Sustainable Economic Development In Energy Rich Economies: A Regional Approach, Hodjat Ghadimi
Sustainable Economic Development In Energy Rich Economies: A Regional Approach, Hodjat Ghadimi
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
There is an extensive literature on or relating to development issues of energy rich economies – particularly those in the developing world. While national-level studies abound, the analyses of these economies at a regional scale or with a regional and spatial perspective are scarce. Generally, a bottom up regional approach to development and the value of insights that regional models and comparative regional studies provide have not received deserved attention in the field of development economics. Analyzing development sustainability in energy-based economies at a regional scale may provide insights not otherwise possible. National scale studies and models are mostly sectoral …

Creative Teaching And Its Assessment, Ananda Kumar Palaniappan
Creative Teaching And Its Assessment, Ananda Kumar Palaniappan
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In recent years, there has been much emphasis and motivation for teaching both at the secondary school and tertiary level to move from the traditional „chalk and talk‟ to a more creative and innovative teaching methodology. The Malaysian Education Ministry has initiated many training programs as well as curricular and evaluation changes to initiate this change which also included critical thinking. Various policies have been formulated together with huge investments on infrastructure and funding to accelerate this change. Hence, it is imperative to evaluate to what extent creative teaching has actually being carried out. In order to do this, it …

Robot Operator Specifications Derived From The Occupational Information Network, Michael D. Coovert, Linda R. Elliott
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009
The use of robots in aviation is widespread, for use as targets, decoys, remote sensing, reconnaissance, and increasingly for combat missions. Robots come in all forms and capabilities, from handheld micro air vehicles to hypersonic versions capable of high altitude long distance missions. At the same time, ground-based robots have proven effective for both military and civilian applications such as manufacturing and remote sensing / manipulations. Certainly, Talon and Packbot robots have proven their worth in battle conditions. Just as there is great variance in the type of robot being developed and utilized, so too is there tremendous variation operator …

Habitat Variation Among Aquatic Gastropod Assemblages Of Indiana, U.S.A., Mark Pyron, Jayson Beugly, Matthew Spielman, Jennifer Pritchett, Stephen J. Jacquemin
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We collected aquatic gastropods at 137 sites in lakes and streams of Indiana and tested for patterns of assemblages with environmental variables. The survey resulted in 32 species with a mean of 2.8 species at each site, and a mean abundance at each site of 144 individuals. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) multivariate analyses resulted in watershed drainage area, water conductivity, substrate category frequency, and dissolved oxygen as significant correlates of gastropod assemblage structure. Gastropod assemblages of lakes were not significantly different than assemblages of streams in the ordination. Prosobranch taxa occurred in higher abundances than pulmonate taxa at sites with …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Bus is one of the main alternatives of mass public transportation in Kuala Lumpur as it is cheaper and has better coverage area than its counterparts such as Light Rapid Train (LRT) and commuter train. Thousands of people use the bus interchanges around Kuala Lumpur to reach their destinations. In this paper, hazards at these bus interchanges are identified to prevent or, at least to minimize the number of accidents that might occur as well as to reduce health problem. Five bus interchanges were selected for this research; the Hentian Puduraya, Klang Bus Stand, Hentian Putra, Mydin Bus Stand and …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Molecular studies of population divergence and speciation across the Oriental Region are sparse, despite the regionâ s high biodiversity and extensive Pliocene and Pleistocene environmental change. A molecular phylogenetic study of the Neocellia Series of Anopheles mosquitoes was undertaken to identify patterns of diversification across the Oriental Region and to infer the role of Pleistocene and Pliocene climatic change. A robust phylogeny was constructed using CO2 and ND5 mitochondrial genes and ITS2 and D3 nuclear ribosomal markers. Bayesian analysis of mitochondrial genes was used to date divergence events. The repeated contraction and expansion of forest habitat resulting from Pleistocene climatic …
The Importance Of A Historical Perspective In Language Shift Studies: Focus On Minority Groups In Kuching, M.K. David
The Importance Of A Historical Perspective In Language Shift Studies: Focus On Minority Groups In Kuching, M.K. David
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
When a minority community begins losing its mother tongue to a more dominant one, this can be viewed as that heritage language being potentially on the path to extinction. An earlier study to investigate reasons for language shift in Sabah and Sarawak clearly shows both macro and micro variables are significant in causing language shift (David and Dealwis, 2008). In fact way back in 1952 Weinrich cited a range of ten variables as decisive factors in determining language shift. These are geography, indigenousness, cultural or group membership, religion, sex age, social status, occupation, rural versus urban residence and race. More …

Deconcentration, Counter-Urbanization, Or Trend Reversal? The Population Distribution Of Switzerland, Revisited, Mulugeta Kahsai, Peter V. Schaeffer
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
This study analyzes trends in the population distribution of Switzerland, with focus on the period 1980-2000. It updates and extends an earlier study (Schaeffer, 1992a). The extensions include analyses of population distribution trends by region and citizenship. Results show that Switzerland experienced deconcentration in the 1970s at the cantonal level, and in the 1980s and 1990s at the district level. The results also show a trend of moving away from large densely populated districts to small, sparsely populated and medium sized districts. There was a strong suburbanization trend starting the 1950s and counter-urbanization during 1980-2000. The core urban areas experienced …
Estuarine Influence On Tidally Driven Circulation In The South Atlantic Bight, Peter Bacopoulos
Estuarine Influence On Tidally Driven Circulation In The South Atlantic Bight, Peter Bacopoulos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A high-resolution, finite element-based, shallow water equation model is developed to simulate the tides in the South Atlantic Bight. The model is constructed to include all of the estuarine features along the southeastern United States seaboard: coastal inlets, rivers and tidal creeks, sounds and lagoons, intertidal zones including salt marshes and mangrove swamps, and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The estuaries are represented in the finite element mesh using triangular elements with side lengths on the order of tens of meters. Also incorporated into the model is a spatially distributed bottom friction parameterization, based on the various landcover and benthic characteristics …
Vibia Perpetua's Diary: A Women's Writing In A Roman Text Of Its Own, Melissa Perez
Vibia Perpetua's Diary: A Women's Writing In A Roman Text Of Its Own, Melissa Perez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Writing the history of women in antiquity is hindered by the lack of written sources by them. It has been the norm to assume that the only sources that can tell us something about them are the sources written by men. This thesis challenges this convention as it concerns the social history of Rome through the exploration of a written source by a woman named Vibia Perpetua. She was a Roman woman of twenty-two years from Roman Carthage, who was martyred on March 7, 203 C.E. The reason that we know of this Roman woman and what happened to her …

Species Richness, Distribution, And Relative Abundance Of Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Buffalo National River, Arkansas, M. Matthews, F. Usrey, S. W. Hodges, John L. Harris, Alan D. Christian
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Buffalo River in north-central Arkansas is approximately 246 km long and flows through the Boston Mountains and Springfield and Salem Plateaus to the White River near Buffalo City. The Buffalo River is America’s first National River with the National Park Service owning 11% of land in the watershed. The objectives of this project were to survey the entire perennially wet length of river, search for mussels of conservation concern, and document the freshwater mussel assemblages. During 2004 and 2005, 235 km of the river were qualitatively and quantitatively surveyed. We documented 64 mussel assemblages. Time constrained qualitatively sampled assemblages …

Comparison Of Pixel-Based Versus Object-Based Land Use/Land Cover Classificationmethodologies, N. D. Riggan Jr., Robert C. Weih Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) classification data have proven to be valuable assets for various governmental agencies, park managers, and natural resource managers. Traditional pixel-based classification methods have difficulty with high resolution imagery, resulting in a “salt and pepper” appearance. Newer object-based methods may prove to be more accurate. This study compared an object based classification procedure utilizing Feature Analyst© software with a traditional pixel-based methodology (supervised classification) when applied to medium-spatial resolution satellite imagery merged with high-spatial resolution aerial imagery. This study utilized two multi-spectral SPOT-5 satellite images, leaf-on and leaf-off, merged with a color infrared aerial image. Because of …

Organizational Alignment And Supply Chain Governance Structure: Introduction And Construct Validation, Bryan Ashenbaum, Arnold Maltz, Lisa Ellram, Mark Barratt
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to introduce and validate two new constructs with the potential to sharpen our understanding of how and why firms integrate their internal supply chains and assess the governance structure of their supply chains. The first construct, organizational alignment (OA), is a reflective scale measuring the extent to which upper management attempts to foster integration between internal supply chain functions. The second, supply chain governance structure (SCGS), is a formative index, and is a first attempt at developing a measurement instrument to assess SCGS along multiple dimensions.
Design/methodology/approach

Jim Crow Ethics And The Defense Of The Jena Six, Anthony V. Alfieri
Articles
This Article is the second in a three-part series on the 2006 prosecution and defense of the Jena Six in LaSalle Parish, Louisiana. The series, in turn, is part of a larger, ongoing project investigating the role of race, lawyers, and ethics in the American criminal-justice system. The purpose of the project is to understand the race-based, identity-making norms and practices of prosecutors and defenders in order to craft alternative civil rights and criminal-justice strategies in cases of racially-motivated violence. To that end, this Article revisits the prosecution and defense of the Jena Six in the hope of uncovering the …
Constructed Global Space, Constructed Citizenship, Micky Lee
Constructed Global Space, Constructed Citizenship, Micky Lee
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
This article examines the relation between global space and citizenship by examining the cases of WTO meeting and Hong Kong Disneyland. Scholars assert that global space can unsettle naturalised social relations. Yet, an ambiguous and vague sense of citizenship and a neoliberal spatiotemporal frame constrain how the state, the media, and the locals interpret the meanings of space, and how citizenship is manifested in space. In the global space of the WTO meeting and the Hong Kong Disneyland, the Hong Kong Chinese identity is reinforced by demonising South Korean farmers and mainland Chinese.
