A Comparison Of The Achievement Test Performance Of Children Who Attended Montessori Schools And Those Who Attended Non-Montessori Schools In Taiwan, Hsin-Hui Peng

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are two purposes of the current study. First was to examine whether or not children in the elementary school in Taiwan who had received Montessori early childhoodEducation obtain significantly higher scores on tests of language arts, math, and social studies than children who attended non-Montessori pre-elementary programs. Second one was to examine whether or not the number years of MontessoriEducation has a positive impact on the students' scores when they are in elementary grades. According to Chattin-McNichols (1992b), children from MontessoriEducation program are doing better in some respects than other programs. Some studies have found that in the United …

The Culture Industry, Hip Hop Music, And The White Perspective: How One Dimensional Representation Of Hip Hop Music Has Influenced White Racial Attitudes, Walter Edward Hart Jan 2009

The Culture Industry, Hip Hop Music, And The White Perspective: How One Dimensional Representation Of Hip Hop Music Has Influenced White Racial Attitudes, Walter Edward Hart

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

This theoretical study builds from Ben Agger's theory in his 1992 book, Cultural Studies as Critical Theory:The ideological outcomes of the culture industry are in a sense unintended; they emerge in the interplay of authorial, directorial, and audience assumptions about the nature of the world. (Agger 1992:65)I theorize the effect of the culture industry's cycle of assumptions on the one-dimensional representation of hip hop music and its reflection and reinforcement of Whites' perceptions of Blacks and Black Culture. The reinforcement of Whites' historically negative racial attitudes emerge unintended through a complex cycle of assumptions between the director (culture industry), the …

On Rereading Klaus Theweleit's Male Fantasies, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D., Daniel Krier Jan 2009

On Rereading Klaus Theweleit's Male Fantasies, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D., Daniel Krier

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Klaus Theweleit's Male Fantasies has generated broad interest in the literature of several academic disciplines. His analysis of the symbolic and gender dynamics of the leaders of the German Freikorps (German paramilitary mercenary units of the period 1918-1923) has been widely generalized into a theory of modern masculinity. Two issues inadequately explored in Theweleit's work nonetheless must be read through more recent empirical and theoretical work in history and sociology: (1) the formative role of colonial military experience in the careers of the German Freikorps officers who provide the material for his analysis and (2) the complex historical problem of …

Discouragement Amongst Ageing Workers In Malta Within An Eu Context, Brown, Michael Briguglio Jan 2009

Discouragement Amongst Ageing Workers In Malta Within An Eu Context, Brown, Michael Briguglio

Societies Without Borders

This paper investigates perceptions of unemployed ageing workers in Malta, in relation to disadvantages in the labour market and to discouragement with regard to chances of finding stable employment. The principal results are that educational level and number of breadwinners in one's household significantly affect perceptions; and that there are cases manifesting the 'discouraged worker effect', even though they are still registering to find employment. This challenges traditional views arguing that this effect is present only among individuals who already gave up the job search completely. This paper concludes that the struggle for productive employment requires mass representation of trade …

Stress, Status, And Sociability: Exploring Residential Satisfaction In The Rural Midwest Following Rapid Immigration, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Amy E. Boren Jan 2009

Stress, Status, And Sociability: Exploring Residential Satisfaction In The Rural Midwest Following Rapid Immigration, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Amy E. Boren

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This investigation examined predictors of residential satisfaction among newly arrived residents (NAR) and long-term residents (LTR) of a rural community following a rapid influx of immigrants into the community. The physical environment, social/cultural aspects of life, and resources and public services were hypothesized to affect perceptions of residential satisfaction. Both LTR and NAR were pleased with environmental attributes, sociocultural attributes, and public services. An inverse relationship was revealed between stress and residential satisfaction. The primary sources of stress for LTR related to economics and social status issues, whereas the primary sources of stress among NAR involved issues concerning family and …

A Comparative Study Of Organisational Commitment Of Bank Employees In Ireland And China, Helen Chen Jan 2009

A Comparative Study Of Organisational Commitment Of Bank Employees In Ireland And China, Helen Chen

Conference papers

Organizational commitment is a complicated concept. However it is primarily regarded as an attitudinal construct dealing with the perceived utility of continued participation in the employing organization (Hrebriniak & Alutto, 1972). In a similar vein, it has also been described, according to Buchanan, (1974), as a partisan, affective attachment to the goals and values of an organization, to one’s role in relation to goals and values of an organization, and to the organization for its own sake; or according to Porter et al. (1974), as a strong belief in and acceptance of the organization’s goals and values, a willingness to …

Characterisation Of Chitosan Solubilised In Aqueous Formic And Acetic Acids, E.A. El-Hefian, A.H. Yahaya, M. Misran

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The intrinsic viscosity of chitosan (MW 7.9 x 10(5) g mol(-1)) having a high degree of deacetylation and solubilised in aqueous formic and acetic acids was determined at room temperature. Contact angle and conductivity of the chitosan solutions were also studied. The values of critical coagulation concentration (CCC) were then obtained from the plots of contact angle or conductivity versus concentration.

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The genus Xylocarpus, belonging to the family Meliaceae is distributed in the tropics including mangrove habitat from Africa to Australia, Malaysia and India (Ridley, 1922). It is usually associated with Avicennia, Excoecaria, Acanthus, Rhizophora, Bruguiera,Sonneratia, Nypa and Ceriops. There are three species of Xylocarpus in Malaysia namely, Xylocarpus granatum, X. mollucensis and X. rumphii. They are considered important endangered mangrove species in Malaysia. X. granatum, commonly known as nyireh bunga, is important economically for wood carving. The inner bark is a source of dye for tanning, the oil from seeds is used for grooming hair, the fruits and seeds are …

Cultural Characteristics Of Western Educational Structures And Their Effects On Local Ways Of Knowing, Cheryl L. Woolsey Des Jarlais Jan 2009

Cultural Characteristics Of Western Educational Structures And Their Effects On Local Ways Of Knowing, Cheryl L. Woolsey Des Jarlais

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This critical ethnography is a study of how the interfaces between Western educational structures and Native cultural structures function in the daily operations of a privately owned school in a Native community, how these functions have evolved, drawbacks and strengths of both Western and Native cultural structures, and current challenges in relating to the mixtures of philosophy, value systems and socialization expectations of these systems.

The review of literature exposed a variety of assumptions regarding individualism, bureaucratization, homogenization, universalism, meritocracy, and rationalization reflected in Western educational structures. The study done at Valley Grove Mission School illuminated the assumptions and expectations …

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Responses To Biochars In Soils - Potential Mechanisms Of Interaction And Observed Responses In Controlled Environments, Daniel Warnock Jan 2009

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Responses To Biochars In Soils - Potential Mechanisms Of Interaction And Observed Responses In Controlled Environments, Daniel Warnock

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The following thesis is a two-part study, investigating the influences of biochar (charcoal) on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The first part of this study is a critical examination and conceptual overview of the literature regarding biochar and AMF available before July 2007. In the second part, I present three experiments all designed to evaluate the influences of biochar applications on AMF abundance in primarily temperate, neutral pH soils. This course of research was selected through an exstensive review of the literature suggesting that biochar presence can strongly affect both soil microbial populations, including mycorrhizal fungi, and biogeochemistry. As both biochar …

Teacher, Leadership, And Curriculum Factors Predictive Of Student Achievement In Indian Education For All, Erin Robin Lipkind Jan 2009

Teacher, Leadership, And Curriculum Factors Predictive Of Student Achievement In Indian Education For All, Erin Robin Lipkind

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study examines the teacher, leader, and curriculum variables predictive of student achievement in Indian Education for All (IEFA). IEFA, a Montana educational mandate based on Montana constitutional law, was first funded in 2005, and little research had previously been conducted on the effectiveness of implementation efforts. While compulsory, implementation had been piecemeal and wrought with misunderstanding, differences in opinion, prejudice, and questions about its legitimacy. The challenges inherent in the implementation of an ambiguous educational reform with no state-adopted curriculum or benchmarks for student achievement have become evident. With the dearth of research, it was not known how well …

Beetles, Frogs, And Lawyers: The Scientific Demarcation Problem In The Gilson Theory Of Value Creation, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2009

Beetles, Frogs, And Lawyers: The Scientific Demarcation Problem In The Gilson Theory Of Value Creation, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Recently, Ronald Gilson described a transactional lawyer turned law professor as someone who was a beetle, but became an entomologist. This is not the first non-mammalian metaphor used by an economically inclined legal academic to demarcate those who study and those who are studied. As Richard Posner so colorfully explained rational actors as they appear to economists studying them objectively: "it would not be a solecism to speak of a rational frog." In this short essay, I suggest that both say something about the prevailing view of theorizing that is entitled to privileged epistemic status in the legal academy. Some …

Water And The Mountains: Maya Water Mangement At Caracol, Belize, James Crandall Jan 2009

Water And The Mountains: Maya Water Mangement At Caracol, Belize, James Crandall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water management techniques in the Southern Maya Lowlands are both regionally diverse and site specific. This thesis examines the water management strategies of the Classic Period Maya at the site of Caracol, Belize. While it is likely that elites at Caracol controlled the redistribution of resources, i.e. craft and agricultural products, it is probable that the production of agricultural resources and the maintenance of water resource acquisition took place on a more local level. In order to test this hypothesis, a sample of five reservoirs were examined through original research -- and situated in conjunction with past settlement studies -- …

No Child Left Behind?: The Relationship Between Education Policy And Student Success, Brittany Resmann Jan 2009

No Child Left Behind?: The Relationship Between Education Policy And Student Success, Brittany Resmann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated how education policy influences student success, and if there are linkages between K-12 education policy and higher education. Historically, education has primarily been a function of state and local governments. The role of the federal government drastically changed with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. This thesis focused on the influence of No Child Behind on several indicators of student success in K-12 and postsecondary education. All fifty states were examined in this study. This approach is rather unusual since it is typical to focus on one state or a small group …

A Culture Of Giving: The Effect Of Activism On Teenage Girls And Their Ability To Investigate Social Change Through Volunteerism, Amanda Settlage Jan 2009

A Culture Of Giving: The Effect Of Activism On Teenage Girls And Their Ability To Investigate Social Change Through Volunteerism, Amanda Settlage

Whittier Scholars Program

My senior project is studying the effects that being involved in community organizations has on teenage girls ages 14-18. My primary focus has been on volunteerism in an activist capacity, especially for social change. This project has been done in a way that argues that volunteerism is positive for girls and their communities. I chose to study teenage girls because I have a broader interest in the effect that being involved in community organization has on women but also because I wanted to look at the lifetime effects of volunteering at a relatively young age. Also, teenagers are among the …

Social Media & Conservation: Creating A Water-Conservation Awareness Campaign On The Whittier College Campus, Juliette Donatelli Jan 2009

Social Media & Conservation: Creating A Water-Conservation Awareness Campaign On The Whittier College Campus, Juliette Donatelli

Whittier Scholars Program

In June 2008, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed an executive order declaring a statewide drought. Water levels continue to drop in reservoirs, like Lake Powell, but demand is rising as population grows. What if the solution to water shortages is not to exploit new water sources, but to educate communities about water conservation? My senior project tests the results of a pre and post-awareness campaign I conducted in the Whittier College community. I recorded the total amount of water used on campus for two months (by looking at the water bills); then I created a series of graphic design posters, …

The Unique Silencer, Christofer Ditscheit Jan 2009

The Unique Silencer, Christofer Ditscheit

Honors Program Theses

For decades people have been puzzled by the sudden drop in voter turnout that occurred in the 1970's and continued through the 1980's and 1990's. The demographics of those voting and not voting have been analyzed repeatedly for some clue as to why people were not turning out in the same numbers. Repeatedly, different factors have been addressed as contributors to the reduction of voter turnout. Studies have found that the United States has a unique factor contributing to the low voter turnout. Even after controlling for socioeconomic and institutional factors, there is something about the United States that has …

Constructed Global Space, Constructed Citizenship, Micky Lee Jan 2009

Constructed Global Space, Constructed Citizenship, Micky Lee

College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works

This article examines the relation between global space and citizenship by examining the cases of WTO meeting and Hong Kong Disneyland. Scholars assert that global space can unsettle naturalised social relations. Yet, an ambiguous and vague sense of citizenship and a neoliberal spatiotemporal frame constrain how the state, the media, and the locals interpret the meanings of space, and how citizenship is manifested in space. In the global space of the WTO meeting and the Hong Kong Disneyland, the Hong Kong Chinese identity is reinforced by demonising South Korean farmers and mainland Chinese.
