Literary Bodies: The Novel As Experience, Britt Dienes Sep 2009

Literary Bodies: The Novel As Experience, Britt Dienes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For my MA thesis I propose to examine a series of novels that combine motifs of the body with structural and linguistic experimentation that parallels the state of the bodies within the text. Using Tsitsi Dangarembga's 1988 "bodybildungsroman" Nervous Conditions, Sherley Anne Williams' 1986 neo -slave narrative Dessa Rose, Samuel Beckett's 1938 existential novel Murphy, Vikram Seth's 1986 poetic novel Golden Gate, and Vladimir Nabokov's 1962 poetic novel Pale Fire, I will argue that these texts portray the body as a readable space of culture, a legible site of conflict or creation.

I contend that these novels …

Divergence In Seasonal Hydrology Across Northern Eurasia: Emerging Trends And Water Cycle Linkages, Michael A. Rawlins, H. Ye, D. Yang, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Kyle C. Mcdonald

Faculty Publications

Discharge from large Eurasia rivers increased during the 20th century, yet much remains unknown regarding details of this increasing freshwater flux. Here, for the three largest Eurasian basins (the Ob, Yenisei, and Lena) we examine the nature of annual and seasonal discharge trends by investigating the flow changes along with those for precipitation, snow depth, and snow water equivalent. On the basis of a multiperiod trend analysis and examination of station data, we propose two characteristic regimes to explain the long‐term discharge increase from these large Eurasian rivers. Over the early decades from approximately 1936 to 1965, annual precipitation correlates …

Equity Analysis Of Portland’S Draft Bicycle Master Plan – Findings, Jennifer Dill, Brendon Haggerty Sep 2009

Equity Analysis Of Portland’S Draft Bicycle Master Plan – Findings, Jennifer Dill, Brendon Haggerty

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Portland's current bicycle network has brought the city into the national spotlight as a leader in the provision of cycling infrastructure. As the city looks forward to 2030 with ambitions of becoming a truly world-class bicycling city, it is clear that if the Draft Plan is fully implemented, nearly all of the city will be covered by a dense network of bikeways. The question of equity in the future is therefore not so much one of network coverage or lack of coverage, but of project priority and timing of implementation. The current network, while outstanding relative to other cities, nevertheless …

Togo: Irrigation Research, Michael Doenges, Sally Homsy, Marie-Claire Tuzeneu

ETHOS Technical Reports

A team of UD students conducted in-depth research concerning the construction of an irrigation system in a small village in central Togo (Sotouboua). The results of this research illustrated that a drip irrigation system would be the most appropriate and feasible choice considering the conditions of the fields and the village itself. Upon arrival in Togo, however, it became evident that there were many more pressing issues that needed to be addressed before an irrigation system could be built. A report was compiled to ensure that future ETHOS students placed in Togo will have the necessary information to prepare for …

Use Of The Chambira Palm (Astrocaryum Chambira) In Rainforest Communities Of The Peruvian Amazon, Anel Guel, Jim Penn Sep 2009

Use Of The Chambira Palm (Astrocaryum Chambira) In Rainforest Communities Of The Peruvian Amazon, Anel Guel, Jim Penn

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

We proposed to research the use of chambira palm fibers and the sale of chambira crafts in four communities located about 100 miles from the city of Iquitos, Peru. In this part of the Peruvian Amazon, women are organized into groups that work to obtain the fibers and sell their products in a sustainable way, and at the same time promote the cultivation of the palm trees in their family gardens. As is the case with so many products from tropical forests, there is great geographic variation in the abundance of the resource (chambira) and variation in the amount of …

Cultural Diversity And Economic Performance: Evidence From European Regions, Giovanni Prarolo, Elena Bellini, Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano, Dino Pinelli Sep 2009

Cultural Diversity And Economic Performance: Evidence From European Regions, Giovanni Prarolo, Elena Bellini, Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano, Dino Pinelli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We investigate the relationship between diversity and productivity in Europe using an original dataset covering the NUTS 3 regions of 12 countries of the EU15 (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, former Western Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom). In so doing, we follow the empirical methodology developed by Ottaviano and Peri (2006a) in the case of US cities. The main idea is that, as cultural diversity may affect both production and consumption through positive or negative externalities, the joint estimation of price and income equations is needed to identify the dominant effect. Based on this …

Self-Enforcing Agreements On Water Allocation, Erik Ansink Sep 2009

Self-Enforcing Agreements On Water Allocation, Erik Ansink

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Many water allocation agreements in transboundary river basins are inherently unstable. Due to stochastic river flow, agreements may be broken in case of drought. The objective of this paper is to analyse whether water allocation agreements can be self-enforcing. An agreement is modelled as the outcome of bargaining game on river water allocation. Given this agreement, the bargaining game is followed by a repeated extensive-form game in which countries decide whether or not to comply with the agreement. I assess under what conditions such agreements are self-enforcing, given stochastic river flow. The results show that, for sufficiently low discounting, every …

Mapping The Evolution Of "Clusters": A Meta-Analysis, Mario A. Maggioni, Francesca Gambarotto, T. Erika Uberti Sep 2009

Mapping The Evolution Of "Clusters": A Meta-Analysis, Mario A. Maggioni, Francesca Gambarotto, T. Erika Uberti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper presents a meta-analysis of the “cluster literature” contained in scientific journals from 1969 to 2007. Thanks to an original database we study the evolution of a stream of literature which focuses on a research object which is both a theoretical puzzle and an empirical widespread evidence. We identify different growth stages, from take-off to development and maturity. We test the existence of a life-cycle within the authorships and we discover the existence of a substitutability relation between different collaborative behaviours. We study the relationships between a “spatial” and an “industrial” approach within the textual corpus of cluster literature …

Environmental Policy, Spatial Spillovers And The Emergence Of Economic Agglomerations, Anastasios Xepapadeas, Efthymia Kyriakopoulou Sep 2009

Environmental Policy, Spatial Spillovers And The Emergence Of Economic Agglomerations, Anastasios Xepapadeas, Efthymia Kyriakopoulou

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We explain the spatial concentration of economic activity, in a model of economic geography, when the cost of environmental policy - which is increasing in the concentration of emissions - and an immobile production factor act as centrifugal forces, while positive knowledge spillovers and iceberg transportation costs act as centripetal forces. We study the agglomeration effects caused by trade-offs between centripetal and centrifugal forces. The above effects govern firms’ location decisions and as a result, they define the distribution of economic activity across space. We derive the rational expectations equilibrium and the social optimum, compare the outcomes and characterize the …

Cultural Identity And Knowledge Creation In Cosmopolitan Cities, Gianmarco Ottaviano, Giovanni Prarolo Sep 2009

Cultural Identity And Knowledge Creation In Cosmopolitan Cities, Gianmarco Ottaviano, Giovanni Prarolo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study how the city system is affected by the possibility for the members of the same cultural diaspora to interact across different cities. In so doing, we propose a simple two- city model with two mobile cultural groups. A localized externality fosters the productivity of individuals when groups interact in a city. At the same time, such interaction dilutes cultural identities and reduces the consumption of culture-specific goods and services. We show that the two groups segregate in different cities when diaspora members find it hard to communicate at distance whereas they integrate in multicultural cities when communication is …
