A Comprehensive Environmental Assessment Of Bucknell University, Dina El-Mogazi
Technical Reports
This report is the result of research conducted by dozens of students, faculty and staff over the period from September 2007 to September 2008. At the project’s opening summit in September 2007, ten assessment teams were formed, and each was provided with a detailed list of questions to answer. Collectively, these questions addressed nearly every conceivable aspect of the University’s environmental sustainability. This document is intended to take an honest and objective look at the sustainability of Bucknell’s policies and practices in a way that will encourage creative solutions.

The Impact Of Fast Forword On Mct Scores And Student Achievement, Michael Harvey Van Winkle
The Impact Of Fast Forword On Mct Scores And Student Achievement, Michael Harvey Van Winkle
Dissertations
Educators today were concerned with how the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 dealt with the improvement of education throughout the United States. Schools should have put forth a greater effort and reduced the achievement gap between different groups of students based on race, gender, special education status, and if that student was economically disadvantaged. A problem was identified as low student MCT scores in the state of Mississippi. A tutorial method that claimed to help improve students in the areas of reading and language was identified as Fast ForWord.
This study set out to find if there was …

Computational Modeling Of The Internal Structure In The Breast, Jordan Greenlee
Computational Modeling Of The Internal Structure In The Breast, Jordan Greenlee
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Many researchers who are using microwave modality in the area of breast cancer detection employ oversimplified models of the internal structure of the breast. Use of engineered or biologically inaccurate models could render inaccurate results. Therefore, a mathematical biological model is implemented in this work and aims to bridge the gap between biologists and engineers. The results of the proposed breast duct model show that older women have smaller breast ducts leading to less dense breasts, which is in agreement with medical knowledge. Also, younger women have larger breast ducts leading to more dense breasts which are consistent with the …
The Effects Of Priming On Self-Esteem With An Emphasis On Extroversion, Jamie A. Zagar, Danielle C. Merli
The Effects Of Priming On Self-Esteem With An Emphasis On Extroversion, Jamie A. Zagar, Danielle C. Merli
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
This experiment looked at priming on self-esteem. We were also interested in the differences between extroverts and introverts in relation to priming on self-esteem. A priming message with a graphic was used on the experimental group, while only the graphic (same image) was used for the control group. We measured extroversion between the two groups to look for differences within and between the group conditions, in relation to self-esteem. Participants in the experimental group were expected to have a higher self-esteem. A significant difference was found. The priming condition showed that participants had a higher self-esteem. However, a relationship between …
The Effects Of Active Vs. Natural Reforestation On Bird Diversity, May 2009, Jessica Springstead
The Effects Of Active Vs. Natural Reforestation On Bird Diversity, May 2009, Jessica Springstead
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
With rapid deforestation rates and loss of diversity the ability to reforest degraded landscapes faster than they would naturally regrow could be an effective tool for conservation. Many different methods of active reforestation have been proposed (Holl et al. 2000, Lamb et al. 2005, Martinez and Howe 2003) but because it is impossible to plant every species of plant that would be found in an area much of the diversity after planting must come from vertebrate dispersers of which most are birds (Fang and Peng 1997, Holl et al. 2000, Lamb et al. 2005, Martinez and Howe 2003). I wanted …

Fisheries Research Reports
Final FRDC Report – Project 2000/194
In Australia, most fishery managers regulate the catch of recreational fishes using size and bag limits. The effectiveness of these regulations depends on the fish surviving capture and then release back into the water. Effective management of fishing using size or bag limits therefore requires an understanding of the rates of mortality of released fish and what factors are causing mortality so that these might be alleviated. The rates and likely causes of mortality of released WA dhufish (Glaucosoma hebraicum) and snapper (Pagrus auratus), breaksea cod (Epinephelides armatus) and baldchin groper (Choerodon rubescens) off …

Thyroid Hormone Regulation Of Mrnas Encoding Thyrotropin Β-Subunit, Glycoprotein Α-Subunit, And Thyroid Hormone Receptors Α And Β In Brain, Pituitary Gland, Liver, And Gonads Of An Adult Teleost, Pimephales Promelas, Sean C. Lema, Jon T. Dickey, Irvin R. Schultz, Penny Swanson
Biological Sciences
Thyroid hormones (THs) regulate growth, morphological development, and migratory behaviors in teleost fish, yet little is known about the transcriptional dynamics of gene targets for THs in these taxa. Here, we characterized TH regulation of mRNAs encoding thyrotropin subunits and thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) in an adult teleost fish model, the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas). Breeding pairs of adult minnows were fed diets containing 3,5, 3,-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) or the goitrogen methimazole for 10 days. In males and females, dietary intake of exogenous T3 elevated circulating total T3, while methimazole …
Best Management Practices For Corn Production In South Dakota: Corn Growth And Development, Kurtis D. Reitsma, Sharon Clay, Robert G. Hall
Best Management Practices For Corn Production In South Dakota: Corn Growth And Development, Kurtis D. Reitsma, Sharon Clay, Robert G. Hall
SDSU Extension Circulars
Corn growth is influenced by cultural practices and available natural resources. The rate of growth and development changes during the season (fig. 1.1). In South Dakota, water and nitrogen (N) are important resources that limit yield. Other factors that reduce yield include disease, insects, weeds, and deficiency of other plant nutrients. For example, disease and insect infestations can reduce water and nutrient uptake or severely damage the plant to the point of yield loss. Weeds compete with the crop for water, nutrients, and light. Stress from temperature and water extremes affects nutrient availability, often increasing pest population and occurrence and …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The aim of present study was to analyze the oxygen uptake, the heart rate, and the energetic expenditure of women in two water aerobics routines: continuous and interval. The sample comprised ten voluntary active women who performed two water aerobics routines with a minimal interval of 48 hours and randomized order. Each routine was performed with the same exercises and duration, along 32 minutes. The intensity was controlled through Borg’s rate of perceived exertion (RPE), adopting RPE 13 for continuous routine and RPE 17 and RPE 9 for interval routines. It was utilized the paired t test, with the level …

Promoting Nonprofit Organisations' It Enablement In Singapore, Projjal Ghatak, Guillaume Sachet, Jared Tham
Lien Centre for Social Innovation: Research
The non profit landscape in Singapore is large and diverse, consisting of more than 1,800 registered charities and more than 500 approved Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs). These organisations vary in size from less than $100,000 in annual receipts to those with over $10 million in receipts. They also operate in over 10 sectors ranging from religion to education to sports. NPOs could consider the following four common models for enabling and deploying IT: In-sourcing; Outsourcing; Shared Services; Software as a Service (SaaS). Overcoming the challenges and capturing the opportunities can allow Singapore to increase the automation of the …
Screening Preschoolers For Autism With Behavior Rating Scales, Amber Desiré Gross
Screening Preschoolers For Autism With Behavior Rating Scales, Amber Desiré Gross
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Early identification of autism is important in order to maximize the potential of intervention efforts. However, the identification of autism can require extensive training and experience. Psychologists routinely use behavior rating scales to assess children for various social, emotional, or behavioral problems when completing evaluations in the school or clinical setting. The focus of the current study is to determine whether a behavior rating scale can accurately distinguish between referred preschoolers with autism and referred preschoolers without autism. Parents of 82 preschoolers referred to a nonprofit child development clinic because of behavioral or developmental concerns completed two behavior rating scales …

Using Archetypal Metaphor To Analyze Cultural Landscape: A Chlilean Case Study, Cari Bourette
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In our increasingly complex and interactive world, it becomes ever more difficult to isolate and map the cultural identity of any given region, as bounded and contained cultural places have become a rare occurrence. To further complicate the matter, perspectives, loyalties, and identities shift with time, and appear to shift with circumstance. While cultural conflict per se was not the subject of this study, the ability to quantify differing cultural profiles in one location relative to another may be the beginning of the development of a tool for assessing degrees of difference in neighboring regions, and thus diagnosing the potential …

Ten adult Quarter Horses (5 mares and 5 geldings) were placed in dry lot for 90 days and allowed free choice access to a diet consisting of average quality orchard grass hay, salt and water. The horses were then allowed free choice access to early-growth annual ryegrass pasture, salt and water for a 28 day period. Random hay and grass samples were analyzed for nutrient content. Blood samples were collected at 6 am, 8 am, 6 pm, and 8 pm on the final day of hay consumption and on the 4th, 9th and 28th days of grass consumption. Samples were …
The Conceptualization Of Genocide In The International Media: A Case Study Of Darfur, Kayla Costello
The Conceptualization Of Genocide In The International Media: A Case Study Of Darfur, Kayla Costello
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Cross-national crime studies are often plagued with conceptualization issues. In specific, some countries may define certain acts of violence as crimes, whereas others may perceive these acts as justifiable or culturally prescribed. This difference in conceptualization is especially the case with the crime of genocide, which the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948 defines “as any of a number of acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.” Despite this legal definition, countries, organizations, institutions or individuals may label a crisis as …
The Effect Of Breeding Herd Parity Structure On Genetic Improvement Of The Sow Herd, Caitlyn E. Abell
The Effect Of Breeding Herd Parity Structure On Genetic Improvement Of The Sow Herd, Caitlyn E. Abell
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This study focuses on the value of the genetic lag associated with maintaining sows for additional parities in a commercial swine herd. Three traits were included in this study: number born alive (NBA), 21 day litter weight (W21), and days to market (D250). The economic values assigned to these traits were $22.00/pig, $0.70/lb., and $0.17/day, respectively. The genetic improvement per generation made for each trait was assumed to be 0.3 pigs, 3.0 lbs., and 3.0 days, respectively. It was estimated that the value of the genetic lag associated with retaining a sow to P3, P5, and P7 was $24.80, $46.89, …

Arsenic And Selenium Distribution In Coal-Fired Plant Samples, Pauline Rose Hack Norris
Arsenic And Selenium Distribution In Coal-Fired Plant Samples, Pauline Rose Hack Norris
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Arsenic and selenium distributions in coal-fired plant samples are studied. This research includes arsenic and selenium concentrations in samples of coal, fly ash, bottom ash, economizer ash, Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) slurry and flue gas taken from four power plants with the goal being to examine the distribution of these metals in these materials and calculate a materials balance for the system. All samples were analyzed using ICP-ES.
This research shows that 60-80% of the arsenic in coal-fired plant samples will be associated with the fly ash. Approximately 35-55% of the selenium will be associated with the fly ash and …
Growing Change: Local Foods Movements And The Emergence Of Global Social Change, Annie S. Virnig
Growing Change: Local Foods Movements And The Emergence Of Global Social Change, Annie S. Virnig
Political Science Honors Projects
Local foods movements increasingly emerge as social movements with the power to challenge global norms. This paper develops around the question: can local foods movements create holistic sustainability at the global level? I begin by analyzing impetuses behind contemporary local foods movements. I then evaluate sustainability in three case studies – Auroville, India; the Twin Cities, United States; and Southern Africa. I ultimately argue that local foods movements can create sustainable change if they: (1) develop organically within their locale, (2) account for ecological, social, and economic implications of their actions, and (3) build translocal connections across multiple geographic scales.
Animal Pleasure And Its Moral Significance, Jonathan Balcombe
Animal Pleasure And Its Moral Significance, Jonathan Balcombe
Sentience Collection
This paper presents arguments for, and evidence in support of, the important role of pleasure in animals’ lives, and outlines its considerable significance to humankind’s relationship to other animals. In the realms of animal sentience, almost all scholarly discussion revolves around its negative aspects: pain, stress, distress, and suffering. By contrast, the positive aspects of sentience – rewards and pleasures – have been rarely broached by scientists. Yet, evolutionary principles predict that animals, like humans, are motivated to seek rewards, and not merely to avoid pain and suffering. Natural selection favours behaviours that enhance survival and procreation. In the conscious, …
Interests And Harms In Primate Research, Nathan Nobis
Interests And Harms In Primate Research, Nathan Nobis
Experimentation Collection
The article discusses the moral issues on primate research in reference to the moral defenses by Sughrue and colleagues. It states that Sughrue and colleagues have claimed to provide equal examination of the primate stroke research's ethics. It mentions that the promise to straighten out a number of ethical arguments in favor and against primate research was not fulfilled. Several moral arguments are presented in response to Sughrue and colleagues' moral defense for animal experimentation.
Animal Behaviour, Animal Welfare And The Scientific Study Of Affect, David Fraser
Animal Behaviour, Animal Welfare And The Scientific Study Of Affect, David Fraser
Emotion Collection
Many questions about animal welfare involve the affective states of animals (pain, fear, distress) and people look to science to clarify these issues as a basis for practices, policies and standards. However, the science of the mid twentieth century tended to be silent on matters of animal affect for both philosophical and methodological reasons. Philosophically, under the influence of Positivism many scientists considered that the affective states of animals fall outside the scope of science. Certain methodological features of the research also favoured explanations that did not involve affect. The features included the tendency to rely on abstract, quantitative measures …
