Identification And Comparison Of Gray Literature In Two Polar Libraries: Australian Antarctic Division And Scott Polar Research Institute, Daria O. Carle Sep 2009

Identification And Comparison Of Gray Literature In Two Polar Libraries: Australian Antarctic Division And Scott Polar Research Institute, Daria O. Carle

Reports

Gray literature collections were investigated and compared at the libraries of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) in order to improve accessibility. These collections are important to Arctic and Antarctic researchers, but are problematic because they are not well documented, often have limited access, and are arranged by subject using a classification system specific to polar libraries. Tangible results of the project include estimates of the number of gray literature items in the polar subject categories for the two libraries, along with a template of a user’s finding aid to these collections. In addition, …

The Otto Aufranc Award Identification Of A 4 Mb Region On Chromosome 17q21 Linked To Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip In One 18-Member, Multigeneration Family, George Feldman, Chelsea Dalsey, Kasia Fertala, David Azimi, Paolo Fortina, Marcella Devoto, Maurizio Pacifici, Javad Parvizi

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a disabling condition of the hip that, depending on geography, can afflict between 20-80% of patients with end-stage arthritis of the hip. Despite its prevalence, the etiology of this disease remains unknown. DDH is a complex disorder with both environmental and genetic causes.. Based on the literature, the candidate genes for the disease are HOXB9, collagen type I α1, and DLX 3. The purpose of our study was to map and characterize the gene or genes responsible for this disorder by family linkage analysis. We recruited one 18-member, multigeneration affected family to provide …

Modeling The Influence Of Water Waves Upon Remote Sensing Imagery: The Underwater Radiance Distribution And Shape Factors, Charles R. Bostater, Luce Bassetti, Lisa H. Huddleston

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper describes the results of modeling the water wave surface and underwater light field as influenced by water waves using a Monte Carlo model (MCHSIM). Model and sensor data related to water column properties and benthic properties that influence the light upwelled from below the water - as observed from a sensor looking from below or above the water surface is presented. Synthetic image results using Monte Carlo techniques show the influence of water waves upon subsurface shape factors and these factors can be used in shallow water remote sensing algorithms that are based on underlying analytical models. The …

Causality In Political Networks, James H. Fowler, Michael T. Heaney, David W. Nickerson, John F. Padgett, Betsy Sinclair Sep 2009

Causality In Political Networks, James H. Fowler, Michael T. Heaney, David W. Nickerson, John F. Padgett, Betsy Sinclair

Working Papers

As the study of political networks becomes more common in political science, greater attention to questions of causality is warranted. This essay explores competing visions of causality in political networks. Independent essays address issues of statistical model specification, identification of multi-step personal influence, measurement error, causality in historical perspective, and the insights of field experiments. These essays do not agree entirely on the nature of causality in political networks, though they commonly take seriously concerns regarding homophily, time- consistency, and the uniqueness of political network data. Serious consideration of these methodological issues promises to enhance the value-added of network analysis …

Proyecto Desarrollo: Café Saludable [9th-11th Grade], Susanna Pierce

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

The United Nations Development Program seeks to eliminate poverty by promoting economic growth among underdeveloped and developing nations. Professionals within the organization strive to improve education, health standards, and infrastructure of these nations in order to boost standards of living. Because the majority of Latin America consists of developing nations, equipping the next generation with the basic Spanish language skills and economic knowledge to address the issues of our world’s poorest nations is imperative. Through collaborative efforts, we can address the Millennium Development Goals of alleviating the disease and poverty that pervade these countries. In this interdisciplinary unit, students will …

Why Government?...Why Our Government? [12th Grade], Samuel Dejohn

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This unit was constructed as an introduction to 12th grade US Government. It is an attempt to provide enduring understandings of the United States Constitution and how it compares with other forms of government. There are many options of governing systems, but through an evolutionary process, the United States Constitution contains sound principles which allowed a republic endure through regional infighting, civil unrest, and infinite political reforms. The unit begins with taxonomy of various governing systems and ideas. After the classification process, students will look at how regional politics play into nation building. While reflecting on the Constitutional Convention and …

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

In this unit, students will be doing a chapter book study using the novel, Sarah Plain and Tall. At the end of the unit, the students will deeply understand that there are always things to miss no matter where you are, a sense of belonging happens when someone accepts where they are, and that we carry symbols and artifacts that represent the people and places that matter the most to us. Students will be engaged using the 6 Reading Comprehension Strategies: Phonics/Decoding, Predict/Infer, Monitor/Clarify, Question, Summarize, Evaluate. Other skills such as analytical thinking, predicting outcomes and connecting text to self …

Precision Navigation Using Pre-Georegistered Map Data, Frederick C. Webber Sep 2009

Precision Navigation Using Pre-Georegistered Map Data, Frederick C. Webber

Theses and Dissertations

Navigation performance in small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is adversely affected by limitations in current sensor technology for small, lightweight sensors. Because most UAVs are equipped with cameras for mission-related purposes, it is advantageous to utilize the camera to improve the navigation solution. This research improves navigation by matching camera images to a priori georegistered image data and combining this update with existing image-aided navigation technology. The georegistration matching is done by projecting the images into the same plane, extracting features using the techniques Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) [5] and Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF) [3]. The features are matched …

Analysis Of Simulated And Actual Airborne Remote Sensing Imagery For Characterization Of Surface Water Wave Effects, Charles R. Bostater, Heather Frystacky, Mate Nemes, Luce Bassetti Sep 2009

Analysis Of Simulated And Actual Airborne Remote Sensing Imagery For Characterization Of Surface Water Wave Effects, Charles R. Bostater, Heather Frystacky, Mate Nemes, Luce Bassetti

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Simulated and airborne imagery demonstrate the ability to see manmade and natural objects below the water wave surface. Traditional photogrammetric imagery and airborne digital imagery both suffer from a loss in image clarity due to a number of factors, including the forward motion of the airborne platform. Blurring due to this effect can be calculated and an opto-mechanical system has been designed in order to help remove this effect. Forward motion blur can be shown to occur on the order of a several centimeters and calculation results are presented. The system is described and imagery is shown to demonstrate image …
