Transmaturities: Gender Trouble As Tentative Analogue For Maturity Trouble, Diederik F. Janssen Jul 2009

Transmaturities: Gender Trouble As Tentative Analogue For Maturity Trouble, Diederik F. Janssen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Recent contributions to queer studies have been marked by what can provisionally be called a turn toward time, specifically time's various normative condensations around issues of community formation, most notably with respect to the family and the subculture. While the specter of time often seems suspended between elite contemplation and public imagination, the emergent rubric of temporalities, explored in GLQ's special issue (2007;13/2-3), announced a possibly radical moment in which genders can be analyzed as breaking down "over time" politically and taxonomically, perhaps to the effect that deconstructive momentum realized in the context of gender/sexuality may facilitate …

2008 Nebraska Population Report, David Drozd

Past Publications

This report shows annual estimates of the population for Nebraska and its counties and cities. Demographic patterns and trends, including changes in the components of population change, are illustrated. As the passage of time takes us further from Census 2000 and closer to the 2010 Census, it is important to see how official estimates show the specific changes that have been occurring at both the state and local level.

Managing Strategic Competition With China, Phillip C. Saunders Jul 2009

Managing Strategic Competition With China, Phillip C. Saunders

Strategic Forums

Officials in the Obama administration have highlighted the need for a “positive, cooperative, and comprehensive relationship” with China that can help the United States address an array of global challenges. Administration officials have not adopted the “responsible stakeholder” language that characterized recent U.S. China policy, but their overall approach appears compatible with that concept. Initial policy statements have focused on expanding U.S.-China cooperation, with particular emphasis on addressing the global economic crisis and climate change.

U.S.-Mexico Defense Relations: An Incompatible Interface, Craig A. Deare Jul 2009

U.S.-Mexico Defense Relations: An Incompatible Interface, Craig A. Deare

Strategic Forums

The United States and Mexico share a history that was shaped in the 19th century by numerous interventions by U.S. forces into Mexican territory and U.S. expropriation of considerable Mexican land. Although largely forgotten on the northern side of the border, this history has left a scar on the collective national psyche of Mexico, most notably on the military forces.

Summer 2009: Caring For Creation, St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Magazine 2007-2012

A sustainable future rests in our hands

Institutions like St. Norbert College, dedicated to the furthering of research and the education of future generations, take seriously their responsibility to teach by word and example how we might meet the Earth’s need for gentler living.

On the cover: Wherever the Norbertine order has sent them, its members have looked for ways to meet the needs of the community around them. The charism of the order itself, consistent with Catholic social teaching, calls for a careful stewardship of the earth. No surprise, then, that environmental education and sustainability is such a natural …

How Many Plaintiffs Are Enough? Venue In Title Vii Class Actions, Piper Hoffman Jul 2009

How Many Plaintiffs Are Enough? Venue In Title Vii Class Actions, Piper Hoffman

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article critiques the recent rash of federal district court opinions holding that all named plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit alleging employment discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 must satisfy the venue requirements in the court where they filed the action. Neither the text nor the history of Title VII requires this prevailing interpretation; to the contrary, requiring every named plaintiff to satisfy venue requirements in the same court undermines the legislative purpose behind both Title VII and Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23 by creating a new obstacle to employees seeking to enforce …

See No Evil: Applying A Labor Lens To Prostitute Organizing, Monica R. Moukalif Jul 2009

See No Evil: Applying A Labor Lens To Prostitute Organizing, Monica R. Moukalif

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This Note examines labor organizing efforts of marginalized labor and, based on that examination, formulates a theory of what the author call "margins-organizing." It then applies that theory to the labor organizing efforts of sex workers. It argues that whatever one's feelings are about sex work itself, the separate work of labor organizing is as similar to and as valid as that of other marginalized workers. The hope is that by bringing sex workers within the margins-organizing lens, that group will be better able to form ties with, learn from, and teach other marginalized labor groups. Part I introduces the …

Healers And Helpers, Unifying The People: A Qualitative Study Of Lakota Leadership, Kem M. Gambrell Jul 2009

Healers And Helpers, Unifying The People: A Qualitative Study Of Lakota Leadership, Kem M. Gambrell

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this critical grounded theory qualitative study was to explore Lakota Leadership from a Native perspective. Interviews were conducted with enrolled members of a Lakota tribe in an urban setting as well as on the Rosebud reservation to gain better awareness of leadership through a non-mainstream viewpoint. Previously, in order to understand leaders and followers, research limited its scope of discernment to dominant society, implying that non-mainstream individuals will acquiesce, or that differences found are inconsequential. Leadership scholars also have implied that leadership theory is “universal enough”, and can be applied globally regardless of influences such as race, …

War, Peace, And The Landscape Of The Inka Heartland, Terence N. D'Altroy, Darryl A. Wilkinson Jul 2009

War, Peace, And The Landscape Of The Inka Heartland, Terence N. D'Altroy, Darryl A. Wilkinson

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article argues that the conservation of cultural heritage in the Inka imperial heartland must move beyond the protection of discrete archaeological sites to encompass the broader landscape, which includes intangible elements such as social memory, power dynamics, and historical narratives. The authors advocate for a holistic approach to heritage management that integrates the physical environment with the cultural and historical contexts that give landscapes their significance.

Disciplines, Institutions And The Performance-Based Research Fund: The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning From A New Zealand Perspective, Deborah Willis Jul 2009

Disciplines, Institutions And The Performance-Based Research Fund: The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning From A New Zealand Perspective, Deborah Willis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: At the heart of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) lies a desire by many in higher education to recognise the centrality of learning and, more particularly, establish teaching as a valid scholarly activity associated with its own epistemology, rigorous methods and peer review process (Kreber, 2007). The role of teaching as a means to facilitate learning is widely recognised through the research literature and institutional policies. SoTL as an emerging field is increasingly diverse although terminology still causes debate (Kreber, 2007).

Place-Making As Contemplative Practice, Douglas E. Christie Jul 2009

Place-Making As Contemplative Practice, Douglas E. Christie

Theological Studies Faculty Works

In an age of chronic and widespread displacement, the work of place-making—the discovery and cultivation of a sense of place—has gained new significance and meaning. In this essay, I propose to consider how place-making can be understood as a form of contemplative practice. Anthropologist Keith Basso describes place-making as a work of “retrospective world-building” that enables a person or community to see a place in all its richness and complexity and hold that place in the imagination. Following the work of photographer Robert Adams, I want to suggest that what makes this work contemplative in character is the integration and …

Real-Time Socio-Economic Data For Travel Demand Modeling And Project Evaluation, Kevin M. Ford, Jon D. Fricker Jul 2009

Real-Time Socio-Economic Data For Travel Demand Modeling And Project Evaluation, Kevin M. Ford, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Small and medium-sized communities often lack data that are complete, current, representative of the community, and appropriate for the travel demand models/software to be applied. To aid such communities, this research was conducted to meet the following objectives:

(1) Identify and facilitate the communication of data that is updated more frequently than the Decennial Census for Indiana Travel Demand Models;

(2) Allow the use of cross-classification techniques within trip generation for planning organizations that lack the time and resources to conduct travel demand/household surveys;

(3) Evaluate the sensitivity of travel demand model outputs to varied parameters and inputs so as …

Using Geographically Weighted Regression Models To Analyze Crash Harm, Libin Zheng Jul 2009

Using Geographically Weighted Regression Models To Analyze Crash Harm, Libin Zheng

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Society pays a high cost for collisions in terms of property damage, injuries and loss of life. This paper has two objectives. One is to examine various factors associated with harm caused by highway collisions. Both global OLS and local GWR models are provided to identify specific variables influencing crash harm. Another objective is to demonstrate the use of a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method in this complex safety problem, which can estimate models for each crash location and show spatial variation. The results show that the GWR model is a significant improvement on the OLS model; the test for …

Permanent Electronic Access To Government Information: A Study Of Federal, State, And Local Documents., Claudene Sproles, Angel Clemons Jul 2009

Permanent Electronic Access To Government Information: A Study Of Federal, State, And Local Documents., Claudene Sproles, Angel Clemons

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Even before the conception of electronic-only documents, providing permanent public access to government information was challenging. Since 1813, federal depository libraries have acquired and maintained tangible items to ensure continued access for the public. Fugitive documents, or government-produced information which escapes distribution through the Federal Depository Library System (FDLP), have always been a major concern. In our current environment, where the vast majority of government information is distributed electronic-only, this problem has only worsened. That, coupled with the ability to completely destroy electronic documents with the click of a mouse, has made the task of finding and ensuring permanent public …

Muddy Waters: Congressional Consent And The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Resources Compact, Sonya Ziaja Jul 2009

Muddy Waters: Congressional Consent And The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Resources Compact, Sonya Ziaja

All Faculty Scholarship

After nearly a century of negotiations among the Great Lakes states, tribes, and provinces, a promising new agreement was recently ratified by the parties and recognized by Congress, this is the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact ("GLC"). Interstate compacts, like the GLC, may serve as a particularly useful tool for solving regional environmental problems which the federal government lacks the interest to resolve. However, due to constitutional strictures, interstate compacts are not binding unless Congress grants consent to the compact. This Note will focus on the GLC as a means to examine the current state of the …

Transnational Legal Practice 2008, Laurel S. Terry, Carole Silver, Ellyn Rosen, Carol A. Needham, Jennifer Haworth Mccandless, Robert E. Lutz, Peter D. Ehrenhaft

All Faculty Scholarship

The current financial turmoil shaking the world illustrates the connectedness of national markets and economies. Legal practice is no exception: lawyers and their firms are experiencing the upheaval along with their clients.1 This has resulted in new opportunities for lawyers and firms–in bankruptcy and restructuring and, likely in the future, in regulatory advising as well–and, at the same time, in substantial challenges. The promise of benefits from a diversified practice–in terms of both substance and geography–is being tested as lawyers and law firms follow their clients through the uncertainties of the current economic conditions.

As law firms cut the size …

A Sophisticated Library Search Strategy Using Folksonomies And Similarity Matching, William Lund, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera Jul 2009

A Sophisticated Library Search Strategy Using Folksonomies And Similarity Matching, William Lund, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera

Faculty Publications

Libraries, private and public, offer valuable resources to library patrons. As of today the only way to locate information archived exclusively in libraries is through their catalogs. Library patrons, however, often find it difficult to formulate a proper query, which requires using specific keywords assigned to different fields of desired library catalog records, to obtain relevant results. These improperly formulated queries often yield irrelevant results or no results at all. This negative experience in dealing with existing library systems turn library patrons away from library catalogs; instead, they rely on Web search engines to perform their searches first and upon …

The Corruption Enigma: Understanding Success And Failure Of Corruption Reform Programs In Highly Corrupt Countries, Matthew T. Hall Jul 2009

The Corruption Enigma: Understanding Success And Failure Of Corruption Reform Programs In Highly Corrupt Countries, Matthew T. Hall

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

There exists a corruption enigma. Experts and analysts largely agree on the institutional reforms that constitute successful corruption reform programs—this is the 'Corruption Consensus.' Unfortunately, the well-designed and resourced reform programs created from this consensus and intended to improve national institutional capabilities rarely work. Yet the reform programs patterned on the Corruption Consensus continue on. Everyone agrees what to do in order to reform corruption but everyone also agrees that it will not work. This is the Corruption Enigma.

This dissertation employs a structured, focused analysis to determine the reasons for varying success levels between otherwise similar countries in order …

Managing The Jakarta Megalopolitan: Quo Vadis?, Irfan Ridwan Maksum Jul 2009

Managing The Jakarta Megalopolitan: Quo Vadis?, Irfan Ridwan Maksum

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The choice of institutional development for Jakarta as Indonesian capital city can be the barometer of equity and fairness as value to whole developing nation, especially for urban development in Indonesia. If megalopolis concept proposed by Sutiyoso received without reverse, then we have disease to the equity and fairness values as a nation state. Megalopolis is a city characterized by: (1) huge population and density; (2) national and international networking scale; (3) huge integrated spatial. The problematic situation of urban development in Jakarta is urgent, but it is un-fair and unequal if development of other cities in Indonesia is abandoned. …
