East Meets West: Chinese Reception And Translation Of Virginia Woolf, Guanglan Jin Jan 2009

East Meets West: Chinese Reception And Translation Of Virginia Woolf, Guanglan Jin

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation traces the evolution of the Chinese reception of Virginia Woolf through historical contextualization and explores the cultural conflicts in the Chinese interpretation and translation of Woolf with special emphasis on her feminism from a cross-cultural perspective. It also examines Woolf s and Ling Shuhua's critique of the tyrannies in the private world in their autobiographical works. The two stages of the Chinese reception of Woolf parallel those of the western one. The first stage from the early 1930s to the late 1940s may be characterized by so-called "interaction" between the Bloomsbury and Crescent Moon groups. It includes the …

Ritual Rhetoric In Ancient Near Eastern Texts, James W. Watts Jan 2009

Ritual Rhetoric In Ancient Near Eastern Texts, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

Many ancient Near Eastern texts reflect a concern for ritual accuracy. They depict ancient kings justifying their ritual practices on the basis of supposedly invariable tradition and, frequently, on the basis of old ritual texts. They also invoke ritual acts and omissions to explain the course of past history and to promise future punishments and rewards. In fact, very many texts assert that ritual performance is the most determinative factor in the success or failure of rulers and nations. The rhetoric of ritual therefore pervaded royal propaganda as well as temple texts. It also provided the principal rationale for criticizing …

Algal And Cyanobacterial Saline Biofilms Of The Grande Coastal Lagoon, Lima, Peru, Haydee Montoya Jan 2009

Algal And Cyanobacterial Saline Biofilms Of The Grande Coastal Lagoon, Lima, Peru, Haydee Montoya

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Tropical coastal wetland ecosystems are widely distributed in arid regions. The Grande coastal lagoon in Peru's central plain is shallow, eutrophic and alkaline, exposed to the annual hydrological regime with flooding and desiccation periods, when a salt crust is formed. The brackish to hypersaline habitats showed salinity gradients from 2-90 ppt (NaCl) to saturation, pH values from 7.0 to 10.5, temperatures from 18 to 31 C, phosphate concentrations from 0.5 to 50 mg 1-1. Dominance of halophilic biofilms of benthic cyanobacteria followed by diatoms and the submerged macrohpytes Chara hornemannii and Ruppia maritima during the clear water state supported the …

Microbial Communities In Salt Lakes: Phylogenetic Diversity, Metabolic Diversity, And In Situ Activities, Aharon Oren, Bonnie K. Baxter, Bart C. Weimer

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

A roundtable discussion was held on Monday, 12 May 2008, following the sessions on 'Microorganisms in Hypersaline Environments' at the 10th Conference on Salt Lake Research & 2008 FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake Issues Forum, University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Among the aspects discussed were: 1. The gap between our knowledge of the microorganisms isolated in culture and the true microbial diversity as apparent when using culture-independent techniques, in most cases based on the characterization of small subunit ribosomal RNA genes; 2. The metabolic diversity of the microorganisms inhabiting saline and hypersaline lakes and the lack of information to …

An In Vivo Characterization Of The Functional Role Of Two Novel Genes: Stard5 And Adam11, Marc Paul Waase Jan 2009

An In Vivo Characterization Of The Functional Role Of Two Novel Genes: Stard5 And Adam11, Marc Paul Waase

Student Theses and Dissertations

Regulation of cholesterol levels within cells and organisms is crucial for their survival. Maintenance of cellular cholesterol homeostasis occurs mainly at the transcriptional level, via the Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Proteins (SREBP), the Liver X Receptors (LXR), and the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR)/ER Stress Response. This thesis attempts to characterize the in vivo physiological role of novel downstream target genes of these transcription factors: StARD5 and ADAM11. This thesis outlines the development and characterization of a floxed mouse allele of the UPR-upregulated, reticuloendothelial gene StARD5, as well as two different transgenic mouse lines, one which expresses the human StARD5 gene …

Playing In The Prose: Writing Instruction And Underprepared Student-Athletes In Division I-A Universities, Billie S. Hara

English Dissertations - Archive

Playing in the Prose: Writing Instruction and Underprepared Student-Athletes in Division I-A Universities, is a study that contributes to the continuedinterest in the pedagogical tools educators can use with underprepared writers.Student-athletes, especially those at a Division I-A institution are a specializedstudent group particularly when enrolled at a predominantly white institution andparticularly when they are academically underprepared to do the work required ofthem. Drawing from critical and feminist pedagogues Paulo Freire, Ira Shor, HenryGiroux, and Peter MacLaren, along with bell hooks, Susan Jarratt and LynnWorsham, I argue that a feminist version of critical pedagogy, relational pedagogy, envisions a composition classroom as a …

Whose Eyes Are You Going To Believe? Scott V. Harris And The Perils Of Cognitive Illiberalism, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, David A. Hoffman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper accepts the unusual invitation to see for yourself issued by the Supreme Court in Scott v. Harris, 127 S. Ct. 1769 (2007). Scott held that a police officer did not violate the Fourth Amendment when he deliberately rammed his car into that of a fleeing motorist who refused to pull over for speeding and instead attempted to evade the police in a high-speed chase. The majority did not attempt to rebut the arguments of the single Justice who disagreed with its conclusion that no reasonable juror could find the fleeing driver did not pose a deadly risk to …

The Greek Language In The Diaspora/ La Langue Grecque En Diaspora, Anastasios M. Tamis

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Expatriation has been a consistent theme in Greek history since the years immediately after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans (1453) until 1974, when Greece began importing economic migrants and refugees (Tamis, 2005). Greek-speaking communities and clusters of Greek presence were established throughout the world, even in the most remote places. Only recently (post-1974), Greek settlement experience from a socio-cultural and linguistic perspective became a focal point in research for national identity and immigrant studies. During the long periods of settlement in foreign lands, Greek expatriates chose to maintain their ethno-linguistic and religious identity, establishing religious communities and elementary …

International Law In Domestic Courts: A Conflict Of Laws Approach, Karen Knop, Ralf Michaels, Annelise Riles Jan 2009

International Law In Domestic Courts: A Conflict Of Laws Approach, Karen Knop, Ralf Michaels, Annelise Riles

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

The relationship between international law and domestic law is rarely understood as a conflict of laws. Understanding it in this way opens up a parallel with the field of conflict of laws: the field for which the relationship between legal systems, especially the role of another system's jurisdiction, laws, and judgments vis-à-vis the domestic legal system, are exactly the bread-and-butter issues. We argue for such an approach to international law in domestic courts: an approach that we elaborate as "theory through technique."

In our view, conflicts should be seen broadly as the discipline that developed to deal with conflicts between …

A Never Ending Journey: The Impossibilities Of Home In Sirena Selena Vestida De Pena And Flores De Otro Mundo, Irune Del Rio Gabiola Jan 2009

A Never Ending Journey: The Impossibilities Of Home In Sirena Selena Vestida De Pena And Flores De Otro Mundo, Irune Del Rio Gabiola

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Reconsiderations of home have been crucially examined in Caribbean cultural productions. As Jamil Khader argues in her article on “Subaltern Cosmopolitanism: Community and Transnational Mobility in Caribbean Postcolonial Feminist Writings,” Caribbean feminists are faced with the task of challenging a conventional idea of home that has historically located women and other marginal subjects under conditions of oppression and exploitation. In focusing on the narratives by Aurora Levins Morales, Rosario Morales and Esmeralda Santiago, she points out the infinite sense of homelessness that invades, in particular, these Puerto Rican individuals who need to find more productive manners to articulate “home” while …

Knowing More Than They Can Tell: An Assessment Of Genre Awareness Among Students In Writing Intensive Zoology And Civil Engineering Courses, Joleen Kidwell Hanson Jan 2009

Knowing More Than They Can Tell: An Assessment Of Genre Awareness Among Students In Writing Intensive Zoology And Civil Engineering Courses, Joleen Kidwell Hanson

Doctoral Dissertations

Developing genre awareness as a means of "learning how to learn" in new writing situations is a goal of four recently proposed writing pedagogies that recognize the context-dependent nature of standards for "good writing" (Devitt, Reiff, and Bawarshi (2004); Beaufort (2007); Johns (2008); Downs and Wardle (2007)). Yet other scholars argue that useful genre knowledge cannot be taught explicitly in the classroom, but must be acquired tacitly through participation in a workplace or other discourse community (Dias et al. (1999); Freedman (1994); Smit (2004)).

This qualitative study investigates the range of variability and potential sources of genre awareness among undergraduates …

"It's Just Part Of What We Do": Adolescent Interactions With Multimodal Texts Across Social Spaces, Anita S. Charles Jan 2009

"It's Just Part Of What We Do": Adolescent Interactions With Multimodal Texts Across Social Spaces, Anita S. Charles

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores how adolescents are interacting with text across shifting social spaces, and how they learn to be literate across a range of social, academic, print, and digital contexts. The intent of the study is to help articulate the boundedness and fluidity of multiple discourses, and to better clarify how teens maneuver across these boundaries successfully. My research approach incorporates ethnographic methodology with a framework of critical sociocultural theory, drawing heavily upon Gee's (2005) work in discourse analysis.

New technologies have broken down bounded spaces and dichotomous views of what it means to be literate, creating interrelationships among literacies …

Where The Humanities Live, Edward L. Ayers Jan 2009

Where The Humanities Live, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

The humanities play an important role at every kind of institution. Approximately 40 percent of all undergraduate humanities degrees come from large research universities, where they account for about 15 percent of all bachelor's degrees. The United States stands in the top third of the percentage of degrees awarded in the humanities and the arts internationally, ranking with Germany and Denmark. English remains the dominant major, producing about a third of all bachelor's degrees in the humanities, followed by general humanities and liberal studies with 26 percent, and history with 18 percent.

Digital Editions: Scholarly Tradition In An Avant-Garde Medium, Andrew Jewell

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

I come to you from the digital world. I am president of the Digital Americanists; I recently received a Digital Humanities Start-Up grant; I edit a digital archive on the life and work of Willa Cather; I am a faculty fellow at the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities; and I even have the word “digital” in my official job title: Assistant Professor of Digital Projects. I don’t begin this way in order to impress you with my credentials, but as a confession: my current professional identity is absolutely entangled with the digital medium. That said, I want to …

"Separated Unto The Gospel Of God": Political Theology In Badiou And Agamben, Charles Barbour Jan 2009

"Separated Unto The Gospel Of God": Political Theology In Badiou And Agamben, Charles Barbour

Seattle University Law Review

This paper begins with a comparison of two texts: Alain Badiou's Saint Paul: The Foundation of Universalism and Giorgio Agamben's The Time that Remains: A Commentary on the Letter to the Romans. In Parts III and IV, I will summarize in very broad terms the details of Badiou's and Agamben's respective appropriations of Paul. Within each of these Parts, I will speak a little bit about the implications of these various claims for contemporary legal theory-- at least as I understand it, and I am no expert. Finally, in Part V, I will discuss briefly an alternative reading of Paul, …

Stereotypes: Racism And Its Effects On The 2008 Presidential Election And Our Citizens, Mark Anthony Wheeler

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This is such a historic time in our country’s story, due to the reprieve from the usual choice of middle-aged White males in a presidential election. The make-up of candidates’ age, race, and sex in the 2008 primaries and general election, allowed the unique opportunity for multiple stereotypes to be engaged. This was an exploratory qualitative study, relying on descriptive data, participant observation during the general election campaign, and in-depth interviews (N=8) that happened within six months after the election of Barack H. Obama, first African-American elected president of the United States. The purpose of this study is to examine …
