Recent Paleoenvironmental Changes Recorded In Three Non-Anadromous Lakes In Southwest Alaska: Effects Of Climatic And Vegetation Dynamics On Lake Productivity, Brian R. Cohn May 2009

Recent Paleoenvironmental Changes Recorded In Three Non-Anadromous Lakes In Southwest Alaska: Effects Of Climatic And Vegetation Dynamics On Lake Productivity, Brian R. Cohn

Marine Biology

"Paleolimnological investigations, landscape analyses, and repeat photographs were used to provide a long-term view (~150 yrs. BP to present) of nutrient dynamics and lake ecosystem change in southwest Alaska. Recent major changes in lake ecology and landscape are generally attributed to climate warming since the end of the Little Ice Age and to the recent warm phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Disturbances driven by climate, glacial retreat, and volcanism also contribute to changes in aquatic-driven processes. Sediment cores reveal a complex yet progressive set of changes that are expressed in the study lakes. Changes in the biogeochemical proxies began …

Holocene Vegetation And Climate Change At Canyon Lake, Copper River Basin, Alaska, Grant Shimer May 2009

Holocene Vegetation And Climate Change At Canyon Lake, Copper River Basin, Alaska, Grant Shimer

Geosciences

"The regional vegetation response to Holocene warming and the recession of glacial Lake Atria is recorded by environmental proxies in cores from Canyon Lake, near the northern limit of the Copper River Basin. Pollen, spores, plant macrofossils, and stable isotope analyses of C, N and H indicate that conditions in the northern margins stabilized fairly quickly following the recession of Lake Atria around 10740 cal yr BP. The development of a shallow lake ecosystem surrounded by Betula (birch) shrub-tundra was followed by the migration of Picea (spruce) and Alnus (alder) into the Copper River Basin around 9800 cal yr BP …

Epiparasitism In Phoradendron Durangense And P. Falcatum (Viscaceae), Clyde L. Calvin, Carol A. Wilson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Phoradendron, the largest mistletoe genus in the New World, extends from temperate North America to temperate South America. Most species are parasitic on terrestrial hosts, but a few occur only, or primarily, on other species of Phoradendron. We examined relationships among two obligate epiparasites, P. durangense and P. falcatum, and their parasitic hosts. Fruit and seed of both epiparasites were small compared to those of their parasitic hosts. Seed of epiparasites was established on parasitic-host stems, leaves, and inflorescences. Shoots developed from the plumular region or from buds on the holdfast or subjacent tissue. The developing endophytic …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study aims at answering questions pertaining to the performance of bilingual Arab-American students on solving word problems written in their home and school languages: (1) Does the language in which a word problem is stated have an effect on the performance of the bilingual Arab-American students?; (2) Do Arab-American students with higher levels of Arabic proficiency perform better in either or both versions of the word problems?; and (3) What are some common differences and similarities in the problem solving processes of Arab-American students as they solve problems in English or Arabic? The study used both quantitative and qualitative …

Effects Of Air Temperature And Lake Ice On Snowfall On The South Shore Of Lake Superior, Angela Pelkie Maki May 2009

Effects Of Air Temperature And Lake Ice On Snowfall On The South Shore Of Lake Superior, Angela Pelkie Maki

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Lake Superior is a forcing factor for local weather systems, causing substantial amounts of lake effect snow in the winter (particularly on the south shore). This study assesses decreasing ice cover of Lake Superior and its effects upon synoptic weather factors. Data were collected from eleven National Weather Service (NWS) stations located on the south shore of the lake. Rainfall and snowfall amounts from December to May were regressed on percent ice coverage and average monthly temperatures from 1972-2002. Ice coverage and average monthly temperature had a negative relationship with snowfall and rainfall.

I Am What I Say I Am: Racial And Cultural Identity Among Creoles Of Color In New Orleans, Nikki Dugar May 2009

I Am What I Say I Am: Racial And Cultural Identity Among Creoles Of Color In New Orleans, Nikki Dugar

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the generational changes in the culture and racial self-identification of Creoles of Color of New Orleans. This study argues that the key to understanding Creole culture is the role that isolationism has played in its history. While White ethnics pursued a path of assimilation, Creoles of Color pursued a path of isolationism. This path served them well during the Jim Crow era, but it suddenly became undesirable during the Black Power era. Now, however, new values of multiculturalism have resurrected Creole identity as a cultural asset.

Trinkets Left By Katrina: How Changes To New Orleans' Landscape Have Led To Personal Attachment, Brandie Shauntelle Mitchell May 2009

Trinkets Left By Katrina: How Changes To New Orleans' Landscape Have Led To Personal Attachment, Brandie Shauntelle Mitchell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Humans have an innate tendency to attach themselves to objects on their cultural landscape. After a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina, people seem to hold on to objects left behind by the disaster. This paper examines several of the concepts and reasons as to why attachments may have formed to objects left on New Orleans' landscape after Hurricane Katrina. I explored human reactions after a natural disaster, and discussed how memories, collective and individual, often lead to personal attachment to objects. In an attempt to get a better understanding of this phenomenon, 250 surveys were distributed to residents in the …

Multitemporal Imagery Based Analysis Of Urban Land In St. Tammany Parish In Conjunction With Socioeconomic Data, Jeffrey Joseph Varisco May 2009

Multitemporal Imagery Based Analysis Of Urban Land In St. Tammany Parish In Conjunction With Socioeconomic Data, Jeffrey Joseph Varisco

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The role of urbanization in the history of civilization is a profound and intricate part of human geography. By utilizing socioeconomic data and then integrating it with more technological innovations, such as remote sensing, the spread of sprawl and the urban corridor can better be mapped and quantified by researchers. Many different types of socioeconomic data were implemented in addition to the remotely sensed data. In this paper, six Landsat 5 TM images were used to create land cover classification maps of the developed or built-up land in St. Tammany Parish from 1984 to 2008. It was found that, in …

Israel's Transboundary Water Disputes, Philip A. Baumgarten May 2009

Israel's Transboundary Water Disputes, Philip A. Baumgarten

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

As water is necessary to the function of life, it is imperative to understand the role of water in the politically turbulent Middle East. This paper will focus on Israel’s water disputes with her neighbors and how such disputes have either led to military confrontation, have been partially resolved, and otherwise continue to exist. As populations in the region are expected to increase, the need for water, already in short supply, will be magnified. Thus negotiations to settle water disputes and provide for equitable distribution of the water resources will become more contentious. This legal analysis of Israel’s water disputes …

Scientific Divers Quantify First Known Outbreaks Of Cold-Water Coral Disease, J Hall-Spencer, C Munn, K Hiscock

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coral diseases are widely reported in the tropics but the first incidence of cold-water coral disease was not noted until 2002 when divers recorded an outbreak at 10-28 m depth off Lundy in a NE Atlantic marine protected area. The seafan Eunicella verrucosa exhibited coenchyme necrosis and subsequent diving surveys of >600 colonies at 13 sites since revealed that disease outbreaks were widespread in SW England to depths of 50 m from 2003-2008, possibly caused by infection by Vibrio bacteria at high temperatures.

Atlas Of Anchorage Community Indicators, Robert H. Langworthy, Shel L. Flexman-Evans, Sharon Chamard, Alan R. Mckelvie, Donald Yunker

Series 4: Atlas of Anchorage Community Indicators (2006; 2009)

The Anchorage Community Indicators (ACI) project is designed to make information (extracted from data) accessible so that conversations about the health and well-being of Anchorage may become more completely informed. Policy makers, social commentators, service delivery systems, and scholars often stake out positions based on anecdotal evidence or hunches when, in many instances, solid, empirical evidence could be compiled to support or challenge these opinions. The Atlas of Anchorage Community Indicators makes empirical information about neighborhoods widely accessible to many different audiences. The initial selection of indicators for presentation in the Atlas was inspired by Peter Blau and his interest in …

Relationships, joy in learning, and fair testing are enabling of success within the community and culture studied. In terms of challenges and needs---parents are often named as the biggest barrier to success; secondly, having time to teach as well as possible; …

Zoned Out: Conflict And Perceived Threat In A Rural-Urban Fringe Area, Jennifer Chambers May 2009

Zoned Out: Conflict And Perceived Threat In A Rural-Urban Fringe Area, Jennifer Chambers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Zoning and other restrictive land use policies are quite common in the United States and are frequently enacted as a response to the rapid growth and change within a city or county. Past research on zoning has primarily examined the positive and negative consequences of zoning ordinances, often focusing the analysis on neighborhood change. This study inductively examines the conflict that emerged in one county when new zoning ordinances were proposed through an in-depth analysis of nearly 300 newspaper forums, observations of three public hearings, and interviews with key informants. Concerned with activists on both sides of the zoning issue, …

Qualitative data collection methods involving teacher interviews and analysis of classroom handouts were utilized to reveal how they address plagiarism. Demographic statistics about the communities and schools was examined to enable comparisons between the schools and the participants. The research questions guiding this study were: (a) What are secondary English teachers' perspectives on plagiarism, and (b) What are secondary English teachers' practices on plagiarism. Data were collected and analyzed for any patterns, extremes, or relevancy to the related literature. Then …

Community Social Status Effects On Migration Outcomes, Mark Gerald Middleton May 2009

Community Social Status Effects On Migration Outcomes, Mark Gerald Middleton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using the geocoded version of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), this study examines patterns of internal migration in the United States by investigating individual residential mobility between low socioeconomic and high socioeconomic counties. Specifically, through the use of data between the years of 1979 and 2002, this study asks three questions. First, if the sending community is socioeconomically different than the receiving community where the migrant lives during middle age, does this show upward, downward or lateral status movement? Second, do migrants tend to move from less desirable communities to communities with higher socioeconomic standards of living? …

Mapping Subjectivities: The Cultural Poetics Of Mobility & Identity In South Asian Diasporic Literature, Aparajita De May 2009

Mapping Subjectivities: The Cultural Poetics Of Mobility & Identity In South Asian Diasporic Literature, Aparajita De

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My dissertation examines fiction and autobiography by diasporic South Asian women writers to analyze the processes of subject formation in the diaspora. Analyzing the literary expressions of Jhumpa Lahiri, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Shauna Singh Baldwin, and Meena Alexander on contemporary diasporic identities, I examine the critical insights they offer to understanding subjectivity. I argue that subjectivity in the diaspora develops in response to the individual's experience of location. By location I refer to both physical and ideological spaces the individual occupies over time. Examining subjectivity in the diaspora as an analytical and empirical category, I focus on the tactics and …
