An Investigation Of Cardiac Dynamics And Substrate Metabolism In An Animal Heart Failure Model, Anna Stanhewicz
An Investigation Of Cardiac Dynamics And Substrate Metabolism In An Animal Heart Failure Model, Anna Stanhewicz
Senior Honors Projects
Heart failure (HF) is a condition in which the working heart is unable to meet the blood flow demands of the body. It is the leading cause of early death in the United States and is a progressive, debilitating disease that presently, can only be detected in late, irreversible stages. The progression of HF is complex and poorly understood, involving a number of molecular mechanisms. It is characterized by a complex of symptoms including cardiac hypertrophy and a shift in myocardial substrate utilization, all leading to reduced pumping efficiency of the heart and decreased systemic blood flow. In HF, the …

American artist Paul McCarthy (born 1945) is most well known for his live and video-taped performances in which he plays with mass-produced food products such as ketchup or chocolate syrup. In these scatological works McCarthy parodies characters from popular culture, such as Disney’s Pinocchio, while simultaneously referencing family figures from his childhood. Attacks on popular culture and on personal family figures are two themes that appear separately in the work of a number of contemporary artists, but McCarthy’s work is unique because of the connection he draws between the two. In his work he offers his own childhood experiences as …

Fisheries Research Report No. 184 - Macroscopic And Microscopic Description Of Snapper (Pagrus Auratus) Gonads From Shark Bay, Western Australia, Michael C. Mackie, Gary Jackson, Nadia E. Tapp, Jeffrey V. Norriss, Adrian Thomson
Fisheries Research Reports
Since 1997, research on snapper (Pagrus auratus, Sparidae) in the inner gulfs of Shark Bay has focussed on providing biological information required for the management of the regionally important recreational fishery. A major component of this research has been a comprehensive investigation of snapper reproductive biology to determine size and age at maturity, the timing of the spawning season and to estimate batch fecundity. This research has necessitated a review of the macroscopic staging system used for P. auratus in Western Australian waters and the development of a more detailed microscopic system to allow accurate analyses of histological material. Based …

Final FRDC Report – Project 2004/042
Objectives
1. Determine for the 20 major WA scalefish species (4 - 5 in each bioregion) the relative accuracy of structures used to estimate age (e.g. Sectioned/whole otoliths, lengths, otolith weight, other otolith dimensions or some combination of these).
2. For each stock, examine the relative impact on the calculated age-compositions and their effect on model outputs and conclusions from varying (i) the method of ageing used (only where this is possible from available data) (ii) the number of individuals used in the samples (iii) the spatial distribution of the samples used (iv) if …

From The Highlands To A Low Country: Assimilation Of Scottish Highland Settlers To Local Vernacular Building Traditions In North And South Carolina, Bridget Jean O'Brien
Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects
In recent years several early Scottish dwellings in North and South Carolina have been lost by fire, neglect, or dismantlement. Several buildings of this nature were saved by local preservation groups and private citizens and have since been stabilized and restored. Eight early farm dwellings of Scottish settlers in North and South Carolina were chosen to be studied and analyzed to determine if Scottish vernacular building types were brought to the American colonies in the late 18th and early 19th century.
Before looking at Scottish dwellings in North and South Carolina a study of traditional Highland architecture is necessary to …

What Is Digital History? A Look At Some Exemplar Projects, Douglas Seefeldt, William G. Thomas Iii
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Both of us came into the history profession in the early 1990s and went through graduate school just before the remarkable emergence of the World Wide Web. Of course, we can see now that a communication revolution was taking place during those years and that it was changing the way we do historical scholarship and teaching. After the development of browsers like Mosaic Netscape and Netscape Navigator in 1994, the web grew at an astonishing rate into a global information network. Even at the early stages of the web’s growth, history was all over the web. Amazingly, people rushed to …

Information Literacy And Blind And Visually Impaired Students, Rebecca Adler Schiff
Information Literacy And Blind And Visually Impaired Students, Rebecca Adler Schiff
Urban Library Journal
In the summer of 2007, as part of the City University of New York PeopleTech Summer Institute held at Baruch College, the author taught a class in information literacy to a group of blind and visually impaired students, using assistive technology to access the resources of the college library. Despite considerable preparation and experience, teaching the class presented unexpected difficulties, detailed in this paper. Rapid advances in information literacy technology present unusual challenges for the average student—challenges that are magnified when the intermediate assistive technology is itself not easy to master. The author explores the pertinent literature.

The Games People Play: Rehearsal Games & Approaches For Fight Scenes, T. Fulton Burns
The Games People Play: Rehearsal Games & Approaches For Fight Scenes, T. Fulton Burns
Theatre Faculty Research
There are as many approaches to the rehearsal period as there are directors, actors and acting texts combined. Rehearsals are the time that we all look forward to because we truly get to do what we do best in theatre, which is “play.” The games and approaches in this article are intended to spice up the life of your stage combat scene and enhance the time spent in rehearsal; following the initial time period of learning choreography and discovering initial acting choices. Many people see the rehearsal process as the time to work. I couldn’t agree more but, as stated …

Beating The Punches: Scene And Fight Break Down Techniques, T. Fulton Burns
Theatre Faculty Research
As a fight choreographer it is my responsibility to sit down with the director and discover her/his vision for the production. Similarly, actors need to serve the script and work with the choreographer in connecting the action to the playwright’s words. Each preceding article, relating to the exploration of the skills proficiency tests (SPTs), has offered tools for connecting the scripts, stories, and characters with the language of the choreography. We are now ready to move deeper into directly linking fight choreography with the script and vice versa.
Some actors see pre-planning objectives for a scene and rehearsal as an …

The rainwater harvesting pilot project was commissioned by the National Rural Water Monitoring Committee in 2005 to assess the feasibility of supplementing treated mains water used for non-potable purposes. The project involved the design, installation, commissioning and monitoring of rainwater harvesting facilities in a rural housing development in County Carlow and in a 250-acre livestock farm in County Meath. Construction was carried out between 2005-2007.
Ending America's Dependence On Foreign Oil: Risk Perceptions Among Texans, Jessica R. Aldridge
Ending America's Dependence On Foreign Oil: Risk Perceptions Among Texans, Jessica R. Aldridge
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Reliance on foreign oil is a major problem facing the United States due to uncontrollable prices, dealing with hostile nations, and oil wars. Demographic variables, risk perception, community attachment, environmental knowledge, and environmental attitudes of Texans were examined to determine which factors influence attitudes toward the hard- and soft-energy path for ending the U.S. Reliance on foreign oil. The data for this study were collected through a mailed questionnaire which included 1,228 Texans in 12 counties over three ecological regions. The dependent measures, hard-energy path and soft-energy path, were regressed on the independent and control variables to determine which factors …

Common Garden Comparisons Of Native And Introduced Plant Populations: Latitudinal Clines Can Obscure Evolutionary Inferences, Robert I. Colautti, John L. Maron, Spencer C.H. Barrett
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Common garden studies are increasingly used to identify differences in phenotypic traits between native and introduced genotypes, often ignoring sources of among-population variation within each range. We re-analyzed data from 32 common garden studies of 28 plant species that tested for rapid evolution associated with biological invasion. Our goals were: (i) to identify patterns of phenotypic trait variation among populations within native and introduced ranges, and (ii) to explore the consequences of this variation for how differences between the ranges are interpreted. We combined life history and physiologic traits into a single principal component (PCALL) and also compared …
Teaching Emergent Literacy Skills To Students With Autism, Linda Laz
Teaching Emergent Literacy Skills To Students With Autism, Linda Laz
Early and Special Education Graduate Projects and Theses
The acquisition of functional reading skills is a critical educational outcome for all students, as these skills enhance the likelihood of both subsequent academic achievement as well as post-school success and maximal independence in adulthood. While some students with more severe manifestations of autism and intellectual impairment may not be able to attain the highest levels of academic literacy (the ability to understand and use sophisticated written academic material), functional literacy is an appropriate goal for all, as it facilitates student ability to independently and productively live, work, and engage in their community. It is important that teachers teach the …
