Efficient Maxcount And Threshold Operators Of Moving Objects, Scot Anderson, Peter Revesz
Efficient Maxcount And Threshold Operators Of Moving Objects, Scot Anderson, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Calculating operators of continuously moving objects presents some unique challenges, especially when the operators involve aggregation or the concept of congestion, which happens when the number of moving objects in a changing or dynamic query space exceeds some threshold value. This paper presents the following six d-dimensional moving object operators: (1) MaxCount (or MinCount), which finds the Maximum (or Minimum) number of moving objects simultaneously present in the dynamic query space at any time during the query time interval. (2) CountRange, which finds a count of point objects whose trajectories intersect the dynamic query space during the query time interval. …

Human Dimensions Of Invasive Vertebrate Species Management, Gary W. Witmer, G. M. Keirn, N. Hawley, C. Martin, J. K. Reaser
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Invasive vertebrate species can cause substantial damage to natural resources, property, crops, livestock, and pose a disease hazard to humans, native wildlife and domestic animals. Numerous island species have become extinct or are threatened with extinction from invasive species. The high rate of invasive species introductions continues because of the large volumes of world trade and international travel. Humans are often responsible for introductions, but are also the key to their prevention, management, and eradication. However, many of the values and perceptions of invasive species vary among humans. Hence, the prevention and control of invasive vertebrates often requires adjusting human …

Using Genetics To Assess Differentiation Among Raccoons In An Area With Variable Rabies Status In Alabama, Shylo Johnson, Antoinette J. Piaggio, Melissa Neubaum, Mike Dunbar
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
The western spread of raccoon rabies in Alabama has been slow and even appears to regress eastward periodically. While the disease has been present in the state for over 30 years, areas in northwest Alabama are devoid of raccoon rabies. This variation resulting in an enzootic area of raccoon rabies primarily in southeastern Alabama may be due to landscape features that hinder the movement of raccoons (i.e., gene flow) among different locations. We used 11 raccoon-specific microsatellite markers to obtain individual genotypes to examine gene flow among areas that were rabies free, enzootic with rabies, or had only sporadic reports …

A Field-Test Of Rhodamine B As A Biomarker In Raccoons, Tricia Fry, Tara Baranowski, Brandi Hughey, Mike Dunbar
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Rhodamine B is a dye that when ingested results in fluorescent bands in growing hair and whiskers of many mammals. Previous research at Wildlife Services’ (WS) National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) found that rhodamine B is a successful biomarker in raccoon whiskers and that raccoons do not have a taste aversion to the dye when it comprises ≤ 3% of a bait. Our study assessed the ease of bait distribution, whisker collection, and evaluation of the biomarker for potential use in the Oral Rabies Vaccination (ORV) program administered by the WS National Rabies Management Program (NRMP). In collaboration with WS …

Searching For The Author's Hand: Narrators, Readers, And The Fictive World In Vladimir Nabokov's Short Fiction, Laura Hampton
Searching For The Author's Hand: Narrators, Readers, And The Fictive World In Vladimir Nabokov's Short Fiction, Laura Hampton
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis I explore the various interactions between writing, narrators, and readers in Vladimir Nabokov's short fiction. In the first chapter I discuss "Mademoiselle O," and the narrator's attempt to retrieve the memory of his childhood governess from the past. By weaving detailed memories into a story, the narrator helps anchor her memory in the present, and achieves greater understanding of her character. The theme of writing lives continues in the second chapter on "Recruiting." The narrator tells a detailed story about a man who is actually an invented character, inspired by a stranger the narrator sees on a …
Creation Care: The Construction Of An Evangelical Environmentalism, Chris Toner
Creation Care: The Construction Of An Evangelical Environmentalism, Chris Toner
Theses & ETDs
As climate change becomes a serious political issue in recent decades, dialogue concerning how to address the problem has intensified. The evangelical community has made a surprising entrance into this discussion. Evangelicals have traditionally fought for conservative social causes, and environmentalism has been stereotyped as liberal and secular. The manifestation of an evangelical voice in the discourse has heavy implications for the future of environmentalism and governmental approaches to the issue. However, there has been considerable debate over how “dominion belief,” anthropocentrism, and theological and political conservatism affect environmental attitudes. In the context of this debate, then, what obstacles had …

City, Sweet City: A Study Of The Implementation Of New Urbanism And The Public Process, David A. Banks
City, Sweet City: A Study Of The Implementation Of New Urbanism And The Public Process, David A. Banks
Theses & ETDs
In October of 2007 the city government of Sarasota, Florida embarked on a planning effort called the "Bayfront Connectivity Charrette." Employing New Urbanist design principles, the city employed a contractor to hold an intense four-day design studio. In those four days, hundreds of residents interacted with public officials, professionals, and other residents to come up with a plan for a more pedestrianfriendly US-41 corridor. Through direct observation, document analysis, and follow-up interviews, this thesis tracks the public decision-making process in downtown Sarasota, Florida and asks the general question, "What are the perceptions of individuals' roles in the process; and how …
Form And Function: The Development Of Parks And Monuments In 20th Century United States, Dana Bassett
Form And Function: The Development Of Parks And Monuments In 20th Century United States, Dana Bassett
Theses & ETDs
The difficulties faced by rapidly industrializing cities in the early twentieth-century warranted urban planning that was in a large part inspired by the rural cemetery movement in mid-nineteenth century United States. These scenic cemeteries combined pastoral scenery and commemorative art within the burial grounds to unexpected ends. Urban reformers looked to nature to ease the moral and physical depravity of the urban environment. Public parks allowed people unwelcome in the cemetery to temporarily escape the struggles of city life. Reformers also promoted the neo-classical art and architecture within the cemetery in an attempt to cultivate upright citizens. The proliferation of …

Do Children Who Know More, Care More? Environmental Knowledge And Scope Of Justice, Jennifer Dyer
Theses & ETDs
This study explored a potential correlation between children's environmental knowledge and scope of justice (a measure of attitude, defined here as the amount of fairness deserved by the environment). Thirty 5-7 year olds were interviewed. Participants were divided between two groups: positive utility (primed to think of nature as beneficial to humans) and neutral utility (not primed). Participants were told five stories about human-environment conflicts, each with a low and high conflict version. In the context of the stories, participants decided whether to act in a pro-environmental way, or in a way that benefited humans. Next, a 15-question environmental knowledge …
Over The Counter But Under The Radar: Direct-To-Consumer Genetics Tests And Fda Regulation Of Medical Devices, Lauren B. Solberg
Over The Counter But Under The Radar: Direct-To-Consumer Genetics Tests And Fda Regulation Of Medical Devices, Lauren B. Solberg
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Direct-to-consumer genetic tests are laboratory-developed tests that are marketed and sold directly to consumers. They typically do not require a prescription or any other involvement from a consumer's health care provider. Consumers order these tests online and return a specimen, usually a saliva sample, directly to the laboratory. The results are mailed directly to the consumer, and no health care provider or insurance company need ever learn the contents of these results. The FDA does not currently regulate direct-to-consumer genetic tests, though tests for hundreds of different diseases are readily available to the public.
The FDA's approach to regulating genetic …

Dr. Strange-Rating Or: How I Learned That The Motion Picture Association Of America's Film Rating System Constitutes False Advertising, Jason K. Albosta
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a trade association whose members include film production studios, distributors, and theater chains, administers the most popular system for rating the content contained in the vast majority of publicly exhibited motion pictures in the United States. The stated goal of the rating scheme is to caution parents about any objectionable content that a film contains in order to allow them to make informed decisions about which films they will allow their children to see. While the rating scheme has undergone several changes since its establishment to further its stated goal, a fundamental conflict …

Excerpt: "As professor and scholar of medieval and Renaissance literature, C. S. Lewis wrote and published well-respected and influential literary criticism. At the same time, following his conversion to Christianity around 1930, he felt a duty to apply his argumentative and philosophical skills to the writing of Christian apologetics-defenses of traditional Christian principles against the attacks of skeptics and religious liberals. More important, Lewis lived in an age largely hostile to his attitudes and thought, both in literature and Christianity. In a period that s.aw such startling literary productions as The Waste Land and Ulysses, Lewis chose to defend traditional …
