The Many Ways Between Late Bronze Age Aegeans And Levants, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld Jan 2009

The Many Ways Between Late Bronze Age Aegeans And Levants, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Interactions between the "Aegean" and "Levant" cannot be discussed in monolithic terms. The physical realities of sea travel, the vocabulary and accounts preserved in texts, and the objects found in foreign earth and under the seas point to many routes among the diverse communities that inhabited the eastern Mediterranean littoral in the Late Bronze Age, and give hints of the different peoples forging the connections. They interacted in a multiplicity of ways, their relationships shifting through time. Focusing in on the specifics of interactions reveals complexities that should be the basis for alternative ways of classifying interactions across the Aegean …

Advocacy Groups In The Wake Of Hurricane Katrina: Who Shapes Coverage Of Wetlands Loss, Paul Harang Jan 2009

Advocacy Groups In The Wake Of Hurricane Katrina: Who Shapes Coverage Of Wetlands Loss, Paul Harang

LSU Master's Theses

Louisiana’s coastal wetlands provide a habitat for diverse wildlife, recreational opportunities for Louisiana residents and tourists, and an important natural buffer between communities and powerful hurricanes. Because they are disappearing at a rapid rate, coastal wetlands issues have been prominent in south Louisiana for decades. The catastrophic hurricanes of 2005 and 2008 have given the discussion an increased sense of urgency. Through this paper, I explore coverage of wetlands loss in local south Louisiana daily newspapers. Specifically, I try to determine how these papers frame the issue and illuminate how sources present in these stories participate in the construction of …

Optimal Defaults And Active Decisions, Gabriel D. Carroll, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian, Andrew Metrick

Faculty Publications

Defaults often have a large influence on consumer decisions. We identify an overlooked but practical alternative to defaults: requiring individuals to make an explicit choice for themselves. We study such “active decisions” in the context of 401(k) saving. We and that compelling new hires to make active decisions about 401(k) enrollment raises the initial fraction that enroll by 28 percentage points relative to a standard opt-in enrollment procedure, producing a savings distribution three months after hire that would take 30 months to achieve under standard enrollment. We also present a model of 401(k) enrollment and derive conditions under which the …

Jurisdiction's Noble Lie, Frederic M. Bloom Jan 2009

Jurisdiction's Noble Lie, Frederic M. Bloom

Publications

This Article makes sense of a lie. It shows how legal jurisdiction depends on a falsehood--and then explains why it would.

To make this novel argument, this Article starts where jurisdiction does. It recounts jurisdiction's foundations--its tests and motives, its histories and rules. It then seeks out jurisdictional reality, critically examining a side of jurisdiction we too often overlook. Legal jurisdiction may portray itself as fixed and unyielding, as natural as the force of gravity, and as stable as the firmest ground. But jurisdiction is in fact something different. It is a malleable legal invention that bears a false rigid …

Constitutional Displacement, Timothy Zick Jan 2009

Constitutional Displacement, Timothy Zick

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the intersection between territory and constitutional liberty. Territoriality, as defined by Robert Sack, is the attempt to affect, influence, or control people, phenomena, and relationships by delimiting and asserting control over a geographic area. Territoriality affects constitutional liberty in profound ways. These effects have been apparent in certain infamous historical episodes, including the territoriality of racial segregation, the geographic exclusion and internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, early state migratory exclusions, and isolation of the sick and mentally ill. Today, governments are resorting to territorial restrictions in an increasing number of circumstances, including detention of enemy …

Levels Of Homophobia Among Students Attending A Comprehensive Midwestern University, Amy J. Baumgart Jan 2009

Levels Of Homophobia Among Students Attending A Comprehensive Midwestern University, Amy J. Baumgart

Masters Theses

This study looks at past research completed on the topic of homosexuality in the United States, including the history of acceptance of homosexual individuals and perceptions of homosexuality in the perspectives ofreligion, gender, and the law. In addition, the research looks at how the college experience tends to liberalize students. Putting these two ideas together, the study uses the Homosexual Attitude Scale and other demographic information gathering questions to determine the factors that contribute most prominently to homophobia in college students. The sample of students being studied are all undergraduates attending a public, Midwestern, comprehensive university. As a general overview, …

Defining Success With Big Ideas: A New Teacher’S Growth And Challenges, Meg Sampson Jan 2009

Defining Success With Big Ideas: A New Teacher’S Growth And Challenges, Meg Sampson

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This article is a compellation of my work with big ideas and my findings based on that work for the second semester of the 2006-2007 school year. I worked with three 11th grade students that have in the past struggled to pass the Global Studies Regents exam. The class was created as a RCT (Regents Competency Test) preparation course. The purpose of this class, as it was told to me in January, was to give these students the skills and motivation they needed to pass the Global Studies RCT in June. I encountered many obstacles along the way, attendance issues, …

The Evolution Of A Big Idea: Why Don’T We Know Anything About Africa?, Michael James Meyer Jan 2009

The Evolution Of A Big Idea: Why Don’T We Know Anything About Africa?, Michael James Meyer

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This article is about my experiences as a ninth grade history teacher trying to implement a “big idea” unit on ancient African history. My experiences as a first year teacher and also my experience in seeing this unit develop over three years are chronicled. I conclude that implementing a big idea strategy of instruction is possible in a “real” classroom, that this implementation is more of a journey than a destination, and that big ideas do help students to learn.

Local Employment, Poverty, And Property Value Effects Of Geographically-Targeted Tax Incentives: An Instrumental Variables Approach, Andrew R. Hanson Jan 2009

Local Employment, Poverty, And Property Value Effects Of Geographically-Targeted Tax Incentives: An Instrumental Variables Approach, Andrew R. Hanson

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The federal Empowerment Zone (EZ) program is a set of tax incentives targeted to areas of select cities. I estimate the effect of the EZ program on employment, poverty, and property values by comparing areas that received an EZ to areas that applied (and qualified), but were rejected. Because of endogeneity concerns, I use political representation to instrument for EZ designation. OLS results show a positive and statistically significant effect of the program on employment and poverty. IV estimates suggest the program had no effect on employment and poverty, and instead had a large statistically significant effect on property values.

Understanding The Antecedents And Consequences Of Sales And Use Tax Policy: Evidence From Three Studies, Amy Hageman Jan 2009

Understanding The Antecedents And Consequences Of Sales And Use Tax Policy: Evidence From Three Studies, Amy Hageman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three separate but interrelated studies examining the antecedents and consequences of sales and use tax (SUT) policy. The first study investigates whether elements of the SUT system influence elements of economic development, and tests whether SUT rates and/or bases influence state-aggregated levels of capital expenditures and employment within the manufacturing sector from 1983-2006. Results indicate that elements of the tax base (i.e., SUT exemptions) affect these indicators of economic development, but the same relationship was not seen for SUT rates. The second study examines individual taxpayer compliance across different tax settings (i.e., the state use tax …

Terroir Vs. Trademarks: The Debate Over Geographical Indications And Expansions To The Trips Agreement, Emily C. Creditt Jan 2009

Terroir Vs. Trademarks: The Debate Over Geographical Indications And Expansions To The Trips Agreement, Emily C. Creditt

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The ever expanding global marketplace and increasing sophistication of consumers has led to a heightened desire for high-quality wines, spirits and food products that derive their unique characteristics from the geographical region from which they originate. The particular geographic identity of a product, known as a "geographical indication" can increase the marketability and value of any number of consumer goods, from wines and spirits to rice and cheese. The desire to protect geographical indications from misappropriation and abuse eventually led to the adoption of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects for Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Agreement) during the establishment of the …

Uneasy Lies The Head That Wears The Crown: Why Content's Kingdom Is Slipping Away, Jonathan Handel Jan 2009

Uneasy Lies The Head That Wears The Crown: Why Content's Kingdom Is Slipping Away, Jonathan Handel

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article examines the ongoing power struggle between the content industries (with a particular focus on Hollywood) and the technology industry. These two sectors are intertwined like never before, yet their fates seem wildly divergent, with content stumbling while distribution technology thrives.

The Article begins by illustrating that, even before the recession took hold, traditional paid content was in trouble, and that this was and is true across a range of distribution platforms and content types, including theatrical motion pictures, home video, network television, music, newspapers, books, and magazines. The Article next posits six reasons for content's discontent: supply and …

Charting A Sustainable Development Path: Prospects For Socially And Environmentally Beneficial Tourism In Caleta Tortel, Chile, Laura Becerra Jan 2009

Charting A Sustainable Development Path: Prospects For Socially And Environmentally Beneficial Tourism In Caleta Tortel, Chile, Laura Becerra

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Caleta Tortel is a small rural town in Patagonia, Chile. Caleta Tortel is at a crossroads in economic development. The main goals of this thesis were to analyze Tortel's past and future development, evaluate the possibility of a socially and environmentally beneficial path for its future, and assess the community’s ability to shape this future path. I focused on Tortel's budding tourism development and evaluated its ability to follow and support a socially and environmentally beneficial development path.

I developed an analytic framework of two contrasting development paths: 1) extractive and exploitative, and 2) socially and environmentally beneficial (sustain able). …

Landscape And The Feminine Voice: Reclaiming Identity In The Works Of Maryse Conde, Simone Schwarz-Bart And Andre Schwarz Bart, Kathleen Marie Ruth Jan 2009

Landscape And The Feminine Voice: Reclaiming Identity In The Works Of Maryse Conde, Simone Schwarz-Bart And Andre Schwarz Bart, Kathleen Marie Ruth

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis examines Caribbean literature and its value in establishing identity for Caribbean peoples. The discourse of Caribbean literature as a tool for re-establishing or reclaiming identity is examined, as well as the domination of the male voice throughout Caribbean literature and theory. Through examination of the intimate connection between the feminine and the landscape of the Caribbean, the presence and significance of the female voice is established in the works of Andre Schwarz-Bart, Simone Schwarz-Bart, and Maryse Conde. The recognition of particularity of women’s struggles and the consequent contribution of female authors to Caribbean literature replenish a historiography which …

Knocked Down Again: An East L.A. Story On The Geography Of Color And Colors, Steven W. Bender Jan 2009

Knocked Down Again: An East L.A. Story On The Geography Of Color And Colors, Steven W. Bender

Faculty Articles

The article discusses the history of struggle of Latin Americans and the legacy of gang violence in East Los Angeles, California. The author states that the positive thing about the place is the closeness of the community and families. However, the 2000 Census states that ninety-seven percent of the city's population is Latin American with about a quarter living below poverty line. Moreover, sociologists consider gang warfare as a defense of turf marked by defined geographic boundaries.

The Transformation Of Originality In The Progressive-Era Debate Over Copyright In News, Robert Brauneis Jan 2009

The Transformation Of Originality In The Progressive-Era Debate Over Copyright In News, Robert Brauneis

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In the 1991 case of Feist Publications, Inc. v. Rural Telephone Service Co., Inc., the Supreme Court held unanimously that only those aspects of works which exhibited a "modicum of creativity" could be protected by copyright, and hence that factual matter was not copyrightable. Feist confirmed and expanded on the Court's statements in the 1918 case of International News Service v. Associated Press that news was not copyrightable apart from its literary form. Yet for the first three-quarters of the nineteenth century, the notion that copyright incorporated an originality requirement which excluded factual matter from protection was unknown to Anglo-American …

Shattering Colored Glass: The Trauma Of Magical Realism N Toni Morrison's Beloved And José Saramago's Blindness, Eric Edward Solomon Jan 2009

Shattering Colored Glass: The Trauma Of Magical Realism N Toni Morrison's Beloved And José Saramago's Blindness, Eric Edward Solomon

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to draw a literary connection between two distinct fields of study, magical realism and trauma studies, through the use of two specific works of fiction, Toni Morrison's Beloved and Jose Saramago's Blindness. In order to understand how the two fields of literary thought are connected. the thesis first attempts to distill the terms. With no definitive texts, magical realism and trauma studies are complex and seemingly indefinable ideas. However, through the process of definition, the thesis illustrates how the two are connected through the desire for both trauma, a "fleeting" concept, and magic, an …

Turkey And The European Union: Why Europe Doesn't Want A Taste Of Turkey, Ann Kirkpatrick Jacobs Jan 2009

Turkey And The European Union: Why Europe Doesn't Want A Taste Of Turkey, Ann Kirkpatrick Jacobs

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the debate surrounding Turkey’s accession into the European Union, namely the allegation by some scholars that there has been a shift in the type of opposition against Turkey during recent years. Its goal is to examine tlie reasons why this shift occurred and it focuses on France as a specific country in which a shift in opposition has occurred. In the first chapter, it analyzes editorials published in the two most important French newspapers, Le Monde and Le Figaro, alongside the context of the simultaneously occurring external and political events, in order to prove that the shift …

Is The Growth Of Temperate Forest Trees Enhanced Along An Ambient Nitrogen Deposition Gradient?, James E. Bedison, Brenden E. Mcneil

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The extent to which atmospheric N deposition is enhancing primary production and CO2sequestration along the ambient N deposition gradients found within many regional temperate forest ecosystems remains unknown. We used tree diameter measurements from 1984 and 2004, allometric equations, and estimates of wet N deposition from 32 permanent plots located along an ambient N deposition gradient in the Adirondack Park, New York, USA, to determine the effects of N deposition on the basal area and woody biomass increments (BAI and WBI, respectively) of individual stems from all the major tree species. Nitrogen deposition had either a neutral or positive effect …

A Study Of Youth Retention And The Challenge Of Delayed Commitment In The Norwegian Union, Victor Marley Jan 2009

A Study Of Youth Retention And The Challenge Of Delayed Commitment In The Norwegian Union, Victor Marley

180 Symposium Publications

A contributory factor in the increasing rates of young people going through the “back door” and out of our church is the extension of adolescence and the corresponding postponement of commitment. This paper will look at pluralism, the extension of adolescence, and the erosion of adulthood as some reasons why commitment is being delayed. Some fundamental questions will be addressed: Is there a need to focus on the age of commitment? What about rites of passage? Do we need some in the Adventist culture? This paper will, in conclusion, look at the experience of the Norwegian Union and the Absolute …
