Border Crossings: Transnational Americanist Anthopology, Kathleen S. Fine-Dare, Steven L. Rubenstein Jan 2009

Border Crossings: Transnational Americanist Anthopology, Kathleen S. Fine-Dare, Steven L. Rubenstein

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

For anthropologists and social scientists working in North and South America, the past few decades have brought considerable change as issues such as repatriation, cultural jurisdiction, and revitalization movements have swept across the hemisphere. Today scholars are rethinking both how and why they study culture as they gain a new appreciation for the impact they have on the people they study. Key to this reassessment of the social sciences is a rethinking of the concept of borders: not only between cultures and nations but between disciplines such as archaeology and cultural anthropology, between past and present, and between anthropologists and …

All Our Stories Are Here: Critical Perspectives On Montana Literature, Brady Harrison Jan 2009

All Our Stories Are Here: Critical Perspectives On Montana Literature, Brady Harrison

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

This wide-ranging collection of essays addresses a diverse and expanded vision of Montana literature, offering new readings of both canonical and overlooked texts. Although a handful of Montana writers such as Richard Hugo, A. B. Guthrie Jr., D’Arcy McNickle, and James Welch have received considerable critical attention, sizable gaps remain in the analysis of the state’s ever-growing and ever-evolving canon. The twelve essays in All Our Stories Are Here not only build on the exemplary, foundational work of other writers but also open further interpretative and critical conversations. Expanding on the critical paradigms of the past and bringing to bear …

A Chinese Model Of Leadership Competence, Guo-Ming Chen, Ran An Jan 2009

A Chinese Model Of Leadership Competence, Guo-Ming Chen, Ran An

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter aims to develop a model of leadership competence from the Chinese cultural perspective. In the introduction part, the impact of globalization on human society is discussed to lay down the foundation of the need for developing a model of global leadership competence. In order to examine the Chinese leadership competence, which can be integrated to a more comprehensive model of global leadership competence, the philosophical foundation of Chinese leadership competence is delineated in the second part. Based on the Chinese philosophical thinking, three dimensions of leadership competence, including self cultivation, context profundity, and action dexterity are proposed. Then …

Intergenerational Transmission Of Values In Different Cultural Contexts: A Study In Germany And Indonesia, Isabelle Albert, Gisela Trommsdorff, Lieke Wisnubrata Jan 2009

Intergenerational Transmission Of Values In Different Cultural Contexts: A Study In Germany And Indonesia, Isabelle Albert, Gisela Trommsdorff, Lieke Wisnubrata

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The aim of this study1 is to investigate cultural similarities and differences in the transmission of general and domain-specific value orientations (individualism/collectivism, and value of children) within German and Indonesian families. Supposing that both cultures differ with respect to developmental pathways of independence and interdependence, we asked if the extent of intergenerational transmission of values within families differs between Germany and Indonesia, and we studied possible cultural differences in intergenerational transmission with respect to different value contents. More precisely, we asked if there is a difference in transmission of values that are highly versus not highly endorsed by the members …

South Asian Muslim American Girl Power: Structures And Symbols Of Control And Self Expression, Marcia K. Hermansen, Mahruq F. Khan

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

South Asian Muslim American (SAMA) girls studied ethnographically in Chicago and more broadly in the United States negotiate these three components (South Asian, Muslim, and American) of identity across the spheres of home, Islamic institutions, and the public “American” realm. . Drawing on interviews and fieldwork at an Islamic school and within South Asian families and mosques, the authors illustrate how nascent “girl” power is evidenced in these contexts drawing on media representations, academic sources, and data drawn from participant observation. Sources of SAMA girls’ expressions of confidence and power are selective use of identity markers, increased mastery of Islamic …

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This book is one of several by several authors that grow out of the Culture Matters Research Project of the late 1990s. Mariano Grondona developed the grid of twenty-five elements of culture. A similar approach was developed by the anthropologist Edward T. Hall in his classic study, The Silent Language (1959). Ronald Inglehart has tested data from the World Values Survey and has found considerable correlation to support the Progress Typology about which he written.

Undergraduate Review

Sports media is important because it shapes the perceptions, aspirations and dreams of the viewers (Angelini, 2008). It shows the viewers the skill and athletic achievement of both male and female athletes. The media allows viewers to witness the athletic prowess of their favorite athletes on TV and in print. Within sports media, the viewers are able to learn about the many different sports that are offered around the world. The viewers are able to get a sense about who the athletes are, their talents, their sport and their achievement. It is apparent that sports media has a huge impact …

Engaging Music And Media: Technology As A Universal Language, Glen Carruthers Jan 2009

Engaging Music And Media: Technology As A Universal Language, Glen Carruthers

Research & Issues in Music Education

The ambiguity in the first half of the paper’s title – “Engaging music and media” – is intentional. Music is engaging in the sense that it implicates our hearts and minds. Music can also be engaged by and with media. And, of course, engagement is core to effective learning.

The role of music education is always in flux. Aesthetic aims sometimes take primacy, while at other times music is taught as a means to some other end. As in ancient times, today music is taught largely for its ancillary benefits so that, in a curious twist, ancillary aims have become …

Trying On—Being In—Becoming: Four Women’S Journey(S) In Feminist Poststructural Theory, Donna Kalmbach Phillips, Gennie Harris, Mindy Legard Larson, Karen Higgins

Faculty Publications

This is the narrative of four women in academia spanning a ten-year relational journey. As a performance collaborative autoethnography, it explores and presents theories of subjectivity and transitional space. Through journals, emails, and dialogue we are trying on, being in, and becoming feminist poststructural thinkers/inquirers/teacher educators. In our work, we explore: How has theory changed our subjectivity, lived experiences and relationships, and moved us from comfortable spaces of knowing to uncomfortable places of becoming? In a series of poetry and performance narratives, we chart our own linked journey(s) in pursuing these questions. As autoethnographers, we grapple with meanings …

Chinese Harmony Theory, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2009

Chinese Harmony Theory, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Based on Chen’s harmony theory of Chinese communication, this entry explicated that the ability to reach a harmonious state of human relationship is the main criterion the Chinese use to evaluate communication competence. In order to achieve harmony interactants are required to follow three principles: (1) intrinsically to internalize jen (humanism), yi (righteousness), and li (rite); (2) extrinsically to accommodate shih (temporal contingencies), wei (spatial contingencies), and ji (the first imperceptible beginning of movement); and (3) strategically to exercise guanxi (inter-relation), mientz (face), and power in the behavioral level.

Constructing Rural Geographies In Publication, Verdie Craig, Matthew Kurtz Jan 2009

Constructing Rural Geographies In Publication, Verdie Craig, Matthew Kurtz

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The paper compares American and British scholarship in rural geography. It argues that, among other reasons for the difference in “rural geography” between the two countries, their distinct publication strategies offer insights for potential interventions. To sketch how the field has been differently construed on opposite sides of the Atlantic, the article first examines several sub-disciplinary literature reviews. It then adds a materialist account to a performative perspective of subdisciplinary formation by exploring how the publication industry helped shape distinct relationships between rural geography and theory. We suggest that rural geographers in the US might use new publication strategies to …

"The Boys I Mean Are Not Refined": The Search For Identity In Contemporary American Novels, Jamie Valentine Jan 2009

"The Boys I Mean Are Not Refined": The Search For Identity In Contemporary American Novels, Jamie Valentine

Theses & ETDs

Many contemporary novelists explore a complex notion of identity. In these texts, characters create and recreate their identities, responding to the forces of their social world. I examine J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1945), Sherman Alexie’s Indian Killer (1996) and Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) following their young male protagonists in their search for a sense of identity. This thesis first explores the various strategies and tactics employed by the characters in the process of creating their identity: language, the search for community, sexuality, and violence. The success of each of these …

'The Power Of Your Voice Could Redirect Every Truth': Rap As Resistant Discursive Practice, Alexandra Rogers

Theses & ETDs

The content of this project is guided by this consideration: what tools can we use to understand the strategies of conscious rappers who discuss political issues in their lyrics? Accordingly, in this thesis we aim to investigate the extent to which conscious rap is engaging in a strategy of creating new discourses in order to resist dominant ideas about power in the United States, specifically examining parallels between the rhetorical tactics of rap artists and the idea of resistance proposed by Michel Foucault. Thus, I have chosen to analyze three rap songs that express ideas about power and resistance in …

Crisis Of Confidence: Cinematic Environmentalism Of The Seventies, Jacob Scott Starks Jan 2009

Crisis Of Confidence: Cinematic Environmentalism Of The Seventies, Jacob Scott Starks

Theses & ETDs

In the 1970's, film played a reflective and contributory role in American environmental culture. Many films of the decade reflected a cultural environmentalism driven by a crisis of confidence in government and industry's ability to ensure a viable and natural environment. This project examines six films' content, cultural context of production, and reception, which indicate a notion of American uncertainty concerning government and industry's protection or conservation of the environment. The opening chapter provides a context for the economic and political conditions of the 1970's, explaining the American “crisis of confidence.” The second chapter examines the public‟s lack of faith …

Cellular And Genetic Factors In Traumatic Brain Injury: A Histological Analysis, Christopher Ganey Jan 2009

Cellular And Genetic Factors In Traumatic Brain Injury: A Histological Analysis, Christopher Ganey

Theses & ETDs

Traumatic brain is a growing concern among the general population with debilitating long -term effects. The introduction in the thesis will review other literature on traumatic brain injury to give the reader a brief overview of the topic. I hypothesized that traumatic brain injury has a profound effect on physiological activity. I also hypothesized that there is genetic influence on the outcome of injury as well. I performed histological analyses on brain tissues of mice that have undergone traumatic brain injury experiments at the Roskamp Institute. The results from my analyses have indicated that both traumatic brain injury and genetic …

Europe: A Brief Walking Tour, Melissa Soforic Jan 2009

Europe: A Brief Walking Tour, Melissa Soforic

Theses & ETDs

"Europe: A Brief Walking Tour" is based on a three week trip I took through five countries in summer of 2007. While abroad I kept a journal detailing my experiences and immediate observations; the work in this exhibition stems from observations made in the journal, and is enhanced by my previous studies in foreign language and landscape painting. Classic European landscape paintings by Claude Monet and Claude Lorrain are influential, as are the word images of Ed Ruscha and Barbara Kruger. The character and identity of these foreign locations vary significantly, yet certain similarities are inherent; themes of travel, language, …

Self-Monitoring And Social Desirability As Factors Associated With Discrepancy Between Indicated Type And True Type On The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Katherine Filippi Jan 2009

Self-Monitoring And Social Desirability As Factors Associated With Discrepancy Between Indicated Type And True Type On The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Katherine Filippi

Theses & ETDs

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) consistently indicates the type preferences of the majority of people, but many feel that their "indicated type" (the type preferences as identified by the Myers Briggs Type Indicator) does not reflect their true type preferences. This study examined type discrepancy (the amount of difference between indicated and true type) in relation to social desirability and self-monitoring to determine whether these two forms of self-presentation would predict levels of type discrepancy. College students (N=187) at a small liberal arts college indicated their type preferences using the MBTI and then the Best-Fit Questionnaire (a written measure in …

Effects Of Case-Based Learning On Preservice Secondary Teachers’ Multicultural Attitudes: A Mixed Methods Study, Kathryn Lee, Emily Summers, Rubén Garza Jan 2009

Effects Of Case-Based Learning On Preservice Secondary Teachers’ Multicultural Attitudes: A Mixed Methods Study, Kathryn Lee, Emily Summers, Rubén Garza

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

As our society changes, so must our teacher education practices. In the past decade, the Southwestern U.S. has been transforming into a majority minority region (U.S. Census Bureau 2005), which must in turn reframe the underpinnings of teacher education in this area of our country. As teacher educators, we have known that many preservice teachers lagged in their preparedness to teach students who are culturally, ethnically, and linguistically different from themselves. Teacher education increasingly is being criticized as having inabilities to instruct teacher candidates in ways that produce greater K-12 student learning; diversity awareness will be a cornerstone if we …
