Pine Chronologies In Central Appalachian Forests: Fiery Implications, Rachel Clark Jan 2009

Pine Chronologies In Central Appalachian Forests: Fiery Implications, Rachel Clark

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

Eastern forests are lush, humid and dominated by hardwoods, relative to fire-prone forests of the West. But until recently, there was little clear evidence for the fi re history of central Appalachia. Specifi cally, there were no tree-ring chronologies depicting fi re history. Dr. Henri Grissino-Mayer of the University of Tennessee and Dr. Charles Lafon of Texas A&M University along with their colleagues found remnant pine stands hidden in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests of Virginia. They painstakingly acquired more than 600 pine cross sections, and discovered that not only did fire once occur in these forests, but …

The Ports Of Secession: The Economics Of Florida Ports In The Secession Crisis, Michael P. Robbins Jan 2009

The Ports Of Secession: The Economics Of Florida Ports In The Secession Crisis, Michael P. Robbins

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

The root of large-scale human conflict is the protection of economic interests. The economic motivations for the South to secede clashed with the interests of the North in preserving the trade relationships that existed. In choosing the path that led to conflict over peace, decision-makers leaned towards what they believed would be most profitable on the margins. The financial viability of a southern Confederacy was contingent upon the successful separation of Gulf states from the Union. The economic interests generated by Florida's Gulf ports provided a strong incentive for the state to secede, for the emerging Confederacy to support that …

Thirty-three snowpack models of varying complexity and purpose were evaluated across a wide range of hydrometeorological and forest canopy conditions at five Northern Hemisphere locations, for up to two winter snow seasons. Modeled estimates of snow water equivalent (SWE) or depth were compared to observations at forest and open sites at each location. Precipitation phase and duration of above-freezing air temperatures are shown to be major influences on divergence and convergence of modeled estimates of the subcanopy snowpack. When models are considered collectively at all locations, comparisons with observations show that it is harder to model SWE at forested sites …

Book Review Of The Wood Midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Lestremiinae) Of Fennoscandia And Denmark By Mathias Jaschhof And Catrin Jaschhof, Raymond Gagne Jan 2009

Book Review Of The Wood Midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Lestremiinae) Of Fennoscandia And Denmark By Mathias Jaschhof And Catrin Jaschhof, Raymond Gagne

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

The present study is the result of a four-year project supported by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative to collect and systematize the Lestremiinae. It fleshes out the skeleton presented in Jaschhof (1998) of this group for the Palearctic Region, bringing to bear the broad knowledge gained from the authors’ studies since 1998 from Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, and New Zealand and Mathias Jaschhof’s subsequent studies of the Mamaev types. More species of wood midges (n = 203) are now known from Sweden than any other country or all of the Western Hemisphere. The fact that until the 1990s only four species …

The Search For Irishness (Chapter One Of Buffoonery In Irish Drama: Staging Twentieth-Century Post-Colonial Stereotypes), Kathleen A. Heininge

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "A striking feature in Irish culture since at least the late 19th century is an impulse to define what constitutes "Irish," seemingly to establish the qualifications of those who claim to be Irish. It is an impulse that manifests itself in literature as diverse as George Bernard Shaw's play, john Buff's Other Island, James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, or Seamus Heaney's Station Island. The same impulse is at work in the public lives of figures like Oscar Wilde, who while exiled created a fascinating persona for himself; Patrick O'Brian, who refashioned himself as …

Service Learning As An Instructional Strategy For The Preparation Of Teachers, Alisa J. Bates, Dina Drits, Cathi Allen, Peggy Mccandless

CUP Faculty Research

This paper addresses the strengths and challenges of university-based service learning projects, using preservice elementary teachers in an undergraduate social studies methods course as a model for implementing service learning in university courses. The goal of the project was to provide future teachers with the motivation and experience in facilitating service learning projects as a means of promoting student equity, social responsibility, and social justice. The carryover of this attitude and response to the first year of the teaching career is considered. Three cases of teachers are presented to share findings that focus on issues of context, teacher characteristics, understanding …

Jesus In America, Claudia Gould Jan 2009

Jesus In America, Claudia Gould

All USU Press Publications

Claudia Gould draws on fieldwork she conducted, as an anthropologist, in North Carolina, where she earlier spent large parts of her childhood, among a net of paternal relations. From that ethnography and from lifelong observation, she crafts stories that lay open the human heart and social complications of fundamentalist Christian belief. These stories and the compelling characters who inhabit them pull us into the complicated, variable core of religious experience among southern American Christians. Jesus in America, a perceptive work rich with cultural insight, is a singular addition to the growing genre of ethnographic fiction.

Dangerous Writing: Understanding And Political Economy Of Composition, Tony Scott

All USU Press Publications

Building on recent work in rhetoric and composition that takes an historical materialist approach, Dangerous Writing outlines a political economic theory of composition. In addition to work by others, Tony Scott also draws from two of his own studies--a classroom ethnography of an upper division writing class that was focused on labor and institutionality, and a qualitative study of the function of textbooks within a writing program. The book connects pedagogical practices in writing classes to their broader political economic contexts, and argues that the power of students' writing is prevented from reaching its potential by pressures within the academy …

The Long-Lasting Effects Of International Study Abroad Programs On College Graduates, Mary Katharine Rousopoulos Jan 2009

The Long-Lasting Effects Of International Study Abroad Programs On College Graduates, Mary Katharine Rousopoulos

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Do the short-term effects of international study abroad programs (ISAPs) during the college undergraduate years continue post college? To determine whether ISAP participants perceive these benefits as long lasting, six college graduates from a small, mid-western, faith-based university were interviewed about their experience studying abroad. With the chance to share perceptions of their changed understanding or actions, the interviews focused on the following areas: career choice, personal values and behavior changes, relationships, spiritual growth, and intellectual knowledge. Results indicate that college graduates do perceive a number of lasting changes related to their time studying abroad.

“Utilization, Development And Conservation” Of Natural Resources For The Maximum Benefit Of Alaskans: Scrutinizing Alaska’S Permitting Regime For Large Mines, Susan Reeves, Michael Jungreis, Tina Sellers, Jim Wilkson

Alaska Law Review Online Articles Forum

This Article disputes analyses and conclusions presented in an article about Pebble Mine published in the Alaska Law Review’s June 2008 issue. This Article discusses the history of mining in Alaska and the Pebble Project and describes the permitting regime applicable to mining exploration or development projects as it has been developed by the Alaska Legislature and the United States Congress, implemented by state and federal administrative agencies, and interpreted by federal and state courts. The Authors argue that the mining industry in Alaska has not historically proved detrimental to the fishing industry and that numerous and adequate legal safeguards …

Participatory Lawyering & The Ivory Tower: Conducting A Forensic Law Audit In The Aftermath Of Virginia Tech, Susan P. Stuart Jan 2009

Participatory Lawyering & The Ivory Tower: Conducting A Forensic Law Audit In The Aftermath Of Virginia Tech, Susan P. Stuart

Law Faculty Publications

The tragic events at Virginia Tech in 2007 sent a cold wind blowing through the halls of higher education institutions: a Virginia Tech student, who had fallen through the cracks of the school's mental health services and disciplinary procedures, armed himself with firearms and murdered thirty-two students and a professor before committing suicide. In the wake of that massacre, several states and individual interest groups issued reports on campus readiness for similar catastrophes. A consistent theme throughout those reports emphasized the necessity for individual institutions to review their procedures to deal with campus violence.

This Article focuses on that institutional …

Taylor V. Mayor And City Council Of Baltimore: Baltimore Sewerage And The City’S Agenda In The Early Twentieth Century, Christian Mann

Legal History Publications

Taylor v. Mayor and City Council of Baltimore was decided by the Court of Appeals in 1917. Nettie Taylor sued the city in 1914 because of the disagreeable smell coming from the newly constructed Back River Sewage Treatment Plant. She sued for damages done to her hotel property by the odor. Taylor’s hotel was situated on a tract of land on Back River, in the Essex area. The hotel Taylor owned was partly a brothel as well as a saloon, which was a common establishment in the surrounding area. The Court of Appeals ruled in Taylor’s favor, ordering the city …

Climate Change And The World’S “Sacred Sea”—Lake Baikal, Siberia, Marianne V. Moore, Stephanie E. Hampton, Lyubov R. Izmest'eva, Eugene A. Silow, Ekaterina V. Peshkova, Boris K. Pavlov

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Lake Baikal—the world's largest, oldest, and most biotically diverse lake—is responding strongly to climate change, according to recent analyses of water temperature and ice cover. By the end of this century, the climate of the Baikal region will be warmer and wetter, particularly in winter. As the climate changes, ice cover and transparency, water temperature, wind dynamics and mixing, and nutrient levels are the key abiotic variables that will shift, thus eliciting many biotic responses. Among the abiotic variables, changes in ice cover will quite likely alter food-web structure and function most because of the diverse ways in which ice …

Who's At The Helm - The Federal Circuit's Rule Of Deference And The Systemic Absence Of Controlling Precedent In Matters Of Patent Litigation Procedure, Peter J. Karol Jan 2009

Who's At The Helm - The Federal Circuit's Rule Of Deference And The Systemic Absence Of Controlling Precedent In Matters Of Patent Litigation Procedure, Peter J. Karol

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article considers the Federal Circuit’s rule of deference to the law of the regional circuits in matters of procedure as that rule approaches its twenty-fifth anniversary. Using the recent Bell Atlantic v. Twombly pleading case as an illustration, the article observes that the structure of the current appellate review scheme creates a systemic absence of controlling precedent relating to patent litigation procedure. Moreover, the arguments usually advanced for the rule’s existence, including efficiency gains and legislative history, are doubtful. As prior scholarship has shown, the rule is not a natural byproduct of the appellate structure created by Congress when …
