Dust Emission At Franklin Lake Playa, Mojave Desert (Usa): Response To Meteorological And Hydrologic Changes 2005-2008, Richard L. Reynolds, Rian Bogle, John Vogel, Harland Goldstein, James Yount

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Playa type, size, and setting; playa hydrology; and surface-sediment characteristics are important controls on the type and amount of atmospheric dust emitted from playas. Soft, evaporite-rich sediment develops on the surfaces of some Mojave Desert (USA) playas (wet playas), where the water table is shallow (< 4 m). These areas are sources of atmospheric dust because of continuous or episodic replenishment of wind-erodible salts and disruption of the ground surface during salt formation by evaporation of ground water. Dust emission at Franklin Lake playa was monitored between March 2005 and April 2008. The dust record, based on day-time remote digital camera images captured during high wind, and compared with a nearby precipitation record, shows that aridity suppresses dust emission. High frequency of dust generation appears to be associated with relatively wet periods, identified as either heavy precipitation events or sustained regional precipitation over a few months. Several factors may act separately or in combination to account for this relation. Dust emission may respond rapidly to heavy precipitation when the dissolution of hard, wind-resistant evaporite mineral crusts is followed by the development of soft surfaces with thin, newly formed crusts that are vulnerable to wind erosion and (or) the production of loose aggregates of evaporite minerals that are quickly removed by even moderate winds. Dust loading may also increase when relatively high regional precipitation leads to decreasing depth to the water table, thereby increasing rates of vapor discharge, development of evaporite minerals, and temporary softening of playa surfaces. The seasonality of wind strength was not a major factor in dust-storm frequency at the playa. The lack of major dust emissions related to flood-derived sediment at Franklin Lake playa contrasts with some dry-lake systems elsewhere that may produce large amounts of dust from flood sediments. Flood sediments do not commonly accumulate on the surface of Franklin Lake playa because through-going drainage prevents frequent inundation and deposition of widespread flood sediment.

Doctor Vs. Priest: Urban Planning And Reform In Vetusta. Leopoldo Alas’S La Regenta, Anne W. Gilfoil

Decimonónica

At the end of the eighteenth century, new theories about disease transmission would have an enormous effect on city planning. The miasma theory challenged the old contact infection model of contagion. Disease transmission was no longer direct as in person-to- person contagion; it was, rather, the result of exposure to certain conditions in the atmosphere. Emanations from the earth produced by decomposing bodies and excrement poisoned the air and transmitted disease (Corbin 13–32). The miasma theory left a deep imprint on popular imagination. In a study of Madrid, published as late as 1902, the public health expert Philiph Hauser spoke …

The Canary In The Mind: Quintana, Pelayo (1805) And The Play Of War, David T. Gies

Decimonónica

They saw it coming. Writers. The Revolution. Not in any prescient way nor with any real accuracy, and certainly not with any predictability (they were playwrights and poets, after all, not futurologists), but they sensed disquiet, heard the nearly inaudible harp strings of discord playing on the horizon, and picked up on what Bécquer would later so beautifully refer to as “los átomos del aire” (208). When the invasion finally came and the war broke out in 1808, that subtle disquiet turned into a maelstrom of noise, a chorus of voices singing out a harsh reality, mocking an untenable situation …

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú Jan 2009

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú

History Faculty Publications

The article examines how adverse climatic conditions and high food prices influenced the opportunities of peasants in pre-industrial Mexico between 1730 and 1835. Particular attention is paid to data of soldier heights, global climate events, warm-season tree growth, and real food prices to determine how these factors may have affected urban and rural populations. Declines were seen in the general standard of living and average height, while the cost of food increased. It is argued that distribution and acquisition of food has an equal influence on biological well-being as the availability of food at any specific given time.

Islam : Between Message And History, Abdelmadjid Charfi, Abdou Filali-Ansary, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed, David Bond

In Translation: Modern Muslim Thinkers

This book could easily be called ‘A Guide for the Modern Muslim’, someone for whom the sentiments of his or her ancestors resonate but who cannot accept the canonised formulas of a prescriptive education.

Charfi spells out what for him is the essential message of Islam, followed by a history of its unfolding through the person of the Prophet Muhammad, whom he perceives as a visionary seeking to change the ideals, attitudes and behaviours of the society in which he lived. Charfi delineates the message and its history as two separate elements, conflated by tradition.

Charfi confronts with great lucidity …

Encyclopaedias About Muslim Civilisations, Aptin Khanbaghi

Muslim Civilisations Abstracts

Over the past 150 years, numerous encyclopaedias have been produced on Muslim civilisations, both by Muslims and non-Muslims, with different approaches to the organisation of knowledge and understanding of Muslim beliefs, cultures and societies. Access to and knowledge of these reference works and databases have until now been hindered by language barriers. The first volume in the MCA series seeks to overcome this obstacle by presenting material in three languages: English, Arabic and Turkish.

This is a unique reference catalogue containing 200 annotated bibliographies and abstracts of encyclopaedias published during the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

“No Tengo Otra Opción – Ya Me Voy”: Stories Of Family Separation Told By Dominican Immigrants, Sharon Utakis, Nelson Reynoso

Publications and Research

The Dominican community in New York City is a clear example of a transnational community: migrants move between the Dominican Republic and the United States, maintaining strong ties with both places. Dominicans migrate because of economic difficulties and to rejoin family members who have gone before them. Families often move in a stepwise fashion, with one or two members of the household immigrating first, and then bringing others over. Here we discuss the oral histories of three immigrants, Manuel, Yngrid, and Maria, who were separated from their families for at least three years during the course of immigration. Each decided …

DRI Press

From 1979 to 2003, more than 1.5 million Liberians were forced from their homes to escape from the violence and destruction of a protracted civil conflict. Hundreds of thousands became refugees and many eventually made their way to countries of resettlement including the United States and the United Kingdom. Most of their stories have never been told. This report on the experience of the Liberian diaspora, entitled A House with Two Rooms, is the culmination of three years of work in the United States, the United Kingdom and Buduburam Refugee Settlement in Ghana. The report has been submitted to the …

The Dilemma Of Disappearing Diatoms: Incorporating Diatom Dissolution Data Into Paleoenvironmental Modeling And Reconstruction, David B. Ryves, Richard W. Battarbee, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Taphonomic issues pose fundamental challenges for Quaternary scientists to recover environmental signals from biological proxies and make accurate inferences of past environments. The problem of microfossil preservation, specifically diatom dissolution, remains an important, but often overlooked, source of error in both qualitative and quantitative reconstructions of key variables from fossil samples, especially those using relative abundance data. A first step to tackling this complex issue is establishing an objective method of assessing preservation (here, diatom dissolution) that can be applied by different analysts and incorporated into routine counting strategies. Here, we establish a methodology for assessment of diatom dissolution under …

Estimating Hydraulic Conductivity From Drainage Patterns Derived From Dem-A Case Study In The Oregon Cascades, B. P. Grudzinski, W. Luo, Darryll T. Pederson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Hydraulic conductivity is an important parameter in hydrology which describes the ease with which water moves through porous media. This parameter is also important in understanding the hydrology of Mars. On Earth, this parameter can be measured by conducting controlled experiments in laboratories or conducting pumping tests in the field. This study introduces a new method of estimating hydraulic conductivity from drainage dissection pattern derived from digital elevation model (DEM). This method can be applied to Mars if it is robustly tested on Earth.

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Unsaturated zone salt reservoirs are potentially mobilized by increased groundwater recharge as semiarid lands are cultivated. This study explores the amounts of pore water sulfate and fluoride relative to chloride in unsaturated zone profiles, evaluates their sources, estimates mobilization due to past land use change, and assesses the impacts on groundwater quality. Inventories of water-extractable chloride, sulfate, and fluoride were determined from borehole samples of soils and sediments collected beneath natural ecosystems (N = 4), nonirrigated ("rain-fed") croplands (N = 18), and irrigated croplands (N = 6) in the southwestern United States and in the Murray Basin, …

Identifying The Postmodern/Cold War Interlock— Soliciting A Security Studies Pedagogy Au Courant, Michael R. Mcrill

Global Tides

One scholarly faction contends that the arenas of security studies and international politics have remained essentially the same post-World War II. The other sees the 1960s as illuminating a fundamental paradigm shift concerning security studies. The latter group asserts that the majority of security concerns has either been dropped or sharply shifted post-Cold War. Since then, studies have expanded to encompass a scholarly plea for broader definitions of national security. The advent and increase of nonmilitary threats has led many to argue that these threats must be considered within the arena of national security concerns, and other scholars assert that …

Law's Knowledge And Law's Effectiveness: Reflections From Legal Sociology And Legal Theory, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

Legal sociology is in a crisis - or so it is said. The field is not widely represented at Law Faculties today and, the claim goes, is in dire need of a new spirit. Meanwhile, scholars who are working in the area cover a wide array of research questions, ranging from criminology to family law, from urban governance to transitional justice, illustrating thus a fine sensitivity for important and fast evolving areas. This paper argues that indeed our times offer a great host of promising opportunities for legal sociological research. In midst of a truly dramatic economic crisis where anchoring …

Born To Be Wild: The 'Trans‐Systemic' Programme At Mcgill And The De‐Nationalization Of Legal Education, Helge Dedek, Armand De Mestral

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

One of the major challenges legal education faces nowadays is that jurisdictional boundaries are losing significance in an internationalized, globalized and post-regulatory environment. This calls into question the very notion of “law” itself, at least as traditionally understood as a system of posited norms within a given jurisdiction, and the classic model of legal education based on such an understanding of law. While North American legal education has a longstanding tradition of self-reflection, the situation in Europe is different: there is little incentive for legal scholars to devote a considerable amount of time to a serious scholarly treatment of the …

British Influences On The American And Canadian West: Capital, Cattle, And Clubs, 1870-1910, Todd David Holzaepfel

History Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation seeks to show the evolution of the influence of British investment and culture in three representative regions in the American and Canadian West. The timeframe of the study corresponds roughly to the "Beef Bonanza" period in the Western United States (1870-1900) and from the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway (1880-1910) to the subject regions in Western Canada. Because the topic of British influence is vast the vehicle of English gentlemen's clubs in each of the six subject cities was chosen as the focus to this study. The Commercial Club, renamed the Fort Worth Club, the Denver Club …

Fighting Piracy In Somalia (And Elsewhere): Why More Is Needed, Milena Sterio

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article argues that pirates should be treated as terrorists and that piracy-fighting countries should rely on a variety of antiterrorist conventions to justify the capture and prosecution of pirates. To provide a comprehensive outlook on piracy, Part I of this Article describes the history of piracy and its reappearance in the modern world. Part II briefly describes the resurgence of modern-day piracy, first in Southeast Asia and then in Somalia. Part III provides the current international legal framework for battling piracy, by focusing first on the definition of piracy in international law, and then on the existing international legal …
