Reflections On Transpersonal Psychology’S 40th Anniversary, Ecopsychology, Transpersonal Science, And Psychedelics: A Conversation Forum, Mark A. Schroll, Stanley Krippner, Miles A. Vich, James Fadiman, Valerie Mojeiko

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Recollections of humanistic and transpersonal psychology’s origin’s morph into the

pros and cons of humanistic/transpersonal oriented schools developing APA accredited

clinical programs. This discussion dovetails with the question will ATP ever become an

APA division, raising an interesting alternative for those of us considering a career in

counseling: becoming a spiritual coach. Enter the issue of psychedelic therapy and the

Supreme Courts decision to allow ayahuasca as a sacrament by the Uniao Do Vegetal

Church, and the importance of why humanistic and transpersonal psychology need to

clearly map out the territories and sub-divisions of science and religion. Finally this

conversation …

Xenophilia As A Cultural Trap: Bridging The Gap Between Transpersonal Psychology And Religious/Spiritual Traditions, Harris Friedman Jan 2009

Xenophilia As A Cultural Trap: Bridging The Gap Between Transpersonal Psychology And Religious/Spiritual Traditions, Harris Friedman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Xenophilia, seen as a type of romanticism, is proposed as an explanation for the tendency

within transpersonal psychology to privilege so-called exotic religious and spiritual traditions,

as opposed to the xenophobic tendency within mainstream Western psychology of

religion and spirituality to privilege the Judeo-Christian tradition. Claims made in a recent

article published in a major psychology journal that Buddhism does not rest on supernatural

faith and is the most psychological spiritual tradition are challenged as examples of this type

of romanticism. Demographic trends showing conversion rates to Buddhism in the US

are contrasted with conversion rates to Christianity in South …

Oppression Through Sexualization: The Use Of Sexualization In “Going To Meet The Man” And “The Shoyu Kid”, Joe Gorman

Undergraduate Review

In a world of differences and misunderstandings, disparities and distance, there is a seemingly endless myriad of modes by which human beings categorize, segregate, and immobilize each other. History is filled with repeated instances of groups asserting themselves through any necessary means in order to retain dominance and power. In a rather unnerving way, the human race can prove to be quite creative in its tenacity to oppress. Obviously, racism and cultural repression have proven to be weapons of choice time and again. Being of a perhaps more primal and misunderstood nature, sex has also been employed as a tool …

The South Coast Crustacean Fishery. A Discussion Paper., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia Jan 2009

The South Coast Crustacean Fishery. A Discussion Paper., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

Fishing for crustaceans including southern and western rock lobster and deep-sea crab species on the south coast of Western Australia began in the 1960s and has developed significantly through improvements in technology, vessel reliability and the risk and endeavour of some fishers. The expansion in the capacity of the fleet has lead to the development of two managed fisheries.

This paper provides a brief outline of the history of the fishery; details the fishing and management methods presently used; and discusses the options available for future management, particularly ways of limiting fishing effort.

Prawn Aquaculture In Western Australia. Final Esd Risk Assessment Report For Prawn Aquaculture., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

The Western Australian Department of Fisheries is responsible for the management of aquaculture in WA and is committed to implementing ESD. These principles are contained within the objectives of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 and the Department is keen to demonstrate both to the Government and the broader community that these principles are being achieved. The Department developed a policy statement in 2002 - Policy for the Implementation of Ecologically Sustainable Development for Fisheries and Aquaculture within Western Australia - (Fletcher 2002) that described its direction to the Department on incorporating ESD within fisheries and aquaculture management.

Birds Of The Great Plains: Frontmatter, Contents, Preface, Introduction, Paul A. Johnsgard

Birds of the Great Plains (Revised Edition, 2009) by Paul Johnsgard

Nebraska and its adjoining states represent a nearly unique ornithological situation. Although they are almost entirely grassland, the plains states are variably dissected by river-bottom forests that provide natural passageways for forest-adapted species to enter the plains and sometimes to cross them. Although eastern and western bird faunas tend to be separated by the plains, they often mingle to some degree, resulting in competition and sometimes hybridization. The central Great Plains thus are exceedingly interesting from ecological, evolutionary, and zoogeographic perspectives, and the plains bird fauna is significant both for what is present and for what has been variably excluded. …

Impairments In Attention In Occasionally Snoring Children: An Event-Related Potential Study, Maria E. Barnes, Elizabeth A. Huss, Krista N. Garrod, Eric Van Raay, Ehab Dayyat, Dennis L. Molfese

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Objective—To determine whether minimal snoring is benign in children.

Procedure—22 rarely snoring children (mean age=6.9 years, 11 females) and age- and sexmatched controls participated in an auditory oddball task wearing 128-electrode nets. Parents completed Conner’s Parent Rating Scales-Revised Long (CPRS-R:L).

Results—Snorers scored significantly higher on 4 CPRS-R:L subscales. Stepwise regression indicated that two ERP variables from a region of the ERP that peaked at 844 ms post-stimulus onset predicted CPRS-R:L ADHD Index scores.

Conclusions—Occasional snorers according to parental report do exhibit ADHD-like behaviors. Basic sensory processing is longer than in controls, suggesting that delayed frontal activation requires more effort in …

Roadmap For Future Research On Plant Pathogen Effectors, James R. Alfano Jan 2009

Roadmap For Future Research On Plant Pathogen Effectors, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Bacterial and eukaryotic plant pathogens deliver effector proteins into plant cells to promote pathogenesis. Bacterial pathogens containing type III protein secretion systems are known to inject many of these effectors into plant cells. More recently, oomycete pathogens have been shown to possess a large family of effectors containing the RXLR motif, and many effectors are also being discovered in fungal pathogens. Although effector activities are largely unknown, at least a subset suppress plant immunity. A plethora of new plant pathogen genomes that will soon be available thanks to next-generation sequencing technologies will allow the identification of many more effectors. This …

Aunt Jenny, Julia Rice Jan 2009

Aunt Jenny, Julia Rice

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

Every day Jenny is with us, my mother truly celebrates my aunt's Down syndrome. To my mom, it is a blessing, a condition that takes away all social barriers, all filters, and shows the real depth of the human heart.... By her example, I learned to celebrate Jenny as well. I learned that there is no need to feel embarrassed by her. I also learned that her condition is not one to be pitied. Jenny is a person of a whole different category: different, but worthy of admiration.

Julia Rice is a Nursing major at James Madison University, hoping to …

Crafting A Masterpiece: The Genre Mosaic Of Harry Potter, Emily Keller

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

Harry's story is a global phenomenon, with the seven books in the series selling 400 million copies in sixty-seven languages and leading to the production of eight blockbuster movies. In a time when newspapers and other forms of print media are losing their readership, Harry Potter's enduring popularity would seem surprising if not for the array of genres that appeal to the series' diverse audience.

Emily Keller is majoring in Justice Studies and pursuing a minor in Creative Writing at James Madison University. Although she aspires to become a lawyer, her dream is to write and publish novels. A …

Mountaintop Removal Mining, Kristina Van Jan 2009

Mountaintop Removal Mining, Kristina Van

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

The Rocky Mountains look like paintings from above, with luscious green trees covering the lower peaks. Rivers snake through the valleys, beginning to carve their way down to the ocean. A light mist hangs between each slope with the tops of the snow-capped mountains jutting into the sky.... Unfortunately, an aerial view of the Appalachian Mountains provides a different and alarming sight. Rocks and rubble replace the green trees. The rivers are nowhere to be seen, hidden underneath mounds of dirt. A haze of settling dust from a long day of work leaves a black layer on the houses in …

South Park: A Public Service Announcement, William Ackleson

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

Each South Park episode leads viewers through a series of outrageous circumstances that culminate in an interesting and oftentimes profound conclusion. Whether Parker and Stone simply give Al Gore a little shove off of his high horse or make a bold statement about an important social issue such as whether or not we as humans should play God, they inevitably have something of consequence to say regarding a current social issue, and millions of viewers tune in every week to find out what it is.

William Ackleson is currently an Engineering major from McLean, Virginia in his Freshman year at …

The Unspooling Of Artkino: Soviet Film Distribution In America, 1940-1975, James H. Krukones Jan 2009

The Unspooling Of Artkino: Soviet Film Distribution In America, 1940-1975, James H. Krukones

History

The article discusses the distribution of Soviet motion pictures in the U.S. by distribution company Artkino, from 1940 to 1975. The author states that Artkino was virtually the sole U.S. distributor of movies from the Soviet Union for 20 of those years. Discussion is offered relating the conditions of the Soviet film sector in the U.S. as well as describing the marketing and business management of the company. Comments are also given profiling the first Soviet film distributed in the U.S. "The Battleship Potemkin," directed by Sergei Eisenstein, and other typical films of the era.

The 2008 Update Of The Aspergillus Nidulans Genome Annotation: A Community Effort, Jennifer Russo Wortman, Steven D. Harris, Geoffrey Turner, Aspergillus Nidulans Consortium Jan 2009

The 2008 Update Of The Aspergillus Nidulans Genome Annotation: A Community Effort, Jennifer Russo Wortman, Steven D. Harris, Geoffrey Turner, Aspergillus Nidulans Consortium

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The identification and annotation of protein-coding genes is one of the primary goals of whole-genome sequencing projects, and the accuracy of predicting the primary protein products of gene expression is vital to the interpretation of the available data and the design of downstream functional applications. Nevertheless, the comprehensive annotation of eukaryotic genomes remains a considerable challenge. Many genomes submitted to public databases, including those of major model organisms, contain significant numbers of wrong and incomplete gene predictions. We present a community-based reannotation of the Aspergillus nidulans genome with the primary goal of increasing the number and quality of protein functional …

Eighty-eight rice (Oryza sativa) cDNAs encoding rice leaf expressed protein kinases (PKs) were fused to a Tandem Affinity Purification tag (TAP-tag) and expressed in transgenic rice plants. The TAP-tagged PKs and interacting proteins were purified from the T1 progeny of the transgenic rice plants and identified by tandem mass spectrometry. Forty-five TAPtagged PKs were recovered in this study and thirteen of these were found to interact with other rice proteins with a high probability score. In vivo phosphorylated sites were found for three of the PKs. A comparison of the TAP-tagged data from a combined analysis of 129 …
