Once Was Lost, Or Turtles All The Way Down, Evan Gribbins

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

These are seven stories set in the rural, Central Kentucky Town of Lebanon. These stories, besides the intermission, may or may not chronicle the life of one young man. They revolve around the young man’s life and friends during his time living in the area and his sense of loss upon his return.

Explanation Of Statistics Used In This Report

Nebraska Swine Reports

Pigs treated alike vary in performance due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effect we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an "equal" group of pigs on each treatment. The natural variability among pigs and the number of pigs per treatment determine the expected variation among treatment groups due to random sampling. At the end of an experiment, the experimenter must decide whether observed treatment differences are due to "real" effects of the treatments or to random differences due to the sample of pigs assigned …

Nutrition During Gilt Development And Genetic Line Affect Reproductive Rate Through Parity 1, Rodger Johnson, Philip S. Miller, Roman Moreno, Matthew W. Anderson, Jeffrey M. Perkins, Kelsey Rhynalds, Trevor J. Glidden, Donald Mcclure, Thomas Mcgargill

Nebraska Swine Reports

Effects of allowing gilts ad libitum access to feed until breeding age or developing them with 25% energy restriction from 123 days of age to breeding on reproductive success through parity 1 were studied with a total of 639 gilts of two lines that differ in lean growth and reproduction. Gilts of the two lines had common sires, an industry maternal line, but dams were from different populations. One line of gilts, LW x LR, represented standard industry Large White x Landrace cross females. The other gilts, L45X, were daughters of Nebraska selection Line 45 that has been selected 27 …

In Vivo And In Vitro Expression Of Porcine Zinc Transporter (Znt) 1 Mrna, Huyen Tran, Phillip S. Miller, Thomas E. Burkey

Nebraska Swine Reports

Preliminary experiments were carried out to evaluate in vivo expression of zinc transporter (ZnT) 1 mRNA in a panel of tissues obtained from weaned pigs and to evaluate in vitro changes in Z n T l mRNA in a porcine jejunal epithelial cell line (IPEC-J2) treated with low (40 yM) or high (80 yM) concentrations of zinc sulphate (ZnSO,) or, in a separate experiment, with low (50 yg/ml) or high (1 00 yg/mL) concentrations of antibiotics (as gentamicin; GENT). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10 ng/mL) was included as a negative control in both experiments. Zinc transporter 1 mRNA was detected in all …

Effect Of Dam Parity On Litter Performance And Passive Immunity, Erin E. Carney, Huyen Tran, Justin W. Bundy, Roman Moreno, Matthew Anderson, Jeffrey Perkins, Philip S. Miller, Thomas E. Burkey Jan 2009

Effect Of Dam Parity On Litter Performance And Passive Immunity, Erin E. Carney, Huyen Tran, Justin W. Bundy, Roman Moreno, Matthew Anderson, Jeffrey Perkins, Philip S. Miller, Thomas E. Burkey

Nebraska Swine Reports

Preliminary experiments (reported in the 2008 Nebraska Swine Report) suggest that progeny health status may be affected by dam parity. However, the preliminary experiments only included a small population of sows and their progeny. Therefore, the objective of the current experiment was to evaluate litter performance and the production and passive transfer of immunoglobulins (Ig) in dams (P1 vs. P4) and their progeny. Litter birth weight tended (P < 0.10) to be greater for P4 progeny compared to P1 progeny. No effects of dam parity were observed on circulating Ig in dams during gestation or at parturition. However, concentrations of IgA tended (P < 0.09) to be greater for P4 sows compared to P1 gilts in samples of colostrum and milk and serum IgG concentrations were greater (P < 0.02) for P4 progeny compared to P1 progeny across all preweaning samples. These results suggest that litter performance and health status may be affected by dam parity.

Selection For Immune Responses To Porcine Circovirus (Pcv2) To Decrease Incidence Of Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (Pcvad), Jared S. Bates, Roman Moreno, Alan R. Doster, Rodger Johnson

Nebraska Swine Reports

Genetic and environmental effects on incidence of Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVAD) and immune responses to Porcine Circovirus 2 (PCV2), and their relationships with body weights were studied in 3,440 pigs of the Nebraska litter size selection lines. Pigs were weighed at birth, weaning, 65, and 180 days of age and scored for symptoms of PCVAD every 10 days from 70 to 180 days of age. Necropsies were performed to confirm accuracy of scoring. PCV2 viremia, and anti bodies to PCV2, Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus, Myco plasma hyopneumoniae and Actino bacillus pleuropneumoniae were measured in serum from blood …

Nebraska’S 8 Great Natural Wonders, Paul A, Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

FOR MANY PEOPLE, Nebraska is part of a large, indefinite segment of the central United States dismissively known as “flyover country,” which is best observed through a jet’s window from at least 30,000 feet and while sipping a cool drink. I like to think of such persons as “flyover people,” who have probably never known, at close range, the wonders of our state’s natural landscapes. In the traditions of those romantic souls who would like to visit the seven natural wonders of the world, I humbly offer my own suggestions for visiting Nebraska’s inherent wonders. They are not ranked in …

Trust & Transparency: Promoting Efficient Corporate Disclosure Through Fiduciary-Based Disclosure, Michael R. Siebecker

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Could embracing the philosophy of “encapsulated trust” as the basis for a fiduciary duty of disclosure improve the integrity and effectiveness of corporate communications? The question arises because a tragedy of transparency threatens the viability of the burgeoning corporate social responsibility (CSR) movement, where consumers and investors employ various social, environmental, or ethical screening criteria before purchasing a company's stock or products. In an efficient market, fully informed consumers and investors could reward companies that engage in CSR by purchasing their products or stock and, conversely, punish companies that fail to engage in desired practices by refusing to purchase their …

Empathy Conditioned Conservation: "Walking-In-The-Shoes-Of-Others" As A Conservation Farmer, Robert Sheeder, Gary D. Lynne

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Since the destruction and despair caused by the dust bowl of the 1930’s, Americans and their government have taken a keen interest in natural resource conservation policy on agricultural land throughout the country. As a reflection of this, the farm bill of 1936 entitled the “Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act” included for the first time provisions that provided payments and support to farmers willing to employ soil conservation measures on their farms (Cain and Lovejoy, 2004). While the main purpose of this bill was to provide financial support to impoverished farmers dealing with low commodity prices, the fact remains …

Addressing Judicial Activism In The Indian Supreme Court: Towards An Evolved Debate, Madhav Khosla Jan 2009

Addressing Judicial Activism In The Indian Supreme Court: Towards An Evolved Debate, Madhav Khosla

UC Law SF International Law Review

The Indian Supreme Court has invited a great deal of interest for its alleged activism and the role that it has begun to play in Indian governance. Recent years have been witness to substantial debate on the Court's functioning, with scholars positing views and raising concerns with considerable passion. This paper analyzes the judicial activism discourse in the Indian Supreme Court by focusing on the contributions of Professor Upendra Baxi. It argues that, despite the attention the Court has received on the question of judicial activism, the debate in this area has, for the most part, failed to engage with …

Of Ants And Elephants: Measuring Student Appreciation For Insects And Charismatic Megafauna During An African Safari, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice Jan 2009

Of Ants And Elephants: Measuring Student Appreciation For Insects And Charismatic Megafauna During An African Safari, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

As part of an International Field Trip in Biology class through the Study Abroad Program at Iowa State University, we had as a goal to impress university students of various academic backgrounds with the insects of the Serengeti region in east Africa. The Matthiessen quote hints at our a priori expectation and main obstacle—wondrous distraction. The promoted goal of the field trip was to educate and expose students to the natural history of northern Tanzania, with a focus on the mammalian and avian fauna, the varied grassland-bushland-montane forest ecosystems, Rift Valley geology, and Maasai culture. The course, conducted during 2005, …

Estrous Synchronization Increases Early Calving Frequency, Which Enhances Steer Progeny Value, D. M. Larson, Richard N. Funston

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Calving records collected between 2000 and 2008 at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, Whitman, NE, were used to determine the effect of estrous synchronization on calving distribution and the impact of time of calving on carcass characteristics. Calves born between 2000 and 2006 resulted from non-synchronized 60 d breeding seasons between 1999 and 2005 (n = 2075). Calves born in 2007 and 2008 resulted from synchronized 45 d breeding seasons in 2006 and 2007 (n = 521). Estrus was synchronized with a single injection of prostaglandin F2α administered 108 h after bulls were turned in with cows. Cow …

The Effect Of Delaying Initial Feedlot Implant On Body Weight, Average Daily Gain, And Carcass Characteristics Of Calf-Fed Steers, W. Griffin, D. C. Adams, R. N. Funston

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of delaying initial feedlot implant on BW, ADG, and carcass characteristics. At receiving, steers were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) implant at feedlot entry (NORM) or 2) implant 30 d after feedlot entry (DELAY). In Exp. 1, steers (n = 200) were not implanted until feedlot entry; however, in Exp. 2 steers (n = 209) were implanted at approximately 50 d of age. In Exp. 1, there was a tendency (P = 0.11) for BW at d 30 to be heavier (10 kg) for NORM compared with DELAY; however, all …

The Effects Of Corn Coproduct Supplementation On Primiparous Cow Reproduction And Calf Performance, D. M. Larson, R. N. Funston

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

An experiment was replicated over 2 yr to determine the effect of additional RUP and dietary fat from dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS; n = 2) or wet corn gluten feed (WCGF; n = 2) before breeding on primiparous cow reproduction and calf production. Over 2 yr, 134 postpartum, primiparous cows (429 ± 5 kg initial BW) were fed 1 of 2 isocaloric, approximately isonitrogenous diets in 1 pen/yr (n = 4) providing varying levels of RUP and dietary fat. Treatments were initiated 21 (yr 1) and 60 d (yr 2) postpartum and continued for 56 (yr 1) or …
