Point-Of-Use Arsenic Treatment Using Activated Alumina, T. Jeffery Cotter May 2009

Point-Of-Use Arsenic Treatment Using Activated Alumina, T. Jeffery Cotter

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Effective and affordable arsenic removal from drinking water has become a significant issue recently. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has promulgated a new maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic in drinking water which will take effect in January 2004. The current arsenic MCL of 50 micrograms per liter (ugll) was set by the United sates Public Health Service in 1943 and has not been reduced in nearly 60 years. Arsenic has been linked to various types of cancers, prompting EPA to change the standard. Due to the fact many water systems, especially small water utilities serving less than …

Weak States And Political Constraints: Experiments With Truth In Liberia And Sierra Leone, Robert Collins Painter May 2009

Weak States And Political Constraints: Experiments With Truth In Liberia And Sierra Leone, Robert Collins Painter

Political Science Honors Projects

Focusing on truth and reconciliation commissions in Liberia and Sierra Leone, this thesis examines which political conditions typical of weak states had the greatest impact in deciding the different levels of success between the two cases. Two conditions played a central role in determining each commission’s success: the de-legitimization of the state and political fragmentation. Their presence in Sierra Leone derailed that truth commission’s efforts to carry out its mandate. Conversely, their absence in Liberia allowed its commission to operate relatively free of political impediments, leading to greater success.

Curating American Culture: Architectural Representation Through The World’S Fairs, Erin L. Wencel May 2009

Curating American Culture: Architectural Representation Through The World’S Fairs, Erin L. Wencel

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Within the culture I have grown up in, most building types possess and conform to a standard. The standard has an aesthetic appearance, a certain scale, and possibly the most

relevant at this time, a predetermined place in society. Schools, fast food restaurants and homes are identifiable at a level far from an architectural standpoint. Thus, the designer is prompted with a range of decisions from conformation to innovation. Most of the people within these cities accept and favor the sense of familiarity. Conclusions and arguments form why our culture is inclined this way [comfort, control, societal hierarchy], and to …

Phasic Edge, Toby D. Olsen

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Costal architecture in the 21st Century carries an inherent concern with regard to its future viability as global sea levels are inching higher. Costal cities and urban infrastructure around the world will face the prospect of being uninsurable, unsaleable, and uninhabitable. From an architectural and sustainable standpoint, abandonment of coastal cities, infrastructure, and property is an unthinkable solution to a very real problem. Perhaps an even more dismal forecast includes the possibility of mil-lions of climate refugees and their respective loss of local cultures. This project aims to call attention to a very real threat facing this generation of emerging …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Globalization is shrinking the world. This is bringing about dynamic possibilities for information, service and intellectual property exchange. This shrinking and leveling of the globe will usherin ideas and services from areas of the world that add new exciting perspectives to ideas of collaboration, design and technology.

While Architecture has embraced the periphery of revaluating space and even cyber-space with BIM, outsourcing, exchange hubs, cyber-conferencing and plan exchange systems it still lacks the opportunity for a larger pool of ideas and collaboration which, in the long run will only diminish the Architects ever shrinking influence in the built environment. To …

Modelling Optimal Location For Pre-Hospital Helicopter Emergency Medical Services, Nadine Schuurman, Nathaniel Bell, Randy L'Heureux, Syed M. Hameed May 2009

Modelling Optimal Location For Pre-Hospital Helicopter Emergency Medical Services, Nadine Schuurman, Nathaniel Bell, Randy L'Heureux, Syed M. Hameed

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Increasing the range and scope of early activation/auto launch helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) may alleviate unnecessary injury mortality that disproportionately affects rural populations. To date, attempts to develop a quantitative framework for the optimal location of HEMS facilities have been absent. METHODS: Our analysis used five years of critical care data from tertiary health care facilities, spatial data on origin of transport and accurate road travel time catchments for tertiary centres. A location optimization model was developed to identify where the expansion of HEMS would cover the greatest population among those currently underserved. The protocol was developed using …

Augustus, Justinian, And The Artistic Transformation Of The Roman Emperor., Zachary Scott Rupley May 2009

Augustus, Justinian, And The Artistic Transformation Of The Roman Emperor., Zachary Scott Rupley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis project is to discuss and describe the transformation of the image of Roman Emperor through artistic representation and cultural demonstration. The ultimate goal is to determine why the presentation of the office changed so greatly. I have selected certain works of art depicting the first Roman Emperor, Gaius Octavian Caesar, best known as Augustus, and Justinianus, the greatest Roman Emperor. More than 500 years separates these two men, whose only connection, at first sight, is that both served as Roman Emperor. I will analyze each piece of art, discuss its history, determine what each piece …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Crime Rates In American Colleges And Universities With And Without Residential College Systems., Mavis Winona Fleenor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the residential college system to determine if there was any association between campus crime and the residential house system. The specific problem of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the residential college system in mitigating campus violence. The intent of this study was to analyze the statistical relationship between crime reports from colleges and universities where on-campus housing was structured into residential colleges or house systems and crime reports from comparable colleges and universities without the residential design. Data collection consisted of a Web-based nationwide survey conducted annually by …

A Quantitative Study Of School Characteristics That Impact Student Achievement On State Assessments And Those Assessments' Associations To Act Scores In Tennessee., Phillip L. Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a significant relationship exists between particular home, student, and school characteristics and ACT scores and the relationship these characteristics subsequently have with the TVAAS grades assigned to each high school's ACT scores. These home, student, and school variables were socioeconomic status, percentage of minority, graduation rate, per-pupil expenditure, Gateway English II scores, and Gateway Algebra I scores. By looking at these variables and the influence they hold on the education of students, I sought to ascertain the fairness that is present when schools and districts are given grades through the TVAAS …

A Study To Explore The Strategy Of Field-Based Teacher Preparation: Professional Development Schools., Connie Wright

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of my study was to determine if there are any differences in performance measures of student teachers with varying levels of participation in professional development schools. The population in my study was the 2002 through the spring of 2006 kindergarten through 6th-grade student teachers from a small, private postsecondary institution. A requirement of the teacher education program was to complete sequential, field-based experiences in kindergarten through 6th-grade schools culminating in student teaching. My study included kindergarten through 6thgrade student teachers who had experienced a number of semesters in a Professional Development School (PDS) classified into 4 levels: (a) …

John Dewey, Historiography, And The Practice Of History., Seth J. Bartee May 2009

John Dewey, Historiography, And The Practice Of History., Seth J. Bartee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

John Dewey was America's foremost authority on many of the critical issues in the twentieth century. Dewey dedicated his professional career as an expert on the major branches of philosophy.

A neglected aspect of Dewey's philosophy is his writings on historiography, the philosophy of history, and his influence on American historians. Dewey affected several generations of historians from the Progressive historians to the practical realists of today.

This study evaluates Dewey's pragmatism as a legitimate strain in American historiography. James Harvey Robinson and Charles Beard claimed Dewey as an influence. Later historians such as Richard Hofstadter and Joyce Appleby insist …

Impacts Of Climate Change And Urban Development On Water Resources In The Tualatin River Basin, Sarah Praskievicz May 2009

Impacts Of Climate Change And Urban Development On Water Resources In The Tualatin River Basin, Sarah Praskievicz

Dissertations and Theses

Potential impacts of climate change on the water resources of the Pacific Northwest of the United States include earlier peak runoff, reduced summer flows, and increased winter flooding. An increase in impervious surfaces, accompanied by urban development, is known to decrease infiltration and increase surface runoff. Alterations of flow amount and pathways can alter water quality through dilution or flushing effects. I used the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS) modeling system to investigate the relative importance of future climate change and land use change in determining the quantity and quality of …

A Review Of Endemic Species In The Eastern Arc Afromontane Region: Importance, Inferences, And Conservation, Carl Skarbek

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

The Eastern Arc mountain region has been identified as one of the top 25 biodiversity “hotspots” worldwide, and contains a large proportion of endemic species. The endemic species are invaluable resources. This review paper will explore and discuss the possible theories behind the high rate of endemism. The importance of these endemics to local peoples and to the greater global community has been studied thoroughly, and these results are presented in further detail in this paper. The Eastern Arc is also facing many problems that are threatening the biodiversity and rare endemic species of this region. Human expansion into natural …

The Biogeography Of Plant Domestication, Alese M. Colehour May 2009

The Biogeography Of Plant Domestication, Alese M. Colehour

Macalester Reviews in Biogeography

Ranging between 11,000 and 4,000 years ago, several independent origins of agriculture appeared, though scholars disagree on exactly how many. This period, known as the “Neolithic Revolution” or the “Origins of Agriculture,” marks the initial emergence of food production economies. Archaeologists and biologists have worked alongside one another, often using a biogeographical approach, to investigate the origins of useful species, their range expansion, and genetic evolution through analyzing remains found at excavation sites around the world. Plant communities influence patterns in human behaviors and by understanding trends in biogeography we can begin to answer questions such as: Why did plant …
