Genetic Code Supports Targeted Insertion Of Two Amino Acids By One Codon, Anton Turanov, Alexei Lobanov, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Hilary Morrison, Mitchell Sogin, Lawrence Klobutcher, Dolph Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev Jan 2009

Genetic Code Supports Targeted Insertion Of Two Amino Acids By One Codon, Anton Turanov, Alexei Lobanov, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Hilary Morrison, Mitchell Sogin, Lawrence Klobutcher, Dolph Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Strict one-to-one correspondence between codons and amino acids is thought to be an essential feature of the genetic code. However, we report that one codon can code for two different amino acids with the choice of the inserted amino acid determined by a specific 3’ untranslated region structure and location of the dual-function codon within the messenger RNA (mRNA). We found that the codon UGA specifies insertion of selenocysteine and cysteine in the ciliate Euplotes crassus, that the dual use of this codon can occur even within the same gene, and that the structural arrangements of Euplotes mRNA preserve location-dependent …

Thermoregulation And Behavior Of A Peripheral Population Of Evening Bats (Nycticeius Humeralis), Rachel Bricklin Jan 2009

Thermoregulation And Behavior Of A Peripheral Population Of Evening Bats (Nycticeius Humeralis), Rachel Bricklin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

I used temperature-sensitive radio transmitters to measure body temperatures of tree-roosting evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis) at the northern edge of their range in Lenawee Co., Michigan. Temperature at sunset, diurnal temperature, and nocturnal temperature significantly correlated with use of torpor, whereas ambient temperature at sunset of the previous night, temperature at sunrise, amount of precipitation, abundance of insects, roost type, number of roost-mates, reproductive condition, and age did not. An analysis of individuals roosting in the same tree on the same day suggested that additional factors might determine exactly how low and for how long bats adjust their …

The Sleeping Brain's Influence On Verbal Memory: Boosting Resistance To Interference, Jeffrey M. Ellenbogen, Justin C. Hulbert, Ying Jiang, Robert Stickgold Jan 2009

The Sleeping Brain's Influence On Verbal Memory: Boosting Resistance To Interference, Jeffrey M. Ellenbogen, Justin C. Hulbert, Ying Jiang, Robert Stickgold

Dartmouth Scholarship

Memories evolve. After learning something new, the brain initiates a complex set of post-learning processing that facilitates recall (i.e., consolidation). Evidence points to sleep as one of the determinants of that change. But whenever a behavioral study of episodic memory shows a benefit of sleep, critics assert that sleep only leads to a temporary shelter from the damaging effects of interference that would otherwise accrue during wakefulness. To evaluate the potentially active role of sleep for verbal memory, we compared memory recall after sleep, with and without interference before testing. We demonstrated that recall performance for verbal memory was greater …

Flux Balance Analysis Of Primary Metabolism In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Nanette R. Boyle, John A. Morgan Jan 2009

Flux Balance Analysis Of Primary Metabolism In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Nanette R. Boyle, John A. Morgan

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

Photosynthetic organisms convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into numerous metabolites along the pathways to make new biomass. Aquatic photosynthetic organisms, which fix almost half of global inorganic carbon, have great potential: as a carbon dioxide fixation method, for the economical production of chemicals, or as a source for lipids and starch which can then be converted to biofuels. To harness this potential through metabolic engineering and to maximize production, a more thorough understanding of photosynthetic metabolism must first be achieved. A model algal species, C. reinhardtii, was chosen and the metabolic network reconstructed. Intracellular fluxes were then calculated using …

Evolution Of The Toxoglossa Venom Apparatus As Inferred By Molecular Phylogeny Of The Terebridae, Mandë Holford, Nicolas Puillandre, Yves Terryn, Corinne Cruaud, Baldomero Olivera, Philippe Bouchet

Publications and Research

Toxoglossate marine gastropods, traditionally assigned to the families Conidae, Terebridae, and Turridae, are one of the most populous animal groups that use venom to capture their prey. These marine animals are generally characterized by a venom apparatus that consists of a muscular venom bulb and a tubular venom gland. The toxoglossan radula, often compared with a hypodermic needle for its use as a conduit to inject toxins into prey, is considered a major anatomical breakthrough that assisted in the successful initial radiation of these animals in the Cretaceous and early Tertiary. The pharmacological success of toxins from cone snails has …

Parallel Shifts In Ecology And Natural Selection In An Island Lizard, Ryan Calsbeek, Wolfgang Buermann, Thomas B. Smith Jan 2009

Parallel Shifts In Ecology And Natural Selection In An Island Lizard, Ryan Calsbeek, Wolfgang Buermann, Thomas B. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

Natural selection is a potent evolutionary force that shapes phenotypic variation to match ecological conditions. However, we know little about the year-to-year consistency of selection, or how inter-annual variation in ecology shapes adaptive landscapes and ultimately adaptive radiations. Here we combine remote sensing data, field experiments, and a four-year study of natural selection to show that changes in vegetation structure associated with a severe drought altered both habitat use and natural selection in the brown anole, Anolis sagrei.

Results: In natural populations, lizards increased their use of vegetation in wet years and this was correlated with selection on limb length …

Severity Of Root Rot In Mature Subterranean Clover And Associated Fungal Pathogens In The Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Tim Scanlon, Tiernan A. O’Rourke, Martin J. Barbetti, Megan H. Ryan, Len J. Wade, Alan C. Mckay, Ian T. Riley, Hua Li, Krishnapillai Sivasithamparam

Journal articles

Pasture decline is considered to be a serious challenge to agricultural productivity of subterranean clover across southern Australia. Root disease is a significant contributing factor to pasture decline. However, root disease assessments are generally carried out in the early part of the growing season and in areas predominantly sown to permanent pastures. For this reason, in spring 2004, a survey was undertaken to determine the severity of root disease in mature subterranean clover plants in pastures located in the wheatbelt of Western Australia. DNA-based soil assays were used to estimate population density in the soil of a variety of soil-borne …

Providing Providers: Abortion Training For Physicians In The United States, 1920-2007, Soledad Tarka Ayres

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This work was designed to investigate the teaching of induced abortion to allopathic medical doctors in the twentieth-century United States. Elective termination of pregnancy is an extremely common procedure in the United States (1). While abortions have been and continue to be performed by nurses and midwives as well as by physicians, the training of medical doctors is of particular interest. Their lengthy formal training and historical stature as a highly educated group have garnered a respect in the public eye and an image as safe and knowledgeable providers, even where abortion training might have been lacking. This project aimed …
