Ontogeny And Individual Variation In The Adrenocortical Response Of Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata) Nestlings, Haruka Wada, Katrina G. Salvante, Emily Wagner, Tony D. Williams, Creagh W. Breuner

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Numerous studies indicate interspecies variation in the ontogeny of the adrenocortical response in birds; however, little is known about the extent of interindividual variation in avian young. Toward this end, we examined the ontogeny and interindividual variation in the adrenocortical response in zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) nestlings. We measured baseline and stress-induced total (bound and free) corticosterone, corticosteroid binding globulin capacity, and resulting estimated free corticosterone levels in nestlings of four different ages ( days 5, 10, 16, and 21). In addition, we investigated the potential correlates of interindividual variation (brood size and mass). Nestlings at days 5 and 10 …

Abundance And Density Of Mountain Plover (Charadrius Montanus) And Burrowing Owl (Athene Cunicularia) In Eastern Colorado, Heather C. Tipton, Paul F. Doherty Jr., Victoria J. Dreitz

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Because of continental-scale declines of grassland birds over the past century, conservation agendas are focused on increasing understanding of grassland bird ecology and habitat associations. Shortgrass prairie is a unique grassland ecosystem maintained, in part, by Black-tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). The Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus) and western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) are species of conservation concern known to be associated with prairie dog colonies. We estimated abundance of Mountain Plovers and Burrowing Owls in three habitats within the Colorado shortgrass prairie ecosystem— prairie dog colonies, grassland not occupied by prairie dogs, and …

Bushmeat Poaching Reduces The Seed Dispersal And Population Growth Rate Of A Mammal-Dispersed Tree, Jedidiah F. Brodie, Olga E. Helmy, Warren Y. Brockelman, John L. Maron Jul 2009

Bushmeat Poaching Reduces The Seed Dispersal And Population Growth Rate Of A Mammal-Dispersed Tree, Jedidiah F. Brodie, Olga E. Helmy, Warren Y. Brockelman, John L. Maron

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Myriad tropical vertebrates are threatened by overharvest. Whether this harvest has indirect effects on nonhunted organisms that interact with the game species is a critical question. Many tropical birds and mammals disperse seeds. Their overhunting in forests can cause zoochorous trees to suffer from reduced seed dispersal. Yet how these reductions in seed dispersal influence tree abundance and population dynamics remains unclear. Reproductive parameters in long-lived organisms often have very low elasticities; indeed the demographic importance of seed dispersal is an open question. We asked how variation in hunting pressure across four national parks with seasonal forest in northern Thailand …

Neuropsychological Effects Of The Traumatic Stress Response In Sexually Abused Adolescents Throughout Treatment, Kathryn R. Wilson Jul 2009

Neuropsychological Effects Of The Traumatic Stress Response In Sexually Abused Adolescents Throughout Treatment, Kathryn R. Wilson

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Child maltreatment is a pervasive problem in our society that has long-term detrimental consequences to the development of the affected child such as future brain growth and functioning. The alteration of the biochemical stress response system in the brain that changes an individual’s ability to respond efficiently and efficaciously to future stressors is conceptualized as the traumatic stress response. The purpose of this research was to explore the effects of the traumatic stress response on sexually abused adolescents’ through a two-tiered study of neuropsychological functioning throughout treatment. It was determined that there are measurable differences in neuropsychological processing in sexually …

Modulation Of Lps-Induced Activation Of Hepatic Map Kinases, Oliver Surriga Jul 2009

Modulation Of Lps-Induced Activation Of Hepatic Map Kinases, Oliver Surriga

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a potent inflammagen that has been found to be primarily responsible for many symptoms caused by gram-negative bacterial infections. The LPS-initiated signal transduction pathways involve several terminal kinases, mainly p42/44 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), p38 MAPK and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), ultimately leading to increased expression of genes encoding such inflammatory cytokines as interleukin (IL )-1 . IL-6 and tumor necrosis factors (TNF)-u. In this study, the effects of age on LPS-induced activation of MAPKs in the liver of rats were examined. Results show that the basal level of phosphorylated p42/44 MAPK was increased in postnatal day …

Playgrounds Of Disturbance: Bruce Nauman's Existentialism In A Modernist Gallery Space And The Problems Of Analogue Video Art In The Gallery, Cyrus Manasseh Jul 2009

Playgrounds Of Disturbance: Bruce Nauman's Existentialism In A Modernist Gallery Space And The Problems Of Analogue Video Art In The Gallery, Cyrus Manasseh

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

From the 1960s, the American Conceptual artist Bruce Nauman would challenge Modernist gallery structures through his video art. This paper addresses the effect of Nauman's pioneering video art within White Cube gallery spaces particularly in relation to the High Modernist period (1968-90 app.) by examining its meaning from a particular standpoint. It does this by discussing Nauman's video artworks in relation to aspects of existentialist philosophy and theatre as Nauman's avant-garde works would cross into these territories. Nauman's work I argue, would manifest in such a way that would, in terms of his works being displayed, lead to the re-sculpting …

On The Mediocrity Of Arthur C. Clarke's Science Fiction, Darren Jorgensen Jul 2009

On The Mediocrity Of Arthur C. Clarke's Science Fiction, Darren Jorgensen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Theorists and apologists for science fiction (sf) are persistently defending it from accusations of fantasy and of mediocrity. Take the opening sentence of a recent edited collection on the genre:

For most of the eighty years since science fiction (SF) was identified and named as a distinct genre, it has typically been dismissed as the infantile excrescence of a stultifying mass culture, a literature doubly debased by its fantastic elements and mediocre prose (Bould 1).

Whether sf remains marginalized by high literary culture remains a matter for debate. Yet Bould's claim for the genre's denigration is a typical …

Protecting Freedom Of Expression: The Challenge Of Hate Speech In The European Court Of Human Rights Case Law, Mario Oetheimer Jul 2009

Protecting Freedom Of Expression: The Challenge Of Hate Speech In The European Court Of Human Rights Case Law, Mario Oetheimer

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the European Court of Human Rights' (ECHR) approach to balancing freedom of expression under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) with the need to combat hate speech. The Court systematically excludes certain forms of hate speech from protection, particularly racist and Holocaust denial speech, under Article 17, while affording strong protection to expression that contributes to public debate. The analysis highlights the Court's case-by-case approach, reliance on context, and the distinction between hate speech and incitement to violence.

No Evolutionary Response To Four Generations Of Laboratory Selection On Antipredator Behavior Of Aedes Albopictus: Potential Implications For Biotic Resistance To Invasion, Banugopan Kesavaraju, Steven A. Juliano Jul 2009

No Evolutionary Response To Four Generations Of Laboratory Selection On Antipredator Behavior Of Aedes Albopictus: Potential Implications For Biotic Resistance To Invasion, Banugopan Kesavaraju, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Aedes albopictus (Skuse) is an invasive container-dwelling mosquito and an important disease vector that co-occurs with the native mosquito, Aedes triseriatus (Say), and the predatory midge, Corethrella appandiculata (Grabham). Larval Ae. triseriatus show significantly greater antipredatory responses when compared to larval Ae. albopictus in the presence of predation cues from C. appendiculata. The potential for evolution of antipredatory behavioral responses to C. appendiculata in Ae. albopictus is unknown. We used a controlled laboratory selection experiment to test whether Ae. albopictus could evolve antipredatory behavioral responses to C. appendiculata predation. We subjected replicate Ae. albopictus populations to four generations of predation …

Developmental Emergence Of Power-Law Wake Behavior Depends Upon The Functional Integrity Of The Locus Coeruleus, Andrew J. Gall, Badal Joshi, Janet Best, Virginia R. Florang, Jonathan A. Doorn, Mark S. Blumberg Jul 2009

Developmental Emergence Of Power-Law Wake Behavior Depends Upon The Functional Integrity Of The Locus Coeruleus, Andrew J. Gall, Badal Joshi, Janet Best, Virginia R. Florang, Jonathan A. Doorn, Mark S. Blumberg

Faculty Publications

STUDY OBJECTIVES:

Daily amounts of sleep and wakefulness are accumulated in discrete bouts that exhibit distinct statistical properties. In adult mammals, sleep bout durations follow an exponential distribution whereas wake bout durations follow a power-law distribution. In infant Norway rats, however, wake bouts initially follow an exponential distribution and only transition to a power-law distribution beginning around postnatal day 15 (P15). Here we test the hypothesis that the locus coeruleus (LC), one of several wake-active nuclei in the brainstem, contributes to this developmental transition.

DESIGN:

At P7, rats were injected subcutaneously with saline or DSP-4, a neurotoxin that targets noradrenergic …

Genomic Biomarkers For Molecular Imaging: Predicting The Future., Mathew L. Thakur Jul 2009

Genomic Biomarkers For Molecular Imaging: Predicting The Future., Mathew L. Thakur

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Over the past few decades, great strides have been made in anatomical imaging of disease that has led to their diagnosis with minimal invasion. Despite these advances, diseases such as cancer continue to take one human life every minute in the United States. Complimentary approaches that pertain directly to the genesis of the disease might contribute to its early diagnosis and subsequent management. In cancer, an array of molecular abnormalities leading to the modulations in expression of key proteins important in the cellular signaling pathways and cell proliferation has been identified. These specific disease fingerprints, biomarkers, are overexpressed on malignant …

The Detective And The Witness: An Ethical Friendship In Julian Barnes’ Arthur And George, Soo Kim Jul 2009

The Detective And The Witness: An Ethical Friendship In Julian Barnes’ Arthur And George, Soo Kim

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Despite the remarkable diversity of their material and style, the novels of Julian Barnes are widely considered to be postmodernist works, which employ meta-narrative and intertextuality in order to problematize the notion of truth. Tellingly, Barnes notes in an interview that "I haven't read any literary theory" (Freiburg 52). For Barnes, "to fit novels into some constructed grid," such as "Derridaish prose," "makes the whole thing much less clear than it was in the first place" (Ibid.). Calling postmodernist techniques of intertextuality and palimpsest "grotesque" (60), Barnes discounts postmodernist play with the text and the past. While Barnes …

Pines And The Ecology Of Carnaby‘S Black-Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus Latirostris) In The Gnangara Sustainability Strategy Area, Hugh Finn, William Stock, Leonie Valentine

Research outputs pre 2011

This study examined the behavioural ecology of Carnaby‘s Black-Cockatoo in the Gnangara Sustainability Strategy study area, with a focus on habitat use of pine plantations. The study confirms that the pine is the main food source for Carnaby‘s Black-Cockatoos within the GSS area during the non-breeding season (January-June). The value of the Gnangara-Pinjar-Yanchep pine plantations as a food source for Carnaby‘s Black-Cockatoo should not be underestimated. Large congregations of birds (~3000) utilised the pine plantations for an extended period, mainly January-March but with birds continuing to feeding within the plantations through June. The pine plantations have provided an important and …

A sustainable future rests in our hands

Institutions like St. Norbert College, dedicated to the furthering of research and the education of future generations, take seriously their responsibility to teach by word and example how we might meet the Earth’s need for gentler living.

On the cover: Wherever the Norbertine order has sent them, its members have looked for ways to meet the needs of the community around them. The charism of the order itself, consistent with Catholic social teaching, calls for a careful stewardship of the earth. No surprise, then, that environmental education and sustainability is such a natural …
