The Claremont Foodshed: A Historical Analysis, Allie Comet Jan 2009

The Claremont Foodshed: A Historical Analysis, Allie Comet

Pomona Senior Theses

On the southeast corner of the Pomona College campus a small community farm and lush oasis is nestled in the suburban jungle of Claremont, California. ‘The Farm’ is a two-acre food forest that produces a wide variety of annual vegetable crops, fruits, and perennial herbs and berries in a landscape otherwise covered largely in asphalt and lawn. From my experiences on the Farm and in the classroom studying environmental analysis , I have developed a great interest in sustainable food and farming. The failures of the modern food system, destructive to the natural environment and inadequate in providing the world’s population …

Pervasive Hitchhiking At Coding And Regulatory Sites In Humans, James J. Cai, J. Michael Macpherson, Guy Sella, Dmitri A. Petrov Jan 2009

Pervasive Hitchhiking At Coding And Regulatory Sites In Humans, James J. Cai, J. Michael Macpherson, Guy Sella, Dmitri A. Petrov

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Much effort and interest have focused on assessing the importance of natural selection, particularly positive natural selection, in shaping the human genome. Although scans for positive selection have identified candidate loci that may be associated with positive selection in humans, such scans do not indicate whether adaptation is frequent in general in humans. Studies based on the reasoning of the MacDonald–Kreitman test, which, in principle, can be used to evaluate the extent of positive selection, suggested that adaptation is detectable in the human genome but that it is less common than in Drosophila or Escherichia coli. Both positive and purifying …

Atmospheric Soluble Dust Records From A Tibetan Ice Core: Possible Climate Proxies And Teleconnection With The Pacific Decadal Oscillation, B. Grigholm, P. A. Mayewski, S. Kang, Y. Zhang, Susan Kaspari, S. B. Sneed, Q. Zhang

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

In autumn 2005, a joint expedition between the University of Maine and the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research recovered three ice cores from Guoqu Glacier (33°34′37.8″N, 91°10′35.3″E, 5720 m above sea level) on the northern side of Mt. Geladaindong, central Tibetan Plateau. Isotopes (δ18O), major soluble ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, NO3−, SO42−), and radionuclide (β‐activity) measurements from one of the cores revealed a 70‐year record (1935–2005). Statistical analysis of major ion time series suggests that atmospheric soluble …

The Development Of An At-Home Speech Therapy Program For Adults With Difficulties In Memory, Recall, And Comprehension Due To Traumatic Brain Injury, Katherine H. Myers

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study was to develop an at-home therapy program for Adults with difficulties in memory, recall, and comprehension due to traumatic brain injury. Research was conducted via observations on real clients during the fall semester of 2008 to get an idea of the deficits the clients had to inform the development of a therapy tool. Research was conducted on how well clients take what they've learned in the actual therapy session and apply it to their lives outside of the sessions. The tool developed was used in a small sample of clients and clinician/supervisor feedback indicated that …

Integrating Informational Texts In Primary Grades, Danielle Hach Jan 2009

Integrating Informational Texts In Primary Grades, Danielle Hach

Honors Capstones

A topic of debate that has been circulated around the education world for some time now is the issue of nonfiction literature. Research has shown that there is a scarcity of nonfiction in primary grade curriculum. There is ongoing discussion about the benefits of informational text. In my capstone project I am going to review the literature on the benefits and feasibility of using informational text in integrated primary instruction. In addition, I will use my findings to develop an integrated unit on wolves. I will produce lessons for this unit that include informational text and reflect effective instructional practice.

Looking Into The Energy Future Of Developing Nations (A Case For Nuclear Technology), Sebastine Nwaiwu Jan 2009

Looking Into The Energy Future Of Developing Nations (A Case For Nuclear Technology), Sebastine Nwaiwu

Honors Capstones

The energy poverty being witnessed in many developing countries and the fear of a deteriorating environment are some of the factors driving the nuclear renaissance. Over the years, global energy demand has continued to increase without matching supply, giving signs of impending energy crises. The argument for nuclear technology seems to sound more convincing in the face of these problems. After more than two decades following the accidents of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, the fear of global warming allegedly coming from fossil fuel seems to be trumping the fear and apprehension associated with radiation. With the rise in trade …

Modernism, Philip M. Weinstein Jan 2009

Modernism, Philip M. Weinstein

English Literature Faculty Works

This article examines the impact of modernism on philosophy and literature. It proposes two defining dimensions of modernist texts: their initial difficulty and their experimental departure from earlier conventions of thinking. It considers in some detail the practice of novelists Marcel Proust, Franz Kafka, and William Faulkner with the aim of shedding light on central strategies and powers of modernism. It shows that the formal practices of my novelists enact a philosophic stance through their particular way of deploying materials.

Localization Of Deformed Wing Virus (Dwv) In The Brains Of Apis Mellifera (European Honey Bees), Karan Samir Shah Jan 2009

Localization Of Deformed Wing Virus (Dwv) In The Brains Of Apis Mellifera (European Honey Bees), Karan Samir Shah

Honors Theses

The purpose of the current research project is to design a successful in-situ hybridization to identify regions within the brains of honeybees where DWV replicates. The localization of the virus in the brains of the bees can draw a connection between CCDand DWV.In conclusion, these results demonstrate that in bees infected with DWV the virus replicates actively in very important regions of the brain, including neuropils that are responsible for vision and olfaction. This means that the virus could adversely affect the vision and olfaction of the honeybees making it difficult for bees to behave normally.

Pirating The Runway: The Potential Impact Of The Design Piracy Prohibition Act On Fashion Retail, H. Shayne Adler Jan 2009

Pirating The Runway: The Potential Impact Of The Design Piracy Prohibition Act On Fashion Retail, H. Shayne Adler

UC Law Business Journal

Historically, the fashion industry has followed a clear trickle-down business model, relying on the free flow of creative ideas from high fashion and couture houses to more affordable, mass-produced clothing lines that interpret these concepts. However, recent technological developments have altered the structure and modus operandi of this multi-billion dollar sector of the economy, resulting in a rise in production imitation and knockoff items. This Note analyzes the effects of such a shift in the industry paradigm, both positive and negative, for both designers and consumers. In addition, this Note examines the potential impact of the proposed legislation known as …

The Political-Economic Origins Of Reali-Tv, Chad Raphael Jan 2009

The Political-Economic Origins Of Reali-Tv, Chad Raphael

Communication

From the sea change in American television in the 1980s emerged a programming trend variously described as “infotainment,” “reality-based television,” “tabloid TV,” “crime-time television,” “trash TV,” and “on-scene shows.” The welter of terms created by television critics to describe these new programs masked their underlying connection as a response to economic restructuring within the industry. In this essay I offer a rough categorization of these programs, sketch the industrial context from which they emerged, and point to the economic problems they were meant to solve. I focus mostly on the distinctive conditions of prime-time series, putting aside made-for-TV docudramas and …

Looking Beyond Universal Primary Education: Gender Differences In Time Use Among Children In Rural Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, S. Chandrasekhar Jan 2009

Looking Beyond Universal Primary Education: Gender Differences In Time Use Among Children In Rural Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, S. Chandrasekhar

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper addresses gender equity in parents’ educational investments in children in a context of rising school attendance in rural Bangladesh. Using data from the nationally representative 2005 Bangladesh Adolescent Survey, we analyze correlates of time spent in school, studying outside school, and work, using a data set on time-use patterns of schoolgoing children and adolescents. We find that time spent in work varies inversely with the amount of time spent studying at home, while time at school shows no such association. We find support for two hypotheses regarding household influences on education: that time spent in school is insensitive …

The Role Of Abortion In The Last Stage Of Fertility Decline In Vietnam, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, Sajeda Amin Jan 2009

The Role Of Abortion In The Last Stage Of Fertility Decline In Vietnam, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, Sajeda Amin

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Vietnam’s rapid fertility decline can be explained by very high rates of contraceptive use and induced abortion, but despite the overall decline, fertility rates vary considerably across the country’s 54 ethnic groups. To explore the prospects for further fertility decline through use of abortion among high-fertility minority populations, this study analyzes unique data from the Vietnam National Health Survey to examine ethnic differentials in prevalence and determinants of abortion and contraception, using a new classification system for ethnicity. The report concludes that providing improved abortion services alone is unlikely to reduce fertility among high-fertility minority groups. Service provision needs to …
