Assessment Of Endocrine And Gonadal Condition Of Male Largemouth Bass From Lake Mead, Nevada, Reynaldo Patino, Steven L. Goodbred, Erik Orsak, Jill A. Jenkins, Michael R. Rosen

Lake Mead Science Symposium

Las Vegas Bay (LVB) of Lake Mead receives combined flows of tertiary treated wastewater effluent, urban runoff, and groundwater from the Las Vegas metropolitan area. This study examined the potential for endocrine disrupting effects of these anthropogenic inputs on male largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Adult male bass were collected at two sites within Lake Mead: Overton Arm (OA, reference site), and Las Vegas Bay (LVB). Post-spawn fish were collected in July 2007 (n = 6-10 per site) and pre-spawn fish in March 2008 (n = 13 per site). Post-spawn fish were characterized by regressed testes whereas pre-spawn bass had full-grown …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The last year is gone, and 2009 predictions are rolling in. Here are a few of our favorite 2008 wrap-ups and 2009 predictions from the past few weeks. Looking back…

1. China Beat’s Jeffrey Wasserstrom has posted a few of his own reflections on 2009. At the Christian Science Monitor, Wasserstrom wrote about “the two big China stories you missed this year” (though regular China Beat readers likely won’t have…!). The subheading should tip you off to these two stories: “The brief yet radical shift of patriotic fervor into criticism of the government after the Sichuan earthquake and the official …

Background

Microarray analysis and 454 cDNA sequencing were used to investigate a centuries-old problem in regenerative biology: the basis of nerve-dependent limb regeneration in salamanders. Innervated (NR) and denervated (DL) forelimbs of Mexican axolotls were amputated and transcripts were sampled after 0, 5, and 14 days of regeneration.

Results

Considerable similarity was observed between NR and DL transcriptional programs at 5 and 14 days post amputation (dpa). Genes with extracellular functions that are critical to wound healing were upregulated while muscle-specific genes were downregulated. Thus, many processes that are regulated during early limb regeneration do not depend upon nerve-derived factors. …

Increasing Preparer Responsibility, Visibility And Competence, Leslie Book Jan 2009

Increasing Preparer Responsibility, Visibility And Competence, Leslie Book

Working Paper Series

The insights from the responsive regulation literature present an intriguing model for IRS interaction with preparers, and provide a theoretical context for a more nuanced approach that the IRS could adopt when considering its return preparer strategies. To some extent, the IRS’s current emphasis on preparer education, including the significant resources expended on tax forums and other general outreach programs, reflects IRS awareness that its interaction with preparers must take a varied approach. In this paper, I propose a more personal contact paradigm with preparers, with those contacts facilitated by heightened identification requirements and a more dedicated IRS effort to …

Biology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The basis of genome size variation remains an outstanding question because DNA sequence data are lacking for organisms with large genomes. Sixteen BAC clones from the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum: c-value = 32 x 10(9) bp) were isolated and sequenced to characterize the structure of genic regions.

RESULTS: Annotation of genes within BACs showed that axolotl introns are on average 10x longer than orthologous vertebrate introns and they are predicted to contain more functional elements, including miRNAs and snoRNAs. Loci were discovered within BACs for two novel EST transcripts that are differentially expressed during spinal cord regeneration and skin …

Conscious Connections: Keynote Address, Nancy Cantor Jan 2009

Conscious Connections: Keynote Address, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

Today as we explore the many ways to imagine, create, and sustain two-way connections between artists and their audiences and broader communities, including universities, it's important to underscore the transformative nature of these connections, especially when they are embraced deliberately, as this year’s conference theme of conscious connections suggests. We know this as individuals---as presenters, performers or members of the audience. The dancer Twyla Tharp once said, "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home." For a little while, the magic of art can carry us to a different place, and we find ourselves at home among …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the crude leaf extracts of Melia azedarach against selected Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial strains. Five plant extracts (Methanol, Ethanol, Dichloromethane, Ethyl acetate and Aqueous) under five different concentrations (1mg/ml and 5mg/ml) were tested by Disk diffusion method. Methanol, Ethyl acetate and Aqueous extracts of M. azedarach showed significant inhibition against bacteria tested.

Can Males Successfully Invade Hermaphroditic Populations Of Clam Shrimp (Eulimnadia Texana)?, Stephen C. Weeks Jan 2009

Can Males Successfully Invade Hermaphroditic Populations Of Clam Shrimp (Eulimnadia Texana)?, Stephen C. Weeks

Biology Faculty Research

Androdioecy (mixtures of males and hermaphrodites) is distinguished by its rarity, being found in only similar to 40 animal species. Many of these species are clam shrimp in the genus Eulimnadia. A metapopulation model for the maintenance of androdioecy is tested herein by examining male success in aquaria with a single male-producing hermaphrodite introduced into an otherwise all-hermaphrodite population. This migration experiment did allow males to persist in these populations for seven generations, although at levels below those found in other populations of these shrimp. These results suggest that the maintenance of androdioecy via 'reproductive assurance' is unlikely by way …

Extending Grazing And Reducing Stored Feed Needs, Don Ball, Edward N. Ballard, Mark Kennedy, Garry D. Lacefield, Dan Undersander

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Why extend the grazing season? For most livestock producers, extending the grazing season for their animals, or otherwise filling gaps in pasture forage availability to reduce stored feed needs, should be a high priority objective.

Teff: What Is It? Where Does It Fit In Kentucky, Bret Winsett Jan 2009

Teff: What Is It? Where Does It Fit In Kentucky, Bret Winsett

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Teff (Eragrostis tef (zucc)) is an annual, warm season grass native to Ethiopia. Throughout its history, teff has been used more as a gluten-free grain for flour than as forage. However, in recent years, forage agronomists and producers have become increasingly interested in its potential contribution as a hay crop. Teff is characterized by a fairly large crown, many tillers, fine stems, a very shallow root system, rapid growth and high tonnage capability. During the vegetative stage, teff plants look somewhat similar to tall fescue in size and color. Teff tends to germinate quickly with good moisture, regrow quickly after …

The Merchant Of Venice: Schools, Libraries, And Censors, David C. Kupfer Jan 2009

The Merchant Of Venice: Schools, Libraries, And Censors, David C. Kupfer

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

For nearly a century, teaching Shakespeare'sThe Merchant of Venice in schools has been questioned, because of perceived religious prejudice . Defenders of Shakespeare are encouraged to fight censorship with a constitutional right to read. Definers of literature are left out when a defense of the play is required. Both potential censor and concerned parent could better observe reasons to protect the play through explanations of its merits presented alongside legal discourse. The school librarian will defend controversial classics more effectively if legal and literary judgments are used together to answer the wrath of the censors.

Weed Control Options For Pastures, Jon Doran Jan 2009

Weed Control Options For Pastures, Jon Doran

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

What is a weed? A pasture or hayfield “weed” is any plant that you deem as being out of place and/or a plant that is decreasing your desired forage production. Weeds may be classified in several ways including broadleaf weeds, woody plants, and undesirable grasses. Besides decreasing forage, weeds can also interfere with forage utilization, grazing distribution, etc. There are several methods available to control weeds and increase production of and access to desirable forages. The three main methods are cultural, mechanical, and chemical. The cultural method is quite simple-a thriving grass stand is an excellent form of weed control …

Selecting Clover Varieties Wisely, S. Ray Smith Jan 2009

Selecting Clover Varieties Wisely, S. Ray Smith

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Although there are not a lot of new red clover varieties, several companies and Universities have active red clover breeding programs. In some ways, red clover is the easiest species to make variety recommendations for. Simply put, “only plant certified seed of improved varieties, never plant common seed.” University of Kentucky research has shown that the difference between improved varieties and common seed can be 6000 to 10,000 lb/acre in higher yield and 1 to 1 ½ years longer stand life. Sometimes you may “luck up” and find that the bag of cheap common seed you purchased was actually an …
