The Role Of Information And Communication Technologies In Managing Transition And Sustaining Women's Health During Their Midlife Years, Julie Dare Jan 2009

The Role Of Information And Communication Technologies In Managing Transition And Sustaining Women's Health During Their Midlife Years, Julie Dare

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research has been motivated primarily by a desire to extend and enrich existing research on women’s uses of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to manage relationships, and access and construct social support during their transitional midlife years. In doing so, this research addresses a gap in the literature on women’s consumption of such technologies. Since the late 1980s, when several landmark studies investigated women’s use of the telephone, there has been little systematic evaluation of the degree to which newer communication technologies have become integrated into women’s communication practices.

Another key feature of this research is an examination of …

Examining Novice Teacher Development Through The Clinical Supervision Process: A Participatory Action Research, Chad Daloia Jan 2009

Examining Novice Teacher Development Through The Clinical Supervision Process: A Participatory Action Research, Chad Daloia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first clinical supervision experience can significantly impact a novice teacher's overall success during the early years of their teaching career (Robinson, 1998). It is a very stressful, challenging time, and for many, it is the first time he/she is asked to take on multiple roles aside from direct instruction and professional responsibilities (Sykes, 1996). As districts work to better align policies and induction programs with the changing needs of novice teachers, they must face the fact that they serve powerful roles as teacher educators, mentors, and retainers. It is important for administrators to self-assess how districts are meeting or …

A Case Study Of The State University, Extension, And The College Of Agriculture As They Explore And Implement A Metro Research And Outreach Initiative, Deno Deciantis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The national Cooperative Extension and Land Grant University Systems have been struggling with their future direction due to the question of relevance related to urban and metropolitan citizens for a great number of years. This system is quite traditional in that it follows the customary rural, production agriculture focus with an overwhelming percentage of its resources aimed at those efforts. At the State University, like most other traditional land grant institutions, there has been an inner systemic struggle regarding programming to urban areas. This institution was able to establish a metro initiative in one of the state's major cities. Its …

Post Adoption Contact With Birth Parents In Foster Care Adoptions, Michelle Eileen Roberts Jan 2009

Post Adoption Contact With Birth Parents In Foster Care Adoptions, Michelle Eileen Roberts

Masters Theses

In private adoptions in the United States, a general trend towards more openness and contact post-adoption has been documented in the research over the last 20 years. In contrast, there has been very little research on openness in foster care adoptions. This study sought to begin to fill this void in the research by examining the level of openness in foster care adoptions and exploring how agencies facilitate and support openness in adoptions. A 20-question survey was administered to adoptive parents over the internet, covering the level of openness in their adoption, their satisfaction with the level of contact and …

Returns To Education In Rural America, Dilyara Jepbarova Jan 2009

Returns To Education In Rural America, Dilyara Jepbarova

Masters Theses

Rural areas are less developed than urban. It is well known that rural workers are more likely to suffer from the lower wages than their counterparts from metro areas. Policymakers wrestle with the issue of "brain drain" in rural areas and, therefore, a loss of tax income in rural counties. "Brain drain" happens when professionals leave rural counties for metropolitans to earn higher returns to education. This thesis will shed light on some sides of rural development connected with the returns to education.

The main goal of this research is to estimate and compare wages and returns to education in …

Reexamining Depressive Realism Using Estimates Of Real Life Events, Lindsay Babcock Jan 2009

Reexamining Depressive Realism Using Estimates Of Real Life Events, Lindsay Babcock

Masters Theses

Early reports of the phenomenon known as depressive realism suggest the counter-intuitive notion that depressed people are more accurate in their perception of reality. These studies have been criticized for relying solely on judging control over laboratory tasks that do not relate to real life and for the use of deception. The present study investigates the relationship between depression, anxiety, locus of control, and accuracy of judgments with an emphasis on real world occurrences, as well as examining individuals' confidence in their judgments. While depression, anxiety, and locus of control were all found to be highly correlated, significant results were …

Conditional Reasoning In Depression, Niyati Sheth Jan 2009

Conditional Reasoning In Depression, Niyati Sheth

Masters Theses

Most of the studies on reasoning have suggested that individuals with depression show poor performance on reasoning tasks (Channon & Baker, 1994). Previous researches and major theories attempt to explain the association between errors in reasoning process and working memory limitations (Braine, 1994; Gilhooly et. al., 1993; Johnson-Laird, 1983). Research also shows that working memory is impaired in individuals with depression (Channon, Baker & Robertson, 1993; Christopher & MacDonald, 2005). Hence, as per this view, depressed individuals perfonn poorly on reasoning tasks because of working memory limitation or preload rather than their ability to manipulate relevant infonnation (Channon & Baker, …

The Worth Of A Comfortable Shoe, Kristina Mellinger Jan 2009

The Worth Of A Comfortable Shoe, Kristina Mellinger

Honors Theses

The topic that I have chosen allows me to research not only the health concerns for wearing high heels (which was my original intent), but also the psychological, cultural, and historical aspects of wearing high heels and even shoes in general. This has allowed me to have endless possibilities during my research. I have learned many interesting facts about the history of shoes, and I find myself reading into the wee hours of the night just to learn more. My interest in this topic is derived from my own experience of wearing uncomfortably high heels. When I wear these ridiculous …
