Gis Analyses Of Paleo-Fire Regimes In Ponderosa Pine (Pinus Ponderosa) Forests: Extending Spatial Approaches In Ecological Interpretation., James T. Kernan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fire is an inherently spatial process that is tightly coupled to spatial patterns in climate and topography. This is particularly true in the dry western United States, where confounded by the legacy of fire suppression and the trend in global warming, large high severity fires are increasingly frequent. Recent work has integrated space and time analyses of fire regimes through the application of geographic information science (GIS). GIS was developed for spatial studies, and it can be effective in multi-dimensional interpretations of fire ecology in many vegetated ecosystems. In order to examine the role of fire in dry ponderosa pine …

A Gis Analysis On Possible Photovoltaic Cell Use For Energy Reduction During Peak Hours In Huntington, West Virginia, James Eric Tadlock
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Solar panels are one of the fastest growing renewable energy technologies. This study aims to identify to what extent roof-mounted solar panels can reduce the need of power provided by Appalachian Power Company. Data from the Reliability First Corporation was employed to determine the individual average household power usage. Three study areas in Huntington, West Virginia, were selected to determine if solar panels could be implemented. Roofs in the study areas were digitized to calculate the available area. Based on the average household usage, four different sized photovoltaic systems were determined. Potential power production was computed to identify any offset …

Teach The Children: Education And Knowledge In Recent Children's Fantasy, Elisabeth Rose Gruner
English Faculty Publications
This essay is an investigation into how learning is portrayed in children's books. It starts from two premises: first, that at least one origin of children's literature is in didacticism, and that learning and pedagogy continue to be important in much of the literature we provide for children today. Thus, for example, David Rudd claims that most histories of children's literature on "the tension between instruction and entertainment," and that the genre as we know it develops within, among other things, "an educational system promoting literacy" (29, 34). Seth Lerer's recent Children's Literature: A Reader's History similarly traces the origins …
The Role Of Parents Involved In The College Admissions Process Note, Michael P. Pohorylo
The Role Of Parents Involved In The College Admissions Process Note, Michael P. Pohorylo
Connecticut Law Review
After the U.S. Supreme Court decided the 2003 University of Michigan affirmative action cases, the law concerning the use of race-based affirmative action programs in the college admissions process seemed to be settled for the next few decades. However, in 2007, the Supreme Court once again revisited the use of race-based affirmative action, this time at the K–12 level, and subtly, yet significantly, altered how the law will treat challenges to affirmative action programs in higher education. The purpose of this Note is to examine the likely impact the holding of this 2007 U.S. Supreme Court case, Parents Involved in …
Demosprudence, Interactive Federalism, And Twenty Years Of Sheff V. O'Neill Essay, Justin R. Long
Demosprudence, Interactive Federalism, And Twenty Years Of Sheff V. O'Neill Essay, Justin R. Long
Connecticut Law Review
Professor Lani Guinier and others have recently developed a theory called “demosprudence” that explains the democracy-enhancing potential of certain types of U.S. Supreme Court dissents. Separately, state constitutionalists have described state constitutions’ capacity to offer a base of resistance against the U.S. Supreme Court’s narrow conception of individual rights. Applying these two seemingly unrelated theories to school desegregation litigation in Connecticut and to same-sex marriage litigation in Iowa, this Essay suggests that certain state constitutional decisions might function like U.S. Supreme Court dissents to enhance democratic activism. In this way, interactive federalism might usefully serve as a category of demosprudence.

"Ripple Effects" And Forecasting Home Prices In Los Angeles, Las Vegas, And Phoenix, Rangan Gupta, Stephen M. Miller
"Ripple Effects" And Forecasting Home Prices In Los Angeles, Las Vegas, And Phoenix, Rangan Gupta, Stephen M. Miller
Economics Working Papers
We examine the time-series relationship between housing prices in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. First, temporal Granger causality tests reveal that Los Angeles housing prices cause housing prices in Las Vegas (directly) and Phoenix (indirectly). In addition, Las Vegas housing prices cause housing prices in Phoenix. Los Angeles housing prices prove exogenous in a temporal sense and Phoenix housing prices do not cause prices in the other two markets. Second, we calculate out-of-sample forecasts in each market, using various vector autoregessive (VAR) and vector error-correction (VEC) models, as well as Bayesian, spatial, and causality versions of these models with …

Vultures, Hyenas, And African Debt: Private Equity And Zambia, Olufunmilayo B. Arewa
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
Although the Donegal court explicitly limited its scrutiny to the legal questions raised by the case rather than questions of morality and humanity, 23 the moral and ethical considerations connected with the activities of vulture investors are significant. This is particularly true in Africa, which in the post-colonial period has experienced poor economic performance in both absolute and relative terms, as well as significant and even increasing levels of poverty.24 Poverty has exacerbated political instability in Africa.25 The political situation in much of the African continent is similarly tenuous, with sub-Saharan African states in many instances serving as exemplars of …

Political Spaces And Remediated Places: Rearticulating The Role Of Technology In The Writing Center, Russell Carpenter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Writing center directors (WCDs) often situate their programs in physical and virtual spaces without fully studying the pedagogical and political implications of their decisions. Without intense study, writing centers risk building programs within spaces that undermine their missions and philosophies. In The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre argues that "From the analytic standpoint, the spatial practice of a society is revealed through the deciphering of its space" (38). The study of space also reveals important political and financial priorities within the institution. Furthermore, the positioning of buildings and the spatial layout of a campus display the institution's priorities and attitudes …

The wolf spider genus Zoica Simon 1898 is currently known only from the Indo-Australasian region, including India in the west to northern Western Australia and Papua New Guinea in the east. Here we extend the known distribution of the genus into the Pacific region by describing two new species, Z. carolinensis new species from the Caroline Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Z. pacifica new species from the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Protecting The Innocent: Post-Conviction Dna Exoneration, Sophia S. Chang
Protecting The Innocent: Post-Conviction Dna Exoneration, Sophia S. Chang
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Eight states in the nation do not have laws allowing post-conviction DNA exoneration: Alabama, Alaska, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Without such laws, most wrongly convicted prisoners have no chance at proving their innocence because their defense depends on the exculpatory, yet unattainable, evidence that DNA provides. Denial of access to DNA evidence, whether prior to or after conviction, is an unconstitutional violation of due process. Additionally, forcing innocent people to remain in prison denies basic rights of prisoners and constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
This Note argues that the prohibition of post-conviction DNA exoneration defeats …

Rethinking Drug Courts: Restorative Justice As A Response To Racial Injustice, Michael M. O'Hear
Rethinking Drug Courts: Restorative Justice As A Response To Racial Injustice, Michael M. O'Hear
Faculty Publications
Specialized drug treatment courts have become a popular alternative to more punitive approaches to the "war on drugs," with nearly 2,000 such courts now established across the United States. One source of their appeal is the belief that they will ameliorate the dramatic racial disparities in the nation's prison population - disparities that result in large measure from the long sentences handed out for some drug crimes in conventional criminal courts. However, experience has shown that drug courts are not a "do-no-harm" innovation. Drug courts can produce both winners and losers when compared to conventional court processing, and there are …

A Case Study Of Institutional Visioning, Public Good, And The Renewal Of Democracy: The Theory And Practice Of Public Good Work At The University Of Denver, Eric Fretz, Nicholas J. Cutforth, Nicole Nicotera, Sheila Summers Thompson
Research Methods and Statistics: Faculty Scholarship
In 2001, the University of Denver included language in its vision statement that committed the institution to becoming “a great private university dedicated to the public good.” This essay (1) explains how the development of an institutional visioning statement led to the implementation of a series of campus dialogues
and action steps designed to forward public good work at the university; (2) presents campus conversations and current literature to offer a theory of public good work within private research universities; and (3) documents challenges and lessons learned through institutional efforts to embrace a culture of engagement.

Production Of Magnesium From Great Salt Lake, Utah Usa, Thomas G. Tripp
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Magnesium metal has been commercially produced from the waters of Great Salt Lake since 1972. Worldwide use of magnesium has markedly increased over the last twenty years due to its unique properties of low density and high strength. Great Salt Lake is a valuable resource for the recovery of magnesium minerals due to its chemical composition, natural geography/climate and proximity to transportation and markets. US Magnesium LLC and its predecessors have overcome various technical challenges as well as political hurdles, climatic calamities and market uncertainties. This discussion will describe the extensive use of solar evaporation ponds to produce suitable raw …
