and fumigaclavines A, B, and C in association with asexual spores and the total mass of alkaloids constitutes over 1% of the spore mass. These alkaloids differ from those of most clavicipitaceous fungi, which consist of different clavines and often more complex lysergic …

Conditioned Reinforcing Value Of The Sample Stimulus And Resistance To Change Of Delayed Matching -To -Sample Performance In Pigeons, Yusuke Hayashi Jan 2009

Conditioned Reinforcing Value Of The Sample Stimulus And Resistance To Change Of Delayed Matching -To -Sample Performance In Pigeons, Yusuke Hayashi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pigeons were trained on a two-component multiple schedule with a chain schedule in each component. According to a variable-interval schedule in the initial link, pecks on a center key produced a terminal link with a delayed matching-to-sample trial. A trial began with the onset of a red or green (Experiment 1) or green or blue (Experiment 2) light as a sample stimulus on the center key. The sample stimulus was followed by a retention interval during which all keys were dark, and then by comparison stimuli on the side keys. A response to the comparison stimulus that matched the sample …

When Two Become One: Marital Couples' Public Performances And Couple Identity, Carrie D. Kennedy-Lightsey Jan 2009

When Two Become One: Marital Couples' Public Performances And Couple Identity, Carrie D. Kennedy-Lightsey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Communication researchers know little about marital couples' public performances, or how marital couples communicate as a nonsummative whole when in the presence of important others (e.g., friends, family, co-workers). Two studies were conducted to examine marital couples' public performances from a Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) (Hecht, 1993) framework. In the first study, 153 marital couples completed self-report measures to assess how marital couples' attachment styles and relationship awareness are related to identity gaps during public performances as well as how identity gaps relate to a variety of outcomes including communication satisfaction, feelings of being understood, conversational appropriateness, relationship satisfaction, …

Random Knn Modeling And Variable Selection For High Dimensional Data, Shengqiao Li Jan 2009

Random Knn Modeling And Variable Selection For High Dimensional Data, Shengqiao Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

High dimensional data is widely available in bioinformatics, chemometrics and other applications. For example, in gene expression experiments, tens of thousands of genes are probed. Phenotype data may be clinical data such as tumor types, or quantities measuring biological characteristics of a subject. While such high dimensional data can be readily generated, successful analysis and modeling of these data is highly challenging.;Random KNN, as proposed in this dissertation, is a novel generalization of traditional nearest-neighbor modeling. Random KNN consists of an ensemble of base k nearest-neighbor models, each taking a random subset of the input variables. A theoretical and empirical …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This qualitative phenomenological study examined selected middle school teachers' perceptions of character education in one rural county in northwestern West Virginia. It investigated how they think about and implement character education, what they consider to be obstacles that interfere with the teaching of character education, as well as factors that may foster delivery. Research questions include: (1) What are selected middle school public school teachers' perceptions of character education in terms of how do teachers define character education? How important is character education? (2) How do selected middle school teachers implement character education? (3) What fosters and inhibits the implementation …

Choice Between Schedules Of Reinforcement With And Without Response-Pacing Requirements, Leigh Schrimpf Jan 2009

Choice Between Schedules Of Reinforcement With And Without Response-Pacing Requirements, Leigh Schrimpf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate (DRL) and differential-reinforcement-of-high-rate (DRH) schedules specify a certain pace of responding eligible for reinforcement. The present study assessed the value of a paced schedule of reinforcement using a concurrent-chains schedule. Pigeon's pecks on the left and right initial-link keys led to one of two terminal-link VI 60-s schedules, programmed on the center key. Completion of a terminal-link schedule always led to access to grain. The value of a terminal-link schedule was measured by the initial-link choice proportions. In the baseline, pecks on either initial-link key produced access to one of two unpaced terminal-link schedules every 60 s, on average. …

The Role Of Emotional Intelligence On Coach-Athlete Relationships And Motivational Climate, Eric E. Steege Jan 2009

The Role Of Emotional Intelligence On Coach-Athlete Relationships And Motivational Climate, Eric E. Steege

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research has revealed that Emotional Intelligence is linked to improved conflict resolution, enhanced social attachments and mental health, and the ability to create a collective set of goals that motivate others (Pau & Croucher, 2003). The recent surge of research assessing the role EI may play in leadership effectiveness, motivation, and social attachments within non-sport domains overlaps with similar research within sport that assesses the influence of emotion on coaching effectiveness (Frijda & Mesquita, 1994; Mageau & Vallerand, 2003). Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine if higher EI coached athletes (N=34) varied compared to lower EI coached …

Diagnosing Policy Dynamics: The Birth & Evolution Of The Pharmaceutical Subsystem, Katie R. Stores Jan 2009

Diagnosing Policy Dynamics: The Birth & Evolution Of The Pharmaceutical Subsystem, Katie R. Stores

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The rising cost of prescription drugs in the United States has led patients---older populations and the disabled especially, to seek relief through foreign nations, and internet mail-order sites, which are often hosted and condoned by state and local governments. Patients are traveling to Canada and Mexico to purchase affordable prescription drugs. According to the Congressional Budget Office, "American seniors alone will spend 1.8 trillion dollars on pharmaceuticals over the next ten years" (U.S. Senate 2007, S 251). This research examines the agenda status and change of pharmaceutical regulation by tracing the evolution of the pharmaceutics subsystem. By employing a punctuated …

Isolated Polyethylene Exchange Versus Acetabular Revision For Polyethylene Wear, Camilo Restrepo, Elie Ghanem, Carrie Houssock, Mathew Austin, Javad Parvizi, William J. Hozack Jan 2009

Isolated Polyethylene Exchange Versus Acetabular Revision For Polyethylene Wear, Camilo Restrepo, Elie Ghanem, Carrie Houssock, Mathew Austin, Javad Parvizi, William J. Hozack

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Polyethylene wear and osteolysis are not uncommon in THA mid- and long-term. In asymptomatic patients the dilemma faced by the orthopaedic surgeon is whether to revise the cup and risk damage to the supporting columns and even pelvic discontinuity or to perform isolated polyethylene exchange and risk a high rate of postoperative recurrent instability and dislocation that will necessitate further surgery. We retrospectively reviewed 62 patients (67 hips) who underwent revision arthroplasty for polywear and osteolysis. Thirty-six hips had isolated polyethylene exchange, while 31 had full acetabular revision. The minimum followup was 2 years (mean, 2.8 years; range, 2-5 years). …

Are Sisters Doing It (All) For Themselves? Elderly Black Women And Healthcare Decision Making, Carlene Buchanan Turner

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the effects of health values on the decisions made by elderly Black women to use self-care methods and homecare services. The research is grounded in the healthicization or wellness promotion paradigm, which prescribes behavioral or lifestyle changes for previously biomedically defined events.

The dissertation consists of both quantitative and qualitative research. The quantitative component focuses on a sample of Black women over 70 years old (N= 642) from the 2000 NHI Second Longitudinal Study on Aging dataset. The qualitative component analyzes ten in-depth interviews with respondents from Southern Maryland used to supplement the quantitative findings.

Although the …

Navigating The Gaze: Young People's Intimate Knowledge With Surveilled Spaces At School, Patricia Krueger Jan 2009

Navigating The Gaze: Young People's Intimate Knowledge With Surveilled Spaces At School, Patricia Krueger

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The 1980s introduced numerous state and federal policies that created a similar ideology of discipline and punishment in the educational system and the criminal justice system, a phenomenon known today as the school-to-prison pipeline. Several critical elements are involved in the production and maintenance of the school-to-prison pipeline, such as zero tolerance regulations, surveillance technologies, and strengthened in-school discipline practices. In this dissertation I argue that these elements of the pipeline maintain a strong presence and occupy the physical spaces of public schools. Moreover, surveillance cameras and police officers are most often installed in the cities' most under-resourced public schools, …

Divided Men: The Masculinity/Marriage Dilemma In The Novels Of George Eliot, Danny Sexton Jan 2009

Divided Men: The Masculinity/Marriage Dilemma In The Novels Of George Eliot, Danny Sexton

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Studies of Victorian masculinities have been primarily concerned with how men defined and were defined within the public sphere. This limited focus has ignored their private and domestic lives, itself an exemplification of the separate sphere theory. This dissertation explores what I called the masculinity/ marriage dilemma, a situation in which men feel that they must choose between a public life and a private one. George Eliot's male characters are divided, feeling themselves pulled in what they perceived as two different routes towards manhood. Related to this predicament are issues of power, particularly between men and women, men and other …

Raising Children The American Way: Court-Mandated Parenting Education In Alameda, California, Nicole D. Laborde Jan 2009

Raising Children The American Way: Court-Mandated Parenting Education In Alameda, California, Nicole D. Laborde

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Based on ethnographic research in Alameda County, California, this dissertation examines the parenting practices and knowledge that are taught in court-mandated parenting classes along with those of parents enrolled in these classes. In California, two of the primary reasons that parents would be mandated to take classes are because of involvement with Child and Family Services (CFS) or in a custody dispute that reaches the courts. I argue that the different forms of knowledge and the practices advanced in the classes, at times consistent with, at times in conflict with those of the parents, reflect the demands and social responsibility …

Connections, Aynslee Elizabeth Moon Jan 2009

Connections, Aynslee Elizabeth Moon

Honors Theses

I am a painter and my thesis work talks about connecting to people through a shared experience. I spent Christmas break and spring semester as a traveling painter, putting all my brushes, paints, mediums, boards and my travel easel in my car. I sought to find the quiet, simple moments in people’s lives and put them on a surface. By sharing these simple moments with people I found a connection in painting from life that I cannot find when painting from a photograph. As I continued painting and writing I began to think about modem technology and how it has …

An Exploration Of Factors Increasing Male Involvement In Couples' Hiv Testing In Malawi, Mary Margaret Peterson Jan 2009

An Exploration Of Factors Increasing Male Involvement In Couples' Hiv Testing In Malawi, Mary Margaret Peterson

Honors Theses

Each year HIV is responsible for approximately 75,000 deaths in Malawi and for creating 550,000 (75%) of Malawi's orphans (UNdata, 2006). UNAJDS and the World Healtli Organization recommend HIV testing as an important measure in preventing transmission to future sexual partners and children. However, only 20% of Malawians aged 15 years and above had ever participated in HIV testing (Machinjili, 2006, p.l3). Heterosexual contact is the primary' mode of HIV transmission and is responsible for 90% of Malawi’s HIV infections, making couples an important target for testing (Zanera & Miteka, 2004, p.l85). In Malawi, 93% of pregnant women receive antenatal …

Perceptions Of Nursing Students Regarding Patient Suffering, Molly Marie Shivers

Honors Theses

The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the experience of nursing students in situations involving the suffering of a patient. Through analysis of interviews of senior nursing students, six themes were gathered. The themes discovered were: Student nurses in the face of suffering, desire knowledge and support from faculty: allowing time for student interaction and sharing prior to and post experience is important; Student nurses in most cases have prior experiences with suffering that color the student nurse professional view of suffering; Student nurses stay busy in the face of suffering, feel helpless and without interventions, however, …

The Bolivian Press And The Fight For A Revolution, Brandi Nicole Davis Jan 2009

The Bolivian Press And The Fight For A Revolution, Brandi Nicole Davis

Honors Theses

The role of the press and journalism as a whole can be varied. The press covers hard news such as crime and politics, and it features stories that highlight notable people and places. There are usually newspaper sections for sports, business and entertainment as well. I wanted to look at a press system that operated outside of these American norms. What would the newspaper look like? What kind of events would it cover? The 1952 Bolivian National Revolution was an instance of a revolutionary press whose purpose was not to uphold the norms of the time but to bring about …

"Reconnecting To Resilience" A Historical Study Of Slave Narratives With Implications For Social Work Practice With African American Youth From High Risk Environments, Barbara E. Milton Ii Jan 2009

"Reconnecting To Resilience" A Historical Study Of Slave Narratives With Implications For Social Work Practice With African American Youth From High Risk Environments, Barbara E. Milton Ii

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The often times high risk environment of African American youth negatively impacts their psychological well being, their family relations and community connections. Many African American youth today are experiencing the vestiges of historical trauma that took root in America in the 17th Century when the first Africans came to America. As a result of generational transmission of historical trauma, many youths today are disproportionately underachieving in education, disproportionately poor, disproportionately monitored by police and incarcerated and disproportionately disrespected by the society at large. In order to reduce the disparity of contemporary problems effecting African American youth, social scientists need to …

Planting Diverse Ethnic Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In Berlin, Germany, Berndt Dietrich Wolter Jan 2009

Planting Diverse Ethnic Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In Berlin, Germany, Berndt Dietrich Wolter

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Purpose

The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a contextualized model for an ethnic church planting process in large cities such as Berlin.

Statement of Problem

The unchurched population of foreigners in Germany stands at around seven million with 450,000 of them living in Berlin. A few existing ethnic Adventist churches in Germany have been established in the past but no strategy has been developed to reach new foreign groups. Although there are some Adventist ethnic churches in Berlin, they have not developed a coherent strategy to reach the rest of the foreigners. The German attitude toward integration of …
