Addressing Some Inherent Challenges To Good Corporate Governance:, N Balasubramanian

Working Papers

Are corporations, in general, amenable to good governance? Are there inherent incompatibilities between good governance and the corporate format of organizations? How can these be addressed satisfactorily without over-regulation that might impair entrepreneurial potential? These are some of the nagging issues this paper explores and offers some radical suggestions for consideration Commissioned Article for The Indian Journal of Industrial Relations: A Review of Economic & Social Development, Shri Ram Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources, New Delhi. Physical Activity Levels Of Older Community-Dwelling Adults Are Influenced By Summer Weather Variables, Caitlin A. Brandon, Dawn P. Gill, Mark Speechley, Jason Gilliland, Gareth R. Jones

Geography & Environment Publications

Adequate daily physical activity (PA) is important for maintaining functional capacity and independence in older adults. However, most older adults in Canada do not engage in enough PA to sustain fitness and functional independence. Environmental influences, such as warmer daytime temperatures, may influence PA participation; however, few studies have examined the effect of summertime temperatures on PA levels in older adults. This investigation measured the influence of summertime weather variables on PA in 48 community-dwelling older adults who were randomly recruited from a local seniors’ community centre. Each participant wore an accelerometer for a single 7-consecutive-day period (between 30 May …

Rural Life Census Data Center Newsletter: Private Industry Change In South Dakota, Priyanka Chatterjee, W. Trevor Brooks, Michael Mccurry

Census Data Center Newsletter Archive: 2007-2010

South Dakota leaders continue to emphasize the importance of economic development. One aspect of assessing economic development is private industry growth. The South Dakota Chamber of Commerce states:
Economic development is not a choice but rather a necessity. Economies that are advancing create jobs with higher pay, offer people amenities and necessities, and provide the tax base for schools, infrastructure, and law enforcement plus many of the intangibles known as “quality of life.” (South Dakota Chamber of Commerce 2006). Private sector jobs make up a large percentage of South Dakota’s jobs. Capitalistic economies, like the United States’, depend on the …

Global Asia Journal

Between the arrival of Robert Morrison in 1807, the first Protestant

missionary to China, and the expulsion of Western missionaries in the early

1950s, one important area of missionary work for Chinese women was the

establishment of schools at the primary, secondary and university levels.

This education work afforded girls and young women opportunities for

advancement not provided under the existing patriarchal society. This

article focuses on the development of the American Presbyterian primary

and secondary schools for girls in the rural area of Weixian in Shandong

province. The Presbyterian station in Weixian played a leading role in

Frenzy-Free Funerals: The Least America Owes Its Fallen Heroes, Robert J. Grindle

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Frenzy-Free Funerals: The Least America Owes its Fallen Heroes analyzes the constitutionality of the Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act (RAFHA). After detailing relevant First Amendment cases, the note examines court treatment of funerals and death-related issues. The history and purpose of funerals is examined from a psychological and sociological perspective, including a funeral's significance to individuals and society at-large. Finally, the note concludes that the RAFHA is constitutional under the First Amendment, given the relevant test, court cases, and societal norms.

Insecta Mundi

The literature pertaining to natural history of Endomychidae (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea) is reviewed. One hundred fungal host records are provided for 32 endomychid species. Twenty-three records of endomychid yeast endosymbionts are compiled. Summaries are also presented for feeding preferences, interactions with natural enemies, non-lethal symbiotic relationships, and pest activity within the family. Unusual endomychid behaviors and habitats are reviewed, with particular attention to gregariousness and defensive strategies within Endomychidae.

A Survey Of Western United States Instream Flow Programs And The Policies That Protect A River's Ecosystem, Kyle Jackson Apr 2009

A Survey Of Western United States Instream Flow Programs And The Policies That Protect A River's Ecosystem, Kyle Jackson

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The Western United States can best be described as a vast, varying land, with the high plains to the east and the jagged horizons of Rockies to the west. However there is one common trait shared by these states: the lack of water resources. With the continued development of this land, the fact that water is scarce is becoming more real. This issue became more difficult to handle as the public became more aware that many competing uses existed for the finite resource, and those different uses were degrading the natural environments of the surface waters. With this realization instream …

Political, Economic, And Legal Influences On Gender Inequality, Brittani Melvin Apr 2009

Political, Economic, And Legal Influences On Gender Inequality, Brittani Melvin

XULAneXUS

Abstract Obtaining equality has been a continuous struggle in the United States. Race, class, and gender inequality are extensive in this country, so much so that these aspects of inequality often intersect, making the effects of inequality more prevalent. In discussing gender inequality, many only consider the variations in income, employment, and opportunity that exist between men and women. The purpose of this paper is to examine the inequalities that occur within gender inequality, namely on the basis of race and class. This paper will attempt to answer how the political, economic, and legal practices that often govern this nation …

India-Canada Trade And Immigration Linkages: A Case Of Regional (Dis)Advantage?, Margaret Walton-Roberts

What Determines The Level Of Funding For An Endangered Species?, Josh Mahoney Apr 2009

What Determines The Level Of Funding For An Endangered Species?, Josh Mahoney

Major Themes in Economics

The U.S. federal government allocates resources for the protection of endangered species. Using an ordinary least squares regression, the study analyzes what variables affect the amount of funds an endangered vertebrate receives from the federal government. The results suggest that animal size affects spending decisions. Specifically, larger animals receive more money. Animals designated as high priorities by the federal government do not receive significantly more funds than animals given lower priority. Animals in conflict with economic development, however, are given preference in spending decisions. Overall, the results indicate a lack of consistency in current policy towards endangered species preservation.

Doctors And Imams: Investigating The Integrated Schools Of Mombasa, Kenya, Beth Ann Williams Apr 2009

Doctors And Imams: Investigating The Integrated Schools Of Mombasa, Kenya, Beth Ann Williams

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the arrival of Europeans in the 19th century there has been tension within the Swahili community between the traditional Islamic madarasa system of education and the new Western model they brought. In recent decades a new dimension has been added to this struggle through schools which combine the two different institutes. There are two types of integrated schools currently operating within Mombasa. The first is a network of integrated nursery schools founded by the Madarasa Program. The Program works through their schools to empower and educate impoverished Muslim areas using ideas of community ownership and development. The Program, and …
