Chronic Wasting Disease Prions In Elk Antler Velvet, Rachel C. Angers, Tanya S. Seward, Dana Napier, Michael Green, Edward Hoover, Terry Spraker, Katherine O'Rourke, Aru Balachandran, Glenn C. Telling May 2009

Chronic Wasting Disease Prions In Elk Antler Velvet, Rachel C. Angers, Tanya S. Seward, Dana Napier, Michael Green, Edward Hoover, Terry Spraker, Katherine O'Rourke, Aru Balachandran, Glenn C. Telling

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a contagious, fatal prion disease of deer and elk that continues to emerge in new locations. To explore the means by which prions are transmitted with high efficiency among cervids, we examined prion infectivity in the apical skin layer covering the growing antler (antler velvet) by using CWD-susceptible transgenic mice and protein misfolding cyclic amplification. Our finding of prions in antler velvet of CWD-affected elk suggests that this tissue may play a role in disease transmission among cervids. Humans who consume antler velvet as a nutritional supplement are at risk for exposure to prions. The …

Design, Construction, And Testing Of A New Class Of Mobile Robots, Ivan Siles May 2009

Design, Construction, And Testing Of A New Class Of Mobile Robots, Ivan Siles

All Theses

This thesis introduces a novel mobile robot design concept aimed at exploration of subterranean spaces. The key innovation is the combination of highly maneuverable body elements with wheel/leg elements (Whegs). This combination offers performance not possible with conventional 'monolithic' wheeled or tracked mobile robots, or with current robot snakes. The thesis covers four design iterations of the concept, concentrating on describing the overall design process and results from field tests. Additionally a kinematic analysis of the fourth prototype and implications for future designs is presented.

The Dreamer Deepe: A Two-Act Play In The Lovecraft Horror Mythos, Nicholas Mazzuca

All Theses

One full-length, two-act play comprises this creative thesis, which has been submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Master of Arts in English literature. This manuscript showcases a creative work that fuses two separate genres: literary horror and dramatic theory. I take my vocabulary from a preexisting body of work so that I may generate something vital and new. May the words I write honor those who have gone before me and inspire as I have been inspired.

Social And Economic Evaluation Methods For Fisheries: A Review Of The Literature - Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 21, 2009, Simon Vieira, Jacki Schirmer, Edwina Loxton

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

The Department of Fisheries Western Australia is responsible for managing Western Australia’s fishery resources in a way that is consistent with the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). Implementing these principles in a practical manner for fisheries has involved the development of a new management approach that is termed Ecosystems Based Fisheries Management (EBFM). This process incorporates social and economic factors into the management process along with biological and environmental considerations, at both the Fisheries and regional levels.

To date, minimal work has been done to address social and economic factors in accordance with EBFM. This is primarily due to …

Towards Dynamical Systems Approach To Fuzzy Clustering, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva May 2009

Towards Dynamical Systems Approach To Fuzzy Clustering, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many application areas, there is a need for clustering, and there is a need to take fuzzy uncertainty into account when clustering. Most existing fuzzy clustering techniques are based on the idea that an object belongs to a certain cluster if this object is close to a typical object from this cluster. In some application areas, however, this idea does not work well. One example of such application is clustering in education that is used to convert a detailed number grade into a letter grade.

In such application, it is more appropriate to use clustering techniques which are based …

Do Hypothermic Tissue Tolerances Limit Torpor Expression?, Clark J. Cotton, Henry J. Harlow May 2009

Do Hypothermic Tissue Tolerances Limit Torpor Expression?, Clark J. Cotton, Henry J. Harlow

Biology Faculty Publications

1. Arrest temperatures and Q10 values for extensor digitorum longus (EDL), soleus, trabecula, and jejunum muscle twitch strength, contraction time, and 0.5 relaxation time were calculated for a deep torpor hibernator, white-tailed prairie dog (WTPD) (Cynomys leucurus), a shallow torpor hibernator, black-tailed prairie dog (BTPD) (Cynomys ludovicianus), and a non-hibernator, lab rat (Rattus norvegicus) to test the hypothesis that tissue temperature tolerances limit the depth of expressed torpor.

2. There were no temperature tolerance differences between the tissues of the two species of hibernators. Both hibernating species had arrest temperatures and Q10 …

Clostridium Difficile In Retail Meat Products, Usa, 2007, J. Glenn Songer, Hien T. Trinh, George E. Killgore, Angela D. Thompson, L. Clifford Mcdonald, Brandi M. Limbago May 2009

Clostridium Difficile In Retail Meat Products, Usa, 2007, J. Glenn Songer, Hien T. Trinh, George E. Killgore, Angela D. Thompson, L. Clifford Mcdonald, Brandi M. Limbago

United States Public Health Resources

To determine the presence of Clostridium difficile, we sampled cooked and uncooked meat products sold in Tucson, Arizona. Forty-two percent contained toxigenic C. difficile strains (either ribotype 078/toxinotype V [73%] or 027/ toxinotype III [NAP1 or NAP1-related; 27%]). These findings indicate that food products may play a role in interspecies C. difficile transmission.

Land Virtues, Eduardo Peñalver May 2009

Land Virtues, Eduardo Peñalver

Articles

This Article has two goals. First, I explore some of the descriptive and normative limitations of certain law-and-economics discussions of the ownership and use of land. These market-centered approaches struggle in different ways with features of land that distinguish it from other "commodities." The complexity of land-its intrinsic complexity, but even more importantly the complex ways in which human beings interact with it-undermines the positive claim that owners will focus on a single value, such as market value, in making decisions about their land. Adding to the equation land's "memory," by which I mean the combined impact of the durability …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of The Provider Response To Emergency Pandemic (Prep) Tool, Linda Suzzanne Good Phd May 2009

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of The Provider Response To Emergency Pandemic (Prep) Tool, Linda Suzzanne Good Phd

Dissertations

Background: History and science would suggest that a worldwide influenza pandemic is near and its implications are on the minds of healthcare workers (HCWs). Previous studies revealed that HCW have loss-related fears and concerns associated with working during a disaster, especially one with a biologic component. Most healthcare organizations have well-crafted disaster plans in place; however, these plans often rely on the assumption that HCWs will report to work as usual, which may not be the case. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if HCWs' fears and concerns are a predictor of their willingness to report to …

Effects Of The Polycyclic Musk Hhcb On Individual- And Population-Level Endpoints In Potamopyrgus Antipodarum, Signe Pedersen, Henriette Selck, Daniel Salvito, Valery E. Forbes May 2009

Effects Of The Polycyclic Musk Hhcb On Individual- And Population-Level Endpoints In Potamopyrgus Antipodarum, Signe Pedersen, Henriette Selck, Daniel Salvito, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

Although the polycyclic musk 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta[γ]-2-benzopyran (HHCB) is frequently detected in aquatic sediments, very little is known about its effects on sediment-feeding organisms. Effects of sediment-associated HHCB on growth, feeding rate, survival and reproduction in the gastropod Potamopyrgus antipodarum were measured in the laboratory. Snails were exposed to six nominal HHCB concentrations: 0, 0.1, 1, 10, 30 and 100 μg g−1 dry weight (dw) sediment. Adult survival and growth were not affected by HHCB. However, juvenile growth and survival, reproduction, time to first reproduction and adult feeding rate were more sensitive endpoints and declined with increasing HHCB concentration. Individual-level endpoints for …

Concernlines: A Timeline View Of Co-Occurring Concerns, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding the evolution of a software system requires understanding how information about the release history, non-functional requirements and project milestones relates to functional requirements on the software components. This short paper describes a new tool, called CONCERNLINES, that supports this cognitive process by visualizing co-occurring concerns over time.

A Self-Organizing Neural Network Architecture For Intentional Planning Agents, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan May 2009

A Self-Organizing Neural Network Architecture For Intentional Planning Agents, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a model of neural network embodiment of intentions and planning mechanisms for autonomous agents. The model bridges the dichotomy of symbolic and non-symbolic representation in developing agents. Some novel techniques are introduced that enables the neural network to process and manipulate sequential and hierarchical structures of information. It is suggested that by incorporating intentional agent model which relies on explicit symbolic description with self-organizing neural networks that are good at learning and recognizing patterns, the best from both sides can be exploited. This paper demonstrates that plans can be represented as weighted connections and reasoning processes can …
