Managing The Jakarta Megalopolitan: Quo Vadis?, Irfan Ridwan Maksum Jul 2009

Managing The Jakarta Megalopolitan: Quo Vadis?, Irfan Ridwan Maksum

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The choice of institutional development for Jakarta as Indonesian capital city can be the barometer of equity and fairness as value to whole developing nation, especially for urban development in Indonesia. If megalopolis concept proposed by Sutiyoso received without reverse, then we have disease to the equity and fairness values as a nation state. Megalopolis is a city characterized by: (1) huge population and density; (2) national and international networking scale; (3) huge integrated spatial. The problematic situation of urban development in Jakarta is urgent, but it is un-fair and unequal if development of other cities in Indonesia is abandoned. …

Is The World Flat Or Spiky For Immigrant Entrepreneurs Creating Social Capital?, Ruth Clarke, Ramdas Chandra Jun 2009

Is The World Flat Or Spiky For Immigrant Entrepreneurs Creating Social Capital?, Ruth Clarke, Ramdas Chandra

HCBE Faculty Presentations

This study uses social capital theory and strategic entrepreneurship theory to examine the extent to which Hispanic immigrant entrepreneurs create and employ social capital in their firms. Using a modified instrument created by the World Bank to measure social capital, we evaluate the amount and different dimensions of social capital possessed by a sample of 62 mid to small-sized entrepreneurs in a limited geography within the U.S. We find low levels of social capital among our respondents. To the extent that social capital exists, the majority of it seems to be derived from Hispanic sources rather than non-Hispanic sources. Further, …

Integration With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Quantitative Reasoning Program Development, Nathan D. Grawe, Carol A. Rutz Jun 2009

Integration With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Quantitative Reasoning Program Development, Nathan D. Grawe, Carol A. Rutz

Numeracy

As an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor, quantitative reasoning (QR) risks falling through the cracks between the traditional “silos” of higher education. This article describes one strategy for developing a truly cross-campus QR initiative: leverage the existing structures of campus writing programs by placing QR in the context of argument. We first describe the integration of Carleton College’s Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge initiative with the Writing Program. Based on our experience, we argue that such an approach leads to four benefits: it reflects important aspects of QR often overlooked by other approaches; it defuses the commonly raised objection that QR is …

The study revealed that although financial concerns impacted the educational outcomes, there was …

Team Formation In A Network, Markus Kinateder Jun 2009

Team Formation In A Network, Markus Kinateder

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Two project leaders (or entrepreneurs) in a network, which captures social relations, recruit players in a strategic, competitive and time-limited process. Each team has an optimal size depending on the project’s quality. This is a random variable with a commonly known distribution. Only the corresponding project leader observes its realization. Any decision is only observed by the involved agents. The set of pure strategy Sequential Equilibria is characterized by giving an algorithm that selects one equilibrium at a time. An agent’s expected payoff is related to his position in the network, though no centrality measure in the literature captures this …

Sovereign Wealth Fund Investment Patterns And Performance, William L. Megginson, Bernardo Bortolotti, Veljko Fotak, William Miracky Jun 2009

Sovereign Wealth Fund Investment Patterns And Performance, William L. Megginson, Bernardo Bortolotti, Veljko Fotak, William Miracky

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This study describes the newly created Monitor-FEEM Sovereign Wealth Fund Database and discusses the investment patterns and performance of 1,216 individual investments, worth over $357 billion, made by 35 sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) between January 1986 and September 2008. Approximately half of the investments we document occur after June 2005, reflecting a recent surge of SWF activity. We document large SWF investments in listed and unlisted equity, real estate, and private equity funds, with the bulk of investments being targeted in cross-border acquisitions of sizeable but non-controlling stakes in operating companies and commercial properties. The average (median) SWF investment is …

The Investment Strategies Of Sovereign Wealth Funds, Josh Lerner, Shai Bernstein, Antoinette Schoar Jun 2009

The Investment Strategies Of Sovereign Wealth Funds, Josh Lerner, Shai Bernstein, Antoinette Schoar

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper examines the direct private equity investment strategies across sovereign wealth funds and their relationship to the funds’ organizational structures. SWFs seem to engage in a form of trend chasing, since they are more likely to invest at home when domestic equity prices are higher, and invest abroad when foreign prices are higher. Funds see the industry P/E ratios of their home investments drop in the year after the investment, while they have a positive change in the year after their investments abroad. SWFs where politicians are involved have a much greater likelihood of investing at home than those …

The Complexities Of Measuring Access To Parks And Physical Activity Sites In New York City: A Quantitative And Qualitative Approach, Andrew R. Maroko, Juliana A. Maantay, Nancy L. Sohler, Kristen L. Grady, Peter S. Arno Jun 2009

The Complexities Of Measuring Access To Parks And Physical Activity Sites In New York City: A Quantitative And Qualitative Approach, Andrew R. Maroko, Juliana A. Maantay, Nancy L. Sohler, Kristen L. Grady, Peter S. Arno

Publications and Research

Background Proximity to parks and physical activity sites has been linked to an increase in active behaviors, and positive impacts on health outcomes such as lower rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. Since populations with a low socio-economic status as well as racial and ethnic minorities tend to experience worse health outcomes in the USA, access to parks and physical activity sites may be an environmental justice issue. Geographic Information systems were used to conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of park accessibility in New York City, which included kernel density estimation, ordinary least squares (global) regression, geographically weighted (local) …

The Impact Of Literature Circles On Reading Comprehenson In A Fourth Grade Class, Richard L. Kaufmann Jun 2009

The Impact Of Literature Circles On Reading Comprehenson In A Fourth Grade Class, Richard L. Kaufmann

Theses and Dissertations

In a fourth grade class where the majority of students were reading below grade level, literature circles were introduced and monitored for their ability to (a) raise student motivation to complete class work, (b) improve student interaction and behavior, and (c) raise Fountas and Pinnell reading comprehension levels. Students' class work in the literature circles was compared to similar work from whole group instruction. A rubric measured the attentiveness and behavior of the students in literature circle, whole group, and small group settings. The study was bookended by two Fountas and Pinnell benchmark reading assessments that were compared for signs …

Leadership Development For Elementary Students, Krista Ullestad Jun 2009

Leadership Development For Elementary Students, Krista Ullestad

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Leadership development among elementary aged students is an essential part of character building and moral maturity. Based on the premise that the promotion of authentic leadership development in young students occurs infrequently in most school systems, this author articulates strategies to include effective leadership exploration in a safe, elementary school environment. The researcher (a) identifies a variety of definitions of leadership, (b) lists the characteristics of quality leadership, (c) suggests a process for developing young student leaders, and (d) provides insight into the future impact of early leadership training. The results include: (a) leadership standards to guide classroom instruction, (b) …

Embedding Climate Change In The Curriculum, John Willott Jun 2009

Embedding Climate Change In The Curriculum, John Willott

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

Climate change presents significant scientific, technical, ethical and political challenges. Attitudes to climate change are a function of tradition and culture, and the prevailing discourses in society and the media. Educators have a key role in understanding these attitudes and promoting behavioural changes. However, the transdisciplinary nature of the issues can present a problem for staff and students alike. While it is relevant to many, or most, areas of the curriculum, traditional discipline and organisational boundaries, and the knowledge, skills and educational history of both staff and students, can prevent engagement. Examples include teaching the concepts in non-science courses, engaging …

Rural Livelihoods And Vulnerability To Climate Hazards In Ningxia, Northwest China, Yue Li, Yanjuan Wu, Declan Conway, F. Preston, Erda Lin, Jisheng Zhang, Taoming Wang, Yi Jia, Qingzhu Gao, Shifeng, Hui Ju

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

This study addresses how climate affects the livelihoods of people living in agricultural communities in Ningxia, one of the five autonomous regions in China. The analysis formed part of a vulnerability assessment to contribute to the development of an adaptation strategy for the region. Data were collected through questionnaires and focus group discussions in nine villages, three located in each of three different agro-ecosystems in the region. The survey results showed that drought has been a major hazard impacting rural livelihoods. Farmers in all three agro-ecosystems showed differing levels of vulnerability; susceptibility was higher, for instance, in the middle arid …

Climate Change And Heatwaves : China’S Responsibility Before The Poor Elderly, José Azoh Barry Jun 2009

Climate Change And Heatwaves : China’S Responsibility Before The Poor Elderly, José Azoh Barry

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

OBJECTIVE: To address the extent of China’s obligation toward the elderly – a growing segment of the population -- as more vulnerable to heat waves.

METHOD: Data handled are secondary and derived from a non-exhaustive review of a specialized scientific literature. The search for relevant publications was conducted from a multidisciplinary perspective.

RESULTS: Of the various sources of human influences on climate, two major ones related to heat waves appear to be urban designs and greenhouse gas emissions. The urban heat islands effects as local anthropogenic impacts on climate increase the need for air conditioning and demand for power consumption …

Land Use And Climate Change : Effects And Solutions At The Local Level, Mark Henderson Jun 2009

Land Use And Climate Change : Effects And Solutions At The Local Level, Mark Henderson

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

China is likely already seeing the effects of climate change. Further effects in the form of increased temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and rising sea levels could be catastrophic, making action at all levels an urgent priority. While much attention is rightfully paid to reducing carbon emissions from fossil fuels, land management practices account for as much as a quarter of the net increase in greenhouse gasses. In China, urbanization is the most important and tractable phenomenon affecting the landscape, reducing carbon sequestration, as well as locking in transportation patterns that assume increasing fossil fuel use into the future. Developing systems …

Climate Change In Hong Kong : Observations And Projections, Edwin W. L. Ginn, T. C. Lee, K. Y. Chan Jun 2009

Climate Change In Hong Kong : Observations And Projections, Edwin W. L. Ginn, T. C. Lee, K. Y. Chan

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

The Hong Kong Observatory has been making meteorological observations at its headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui since 1884. Analysis of the extensive past records reveals that the temperature rise in Hong Kong during the past 125 years is in accord with the global rising trend. In last few decades anthropogenic influences, especially urbanization, have contributed significantly to the accelerated rising trend. A similar increasing trend is also observed for rainfall but the trend after 1947 is not statistically significant. Other observations such as increasing cloud amounts, decreasing total global solar radiation and rising sea level are all consistent with the …

Economic Valuation Of Forest Ecosystem Services: Methodology And Monetary Estimates, Aline Chiabai , Chiara Travisi, H. Ding, Anil Markandya, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes Jun 2009

Economic Valuation Of Forest Ecosystem Services: Methodology And Monetary Estimates, Aline Chiabai , Chiara Travisi, H. Ding, Anil Markandya, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

By using ad hoc value transfer protocols, this paper offers a methodological contribution and provides accurate per hectare estimates of the economic value of some selected ecosystem services for all forest biomes in the world, identified following the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment taxonomy MEA. The research also estimates potential total economic losses from policy inaction in year 2050. Final results show that total losses are significant. The total figure is €78 billion, the greatest losses coming from North America and Mexico, followed by Africa, Russia and some Asiatic countries. Most of this loss is attributable to provisioning services and carbon sequestration, …

The Right To Equal Aspirations And The Obligation To Be Different, As A Basis For A Common Future, Olivia Bina Jun 2009

The Right To Equal Aspirations And The Obligation To Be Different, As A Basis For A Common Future, Olivia Bina

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

By virtue of its sheer size and growth trajectory, China knows it cannot be ignored. The question is whether it can offer leadership in terms of greater responsibility, both towards its own people and the rest of the world. The climate change crisis is the ultimate expression of unsustainable patterns of growth. Based on this perspective of the climate change debate, I explore the theme of responsibility as traditionally focused around the need to limit emissions, but also in terms of the obligation to pursue development aspirations through a different path. I consider the argument that China’s leadership has an …

The Chinese [Climate] Box : A Scalar Approach To Evaluating Ethical Obligations In Climate Strategies For China, Erich W. Schienke Jun 2009

The Chinese [Climate] Box : A Scalar Approach To Evaluating Ethical Obligations In Climate Strategies For China, Erich W. Schienke

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

Assuming that all nations have the ethical obligation to reduce emissions to their global fair share, this paper investigates how distributive and procedural justice obligations, under the broader rubric of Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change program, play out across various political and ecological scales in China. As China is such a large and necessary player in any global strategies for addressing climate change, it is imperative that the nation receive closer ethical investigation across scales and sectors, and that other nations and multi-national corporations do their fair share in helping China's various regions and sectors reach its obligations in a …
