The Role Of Landscape Connectivity In Assembling Exotic Plant Communities: A Network Analysis, Emily S. Minor, Samantha M. Tessel, Katharina A.M. Engelhardt, Todd R. Lookingbill
Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications
Landscape fragmentation and exotic species invasions are two modern-day forces that have strong and largely irreversible effects on native diversity worldwide. The spatial arrangement of habitat fragments is critical in affecting movement of individuals through a landscape, but little is known about how invasive species respond to landscape configuration relative to native species. This information is crucial for managing the global threat of invasive species spread. Using network analysis and partial Mantel tests to control for covarying environmental conditions, we show that forest plant communities in a fragmented landscape have spatial structure that is best captured by a network representation …

Visualization Methods And User Interface Design Guidelines For Rapid Decision Making In Complex Multi-Task Time-Critical Environments, Sriram Mahadevan
Visualization Methods And User Interface Design Guidelines For Rapid Decision Making In Complex Multi-Task Time-Critical Environments, Sriram Mahadevan
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Real-world scenarios are complex dynamic systems that are often overloaded with information. Effective performance of these dynamic systems depends on the objects in such systems and the relationship among them. The control of many of these systems is semi-automated. Human operators constantly monitor and control these systems, assess the situation and often make decisions under time pressure. However, this supervisory control paradigm in a dual-task environment can be a very challenging task. Existing interface design methodologies and techniques have not delved deeply enough into defining information displays for complex, dynamic, time-critical, dual-task environments with capabilities for rapid task change awareness …

Erratic Monsoon, Growing Water Demand, And Declining Water Table
Erratic Monsoon, Growing Water Demand, And Declining Water Table
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
In India, water resources are governed by the southwest monsoon. The water demand is increasing day by day due to population growth, rapid urbanisation, and multiple cropping practices. Due to changing climatic conditions monsoon, the chief controller of rainfall is found to be very irregular. Erratic monsoon with insufficient rainfall in combination with high heat-flow and over-exploitation of ground water imparts stress on the water resources, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Time-series analysis of water-table fluctuations provides idea about temporal variation of aquifer-recharge and availability of ground-water resources. In the present study, an attempt has been made to assess …
Heterarchy As Complexity: Archaeology In Yoro, Honduras, Julia A. Hendon, Rosemary A. Joyce, Russell Sheptak
Heterarchy As Complexity: Archaeology In Yoro, Honduras, Julia A. Hendon, Rosemary A. Joyce, Russell Sheptak
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Based on archaeological evidence from the Cuyumapa Valley in Honduras, including the presence of multiple ballcourts, this paper argues that archaeologists need to pay more attention to Carole Crumley's concept of heterarchy when considering social relations, political relations, and power in ancient societies such as those of the Maya and their neighbors in Mesoamerica. We redefine complexity to include less centralized but regionally heterogeneous societies in which social and political relations are not all centralized into a single hierarchical structure. The Cuyumapa Valley falls in the zone traditionally described as the southeastern edge or periphery of Mesoamerica. Yet our research …

Positivism, New Haven Jurisprudence, And The Fragmentation Of International Law, Tai-Heng Cheng
Positivism, New Haven Jurisprudence, And The Fragmentation Of International Law, Tai-Heng Cheng
International & Comparative Law Colloquium Papers
This Article addresses the fragmentation of international law and international legal theory. This problem has become increasingly acute. As international interactions have increased exponentially among a broad range of domestic and international actors, the need to coordinate and regulate international actions has correspondingly intensified. Because actors cannot seem to agree on what international law is, consensus on applicable international laws and legal behavior often remains elusive. Using positivism and policy-oriented jurisprudence – two major theories of international law – as foci of inquiry, this Article demonstrates that the gulf between the two international legal theories are not really meaningful conceptual …

Botany At Eastern Illinois University, Marissa C. Jernegan, Nancy E. Coutant, Janice M. Coons
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Eastern Illinois University was established in 1899, and from its beginning the importance of the botanical sciences was recognized. Two terms of botany were required for the four year program. Dr. Otis W. Caldwell, a botanist, was one of the original faculty members. He taught all of the biology courses and initiated the acquisition of a greenhouse. Caldwell was the first in a series of talented and dedicated botany professors including Edgar N. Transeau, Ernest L. Stover, Hiram F. Thut and John E. Ebinger. These and many other professors incorporated a field component into almost all classes. This dedication to …

The Effects Of Human Activities On The Conservation Of Endangered Sea Turtles In Mexico : A Gis And Ethnographic Analysis, Joseì Rolando Pantoja
The Effects Of Human Activities On The Conservation Of Endangered Sea Turtles In Mexico : A Gis And Ethnographic Analysis, Joseì Rolando Pantoja
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This is a study about the effects of human activities and tourist development on the Olive Ridley, an endangered sea turtle species that nests on the beaches of the Northern shores of the Bay of Banderas, Nayarit, Mexico. I traveled to the site and I used a mixed methods approach to do my research. First, I mapped the nesting sea turtle sites using GIS/GPS technology. I recorded the location of the nests on the beach using the GPS device for a period of three weeks. The data were imported into GIS and analyzed. Second, for the Ethnographic qualitative methods, I …
Heterogeneous Transport Costs And Spatial Sorting In A Model Of New Economic Geography, Corey Lang
Heterogeneous Transport Costs And Spatial Sorting In A Model Of New Economic Geography, Corey Lang
Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications
Transportation costs are of central importance in the New Economic Geography literature, though assumptions about transportation costs continue to be simplistic. This paper begins to address these simplifications by assuming that transportation costs for manufactured goods are heterogeneous. Basic results are consistent with standard models showing dispersion of economic activity for high transport costs and eventual agglomeration as transport costs decline. However, several novel features arise too. Many unstable, dispersed equilibria exist for high average transport costs, but converge to a stable equilibrium path as transport costs decrease. Equilibrium paths smoothly transition from dispersion to agglomeration and do so at …

Increasing Student Participation And Motivation In A Whole New Way, Jessica Leclere
Increasing Student Participation And Motivation In A Whole New Way, Jessica Leclere
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
A student does not understand a new concept the teacher has just finished explaining, but instead of raising his or her hand to ask the question the student feels embarrassed or shy to ask. My project attempts to increase students' ability to overcome shyness by giving students the opportunity to become more interested and involved in their learning process. Each student will receive a "STOP/OK" sign that they will have at their own desk. This will allow shy students to get the individual attention they need.
