Inheritance, Land Sales And The Future Of Maine's Forests, James M. Acheson, Tom Doak Jan 2009

Inheritance, Land Sales And The Future Of Maine's Forests, James M. Acheson, Tom Doak

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Large areas of the world’s forests are being converted to non-forest use. Th is article examines factors influencing decisions of small forest landowners in Maine to convert or sell their land. Our analysis is based on a large-scale survey of a random sample drawn from the membership lists of organizations of forest landowners in 2005. Maine landowners are caught between countervailing pressures. Although many of them love their land and want to pass it to their heirs, there are many economic, legal and social pressures motivating forest landowners to sell or convert their property. Analysis of the data on the …

Virtual Spaces: Employing A Synchronous Online Classroom To Facilitate Student Engagement In Online Learning, J. Lynn Mcbrien, Rui Cheng, Phyllis Jones

School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

This research study is a collaborative project between faculty in social foundations, special education, and instructional technology in which we analyze student data from six undergraduate and graduate courses related to the use of a virtual classroom space. Transactional distance theory (Moore & Kearsley, 1996) operates as our theoretical framework as we explore the role of a virtual classroom in distance education and analyze the ways in which a synchronous learning environment affects students’ learning experiences. Elluminate Live! was the software employed in the virtual classroom. In this analysis, particular themes emerged related to dialogue, structure, and learner autonomy. In …

Responsibility For Climate Change, By The Numbers, David A. Weisbach Jan 2009

Responsibility For Climate Change, By The Numbers, David A. Weisbach

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper examines the data on responsibility for climate change due to past emissions. It addresses two aspects of responsibility. First it shows that the data present a mixed picture. By some measures, developed or wealthy countries are responsible for most past emissions while on other means, responsibility is spread widely with poor countries responsible for a majority of emissions. The differences in the measurements are due two factors: whether the data uses a comprehensive measure of emissions and the extent to which the data is aggregated into regions. The more comprehensive the measure and the less aggregation, the more …

KIP Articles

As historically recognized, three stygobitic species of the subgenus Aviticambarus, genus Cambarus inhabit Mississippian limestone caves along the southern edge of the Southern Appalachians and Highland Rim in southeastern Tennessee and Northern Alabama, U.S.A. These include Cambarus hamulatus, C. jonesi, and C. veitchorum. All stygobitic members of the genus Procambarus inhabit caves in Florida, Cuba, and Mexico with exception of P. pecki (in the monotypic subgenus Remoticambarus), which exists in only three caves with C. jonesi in Northwestern Alabama. It was hypothesized that Procambarus pecki was derived from a primitive Procambarus stock that gave rise to the genera Cambarus and …

Socioeconomic Disparity In Healthcare-Seeking Behavior Among Chinese Women With Genitourinary Symptoms, Qi Zhang, Diane Lauderdale, Shanshan Mou, William I. Parish, Edward O. Laumann, John Schneider

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are of growing concern in China. Understanding the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and healthcare-seeking (HCS) behavior will help design effective policies to contain the epidemic of STIs across SES.

Methods: We used the Chinese Health and Family Life Survey, a nationally representative survey of 3813 adults from 48 Chinese cities and counties during 1999-2000. We studied the 730 women with at least one genito-urinary (GU) symptom. HCS was measured by whether respondents visited a hospital or an unrecognized clinic, self-treatment, or doing nothing. Formal treatment was defined as visiting a hospital. SES was measured …

Music Score Approval Plans In Research Libraries: A Survey Of Librarian Satisfaction With And Without Approval Plans, Elizabeth J. Cox, Roger Cross, John Ballestro

Articles

In this study, the researchers submitted a music score approval plan survey to all ARL libraries. Two surveys were created, one for libraries with music score approval plans, one for those without. Forty-four surveys were returned. The authors’ purpose was to analyze and discuss the survey results, incorporating elements of the scholarly work preceding this study. Discussions, roundtables, and listservs participated in by music librarians over the years formed the basis of the topic at hand. The goal was to ascertain whether these discussions and underlying assumptions of approval plans held true to the real world.

Exploring Perspectives On Landscape And Language Among Kaike Speakers In Dolpa, Nepal, Corrie Maya Daurio Jan 2009

Exploring Perspectives On Landscape And Language Among Kaike Speakers In Dolpa, Nepal, Corrie Maya Daurio

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The majority of the world’s languages are in danger of extinction within this century. Of the more than 6000 languages in the world, 4000-5000 are spoken by Indigenous peoples. Accompanying the loss of languages is the loss of the capacity for these peoples to transmit those aspects of their environmental knowledge systems which are embedded and expressed in their languages. The Kaike speakers of Tichurong in Dolpa, Nepal represent one of these endangered language communities, with approximately 800 speakers remaining. The purpose of this research was to engage Kaike speakers in an exploration of the relationships among their language, environment, …

Renewable Energy In Montana: System Applications And Technlogy, Mandi Lee Corr

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Energy is a critical topic of debate today, and much interest has turned to renewable energy forms. The negative implications of fossil fuel use are outweighing their benefits, as the twenty-first century has seen environmental, economic, and social consequences unfold. Montana is in a unique position in that it has five forms of renewable energy for heating and electricity generation purposes. Solar, wind, small-scale hydro, biomass, and geothermal energies are available across the state. These energy forms have the potential to provide residences and businesses with heat and electricity year-round, using a seasonally complementary, integrated system. The current installation of …

In addition, this paper addresses the role of women …

Glacier Monitoring In Ladakh And Zanskar, Northwestern India, Martin Edward Byrne Jan 2009

Glacier Monitoring In Ladakh And Zanskar, Northwestern India, Martin Edward Byrne

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Glaciers in the Himalaya are often heavily covered with supraglacial debris, making them difficult to study with remotely-sensed imagery alone. Various methods such as band ratios can be used effectively to map clean-ice glaciers; however, a thicker layer of debris often makes it impossible to distinguish between supraglacial debris and the surrounding terrain. Previously, a morphometric approach employing an ASTER-derived digital elevation model (DEM) has been used to map glaciers in the Khumbu Himal and the Tien Shan. This project aims first to test the ability of the morphometric procedure to map small glaciers; second, to use the morphometric approach …

Investigating The Relationships Between Seventh And Eighth Grade Science Teachers' Background, Self-Efficacy Toward Teaching Science As Inquiry, And Attitudes And Beliefs On Classroom Control, William T. Joern Jan 2009

Investigating The Relationships Between Seventh And Eighth Grade Science Teachers' Background, Self-Efficacy Toward Teaching Science As Inquiry, And Attitudes And Beliefs On Classroom Control, William T. Joern

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

An important component of science reform is the teaching of science as inquiry. Many barriers toward teaching science as inquiry have been documented but the list is incomplete. This study utilized a non-experimental correlational design to examine middle school science teachers' background and the relationships this has with teacher efficacy toward teaching science as inquiry and teachers' attitudes and beliefs toward classroom control. Because science inquiry activities involve greater classroom control skills by the instructor as opposed to teacher-centered instruction, the relationship between teacher efficacy toward teaching science as inquiry and teachers' attitudes and beliefs toward classroom control were important …

Adaptive Variation In Microbes: Insights From Wild And Experimental Populations Of Escherichia Coli, Margaret Ann Kinnersley Jan 2009

Adaptive Variation In Microbes: Insights From Wild And Experimental Populations Of Escherichia Coli, Margaret Ann Kinnersley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Intraspecific differences in genome composition and gene regulation are widespread in both natural and artificial prokaryotic systems. Understanding the molecular basis, population dynamics and fitness consequences of these differences can provide useful insight into many aspects of microbial ecology and evolution. The work presented here is a study of molecular variation in both natural and experimental populations of E. coli, conducted with the ultimate goal of gaining a better understanding of niche adaptation and the nature of molecular variation in microbes. In Chapter 2, the mechanistic basis of adaptation and diversification in a polymorphic experimental population of E. coli that …

Forest Habitat Improvement Planning On The Blackfoot-Clearwater Wildlife Management Area: A Case Study In Multiple Criteria Decision-Analysis, Christine Ann Paulu

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The forests of western Montana were historically characterized by mixed-severity fire regimes, which have been mostly absent due to fire suppression policies of the 20th century. This has changed stand structure and forest composition, resulting in a high risk of wildfire, loss of heterogeneity in forest types, and loss of valuable wildlife habitat. As a result forest stewardship, or holistic forest management, and long-term planning have been used widely by forest managers and landowners to improve forest health, to use resources efficiently, and to satisfy stakeholders. This case study shows how one agency, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP), could …

Identification Of Tree Species In Mixed Conifer Forests Using Laser Altimetry, Agus Suratno Jan 2009

Identification Of Tree Species In Mixed Conifer Forests Using Laser Altimetry, Agus Suratno

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Airborne laser scanning data is used to discriminate between Douglas-fir (.Pseudotsuga menziesii), ponderosa pine (Pirns ponderosa), lodgepole pine (.Pinus contorta), and western larch (Larix occidentalis) in a mixed coniferous forest of western Montana, USA. Laser-derived structural and intensity variables are investigated to classify tree species at individual tree and plot-level dominant species. Linear Discriminant Analysis is applied to discriminate between species, and in combination with Maximum Likelihood Classification, used to map species across the landscape. Oneway ANOVA tests indicate that proportions of first and single returns and mean intensities are significantly different between species (p-value < 0.001) at both individual tree and plot-dominant species levels. A single variable in the Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), e.g., mean or standard deviation intensity, can produce classification accuracy ranging from 49-61% at the dominant species level and 37-52% for individual trees. The accuracy can be improved to 95% and 68% respectively by using multiple variables, including proportions of return type, intensities, and canopy heights. Adding proportion of return-type improves classification accuracy at the dominant species level, but not for individual trees. The inclusion of both mean and standard deviation of canopy heights produce higher accuracy at both levels. Validation of the landscape classifications is performed using a stand database consisting of predominant and secondary species and with gridded, fixed-area plots. Assuming that stand homogeneity is at least within dominant species criteria (>70%), the application of intensity …

Abstract

This paper on the flowering plants of the Society Islands, French Polynesia, treats 114 families of dicots and 27 families of monocots. Included within them are at least 1166 species in 681 genera. Many additional species are highlighted and discussed where relevant information is available about them, but are not included in keys to genera, and generic descriptions are not provided; neither are they included in the above total figures. About two-thirds of the species have been introduced since the arrival in the Islands of the ship Endeavour commanded by Captain James Cook in 1769. His botanists, Joseph Banks …

A Political Turn: Highways And Mass Transit In American Mobility History, Michael R. Fein Ph.D. Jan 2009

A Political Turn: Highways And Mass Transit In American Mobility History, Michael R. Fein Ph.D.

Humanities Department Faculty Publications & Research

Mark Rose’s Interstate: Express Highway Politics (1979) and Bruce Seely’s Building the American Highway System: Engineers as Policy Makers (1987) signaled the opening of U.S. highway politics as a field for sustained scholarly investigation. In Interstate, Rose examined the political competition among interest groups, such as truck operators, that produced the landmark 1956 highway legislation. Seely’s focus was the road engineers themselves, led by Thomas MacDonald, whose uncanny ability to present themselves as ‘apolitical’ experts paradoxically allowed them to dominate the highly politicized drafting of the main contours of American highway policy. Together these two texts opened a range of …
