Environmental Politics In Paradise: Resistance To The Selling Of Vieques, Sherrie Baver

The most notable instance of a massive and successful social protest in Puerto Rico in recent years has been on the island of Vieques between 1999 and 2003. This was a rare case in which Puerto Ricans were able to overcome their partisan divisions to end the U.S. Navy's 60 years of training on this small, 51- square-mile island off the main island's east coast. Part of the reason for the Vieques victory, including gaining support from some influential U.S. politicians, was that leaders framed the protest in terms of human rights, public health and environmental degradation rather than Yanqui …

This thesis establishes an intelligent cold supply chain management system which consists of two parts: one is the intelligent tracking system integrated with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Global Positioning System (GPS), and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN); the other is the cold supply chain model. This tracking system is mainly designed to monitor the food products during the transport, including two parts, a data terminal and a data server. The data terminal is installed inside a container, comprised of GPS, Bluetooth, industrial computer, WSN, RFID reader, RFID antenna, and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) modem. Study I examined the effects of aging and reactive oxygen species on flow-mediated vasodilation in coronary arterioles. Isolated coronary arterioles of young (4 mo) and aged (24 mo) male Fisher 344 rats were subjected to stepwise increases in flow (0–50 nL/sec) in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic Tempol (100 µM), hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2) scavenger catalase (100 U/mL), Tempol + catalase, or Tempol + deferoxamine (100 µM), an iron chelator and inhibitor of hydroxyl radical formation. Flow-induced nitric oxide (NO) and H2O 2 production decline with age, as measured by diaminofluorescein (DAF) and dichlorodihydrofluorescein (DCF) fluorescence, …
