University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies
The Love Library print reference collection provides access to information essential to the instructional, research, and service programs of the University community. It integrates with the library electronic reference collection and operates according to principles stated in the University Libraries Reference Collection Development Policy. As a result it primarily contains items preferred in print because of cost, availability, use patterns, ease of use, archival needs, completeness, need for official text, need for cumulative data, delays in the publication of electronic versions, or instability of online sources. The Love Library print reference collection offers general reference materials and supports the curricula …
The Effects Of Supplemental Educational Services On Student Achievement, Regina F. Miller
The Effects Of Supplemental Educational Services On Student Achievement, Regina F. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Supplemental educational services (SES) are a core component of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) that provide free academic assistance in reading, language arts and mathematics for eligible students. Supplemental educational services include tutoring and other educational interventions that align with the state's academic content standards provided outside of the regular school day. Despite four years of supplemental services educational and millions of dollars spent, little is known about the effects of SES on student achievement. This study hypothesized that after the sixth month of SES tutoring, students in the experimental group would achieve higher scores on …
Does A Mayor Make A Difference In A City’S Economic Performance? The Case Of Akron, Ohio, Edward W. Hill
Does A Mayor Make A Difference In A City’S Economic Performance? The Case Of Akron, Ohio, Edward W. Hill
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Can a mayor make a difference in a city’s long-term economic performance? Mayors have been observed making a difference in case studies and in press accounts but it is nearly impossible to link the economic performance of a particular city to the actions of a specific mayor. Terms are frequently too short and cause and effect cannot be disentangled. The term of Akron’s Mayor Donald Plusquellic offers an opportunity to make the connection. The mayor’s length of service is long, data are available, and comparable cities and metropolitan areas exist to act as informal controls for other structural explanations for …
An Investigation Of Teachers' Perceptions Of School Psychologists, Noelle Bisinger
An Investigation Of Teachers' Perceptions Of School Psychologists, Noelle Bisinger
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate public school teachers' general knowledge and perceptions of school psychologists. This research examined 144 Kindergarten to 12th grade teachers' familiarity and interaction with school psychologists. Self-reported measures of school psychologists' helpfulness, performance, and general knowledge of school psychologists' duties and responsibilities were evaluated. Information pertaining to teachers' specialization, employment history, student population characteristics, and school size were also considered. It was hypothesized that years of teaching experience, teacher type (whether special or general education), and school population size would effect the ratings of school psychologists on all three subscales. A few significant …

Ethnomedical And Biomedical Health Care And Healing Practices Among The Rathwa Adivasi Of Kadipani Village, Gujarat State, India, Margaret A. Karnyski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Rathwa of Kadipani village are adivasi (original inhabitants, tribe) residing in a rural part of Gujarat State, India. Primarily farmers, the Rathwa live in an area where development-related projects, such as mineral mining and damming on the Narmada River, are increasingly impacting their livelihood, health status, and quality of life. The local economy is impacted by uncertainty regarding access to water from the Narmada River, concerns related to the extraction of minerals from a mine in Kadipani, and economic issues that arise when the primary wage earner of the household becomes ill.
This dissertation addresses Rathwa health care practices, …
Determinants Of International Long-Distance Eldercare: Evidence From Ghanaian Immigrants In The United States, Stephen Kodwo
Determinants Of International Long-Distance Eldercare: Evidence From Ghanaian Immigrants In The United States, Stephen Kodwo
Theses and Dissertations
Studies of Ghanaians who have immigrated to the United States indicate that both economic and emotional support continue to be provided to non-migrant families in Ghana. However support to “family relatives” has been studied generally, without specifying age. Thus, relationships between immigrants and their elderly relatives, particularly those who may be frail and vulnerable, have not been the focus of previous research. In addition, it is necessary to examine the dynamics that shape attitudes towards elderly people, and which in turn influence eldercare patterns among Ghanaian immigrants. Based on the literature, the researcher identified four factors relevant to international long-distance …

Does Unemployment Decrease Cancer Mortality?, Benjamin Torres Galick
Does Unemployment Decrease Cancer Mortality?, Benjamin Torres Galick
Economics Honors Projects
Recent research indicates that healthier lifestyles during recessions decrease the most common U.S. mortalities, but not cancer. However, they combine specific cancer mortalities with different progressions into one, possibly obscuring cancer’s link to unemployment. This paper estimates a fixed-effects regression model on unemployment and the nine most prevalent cancers between 1988 and 2002 using state-level panel data. Five cancers and total cancer are procyclical, and suggest that unemployment affects both incidence and gestation for some cancers. Consistent with the medical literature, this paper contradicts previous economic research and suggests that behavioral factors significantly impact cancer mortality.

New World, New War: Understanding Global Jihad, Kabir Sethi
New World, New War: Understanding Global Jihad, Kabir Sethi
Political Science Honors Projects
Scholars tend to explain contemporary conflicts by referring to ambiguously defined processes of globalization. Given this conceptual vacuum, I build a theoretical model that explains the transformation of war through a rigorous analysis of globalization from multiple temporal perspectives. This Braudelian model, which examines the warfighting paradigm, the social mode of warfare, and the historical structure of war, is then used to explain globalist radical Islam. My findings indicate that the emergence of global network societies has had a profound, transformative effect on jihadist violence and, more broadly, on the global mode of warfare.

The Problem With Eating Money: Remittances And Development Within Senegal's Muridiyya, Rebecca F. Sheff
The Problem With Eating Money: Remittances And Development Within Senegal's Muridiyya, Rebecca F. Sheff
Political Science Honors Projects
Contemporary development theory is poorly equipped to understand remittance-based development occurring in transnational spaces that partially escape the control of the state. An extended case study of the Muridiyya, a Sufi brotherhood in Senegal, reveals how collective remittances from Mouride transmigrants become tools for community-level development when channeled through transnational religious associations. I argue that remittance-based development projects transform the political, economic, and social contexts in which they are embedded, including the relationship between the Muridiyya and the state. Development theory must be reconceptualized to account for how remittance-based development defies conventional understandings of the scales of economic and social …

An Overview Of Historical Beaver Management In Arizona, Christopher D. Carrillo, David L. Bergman, Jimmy Taylor, Dale Nolte, Patrick Viehoever, Mike Disney
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
In the mid-1820s, Anglo-American fur trappers, known as "mountain men," entered Arizona and began trapping beaver (Castor canadensis). In Arizona there have been a number of famous mountain men such as Sylvester and James Pattie, Ewing Young, Jededia Smith, and Bill Williams who trapped along the waterways in northern and southern Arizona. Although the heyday of mountain men lasted only a few decades due to a population decline of beaver, management of these animals continues to this day. The purpose of managing beavers shifted from monetary gain to controlling wildlife damage. During the late 1900s, beaver were still …

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv-Related Knowledge And Risky Behavior In Young Females In Jamaica., Christine E. Chung
At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv-Related Knowledge And Risky Behavior In Young Females In Jamaica., Christine E. Chung
Geography Honors Projects
Young females are at three times higher risk of contracting HIV than their male counterparts in Jamaica. Using Jamaica’s 2004 Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviour and Practices survey, this research investigates factors contributing to HIV/AIDS-related risky behaviors of young females. Risk perception as a function of knowledge and as an influence on behavior is also examined. The findings reveal that only older females, 25 to 49 years, practice safer behaviors in response to increased knowledge. This highlights the disjunction between knowledge and behavior, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to addressing the social context within which adolescents are put at risk.
Refugees, Hiv/Aids And Access To Medical Care: A Case Study Of Cairo, Egypt, Anna Popinchalk
Refugees, Hiv/Aids And Access To Medical Care: A Case Study Of Cairo, Egypt, Anna Popinchalk
Geography Honors Projects
Urban refugees in Egypt are at high risk for HIV/AIDS because of the lack of adequate health resources, social stability and the intense stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS. Based on a literature review and semi-structured interviews conducted in Cairo, Egypt, this paper uses a vulnerability perspective to examine the challenges facing HIV-positive refugees in accessing necessary medical care. The combination of policy, structural forces and social relations results in a chain of causation that marginalizes refugees in Egyptian society. These social processes results in unequal access to health resources for refugees, thereby increasing their potential exposure to HIV transmission. This …
“The Bus Stops Here”: Place-Making And Transit Justice Issues In The Twin Cities Public Bus Network, Megan A. Macpherson
“The Bus Stops Here”: Place-Making And Transit Justice Issues In The Twin Cities Public Bus Network, Megan A. Macpherson
Geography Honors Projects
This project engages the formation of place-narratives within the Metro Transit bus system by examining the structural factors and individual agents shaping a passenger’s experience of the bus. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, I bring together the literatures of transportation geography, and cultural/feminist geographies. Major themes from my research include the bus as a theater of performance/theater of conflict, the bus as a gateway to public life for those with limited mobility, and the bus as a relational space for specific passenger groups. Additionally, this project explores the significance of place within transit justice work in the Twin Cities. I …

Blood Knot, William Nicholas White
Blood Knot, William Nicholas White
Theses and Dissertations
This collection of original poetry is preceded by a critical introduction that details how Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop’s similar aesthetics in poetry have influenced my own. The following poems focus on themes that challenge the nature of “manhood,” particularly the archetype of Southern masculinity, and highlight characters who struggle to understand themselves, their desires, and their society. The critical essay tracks how Bishop’s personifications, as she grows as a poet and as her narrator’s “drive into the interior” of nature, become harder to define and control and how this loss of control precipitates a jubilant self-awareness—an awareness of the …
Campus Emergency Evacuation Traffic Management Plan, Di Wu
Campus Emergency Evacuation Traffic Management Plan, Di Wu
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis was motivated to simulate the evacuation traffic of Mississippi Stated University (MSU) main campus using the Path-Following logic of TSIS/CORSIM and to evaluate a set of traffic management plans. Three scenarios of traffic management plans were developed and tested. A NCT of 123 minutes was projected if evacuate without any plan. In comparison, under a pre-planned traffic management plan the NCT would decrease to 39 minutes. Further, if implement contra flow the NCT would reduce to 21 minutes. If even further adjust the signal timing plans at the university exits a NCT of 20 minutes would be achieved. …
Educational Counter Culture:Motivations, Instructional Approaches, Curriculum Choices, And Challenges Of Home School Families, Kenneth Vance Anthony
Educational Counter Culture:Motivations, Instructional Approaches, Curriculum Choices, And Challenges Of Home School Families, Kenneth Vance Anthony
Theses and Dissertations
This project is a case study on the vertical and horizontal occupational structures of physical therapy and how gender attitudes on opportunities can influence one’s workplace satisfaction. The theoretical perspective is based upon a gendered organizational theory and organizational justice operating in a latent manner through gendered opportunities on workplace satisfaction. Horizontal segregation (location and specialty) has been linked to gender essentialism, while vertical hierarchy (work continuity, earnings, and supervisory duties) has also been linked to male primacy. Workers’ perceived attitudes about opportunities for women (promotions and jobs) can potentially influence the outcome of job satisfaction. The 2004 Physical Therapy …

Strategies To Encourage And Support The Reluctant Middle School Male Reader, Wendy L. Poppema
Master of Education Program Theses
Studies (Lee, Grigg, & Donahue, 2007) show that girls outperform boys on reading tests and that boys, especially older boys, are less likely to read for enjoyment in and out of school (Scholastic, 2008). Societal pressure, lack of literacy skills, and lack of motivation are all obstacles that contribute to these findings. In order to raise test scores and the level of reading engagement, teachers, parents, and librarians need to connect these reluctant male readers with books and other reading material that they want to read. Boys prefer non-traditional texts, and though fiction is not a preference, boys crave certain …
