Elementary School Children’S Recognition Of And Experiences With Bullying: Gender And Developmental Differences, Robyn B. Bratica Jan 2009

Elementary School Children’S Recognition Of And Experiences With Bullying: Gender And Developmental Differences, Robyn B. Bratica

Open Access Master's Theses

Previous research has indicated that boys and girls differ in the ways that they display aggression and experience victimization. This purpose of this study is to examine the ability of children, in the third and fifth grade, to correctly differentiate between various forms of aggressive acts and pro-social behavior. The results of this study indicated that though there appear to be developmental differences in the identification of aggression, there was not evidence to support gender differences. The study also provides information regarding rates of peer victimization. Specifically, groups of children who self-report higher rates of victimization are identified, as well …

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION : MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small noncoding RNAs that control gene expression by targeting mRNAs and triggering either translation repression or RNA degradation. Their aberrant expression may be involved in human diseases, including cancer. To test the hypothesis that there is a specific miRNA expression signature which characterizes male breast cancers, we performed miRNA microarray analysis in a series of male breast cancers and compared them with cases of male gynecomastia and female breast cancers. METHODS : Paraffin blocks were obtained at the Department of Pathology of Thomas Jefferson University from 28 male patients including 23 breast …

Population Structure Of The Invasive Round Goby In Lake Michigan, Elizabeth A. Larue, Carl Ruetz Iii, Ryan Thum

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

The recent establishment of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), an invasive fish in Lake Michigan, provides a model system to view fine scale evolutionary and ecological processes that can create genetic structure within a population. We used seven nuclear polymorphic microsatellite markers (N = 11-17 per site) and measurements of fish total length, weight, and sex (N = 20-74 per site) on round gobies captured by minnow traps and angling among 12 sites around the entire shore of Lake Michigan to determine if evolutionary processes are present in Lake Michigan by characterizing population structure of the round goby. Specific objectives …

From Soldadera To Adelita: The Depiction Of Women In The Mexican Revolution, Delia Fernández Jan 2009

From Soldadera To Adelita: The Depiction Of Women In The Mexican Revolution, Delia Fernández

McNair Scholars Journal

Popular images of women during the Mexican Revolution (1911-1920) often depict them as dressed provocatively, yet wearing a bandolier and gun. Although the image is common, its origin is not well known. An examination of secondary literature and media will show the transformation in the image of the female soldier (soldadera) over the course of the Revolution from that of the submissive follower into a promiscuous fighter (Adelita). The soldaderas exhibited masculine characteristics, like strength and valor, and for these attributes, men were responsible for reshaping the soldadera’s image into the ideal (docile, yet licentious) woman of the time.

Language, Culture, Perception And Knowledge, Alfredo Hernandez Corsen

McNair Scholars Journal

The complexity of our diverse communities requires us to reflect on pre-conceived notions of understanding that shape worldviews. This project examines approaches that exclude divergent perspectives, while promoting intolerant ideologies that limit our possibilities for shared learning. It also explores crucial elements that shape our understanding in an effort to expose the limitations created by absolute frames of mind. This research involves an analysis of scientific and religious fundamentalist outlooks that negate vital opportunities for discovery through mutual collaboration and the acknowledgment of exclusive and incomplete perspectives that discourage and undervalue diversity.

Use Of The Public Health Nursing Bag In The Academic Setting., Pamela M. Aaltonen, Elizabeth Richards, Kay Webster, Lynn Davis

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

The nursing bag has been a vital tool for public and community health nurses since

the early 1900s. However the practice of utilizing the nursing bag has declined. This study sought to determine if the practice of teaching students to use a public health nursing bag when making home visits should continue.

Deans and directors of all schools of nursing with baccalaureate programs listed on the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) website (n=437) were e-mailed an exploratory, descriptive self-report survey. Although 32% of responding schools continued to utilize a standard public health bag during home visits, the majority did …

The Effects Of Grazing On Deer Mice Movements Into Peridomestic Settings With Implications To Human Exposure To Sin Nombre Virus, Abigail Jean Leary Jan 2009

The Effects Of Grazing On Deer Mice Movements Into Peridomestic Settings With Implications To Human Exposure To Sin Nombre Virus, Abigail Jean Leary

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The effects of deer mouse immigration into buildings in response to horse grazing were examined during this study. Treatment (grazing) and control (no grazing) pastures were created to simulate interactions between peridomestic (in or around buildings or structures in close proximity to humans) and sylvan settings. Each pasture was 0.6 ha in size and contained two small buildings. Twelve experimental trials were conducted from April through June 2005; October through November 2005; February 2006; June through August 2007; and May through July 2008. During these trials, mouse movements into buildings were monitored using a passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag transceiver …

Measuring The Acceptance Of Internet Technology By Consumers, Donald L. Amoroso, Scott Hunsinger Jan 2009

Measuring The Acceptance Of Internet Technology By Consumers, Donald L. Amoroso, Scott Hunsinger

Faculty Articles

This research reviews studies using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to create a modified model and instrument to study the acceptance of Internet technology by consumers. We developed a modified TAM for the acceptance of Internet-based technologies by consumers. We retained the original constructs from the TAM and included additional constructs from previous literature including gender, experience, complexity, and voluntariness. We developed a survey instrument using existing scales from prior TAM instruments and modified them where appropriate. The instrument yielded respectable reliability and construct validity. The findings suggest that the modified TAM is a good predictor of consumer behavior in …

Understanding The Development Of Infant Feeding: A Spectral Analysis Approach, Pooja Vijaygopal Jan 2009

Understanding The Development Of Infant Feeding: A Spectral Analysis Approach, Pooja Vijaygopal

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Feeding problems in preterm neonates stem from complications of early delivery. Attainment of independent feeding is a prerequisite for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) discharges. Some quantitative studies of infant feeding involve excessive amounts of time for data processing. Multivariate spectral analysis was used to minimize time for investigation of variability in these rhythms. Auto and Cross-spectral parameters of the rhythms were correlated with Gestational Age (GA), Postmenstrual Age (PMA), Birthweight (BW), Days of Life (DOL), and Time Since First Nipple feeding (TSFN). Auto-spectral analysis showed 25.55% increase in Bandwidth of suck (bw-su) for a 2-week increase in GA (DOL …

Because We Have The Power To Choose: A Critical Analysis Of The Rhetorical Strategies Used In Merck's Gardasil Campaign, Brittney Lee Buttweiler

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In June of 2006, Merck gained FDA approval for Gardasil, a human papillomavirus vaccine. Shortly before, Merck also launched a large campaign to advertise the vaccine, which has continued through today. Because of the vast number of women the vaccine has the potential to affect, the product has become socially significant. Therefore, this study examines the Gardasil campaign and how it is persuasive. More specifically, this paper studies the rhetorical appeals Merck uses and explores the ethical strengths and limitations of the advertisements. The study explores how the Gardasil campaign blends elements of an informative Campaign with an advertising campaign, …

Growth And Stability Of Local Government Taxes: An Analysis Of The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’S Tax Revenue Portfolio, Nathan Phelps

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Adequate tax revenues are critical for a government to operate and maintain the delivery of services that its citizens depend. The stability of these revenues is necessary for a government to accurately forecast future revenue growth and to ensure that balanced-budget requirements are met. The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) depends upon five primary tax sources for nearly 95% of its tax revenue. These taxes comprise the city’s tax revenue portfolio and include the business net profits tax, employee withholdings tax, franchise tax, insurance premiums tax, and the property tax. Each of tax possesses unique characteristics that dictate their susceptibility …

A Participant Model: Predictive Medical And Behavioral Factors Of Prostate Cancer Screening Attendees At Markey, Shana L. Steinbach Jan 2009

A Participant Model: Predictive Medical And Behavioral Factors Of Prostate Cancer Screening Attendees At Markey, Shana L. Steinbach

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Problem Statement

The Prostate Cancer Screening Program at the Markey Cancer Center co-sponsors prostate cancer screenings with the Prostate Cancer Education Council. All participation, including African-American attendance, has decreased 38% from years 2006 to 2008 and program managers are seeking insight to improve program participation by acquiring knowledge of behavioral and medical characteristics that may influence screening attendance. Because of the higher incidence of prostate cancer in African-American men (ACS, 2008), a specific program goal is also to increase screening attendance for this minority population.

Research Strategy

Questions that assess participant behavior, personal, and family medical history are analyzed to …
