Epa's Council For Regulatory Environmental Modeling : A Case Study Of Science Policy Implementation , Genevieve M. Borg Jan 2009

Epa's Council For Regulatory Environmental Modeling : A Case Study Of Science Policy Implementation , Genevieve M. Borg

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

As environmental problems became more complex, policy and regulatory decisions become far more difficult to make. The use of science has become an important practice in the decision making process of many federal agencies. Many different types of scientific information are used to make decisions within the EPA, with computer models becoming especially important. Environmental models are used throughout the EPA in a variety of contexts and their predictive capacity has become highly valued in decision making.

The main focus of this research is to examine the EPA’s Council for Regulatory Modeling (CREM) as a case study in addressing science …

Robots In War: Issues Of Risk And Ethics, Patrick Lin, George A. Bekey, Keith Abney Jan 2009

Robots In War: Issues Of Risk And Ethics, Patrick Lin, George A. Bekey, Keith Abney

Philosophy

War robots clearly hold tremendous advantages-from saving the lives of our own soldiers, to safely defusing roadside bombs, to operating in inaccessible and dangerous environments such as mountainside caves and underwater. Without emotions and other liabilities on the battlefield, they could conduct warfare more ethically and effectively than human soldiers who are susceptible to overreactions, anger, vengeance, fatigue, low morale, and so on. But the use of robots, especially autonomous ones, raises a a host of ethical and risk issues. This paper offers a a survey of such emerging issues in this new but rapidly advancing area of technology.

On Whether Or Not Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology Of Lived Body Experience Can Enrich St. Thomas Aquinas's Integral Anthropology, Joshua Miller Jan 2009

On Whether Or Not Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology Of Lived Body Experience Can Enrich St. Thomas Aquinas's Integral Anthropology, Joshua Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I argue that Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of lived body experience can be used to enrich Aquinas's integral anthropology. In Chapter One I lay out the possibilities of such an enrichment by examining contemporary philosophers of mind who draw on Aquinas and Merleau-Ponty in strikingly similar ways. Analytical Thomists, as represented by Eric LaRock, and thinkers seeking to integrate neuropsychology and phenomenology, like Ralph Ellis, argue that that the concept of form (taken from Aquinas and Merleau-Ponty respectively) is necessary for properly understanding the human being as an integral unity of intellectual principle and body. I then pose potential objections to my …

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of The Lower Murchison River Area, Western Australia, P Hennig

Technical Bulletins

The inventory and condition survey of the lower Murchison River area, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 2002 and 2003, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. This survey report presents …

"‘A Philosophical Shock’: Foucault’S Reading Of Heidegger And Nietzsche." In: C. G. Prado, Ed., Foucault’S Legacy (London: Continuum, 2009), Pp. 19-41., Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Although there is no lack of efforts to read Foucault and Nietzsche together or indeed to align Foucault and Heidegger, Foucault scholarship overall tends to be split on these same terms. The author argues that the opposition is misleading for the complicated reason that Foucault’s Heidegger can only be understood on Nietzschean terms while and at the same time, Foucault’s Nietzsche only takes place by way of Heidegger albeit (and this point simply cannot be overemphasized) a very Frencophone reading of Heidegger.

Field Research Experience: Earth Science And Iowa Core Curriculum, Michael Goudy Jan 2009

Field Research Experience: Earth Science And Iowa Core Curriculum, Michael Goudy

Graduate Research Papers

Due to the retirement of the former earth science teacher I was given the opportunity to take over the earth science elective classes. Oskaloosa Senior High School is based on a trimester school year. The third trimester earth science course was formerly called Wilderness Adventures. I renamed the course as Field Research Experience. This added greater value due to emphasis on more science skills and possible career application. As an active outdoorsman and former Boy Scout leader I was excited to incorporate the skills needed to enjoy outdoor recreation into those required of persons involved in doing scientific field research.

When The Personal Becomes Professional: Surveillances Of A Professor's Eating Disorder Personae, April Chatham-Carpeneter Jan 2009

When The Personal Becomes Professional: Surveillances Of A Professor's Eating Disorder Personae, April Chatham-Carpeneter

Iowa Journal of Communication

Four personae are presented as ways in which I act out my role as a professor studying eating disorders: (a) a former anorexic, (b) a seasoned professor, (c) a concerned, yet controlled, mother, and (d) a partner of my eating disorder. Using autoethnography, I present the internal wrestling match I go through on what to expose about myself as a scholar. In doing so, I experience a surveillance type of watching from various audience members, including myself, and this puts the anorexia back in my face again as a possible option. I reveal the myth of controlling one's research or …

Addams And Dewey: Pragmatism, Expression, And Community, Marilyn Fischer Jan 2009

Addams And Dewey: Pragmatism, Expression, And Community, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Chicago in the 1890s was home to two remarkable institutions, started by two remarkable activist-philosophers, experimenting with ideas and with social change. The first was Hull House, a social settlement, founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. The second was the Laboratory School, an experimental school opened in 1896 by John Dewey, along with teachers Katherine Camp Mayhew and Anna Camp Edwards. Interaction was constant between the residents of Hull House and the teachers of the Laboratory School, as the participants learned from and taught each other. Through Hull House and the Laboratory School, Addams and Dewey …

Cuscuta Jepsonii (Convolvulaceae): An Invasive Weed Or An Extinct Endemic?, Mihai Costea, Saša Stefanović Jan 2009

Cuscuta Jepsonii (Convolvulaceae): An Invasive Weed Or An Extinct Endemic?, Mihai Costea, Saša Stefanović

Biology Faculty Publications

Despite their ecological significance, parasitic plants face more conservation challenges than do autotrophic plants. This is especially true for the groups that include weedy or invasive species such as Cuscuta. While approximately half of the Cuscuta (dodders) species may require conservation measures, the genus as a whole is sometimes posted on governmental lists of noxious or quarantine weeds. Our study challenges this stereotype and uses the case of C. jepsonii (Jepson’s dodder) to illustrate the precarious biodiversity and conservation status faced by many dodder species. Until now, Jepson’s dodder has been known only from its type collection. Consequently, its …

Notes On Art And The Intrinsic Worth Of A Human Life - 2009, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2009

Notes On Art And The Intrinsic Worth Of A Human Life - 2009, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

Recall Tina Turner's famous song, where the singer pounds the audience repeatedly with the insistent apparent question: "what's love got to do with it!?" We know she's not really asking, "What's love got to do with it"; she's making a statement. What she wants to do is deny love's force, and free herself from its disappointment. The singer's seeming repudiation of love is an attempted eradication of something that is definitely still part of her.

Accounting And Control In The Persepolis Fortification Tablets, Gloria Vollmers Jan 2009

Accounting And Control In The Persepolis Fortification Tablets, Gloria Vollmers

Accounting Historians Journal

The bookkeeping records collected and retained by accountants of the Persian Empire centered at Persepolis from 509-494 B.C. are examined in this paper. A powerful bureaucracy exercised control over foodstuffs to supply an immense number of royal and state personnel and workers with their ration needs. A sophisticated accounting system facilitated this control, making visible not only the quantities of food assets distributed but also the locations and individuals responsible for these distributions.

A Tiny Heart Beating: Student-Edited Legal Periodicals In Good Ol'europe, Federico Longobardi, Luigi Russi Jan 2009

A Tiny Heart Beating: Student-Edited Legal Periodicals In Good Ol'europe, Federico Longobardi, Luigi Russi

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper has a twofold aim: to analyze the possible opportunities disclosed by the observed growth of student-edited law reviews in Europe and to propose an innovative model of student participation to legal publication. The first part explores the phenomenon of student-edited law reviews in the U.S., focusing on its recognized educational benefits. Among others, it is observed that participation in student-edited law reviews might promote greater scholarly maturity among J.D. students, who might in turn be better equipped for a career in the academia after finishing law school, in comparison to their same-age European peers. Hence, there follows an …

Luciano Bianciardi’S Aprire Il Fuoco: On The Function Of Literature In Society, Stefano Giannini Jan 2009

Luciano Bianciardi’S Aprire Il Fuoco: On The Function Of Literature In Society, Stefano Giannini

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

This is the first article to assess the importance of Luciano Bianciardi’s last novel, Aprire il fuoco [Open Fire!](1969), a work often overlooked, that offers crucial insights into Bianciardi’s commitments to social causes. A so-called “irregular” of 20th-century Italian literary panorama, Luciano Bianciardi (1922-1971) in his Aprire il fuoco discusses his idea of literature as an activity that must aim at assuming the role of ethical guide in societies. In my article, I gloss the often obscure historical and literary references of the novel, and provide a critical assessment of its impact.

Patents & (And) The Progress Of Personalized Medicine: Biomarkers Research As Lens, Matthew Herder Jan 2009

Patents & (And) The Progress Of Personalized Medicine: Biomarkers Research As Lens, Matthew Herder

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article addresses the barriers to personalized medicine, focusing on the burgeoning field of biomarkers research. The author begins by framing intellectual property issues as more than a product of industry incentives and suggests that these issues are deeply entangled with other barriers facing personalized medicine such as regulatory framework deficiencies. The author proposes a set of future research questions to more fully define the barriers to biomarkers research and to uncover which corrective measures may be effective. The author concludes by recommending an integration of regulatory and patent reforms, with a call to action by scholars, scientists, representatives of …
