The Oxford Handbook Of Philosophy And Literature, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jan 2009

The Oxford Handbook Of Philosophy And Literature, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

This introductory article explains the coverage of this book, which is about the relations of complementarity and opposition between philosophy and literature. This book explores the interests for human life of specific genres of literature, considers broad modes of attention that have marked off certain large cultural periods from one another, traces workings of certain central literary devices for achieving attention and evaluates the use of literature as a practice in relation to the practices of inquiry, morality and politics. It also discusses the significance of the works of some philosophers in analyzing literary practice.

Trpv1 Mrna Is Differentially Expressed In Different Vertebral Levels Of Rat Dorsal Root Ganglia Following Sciatic Nerve Injury, Bree Zeyzus Johns Jan 2009

Trpv1 Mrna Is Differentially Expressed In Different Vertebral Levels Of Rat Dorsal Root Ganglia Following Sciatic Nerve Injury, Bree Zeyzus Johns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 plays an important role in the pain pathway. TRPV1 is expressed in primary afferent nociceptors and acts as a transducer for noxious stimuli; including capsaicin, toxins and noxious heat. TRPV1 protein expression increases in inflammatory and neuropathic pain models, but transcriptional regulation of TRPV1 remains unclear. In the present study, TRPV1 mRNA levels were measured in Dorsal Root Ganglia pertaining to the third, fourth and fifth vertebral levels of the lumbar spine following chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve in rats. TRPV1 mRNA levels are shown to increase in lumbar dorsal root ganglia in …

Augustine's Analogy Between The Spirit In The Church And The Soul In The Body And Its Implications For Communion Ecclesiology, Gabriel Mendy Jan 2009

Augustine's Analogy Between The Spirit In The Church And The Soul In The Body And Its Implications For Communion Ecclesiology, Gabriel Mendy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the Spirit's own age, it is ironically ascribed a secondary role in the Church. Conversely, I have opted to study Augustine's Spirit - Soul analogy and its implications in order to identify the Spirit as the Church's principle of communion. Analogies are generally open to interpretations and their relevance also varies according to the context. This study is, therefore, designed to offer a faithful interpretation of Augustine's analogy based on his understanding of the Spirit in his trinitarian theology. And is, at the same time, an attempt to specify the analogy's relevance for the Church's unity in diversity, the …

From Working Arm To Wetback: The Mexican Worker And American National Identity, 1942-1964, Mark Brinkman Jan 2009

From Working Arm To Wetback: The Mexican Worker And American National Identity, 1942-1964, Mark Brinkman

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

This thesis explores America’s treatment of the Mexican worker in the United States between 1942 and 1964, the years in which an international guest worker agreement between the United States and Mexico informally known as the Bracero Program was in place, and one in which heightened fears of illegal immigration resulted in Operation Wetback, one of the largest deportation programs in U.S. history. The Mexican worker’s experience during the bracero era brings to light core traits of American national identity, such as xenophobia and ethnocentrism, that today obstruct the United States’ ability to resolve its currently conflicted relationship with the …

The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural and contextual resilience mechanisms operating in the lives of Sudanese refugees living in Virginia. A convenience and snowball sampling of 10 Sudanese refugees (1 female, 9 male) living in Virginia were selected to participate in this study. Through interviews, I gathered and documented participant narratives. For the purpose of triangulation, I collected demographic information and data about the level of traumatic events experienced and the impact of these events using quantitative instruments. I analyzed the data using grounded theory methodology in order to explore the meaning attributed to past events …

Los Immigrantes: In-Depth Reporting And Anonymous Source Analysis, Ashley Belcher

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This Capstone Experience/Thesis is an in-depth reporting project on Hispanic immigration in Bowling Green, Kentucky. With a journalistic approach, this project identifies key issues in the immigrant community, including issues concerning illegal immigrants. The purpose of this project is to identify and document the stories of these immigrants. Because some sources interviewed were illegal, anonymity was upheld throughout the project. This CE/T also analyzes the use of anonymous sources in journalism. Specifically, this project analyzes the balance of the field of journalism’s requirement to inform its public and the requirement to not harm any source.

Prospecting For Mammalian Chemical Signals Via Solventless Extraction Techniques: An Elephantine Task, Thomas Goodwin, Bruce A. Schulte Jan 2009

Prospecting For Mammalian Chemical Signals Via Solventless Extraction Techniques: An Elephantine Task, Thomas Goodwin, Bruce A. Schulte

Biology Faculty Publications

In contrast to a plethora of known insect pheromones, a paucity of mammalian pheromones has been identified, two of which have been in elephants (Albone, 1984; Brown and Macdonald, 1985; Wyatt, 2003; Burger, 2005). Elephants possess one of the world’s best chemosensory systems, due in no small measure to their prehensile trunk. The trunk is not only the gateway to smelling (primary olfaction), but also the means by which chemical signals are conveyed from their source to the openings of the vomeronasal organ ducts in the roof of the mouth (the flehmen response; secondary olfaction) (Rasmussen, 1999). The late L. …

Curing Nature-Deficit Disorder: How Environmental Education Helps Kids Learn, Jamie Leigh Langley Jan 2009

Curing Nature-Deficit Disorder: How Environmental Education Helps Kids Learn, Jamie Leigh Langley

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Walk into any public school and talk with the children about their experiences in nature and you will begin to see a pattern. Children have made few connections with the world around them. They do not spend much time outdoors and the time they do spend outdoors is not spent interacting directly with nature. Why does this matter? Look at these same kids and you will see another pattern emerging: Attention-Deficit Disorder, depression, obesity, emotional problems, etc. While not all of these problems are directly caused by a lack of interaction with the natural world, current research shows that there …

Erisa Remedies, Welfare Benefits, And Bad Faith: Losing Sight Of The Cathedral, Peter K. Stris

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Because of an annual tax subsidy that well exceeds $100 billion, most private healthcare expenses in the United States today are covered by employer-sponsored insurance. Like other important employee-welfare benefits, employer-sponsored health insurance is regulated by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) - a landmark federal statute whose primary objective was the protection of private-sector retirement savings. A rich scholarly literature has developed which addresses the effects of federal tax and regulatory policy on the structure and performance of our healthcare industry. Within legal academia, however, one issue in particular has engendered much debate: to what extent …

Three Examples Where The Specific Surface Area Of Snow Increased Over Time, F. Domine, A. S. Taillandier, A. Cabanes, T. A. Douglas, M. Sturm

United States Army: Publications

Snow on the ground impacts climate through its high albedo and affects atmospheric composition through its ability to adsorb chemical compounds. The quantification of these effects requires the knowledge of the specific surface area (SSA) of snow and its rate of change. All relevant studies indicate that snow SSA decreases over time. Here, we report for the first time three cases where the SSA of snow increased over time. These are (1) the transformation of a melt-freeze crust into depth hoar, producing an increase in SSA from 3.4 to 8.8m2 kg−1. (2) The mobilization of surface snow …

Pavlovian Drug Discrimination With Bupropion As A Feature Positive Occasion Setter: Substitution By Methamphetamine And Nicotine, But Not Cocaine, Jamie L. Wilkinson, Chia Li, Rick A. Bevins Jan 2009

Pavlovian Drug Discrimination With Bupropion As A Feature Positive Occasion Setter: Substitution By Methamphetamine And Nicotine, But Not Cocaine, Jamie L. Wilkinson, Chia Li, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Bupropion can serve as a discriminative stimulus (SD) in an operant drug discrimination task, and a variety of stimulants substitute for the bupropion SD. There are no reports, however, of bupropion functioning as a Pavlovian occasion setter (i.e., feature positive modulator). The present experiment seeks to fill this gap in the literature by training bupropion in rats as a feature positive modulator that disambiguates when a light will be paired with sucrose. Specifically, on bupropion (10 mg/kg IP) sessions, offset of 15-sec cue lights were followed by brief delivery of liquid sucrose; saline sessions were similar …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Current smokers express the desire to quit. However, the majority find it difficult to remain abstinent. As such, research efforts continually seek to develop more effective treatment. One such area of research involves the interoceptive stimulus effects of nicotine as either a discriminative stimulus in an operant drug discrimination task, or more recently as a conditional stimulus (CS) in a discriminated goal-tracking task. The present work investigated the potential role nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the CS effects of nicotine (0.4 mg/kg) using antagonists with differential selectivity for β2*, α7*, α6β2*, and α3β4* receptors. Methyllycaconitine (MLA) had no effect on nicotine-evoked …

Epigenetics, Oxidative Stress, And Alzheimer Disease, Nasser H. Zawia, Debomoy K. Lahiri, Fernando Cardozo-Pelaez

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Alzheimer disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder whose clinical manifestations appear in old age. The sporadic nature of 90% of AD cases, the differential susceptibility to and course of the illness, as well as the late age onset of the disease suggest that epigenetic and environmental components play a role in the etiology of late-onset AD. Animal exposure studies demonstrated that AD may begin early in life and may involve an interplay between the environment, epigenetics, and oxidative stress. Early life exposure of rodents and primates to the xenobiotic metal lead (Pb) enhanced the expression of genes associated with …

A Critical Guide To The Iraqi High Tribunal's Anfal Judgement: Genocide Against The Kurds, Jennifer Trahan Jan 2009

A Critical Guide To The Iraqi High Tribunal's Anfal Judgement: Genocide Against The Kurds, Jennifer Trahan

Michigan Journal of International Law

In the Anfal trial, the Iraqi High Tribunal (IHT or the Tribunal) in Baghdad convicted former Iraqi high officials of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Unlike its predecessor-the Dujail trial-the Anfal trial included the presentation of a high volume of documentary and eye-witness evidence. This evidence clearly revealed the existence of a genocidal campaign by the former Iraqi government and military that eliminated an estimated 182,000 Iraqi Kurds in 1988, as part of the eight-phased "Anfal campaign" (the Anfal). Relying on this and other evidence, judges in the Anfal Trial Chamber explained fairly persuasively how genocide, crimes against …

The Idea & Value Of "Book"- A Comparative Review Of Sound In Motion - A Performer's Guide To Greater Musical Expression By David Mcgill & Deepening Musical Performance Through Movement - The Theory And Practice Of Embodied Interpretation By Alexandra, Jonathan Dunsby

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

I would like to begin with a short, personal story. As a music major, I spotted a German book called Das Meisterwerk in der Musik, the enticing title of which translates as "The Musical Masterpiece." Intrigued, I showed this library book to my tutor, who advised me to leave it alone. "Schenker is toxic" were his precise words. To a youngster of the post 1968 era, a forbidden idea just made it all the more alluring, and so I discovered what few of my generation seemed to be being taught. Admittedly, piano studies involved a venerable lineage through Heinrich Neuhaus …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The 2009 Guide for Weed Management in Nebraska is a valuable tool for anyone with responsibility for controlling weeds in crop, pasture, range, turf or aquatic environments in Nebraska. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive publication that will enable the user to make sound weed control decisions based on unbiased, research-based information, and to carry out weed control activities in a safe and responsible manner.

This publication deals principally with herbicides as an aid for crop production. The suggestions for use are based on research at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Research and Extension Centers and elsewhere.
